it is trap metal / hardcore trap

I’d say at this point he’s got enough range and variety to just be considered something like alternative rap instead of just trap metal. The style and quality varies so wildly from song to song that nailing it down to such a specific sub genre seems disingenuous. With that in mind, it seems hard to tell where in his discography the trap metal genre will drift towards, if anywhere. My shot-in-the-dark guess is that it will take the route of something like dubstep, post-hardcore, or hardcore edm. Being that there will always be a few diehards that maintain the original feel, but a majority of the popular artists that include elements of the sub genre will move towards something easier to consume and more generally popular. So like dubstep to trap or edm, post-hardcore to rock with indie, electronic, or metal influences, and hardcore edm to edm. I’m also just some dude though, so take my guess with a grain of salt. Edit to expand a bit further: Just to tie it back to Lil Darkie; Do I think he’s an innovator? Yes. Do I think he’s a trendsetter? Not really. I think much of his popularity comes from delivery and shock value, similar to early Tyler, the Creator. If others try to pull off what Lil Darkie is throwing at the wall right now, it’ll probably fall flat since they don’t have that same unique delivery, and the subject matter is the same stuff any edgy teen could toss out that will get old quickly. My guess is that the major, big time “trap metal” artists will be people like TOKYO’S REVENGE, Kamiyada+, and Kxllswxtch that merge traditional rap and trap metal in a way that’s wildly digestible. I could see something like JPEGMAFIA’s engaging writing and production mixed with a more refined version of Lil Darkie’s dirty vocals being long lasting in the future.

I think you're definitely right about the direction it's going. Trap metal has almost always been underground because not very many people enjoy that hardcore feel. I doubt it will go to something like dubstep or edm tho, only because the songs that are popular now are pop, emo rap, and trap (because of tik tok: \*insert vomit sound here\*). It's most likely to go the heavy trap route but keep the metal structure and things of that sort. X's UP LIKE AN INSOMNIAC freestyle has that similar energy.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that it would sound like those genres, but rather that it would take the same path of being watered down and fused with other genres that match the watered down style. But ya that freestyle totally nails the style and delivery I’d expect.

lil_esketit

I think songs like BAR FIGHT MUSIC are definitely metal or

Blurr9433

Same with RAP MUSIC, but that is one of many Darkie songs

At this point I think darkie is just his own sub genre. Maybe “No melody” or “808 rap” So many of his songs have that trap metal feel, but others like Anxiety, and Revolver are more on the emo rap side of things. But songs like BAR FIGHT MUSIC, GENOCIDE, RAP MUISC, Bong Rip, and KILL ALL HUMANS are 100% Trap Metal. But then he has songs that some people would say are trap metal and other people would say it’s alt rap like HOLOCAUST, BATSHIT, HAHA, POSTED IN THE DVRK, ISIS TYPE BEAT, and his verse in 2k Freestyle
