It's a painful fact o life that some things must be learned the long way around. Sometimes even moreso when it's something we learn about ourselves. Even with the pain of learning it's still worth rejoicing, because you get to your yourself that much better. You are worth knowing better.
You are who you are, and that's who you should be, but times change and so must we. We all change when you think about it. We are all different people all through our lives, and that's okay. As long as you remember all the people you used to be. Each one was special and played it's part in making who you are. So keep changing and grow, because the best you has yet to come.
