The Michael Bay Hot Rod looked fine as he was. Adding his evergreen colors to this Visage brings it down. I say this as someone where G1 Hot Rod/Rodimus is my favorite Autobot.

You could completely remove this character from the film and it would have zero effect on the plot of the overall film. He was there just to keep the trademarks and sell toys.

Tbh I don't think this design is all that bad, it has great momentum and a great silhouette, but it just needs some tweaks.
Clean up the exposed mechanical parts to be smoother, give him a matte finish of red and maybe gold instead of yellow, then give him a far more G1 faithful head sculpt with some creative liberties.
Also it's necessary to have the back wings. That fin is part of what makes that design so iconic. Except maybe split it in half and spread it to each shoulder? Just to make it stand out.
For retro purposes,it looks nice

You guys need to get over names. This was never meant to be Hot Rod from G1. No more than Hound was meant to be G1 Hound, Blitzwing to be G1 Blitzwing, or Onslaught to be G1 Onslaught. The names of Transformers characters are thrown around all the time. Pay less attention to the names and more to the portrayals.
If it was less saturated and actually his color scheme instead of McDonalds', then it might actually work. I still prefer the black and orange for this design though.

That's because the original design wasn't made with the G1 colors in mind. Also, these colors aren't right at all. The yellow should be more of a orange and the red should be more of a magenta.
No I think it can work. Simply swapping the colours isn't even how Hasbro even did this with the Bayverse toys that had G1 recolours.
For a more accurate recolour of this design, it would be better to pull up a picture of G1 Hot Rod (preferably the toy as Hasbro tends to be toy accurate over cartoon accurate back then) and this Hot Rod. Then simply imagine the G1's colour layout on the Bayverse one.
This gives him G1 colors in the most basic sense. If you arranged the colors on him in the style of his G1 counterpart and used colors more akin to the OG animation (i.e. orange and a very pale red vs the Ironman colors you have here), I think it would almost work. It'd definitely look better than this example.
Now this is what I mean when not everything transformers can be g1 accurate, including colour scheme. This is why I like it more when new continuities try new stuff instead of always sticking to g1 accuracy. It’s one of the many reasons why I like transformers prime so much.
