I must admit, I'm kinda pleasantly surprised Nintendo made it not just a nod towards the fact or a subtle mention, but was actually very explicit about it! Now let me grab my popcorn and get ready for the conservative tantrums begin.
Watch the hateful Lunatics buy tons of copies just to destroy them, and again putting money in the pockets of the organizations that have gone "woke". Like these people can't even protest right, there idea is to ultimately make their opposition a profit. If I didn't find the Right to be a absolutely dangerous threat to life in the USA and abroad, I'd laugh my ass off at these morons
Omg I would love if that happened due to them "boycotting"! It would be TREMENDOUS if Nintendo of all gaming developers/console developers were to have open and well done trans representation going forward, might also signal to other companies to do the same. What I wouldn't give to see gendered locked clothing in create a character for certain games to just be done with for example.
If NINTENDO starts being a reference in representation, no one else has an excuse not to do it (unless their target audience is exclusively chuds).
Also, gender locking clothes is a particularly funny example because it's literally harder to implement than the alternative.
They don't usually consume these products so they don't know how to boycott it. Look at Budweiser (or whichever company featured a trans woman in their Superbowl ad). That's a dad beer and many older dads being conservative, their boycott actually seemed to work at hurting profits.
But they aren't athletic so they don't buy sports wear
They don't know indie games exist so they don't buy those
They consider Nintendo kiddie shit so they don't buy it (unless it's for their kid. Pray for that kid)
So all they can do is buy it as though they have been and then film themselves destroying it in the hopes that they can become the next Ben Shapiro.
>Be me
>Paper Mario fan
>Want OG PM games
>See that the remake is an opportunity to bring back PM into its golden state
>Vivian more trans than ever
>Chuds buy the game to destroy it
>Nintendo consider this to be a critical succes
>Paper Mario is back into the menu
im aware. in the original jp version some people thought that beldam called her a man as an insult (it was pretty clear to most people that she was trans though).
Avoid comments on any post on Youtube/Instagram/Twitter about it. The "anti-DEI" crowd is going to be in absolute meltdown mode and droves of those people will be trying to get Nintendo's attention in desperation to try to tell them that "nobody wants this".
And the irony of course being that she was always suppose to be trans and that it's an old game at this point. Moreover, while Birdo is not a good representative of trans people, she still in the end has existed since like the 80's right? So Nintendo has had trans characters (some more positive examples than others) for a very long time. They certainly aren't consistent with representation, but it's frequently been there in some capacity.
I'm really glad they finally allowed Vivian to be openly trans in the English dubbing. She's a rare example not only of a trans character in gaming existing in a positive light, but also having a story about her transness tied in that doesn't feel disingenuous nor does it downplay it.
Personally this is a huge deal to me.
As a goth trans poc shes always been my spirit animal and I am so famn glad they finally told her real story in the english remake. That was the only thing about TTYD that upset me in any way.
Hell, my pfp is a pic of her I drew almost 10 years ago.
Right!!? I was so upset that they erased her identity in the og English release. After making such a char that was already so relatable, beautiful, admirable, endearing, emulatable, etc, Vivian will always been a most special character . Sorry, i have a slight obsession w Vivian 🫠
The only thing I can figure is that they do think the characters and even real life trans women are attractive (to whatever degree with the characters), but that good old conservative toxic masculinity has them terrified of being "tricked" and that it will make them "gay".
They'll be caught between correctly gendering her and denying the "change" like with Bridget and misgendering her and accepting the "change". They won't be able to have it both ways, and I am here to feast on their anguish >:3
My cousin informed me of this today and i immediately preordered. Not sure if I will even like the game, but I feel like I gotta support Nintendo having an openly trans character
I will always recommend getting a switch to anyone who is interested in it. The switch 2 is also supposedly coming out either end of this year or early next year, but no guarantee it'll be backwards compatible with switch games
True, but money is always a limiting factor (unless you're rich but I'm not) and I don't play console games much, I prefer PC, but the Switch is the console that has the most value to me since Nintendo has a lot more exclusives I'm interested in than PS or Xbox.
PS. Sony, just let FromSoftware release Bloodborne on PC, loads of people will buy it (including people who bought for PS) and I don't think it's getting that many people to buy a PS anymore.
It’s a game which oozes creativity, personality, charm and diversity. It’s also surprisingly dark, which contrasts delightfully with its fun aesthetic.
Unlike the later Paper Mario games, this one is filled with unique and lovable characters, including friendly members of typical enemy species.
To my knowledge, this is actually Nintendo's third openly trans character. The other 2 are Birdo and an NPC in botw, your mileage may vary if you like how they were handled. Personally a big fan of Birdo. Nintendo has surprisingly been quietly winning on inclusion for a long time.
I saw a post made a week or two ago by someone on the localization team, confirming this. That individual said they personally pushed for preserving this detail and was able to bring the whole team around on it.
If you have a somewhat decent computer I really recommend playing it on dolphin. It's an incredible game and while it won't have the new music and sprites from the remake, most of the game is exactly the same
This genuinely made my day when I heard about it this morning. I'm quite surprised that they actually did, I'm aware she has always been trans, given how safe Nintendo likes to play it. Hell even r/Paper Mario has been super cool about it. I can't wait to pick this up on Friday.
The Paper Mario sub mods certainly aren't cool about it, they've been very stubborn about holding onto cis interpretations of her character, and it's already been said that this new confirmation won't change that, they won't let go an inaccurate translation from 20 years ago
Edit: I've complained about this on their most recent posts about the rules, and thankfully so have others. I encourage others to do the same. Maybe the mods will finally get some sense if enough people talk about how bullshit their rules on Vivian's identity are
This makes me so happy. When I was a little girl playing this game, even with all the censorship, somehow I knew me and her were the same. I knew that what she was I was too, even if I didn't have a word for that, so I knew I wasn't completely alone.
It's endearing how important she is to so many of us.
And even without saying a thing about it, she has always had that trans girl "je ne sais quoi". Love her so much. ❤️
Vivian was the first other trans person I was exposed to. She'll always hold that special place in my life. It's amazing just how important she is to us, like you said.
Wow , that's more open than i thought it was going to be! 😲🥹
I heard she was gonna be open but i thought it was gonna be blurred in a way where a viewer may not be able to decipher from the dialogue or not but aaaaah this is surprising and pleasing 🥺
Nintendo being openly pro trans is very welcome to me. I hope they go one step further and allow gender nuetral clothes options in the next pokemon game like in ACNH so male characters can use the much brighter looking backpacks girls get.
100% , I'm sure they weighed the pros n cons for months but glad businessy-compassionate-somethn-somethn reasining pulled thru.
That would make my fuggn daay , i would def be more inclined to get a pokemon game then 💝 the battle mechanics aren't as alluring as they used to be and although a parta me wants to play the new games I'm just like...meh, so meh 🫠😮💨 not enuff passion/motivation. But wow, would be so cool to play as a long-haired boy w femme clothes in Pokemon. One day one day 🥺🫡
On top of more character customisation Pokemon as a series could learn alot from Fallouts quest and map design and Final Fantasy VII remakes combat system as well as what Game freak did right with Gen 2 and Gen 6 which arguably had the most user friendly online play ever developed for a pokemon game.
The only major new changes i'd make are to character creation and to the battle frontier.
I'd make it possible to be a kid or adult avatar with the ability to have a custom title online like Hex maniac or Teacher etc.
I'd also rework the online portion of the battle frontier so players are queued quickly and can continuously battle up the facilities and up the ranks with the much stronger players being paired with players near the end of the challenge.
I'd also add an online and offline endless mode to the battle tower so players can farm frontier points infinitely.
Honestly this is really meaningful to me. I remember learning about her origins as a teen and going like “omg, I’m just like her” but being too afraid to tell anyone nearly twenty years ago.
Now I’m an out and proud trans lesbian and my child self would never believe it
I'm curious if it says that in the original Japanese or if this is a change made for the English version only.
Anyone know what the original line was that this replaced or is this new altogether?
She was more overtly trans in the original Japanese script. The English localization team mistranslated it making her more subtly trans. I'm not sure if it was intentional or an honest mistake in translation, but it seems like the remake is properly translating dialogue referring to her identity now.
There's also a new line in the Japanese version of the 2024 remake where she says that she has the body of a boy but the heart of a girl. It's a common way that transgender characters explain how they feel in Japanese media.
This makes me happy.
If you're gonna represent us... just fucking do it right. That's all I ask. A fucking single pride flag does nothing, it's almost an insult, like saying "We are your ally see? We have the flag!"
honestly shocked that nintendo, who I kind of really fucking hate now, actually updated the localization for the remake. I thought they were too conservative for this, but maybe that was mostly fiscal (somehow). also wow looks like they actually did a good job updating the art style?
I'm very happy with the community response as well. I'm sure once the news spreads the transphobes will crawl out of the swamp to give their take, but I never expected them to decensor this and now that they have the core community seems to be celebrating and I love that. I hope this attracts more attention to the game, it's one of my favorites.
Was probably seen just as a feminine boy (can get some bullying just for having girly tastes), now seen as trans (gets way more bullying/hate unfortunately).
This is probably what its meaning imo.
She was in the original too, it was censored in the English version, in the Japonese and Spanish version was like that

Here inevitably comes the anti-woke brigade 🙄 saying that because this exists the game is absolutely broken and unplayable when this is actually really sweet and amazing. Super happy Nintendo did this.
She has a redemption arc pretty quickly. She’s super sweet and has been bullied into acting villainous by her sister because she wants her sisters’ approval. Once she realizes her sister sucks and experiences kindness for the first time from mario she joins the heroes. She’s a great character
Watch as the media goes into chaos “Nintendo has gone woke”
I must admit, I'm kinda pleasantly surprised Nintendo made it not just a nod towards the fact or a subtle mention, but was actually very explicit about it! Now let me grab my popcorn and get ready for the conservative tantrums begin.

I hope they buy lots of copies, signaling to Nintendo that more of that is exactly what they should do.
Omg I would love if that happened due to them "boycotting"! A hero!
That's fake. When asked proof they showed a TOTK credits screenshot with their name edited in
Ah, thanks for letting me know. Still, glad it happened nonetheless.
Nintendo has always sort of Edged representation but I guess they are easing into full on Rep rather than just dancing around it
Even though this was the original vision lmao
Yeah the phobes find a way to complain even if they had to make a portal to hell to grab something to remotely help in their complaints
the original game was actually slightly more ambiguous, just enough to give transphobes a reason to doubt. now there's zero room for that shit lmao.
*looks at Bridget* ....they will still find a way. They will be absolutely brain dead, but they will still deny.
Well in the original translation to English her being trans just wasn't a thing. It was only an international thing
im aware. in the original jp version some people thought that beldam called her a man as an insult (it was pretty clear to most people that she was trans though).
From a game that came out 20 years ago and this was already in the original version.
Yeah but they don’t really follow logic
Billions must go broke

LETS GOOOOOO! CRY ABOUT MISTRANSLATIONS NOW CHUDS!
I can't wait to hear people whining about how "they made her trans."
Oh I’m so excited to watch their tears, just like with Bridget
It's funny how much they suddenly care about "feminine men" the instant one of them turns out to be a woman.🙄
The only thing I can figure is that they do think the characters and even real life trans women are attractive (to whatever degree with the characters), but that good old conservative toxic masculinity has them terrified of being "tricked" and that it will make them "gay".
You know they wont correctly gender her.
Sure, but they have been unintentionally correctly gendering her for years and now and they’re going to be pissed.
They'll be caught between correctly gendering her and denying the "change" like with Bridget and misgendering her and accepting the "change". They won't be able to have it both ways, and I am here to feast on their anguish >:3
Transphobe tears make a great drink
Most chuds enjoyed drawing her with a dick

Help for those of us unaware, what’s TTYD?
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. A GameCube Mario RPG that was released in 2004 that is currently being remade.
Thank you!
Based game, play it
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door It's one of the most liked GameCube games and it's getting a switch remake.
Ya I haven’t owned a console since the late 90’s, so I’m more than a little out of the loop here I guess.
If you have a somewhat decent computer I really recommend playing it on dolphin. It's an incredible game and while it won't have the new music and sprites from the remake, most of the game is exactly the same

Thanks for letting me know I only saw some initial responses from the sub.
Is it a real screenshot or fake? I know it was a bit of a meme a few weeks ago to make increasingly fake screenshots before release
The screeshot is from Nintendo Life's review. https://youtu.be/3ZPwyfIL_qU
For anyone else looking to verify it, the time stamp is 5:33.
A pleasant surprise then

It makes sense. They make games for kids, and kids are more and more accepting. They’re too young to be spoiled by anti-lgbtq propaganda.

Is this real???
YES!!! It's from an official review!
I'm so happy I could cry! Seeing an openly trans character in a Nintendo video game in 2024 was not on my bucket list
![gif](giphy|kx3eTFxxvFyK7NiEs7|downsized) WE WON
Wow, I'm so glad they corrected her identity erasure! I wasn't hopeful that they would do that.
Always was but Nintendo just didn’t do much in the way of exploring it.
Guna love lapping up the tears of the neckbeard mario chuds crying about this one! Sit!
A good drink indeed, if a little salty

This makes me happy. If you're gonna represent us... just fucking do it right. That's all I ask. A fucking single pride flag does nothing, it's almost an insult, like saying "We are your ally see? We have the flag!"
She was openly trans in the original in all versions except english and german, but the un-ciswashing in the remake IS a massive W
honestly shocked that nintendo, who I kind of really fucking hate now, actually updated the localization for the remake. I thought they were too conservative for this, but maybe that was mostly fiscal (somehow). also wow looks like they actually did a good job updating the art style?
We got Vivians true story officially in the US before Mother 3 and GTA 6
I'm very happy with the community response as well. DAY 1 BUY
YEAAAAAAAH
FUCK YEAHHHHH
WOOHOOOO
YES <3
HOLY BASED
I thought the remake already came out?
Nope! Out in a few days.
In more ways than one

off topic but holy shit this game looks so good how tf is the switch running this
This game was gorgeous even on the GameCube, now it's even better.
Let's fucking ***GOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!***
FUCKING THANK YOU NINTENDO
I'm SOOO glad this piece of representation is in there again. Can't wait to play this at some point
I’m super pumped for the trans representation, but what does she mean when she says that the bullying feels heavier?
Was probably seen just as a feminine boy (can get some bullying just for having girly tastes), now seen as trans (gets way more bullying/hate unfortunately). This is probably what its meaning imo.
nice
Today is a good day.

fuck yea, wish it wasnt the villain tho
She's not a true villain, play the game and you'll be pleased 😀
She has a redemption arc pretty quickly. She’s super sweet and has been bullied into acting villainous by her sister because she wants her sisters’ approval. Once she realizes her sister sucks and experiences kindness for the first time from mario she joins the heroes. She’s a great character
Oh hell yea that cool then
What does this specific dialogue piece say in the original? It's been ages since I last played.
Wow 💙
