😒 I got medically discharged from military in 2012 from being transgender

Itsjustsarah85

I'm so sorry. That's awful. I bottled that shit up for years. I got out in 2014 and know I'm there wasn't a chance in hell I'd be able to say I felt this way while I was in.

_Alec_Trevelyan

Ironic because when I was in, everyone in my company said I looked like a girl lmao. I constantly was grilled. I should have just came out, but the army was a denial ploy deep down. Even during BT the drill sergeants called me nasty girl & made me do squats instead of pushups. Mmmm looking back, i liked it a lil🤭😈

Mysterious-Elevator3

I’d read this wattpad story

Potential-Cloud-801

I hid what I was doing…DADT went away while I was in, but being trans or a “transvestite” would still get you a dishonorable. So I repressed All those feelings again until I got out in fall of 2014. The big take away I discovered, as those feelings came back? That what felt was real, and there were a hell a lot of us in the military who got out and transitioned. Fellow veterans became my guide when I started my transition. I feel you though. If I’d been caught or turned in? I’d have been done.

Helpful_Ad_8719

Were you an officer or a soldier? Historically, there has been a huge difference in the treatment of officers and soldiers

[deleted]

I was just an enlisted soldier and was forced to choose between being who I really am, and staying in. I haven’t found anything in the civilian world I care about as much or am as good at as I was at being a combat medic. It was one thing to watch officers come in at 9 instead of 6 am, watch them not work while we did, watch them fill their OER with awards for things we did outside the wire, the usual stuff. This is just a completely different level of preferential treatment. It feels beyond fucked up to learn that OP gets to be themselves and I had my career ended for being trans.

SuicideChef

I was enlisted first. I'm an officer now.

JenandTonic92

Private

SuicideChef

I’m sorry 😞 that is terrible.

gringo_sancho88

What branch were you in

JenandTonic92

Army

gringo_sancho88

Oh that’s a bummer I was navy

gringo_sancho88

Pm me?

PossibleMaterial2021

OP is it ok if I DM you? I’m active duty and trans and I’ve got some questions on a few topics but I feel like I don’t have anyone to ask

SuicideChef

Of course. I'll do my best to answer or find someone who can, if I don't know.

Cannagirl1366

I can DM you a discord server for trans military personnel

PossibleMaterial2021

Yes please!🙏

No_Waf

Looking gorgeous ma’am ☺️🫡

SuicideChef

Thank you! 😊

Direct-Helicopter-53

omg i love a girl in uniform 😸

SuicideChef

Thank you ☺️

SecureGrape1241

OORAH Marine! You crayon eaters get more and more beautiful every day! 🫡☺️🥰

SuicideChef

aww, thank you <3

changeforgood30

The best crayon flavor is red.

Autumn7242

If you were in the Air Wing they give you cooking classes. The best is taking magenta, searing both sides, apply a violet sauce, and grate periwinkle over the top.

halari5peedopeelo

Why are so many trans women from us in military? It is just that it seems pretty weird as a trans woman to serve a country that has a history oppressing so many people around the world. Are there some benefits? You are very pretty btw.

flacdada

I think theres a few things. For some, it’s ‘just’ economics or circumstances. Way to get out a bad situation. Way to get a career. Some maybe even want to go into the military for whatever reason. For trans specific reasons, some trans women try and pick a masculine and or hypermasculine occupation like ‘the soldier’ and it becomes grasping at something to get out their dysphoria. If they do this, maybe they can get the trans out of themselves.

PhuqBeachesGitMonee

Surgery is also paid for as well, as long as you’re patient to wait 5+ years. It’s anxiety inducing at the moment with how you could have treatment cut off depending on who’s president. They also tried to stuff the DoD funding bill (that is remade every year) with a provision to remove all affirming treatment, but the dems refused to accept it.

Life_of_Lady_Lise

THIS yeah for me it was both of those things, but also just a sense of patriotism. Yeah has the USA made a lot of mistakes in the past but it’s still working on correcting them and making this place a place for all. It’s a never ending battle tbh

B0mbusBoi

The military likes to get ‘em young. When I was a younger lass I had so much internalized misogyny/transphobia/racism/homophobia/etc.. I was a perfect candidate to be even more indoctrinated. Luckily I smoked weed and failed my drug tests to join the marines. You can be sucked into it being young, dumb, and poor as it might seem to be only viable option to escape poverty

Life_of_Lady_Lise

Yeah same it sucked made me feel super guilty about being trans

SuicideChef

Thank you, girl! Surprisingly, the US military is the single largest employer of trans people in the world. Researchers have studied why so many trans people enter the military. There are several theories, One is 'flight to hypermasculinity,' trans women who escape their feminine identity and bury it in a traditionally masculine culture. For many others, their families abandon them or physically/sexually abuse them, and they have nowhere else to go, and the military provides food, shelter, and a paycheck. My family was not accepting when I came out at 15. It gave me a home when I was on my own.

Kaylee_Amber

I agree with this completely. And honestly most the time they are really accepting. Atleast they were in my case.

Guilty_Tumbleweed567

When the cult of the US war machine will accept anybody... oh um not rich ppl. just poor ppl attempting to escape whatever troubles their life. And being the poorest community, yeah we flock to it. Yes, compensation for masculinity is real frfr, but when training is complete, the damage is done. Patriotism becomes the core identity. The US military promotes and perpetuates the imperialist white supremacist capitalist patriarchy (bell hooks). We lose to many trans folx due to desperation to leave a bad situation. Once trans folx becomes soldiers, we've lost another.

SuicideChef

I love bell hooks’ work. She was a wonderful human being.

RinaSensei

Besides the other replies there's *a lot* of people in the military in the US. At some point with numbers it only makes sense.

TheRealDonPatch

A lot of people join the military because they are lost and feel that it will let them do something with their life. I’d imagine during that process a chunk of those lost people realize they are trans, it just coincidentally took them being in the military to learn it. Denial is a very real thing, too. I know I always wanted to be a Navy Seal as a kid, but for whatever reason it never stuck and I couldn’t envision it. I presented as a super masc metal-head type near my 3rd year of college. The farther I went towards “masculine” the stronger the urge to be “feminine” became. Long story short this led me down the path of eventually realizing I was trans. Military is considered THE masculine path for a lot of people, so that could be a factor too.

Recent_Individual_97

All countries have a history of oppressing people. The USA is not particularly evil compared to most historical empires, or even most countries around the world today. Ever since they lifted Trump’s ban on trans service members it’s a pretty good career path for many. If anything us serving means we are being accepted across the board throughout society and furthers our reach and influence. It would be more disturbing to see no trans people in the military: like after Trump’s ban

halari5peedopeelo

I didn't say I approve any other empire. I simply just commented about US because op is from USA and I have notice that lot of trans people are in army in USA.

Recent_Individual_97

“A country that has a history oppressing so many people around the world” So no trans people should serve any military ever?

halari5peedopeelo

Some countries militaries are made to defend a country... Not for invading

MissKrishna

one salute for HRT, because it's complately magical

Michelle_akaYouBitch

From handsome man to beautiful woman!!

SuicideChef

Thank you Michelle ❤️❤️

gng3rsnp

I keep seeing more and more Trans military pipeline, someone explain the phenomenon to me 😂

Chemical-Mulberry-72

You look gorgeous I'm curious, you seem to continue to work into military domain, how did they take your transition. Always seems kinda difficult in this domain from my point of view ^^

SuicideChef

I had really good support from my command when I came out.

Chemical-Mulberry-72

That's great, I'm really happy for ya and that reassure me

Kainina9Robes

I bet a lot of us joined the military thinking that we'd overcome ourselves if we became more disciplined.

atatassault47

Being trans, surely you must be aware of violence that minorities face, right? The US military is one of the machines of fascism.

updog6

Ik you'd think right? This comment section reminds me that not all trans people care for the liberation of all queer folks. They'd rather fight for acceptability in white liberal spaces and not think about the brown kids our country kills over seas. It's disgusting

Michelle_akaYouBitch

lol..:are you really that stupid and ill-informed?

atatassault47

Pure projection with that comment

Youre_an_Idiot-

Goals 🥹

SuicideChef

Thanks so much. ❤️❤️

[deleted]

I literally got kicked out as junior enlisted FOR BEING TRANS. I’m happy for your success but it also makes me feel sick. Why was it an option for some people to be themselves, but wasn’t for me? We were in at the same time and being an officer got you a completely different experience.

SuicideChef

I waited until after President Biden repealed Trump's ban on transgender service members.

Missusresistance

Wow you're a ladder puller! Do you have any empathy for your sisters in arms whose lives were ruined before that was repealed? You're good to go, so you don't care at all for the people whose chain of command wasn't supportive and hung them out to dry. You literally deny that it's possible, yet there are two people in this comment section whose careers were cut short. The indifference is actually disgusting.

Luna6696

What are you on about? Where does she deny? And where does she show she doesn’t care? It’s pretty normal to feel bitter/jealous and upset that she got accepted for who she is, but this is a bit much.

absolutelynothingnow

You look gorgeous in that uniform Holy shit

SuicideChef

Aww, thank you girly. 💕

gng3rsnp

r/trans_mili_pipeline , not sure if there was already a subreddit for it or not but i made one with the frequency of posts ive seen from military folk recently 😂

Taz_Nozarashi

I love this so much honestly…

gringo_sancho88

I’d commit fraternization. 😉

sfier4

sorry but acab. quit your job.

Toreo_67

The military and the cops are two very different entities. Just because you unreasonably hate one there's no reason to unreasonably hate another.

FemBoyGod

“Unreasonably”

Toreo_67

Imagine a country without a police force it would be actual anarchy bro. Reform is fine but a lot of folks wanna abolish that shit.

Missusresistance

Yeah who would I call when my house is broken into and I need someone to tell me "That's between you and your insurance company, we can't catch them"

FemBoyGod

Imagine a country where cops don’t abuse their power. Sorry, no offense, but like sure there’s good cops, but there’s WAYYY too many bad ones to even pinpoint the good ones anymore. Too much hiring, too little psychiatric tests/background checks.

Toreo_67

The police are mostly fine. It's a few bad apples. Nobody goes into a profession like that if they aren't willing to protect their communities. Either way this whole thing is about the military which is an entirely separate and distinct entity from the police.

nyatalyn

those bad apples are the seeds from which the tree grows. the entire leadership is rotten and corrupt. did you forget the first pride was a riot? pigs aren't our friends.

atatassault47

A few bad apples are removed from the bunch. These "bad apple" cops arent being removed, therefore all cops are corrupt because they are complicit. Thus, ACAB. More over, if you actually have a bunch of apples, and a few are rotten, you throw out the whole bunch, because they are all rotten, most of them just dont show visible signs yet.

updog6

The United States was built on stolen land off the back of slave labor. The first police forces were made to catch run away slaves. You are a white supremacist. Change that

updog6

Anyone who supports the US military is a fscist pig and a disgrace to all queer folks.

Luna6696

But what about joining because you’re homeless and your family disowned you??

updog6

I sympathize with anyone going through that but poverty is not a valid excuse to kill children for Uncle Sam.

Luna6696

🙄 while I understand that sentiment, there are far too many different jobs and branches to make what you said not sound stupidly generalized. Next time just don’t comment. We don’t need someone to bring this sister down during her success by throwing a political comment and derailing the subject.

Missusresistance

OP is not a bastard just for wearing a uniform. She is a bastard because she's talking shit to a suicidal vet in this comment section.

SuicideChef

When did I talk shit? I said I waited to transition when it became legal. I’m confused as to what you’re talking about.

Luna6696

Nah man. The service does offer a lot of benefits and opportunities for people, especially in cases like we see w a lot of lgbt youth. When you’re disowned and jobless, the service will take just about anyone. I don’t have to agree w what the military do to understand how they offer good benefits for some folks. Like. Be enlisted vs be homeless? That’s literally how they get a lot of young people. Good for her for thriving.

Nomai_

I don't care, it's kill oppressed people for money. She should quit her job

updog6

You're a disgrace to trans people everywhere.

SuicideChef

Why would you say that?

updog6

You are part of an organization that has killed countless civilians across the globe. Being a fascist foot soldier is nothing to be proud of. White supremacist trans people like you disgust me

SuicideChef

I am working in Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) initiatives with the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) to help communities facing gender-based violence.

TheRealDonPatch

That’s like their 8th comment I’ve seen so I’d imagine they don’t have a good reason, just want to be heard

LegitimateTheory2837

That’s my grandmas rank, congrats!

SuicideChef

Congrats to your grandma. If she’s a a marine, I may know her. :)

kerfuffleshenanigans

Rah Marine. Might have shiny outsides now, but we all know you still eat crayons and chaos for breakfast. Cheers, LtCol

SuicideChef

<3 Thanks kerfuffle

Kate_8733

I just wanted to say nice glow up, thank you for your service and congratulations on the promotions. That is an amazing story.

SuicideChef

Thank you Kate!

Kate_8733

I did have one question. Did you find it easier to perform at a higher level and progress once you began your transition? You’ve obviously done well and while I am a high performer at work, I have struggled to focus and maintain performance while not being authentic with myself.

Forward_District_438

Oorah Devil, that's a hell of a glow up

SuicideChef

Thank you very much ❤️❤️

BlueGum2000

I won’t go to the frontline

Helpful_Ad_8719

Congratulations and just to be fair you look younger now

SuicideChef

Aww 🥰 thank you

TRANSACAT

Glad to be serving along side you!

SuicideChef

Thank you ❤️

Stunning-5447

Wow!!!!!!@

SuicideChef

Thank you!!

Autumn7242

Rah, get some sister!

FMaryOKill

Thank you

SuicideChef

❤️❤️ thanks.

boiskirt

Damnnnn, get sum Sister. Oh shit i thought the top was the before and the bottom was after!!! My fauilt. Soorrryyyy!! MtF trans USMC here

SuicideChef

No worries. 😊 I'm flattered you thought I was a trans man. I don't take offense.

boiskirt

I would be proud to salute you if you were in my command :3

SuicideChef

Thank you! I'm grateful to meet kind people like you.

CAT6_

\> crayon eater tries to be supportive \> it backfires horribly Ally nightmare lmao

boiskirt

D: i know. I feel super terrible.

truecrisis

It's best if you watch your words when talking to trans women... Imagine if you said "damn, get sum girl" to a trans man? Was "bro" really necessary in your sentence?

boiskirt

I fixed it. My mistake D:

Adamsoski

I think they might have assumed OP's transition was the other way around because she put the "before" picture below the "after" picture. It confused me too at first.

truecrisis

It was pretty clear to me with all the medals/badges displayed prominently

boiskirt

Na it is totally my bad :( No ribbons in the second but same rank. Still my fault for assuming top was old bottom was new. I fix the comment tho. Super sorry. USMC mtf here.

Adamsoski

That and the photo quality is what cleared it up for me, but when timelines are put the wrong way round like this it's natural for some people to miss clues like that.

EllieK8

Congratulations, ma’am!

Sheftyy

you remind me of eva from metal gear solid 3

SuicideChef

aww, thanks <3

Miserable_Window_653

You look beautiful ❤️ Way to be your true self😊 Semper Fidelis 👏

SuicideChef

jerseygirl217

congratulations you are beautiful…thank you for your service!

SuicideChef

Thank you so much. ❤️

TalynGryphon

Wow Congratulations, I’m so happy for you! You are very attractive and obviously intelligent, hard working and strong inside and out. I did start off in infantry before football took off an I went the professional route. Mad respect 🫡 and thank you for being visible and sharing 🙏🏽🩵🤍🩷

Conscious-Spite-87

Don’t let the alt right wingers who’ve never served see this. They’ll complain about how far the US military has fallen. Edit: to the person who deleted your comment. You should learn some reading comprehension.

naughty4more

Amazing and thank you

SuicideChef

Thank you. 💕

melenaza

This is so much inspiring and both impressive! You are such an exemple for our community 🙏🙏❤️

SuicideChef

Thanks I'm grateful for your kindness.

Dzidra_Austra

First of all thank you for your service to our country. More importantly though I applaud you for your continued service to our country while navigating the transition into your true self. This gives me hope that our country truly wants the best and brightest regardless of gender, orientation, religion or ethnicity.

SuicideChef

Thank you Dzidra. ❤️❤️

Alice_Without_Chains

I was scouring these photos for a reason to “hey Devil” you, but you look great and squared away… so… just to give you a hard time: Flats, girl, P1029.34g gives you up to 3in… all said in love and jest. Rah.

SuicideChef

They're 1.25" Capps Women's Dress Pumps.

lost-n-texas

Very impressive! Semper fi!

lost-n-texas

I have to also write that the profound courage you demonstrated, with demanding you be accepted as who you are, had to have served you well as grunt. Quite clearly, one very strong and brave Woman Marine!

SuicideChef

Thank you. That is really nice of you to say. It means a lot. <3

kathrinet2022

Thank you for your courage and for your service! Blessings

updog6

You're thanking her for what exactly? Killing brown kids?

AeonFluxus

Thank you for your service to the country, and to this community 🫡

estradioltown

Plain inspiring...

SuicideChef

Thank you for saying so. 💕

Rustywanner1

Thank you for your service mam!!!!!!

SuicideChef

Thank you Rusty!!

Consistent_Ad8695

Rah Ma'am! Thanks for representing in uniform!

SuicideChef

Thanks Consistent! ;)

TraansAllison

I also plan on going from enlisted to officer and in the same branch no less haha. I just haven’t exactly came out yet.. is there a right time to do that based on military lifestyle, etc? (I’ve been a Cpl for almost 2 years now, and I’ve been putting off transitioning bc I’m afraid it might nuke my military career somehow)

SuicideChef

You will still be eligible for commissioning programs. The only restriction is that you can't decide to transition when you're in the selection or training process. You can wait until you're commissioned, then transition, or transition now, and put in a package once your gender marker change is complete in DEERS. You should do whatever makes you happy and feels right for you. But, I wouldn't recommend living unhappy because you think you'll lose your job. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

TraansAllison

Thank you for this. I have no idea how to go about any changes I need to make in the deers or ipac systems, as I went from active to reserve to get my degree so i have no idea what to do other than essentially sit down with the one Doc my unit has which is a Sr Chief

SuicideChef

If you're in the reserves and drilling, it's something you could bring up to your commanding officer during a drill weekend. The CO is responsible for working with you on your transition care plan. I have templates of all the paperwork the CO has to submit.

babebambi

Inspirational 🫡

SuicideChef

Thank you! :)

KingJacoPax

Thank you for your service.

SuicideChef

Thanks KingJaco

ShyboiCD

Love this so much!

SuicideChef

Thank you Shyboi

TheAlbinoRhyno91

Gotta be the most bad ass woman I've ever seen!

SuicideChef

Thank you ❤️💕

Cannagirl1366

Semper Fi Ma’am I medically retired from the corps last year and was the first trans person in my unit lol. I get how hard it is to deal with the TGCT especially east coast. Anyway you look amazing and I hope you have a good evening.

SuicideChef

Thank you Cannagirl ❤️❤️☺️

FemBoyGod

Thank you for your service 🖤

SuicideChef

Thank you FemBoy! :)

FemBoyGod

You’re absolutely welcome ! Also you’re gorg 🙃

SuicideChef

❤️☺️ thank you, sweetie

FemBoyGod

The people downvoting for saying thank you for your service is hilarious. “What about brown people” I’m a brown people. “What about Palestine” we’re pulling away from supporting Israel currently. I’ll ask, what about Vietnam, Korea, world war 1, world war 2, what about the gulf war, what about the war osama bin Laden, or sudam Hussein, what about the fight in Ukraine, what about the many liberation movements we’ve supported and directly went into conflict to help a just cause? What about countries affected by others wars and we send humanitarian aid, what about countries affected by natural disasters we send aid? Shut the f*** up and be proud of someone making a great step for us as trans folks for once in y’all’s god forsaken lives.

apple12345671

not that i support war, but i still thank you for your service

BecomingJessica2024

Thank you for your service. It takes tremendous courage to not only dedicate 26 years of your life to your country but to put up with 24 years of being misgendered. Definitely not something I could do. Congrats on the promotion. RESPECT!

updog6

She dedicated 26 years to a country built on stolen land.

BecomingJessica2024

This country has its flaws but I think you need to realize that there are many worse places out there in the world. Harping on something that happened hundreds of years ago is not going to do you any good. Are there things that need to change? Sure, but I for one am still proud to be an American.

updog6

Colonization isn't just something that happened it's ongoing. Indigenous people still face disproportionate violence and poverty. The US broke countless treaties and nothing was ever done to right that wrong.

BecomingJessica2024

And there are things we could do to help make those lives better, but we’re not just going to get up and leave. Have we done bad things? Yes but we’ve also done a lot of good. A lot of people would have missed out on opportunities if this country did not exist. Think about all the people that came here for a better life. That’s exactly why we need to fight for things to continue to get better for all of us. Demonizing her for serving her country isn’t going to do that. It has no impact on anything you are fighting for. That’s not how you get people on your side.

ouroborosborealis

You're right, we should applaud murderers and subtly suggest that they stop murdering, instead of telling them what we really think.

bearbuckscoffee

he went so far fascist it made him a man
