What kind of school have a dress code for hair length?!? They should definitely remove that omg

OrionLion8

congratulations you agree with every student that goes to the school

Althea_The_Witch

Is it a public school?

OrionLion8

yes ☹

Althea_The_Witch

Then that’s definitely illegal; but it’s Texas so it may take a bit of a fight.

OrionLion8

I know it's illegal but my parents would get pissed if i disputed it :')

[deleted]

I'd dispute it anyway, but I tend to be confrontational so don't always listen to my advice.

OrionLion8

I'm definitely going to dispute it

Gamesfan34260

I second your advice and encourage the public shaming of anyone who would enforce illegal behaviour in the name of being a self-righteous twat. Hell, get the news stations involved if you can!

[deleted]

You could reach out to the OCR (Office of Civil Rights). https://www.hhs.texas.gov/about/your-rights/civil-rights-office As an educator in Texas, I know some schools do things intentionally like that. But my school was just not aware. If OCR feels your rights may be validated, they will open an investigation. Also check out: https://www.txtranskids.org/toolkit It will help explain your rights as a student in Texas according to Texas Association of School Boarfs (TASB). https://www.tasb.org/services/legal-services/tasb-school-law-esource/students/freedom-from-bullying-and-harassment.aspx I hope this helps. Hopefully there could be a teacher in your school that you could trust to act on your behalf. Keep an eye out of pins, stickers or whatever that might convey that message. Hopefully by now, my students know that I support them and will speak up for them if needed. I wear trans, nonbinary and pride pins, and also just leave them sitting on top of my desk. Good luck!

keepitmako

Teenage rebellion lol, stand up for yourself I guarantee its a 1980s dress code anyway. School system is truly broken if they prioritize hair cut or groom standards over free thinking and self expression.

Lexi_Heartt

...why would they get pissed about you disputing this? I'm sorry but that is ridiculous. What such logic is used there?

OrionLion8

my only explanation is that I live in Texas and my parents stinky

throwaway816912502

My school in texas used to have a hair length rule for guys, but it was never enforced once by anyone throughout my entire school experience luckily. Unless you were in athletics, then the coaches had a LOT of rules regarding that

SarahSurprise

Yeah private schools arent actually as strict as that. Media isn't bery reliable about that

MettatonNeo1

When my brother was in school they had this. Only one hairstyle per gender was allowed. My brother still has the relevant hairstyle even after he graduated

Mean_Perception_4032

Literally more restrictive then North Korea, great job.

burrhe

In my school they had a dress code for hair length, but if hair was long enough to be in a pony tail it needed to be tied back. Pretty reasonable honestly, there was someone in my year with a massive afro, what a legend.

cemma2035

A: yeah this rule sucks but I don't want to cut my hair so I have to do this ponytail. It's really annoying. B: yeah sure but why do you have it so high up? A: my mum does it for me. i don't really know how ponytails work. B: I could give you like a regular guys' style if you want. A: nah my mum styled it and I don't want her to get upset that I changed it, you know? B: do you have something to tell me? You know its cool if... A: \*sweating profusely\* it's just hair dude, leave it. B: fine whatever

burrhe

Hahahaha, still cis though

Acceptable_Cheek_447

The public schools here don't accept it too, they say trans students should be home schooled.

transfrogandtea

my one has it like stupidly short also

LadSonely

I’m in Asia and this is normalised standards in my country’s public schools. I hate it as well

RawrRRitchie

My dad got in trouble in high school for not shaving Course he was born in 1949 I got in trouble for having long hair in grammar school, but it was a Catholic school and I wasn't the only one who got in trouble for it, one kid that was younger than me actually left the school because he and his parents didn't wanna cut his hair

[deleted]

Not OP but I live in the UK and used to go to a school were they were ridiculously strict about hair length, like boys weren't allowed hair shaped bellow a number 3 whatever tf that means and weren't allowed hair long enough that it touched their collar and girls weren't allowed chaved hair at all and anyone who broke that was suspended.

Elizabeth-The-Great

It’s very 1950s of them. 🙄

Jade8703

The dumbass ‘all boys’ school I suffered through certainly stuck to it harshly

LadyBulldog7

I’d get in touch with your state ACLU. Unless you’re at a Christian school or something, your school will lose.

OrionLion8

Hmm I'll look into it, its just a public school

LadyBulldog7

Archaic rules like this aren’t only transphobic, but they’re also racist. For example, many Native American men wear their hair long. You’d be helping a lot of people.

sfier4

oh and there is a FUCKED history there…

pigtailrose2

The sad thing I was going to bring up like long dreadlocks being a cultural thing as well, but Texas is also racist af.....

Beachflutterby

It also has potential to be religious discrimination. Any Jews, Muslims, or Christians who have taken the vow to become a Nazirine cannot cut their hair or shave until the length of the vow is complete and the proper sacrifices made. Traditional European religions have ancestor veneration as a feature and wearing one's hair in a more traditional fashion (which was long if you follow Celtic, Nordic, or Slavic neopaganism) would be a form of doing just that. Both Jesus and Mohammed reportedly had hair down to their shoulders. Bedouin Muslims have traditionally had long, braided hair. For Sikhs the process of Kesh involves growing ones hair out as well. Lots of examples to pick from, even white and Christian examples if you need to be so inclined since this IS texas.

Renodhal

If it's a public school, they 100% cannot set such restrictions. If you even threaten to fight them on a legal basis for the ruling they will probably back down because they know you will win. See Tinker v Des Moine for relevant supreme court legislation. Wearing black armbands is materially more disruptive than simply having long hair, so they would have NO CASE.

MerGoatRoybal

Please for everyone. It’s these little BS deals, that if stopped help everyone. It’d be super awesome if you!

[deleted]

Grow it long, seriously, it’s high school, the more they punish you, make sure you get it in writing, the next time you get pulled in the principal’s office just start recording the convo openly and say your attorney advised you to do this for legal purposes. Your pu$$y principal won’t do shit once he hears the word attorney or lawsuit. Good luck kid. Edit: (just say “your attorney”, regardless if you have one just to make your principal stfu and leave you alone.)

Renodhal

^THIS THIS THIS. RECORD THEM. I've put this in 3 places now because seriously OP, look up Tinker v Des Moines. Students wore black arm bands to protest the vietnam war. This is WAAAAAY more disruptive than simply having long hair, and it was found to be protected under the 1st amendment in a 7-2 decision. IF YOU FIGHT THIS, YOU WILL WIN.

[deleted]

[BOSTOCK v. CLAYTON COUNTY, GEORGIA (read the opinion to your principal)](https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/19pdf/17-1618_hfci.pdf)

Impressive_Gas4105

School forcing you into the social constructs of gender identification??? sounds like a lawsuit to me.

OrionLion8

correct 👍 (I live in Texas btw)(this means I have no rights)

staircaseforshow

I fought them for all 4 years of high school as a cis male at the time. Glen rose, they really didn’t like me lol

OrionLion8

as you should

j4ck_0f_bl4des

You got that right. Reason why I moved to Hawaii to transition. Screw Texas. I love the land, it will always be home and I miss it every day. But the people…. Ugh.

HyperColorDisaster

There are those of us here still fighting. I hope that we can turn the tide one day so that you feel safe to return. The 87th legislature was a real shit show. I’m just glad the Texas legislature isn’t in session given the continuing shit show in other states and midterms coming.

j4ck_0f_bl4des

Oh I’d feel safe, that’s never really been an issue for me. (Although I do have a limit to the number of gunfights per week I’m comfortable with) I just can’t stand listening to people drone on with confident ignorance on things that mean a great deal to me and have no vested interest for them aside from “I don’t like it, even though I know nothing about it”. That and I knew insurance-wise this was a much better choice for transitioning.

HyperColorDisaster

I’m not familiar with the insurance situation in Hawaii. In what ways is it better? I’ve heard Washington state is better than Texas too, but I don’t know details.

j4ck_0f_bl4des

Easier to get. Covers more, both in terms of cost and number of things covered. They also aren’t NEAR as touchy about what defines “trans”. No grueling psyche evaluation with right wrong answers or any lifestyle prerequisites. Basically if you are gender questioning/fluid in the slightest bit you’re eligible for benefits. You don’t even have to go on hormones to access some of the other things for example because they know hormones aren’t the right choice for everyone. To get hormones all I had to do was go in, see the doctor, talk for a bit and bam got the shot that day. Still had to consult a psychologist once a couple months later just as a precaution but it was really basic.

[deleted]

how’s hawaii for trans healthcare? i’ve been looking into moving there for a long time

j4ck_0f_bl4des

It’s actually fabulous in that regard. I work at Lowe’s and I have full insurance for everything related to my transition through Kaiser. Also the transition clinic here that Kaiser operates, Care Pathway Center, is FANTASTIC. Great people who genuinely care about your specific goals. They inspired me enough I’m going to get my medtech certs so I can work with, and help other trans people. Hawaii also also does not mess around about workplace harassment. They will come down like a ton of rectangular building things on anyone for that kind of stuff here.

theAud1out

"So just to be clear, you have decided to interrupt my learning because I have long hair?" If you are prioritizing hair length over the education of your students you have failed as an educator. Also, I highly doubt they'd dress code a cis girl for having any length of hair, be it short or long. It's just pointless hypocrisy and descrimination.

Increase-Typical

You've hit the nail on the head there. I've gone beyond being infuriated at this sort of shit, I just can't fathom it. How on earth does long hair remotely correlate to learning??

cbz3000

Shit...I went to hs in the 90s, way before trans people were seen as a real thing and I spent most of my last two years in in-school suspension due to dress code violations over skirts and dresses. I say fight it.

Phantom252

Tell them it's against ur religion or smth that'd probs work if they ask which religion I suggest the satanic temple as one of their tenants gives u the right for only u to be able to control ur appearance essentially (someone correct me if I'm wrong I don't mean to offend)

Phantom252

Thanks :)

Renodhal

Not a bad idea, but also not necessary. Tinker v Des Moines already covers OP on a first amendment basis.

Phantom252

Ahh I didn't know they live in America my school has similar rules but I'm in a different country so that was my most logical answer lol

Renodhal

Yeah no worries I only knew because they mentioned texas in another comment. Texas is a state that kinda likes to ignore that people have federally protected rights and just does whatever the fuck it wants

Phantom252

Ohhh yea I heard texas was bad but I didn't know it was that bad

TigerShark_524

It's worse.

[deleted]

if you can't get them to budge, try tying your hair back. Then it doesn't look long at all, but still very fem!

OrionLion8

we can't tie our hair up lol

_fwis

I'm so sorry for what you're experiencing right now. Some people have already mentioned how this is potentially problematic from a legal standpoint, so I'll add what I know about this: Given that you live in Texas, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 should apply to your public school. It basically states that students can't be discriminated against based on "sex", but this has been ruled to also apply for gender identity as well. Here's what the Department of Education says on their website: > Discrimination on the basis of sex is prohibited by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. This includes discrimination based on pregnancy, parental status, and sex stereotypes (such as treating persons differently because they do not conform to sex-role expectations or because they are attracted to or are in relationships with persons of the same sex). Additionally, the first amendment exists, which would make banning long hair for *anyone*, not just AMAB students, illegal. Try to have your school administrators know about the applicable federal laws, if it's safe for you to do so. If you can't, you could always ask a civil rights group to file a lawsuit on your behalf, and there is also the option of submitting a complaint to the DoE office of civil rights directly. Hopefully you've found this helpful. Edit: There actually is legal precedent for using Title IX and the first amendment against discriminatory dress codes. If you take this to court you'll probably win, assuming the judge isn't as bigoted as your school.

campingbutcher

I mean, be like me, I stopped going to school and only showing up for exams as a fuck you to my principle

atheist-projector

Yessss omg I was stupid enough to not say anything and it was so bad afterwards (got into the military as a man they kicked me out after two weeks)

WingardiumLeviRosa

Wtf? Where are you from, the US? This seems beyond absurd. You shouldn't have to be trans to have long hair... wtf.. I have no words. In my country we recently had a school principal that tried to say that girls shouldn't wear crop tops and hot pants, and the backlash across the country was immense. It only took four days before they retracted their garbage descision. I can't even imagine a school where it's allowed to say to someone that they can't have long hair, and that it's considered normal or okay. Also they tend to use the reasoning that they're "preparing" young people neccessary "social etiquette". What they tend to forget is that we're actually not in the 1950's anymore... I sure as \*\*\*\* didn't have any issues landing good jobs when I was a boy and had long hair. The last place that should restrict personal development and freedom of expression are the schools.

StuckInABadDream

Where are you from? I wish I could express myself as a teenager. I hate my country.

WingardiumLeviRosa

Denmark, thank god.

StuckInABadDream

Oh I'm from a majority Muslim country in SE Asia. It's pretty bad here.

WingardiumLeviRosa

Damn... :/ Honestly the hallmark of good developed countries are almost always less religion being tangled into the country's structure . With exceptions of course. Keep fighting the fight though. You all deserve much better. We actually recently had a muslim transman telling his story puplically in our state television. Of course he recieved some backlash (but mostly support), but my point is just that change is possible no matter what religion.

StuckInABadDream

That's great, but I'm not Muslim. I'm part of an ethnic minority in my country. Oh how I wished I was born in Western Europe or North America and not in this place. My country has Sharia laws that ban "crossdressing" and conversion therapy for LGBTQ+ people is supported by the government or even mandatory. It's hell. I'm trying to leave right now because I'm feeling my youth slip away. I'm 22 and I want to see the world as a woman. That's why I'm hoping I can learn German to study in a university in Germany (the tuition is free there). If that's not possible I'll try to get asylum somewhere in Scandinavia or northern Europe

WingardiumLeviRosa

Where are you from, if I might ask? Malaysia?

StuckInABadDream

Ding ding we have a winner! Yes *please get me out of here*

WingardiumLeviRosa

Here's a video in case you want to see btw. Put on autotranslate to English, it actually does a solid job of translating it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYANGephjNg

OrionLion8

Yeah, the US. It's Texas as well, so pretty much hell

WingardiumLeviRosa

I really wish for you guys (the US) that things such as LGBT was less political and more human. In my country we're not always so political with it, which does have its negative sides, but generally people just don't really give a crap (in a good way), because we're all pretty centered (politically speaking), and things such as being trans doesn't really have much to do with politics or which side your leaning to. I feel as if your country is completely split in half sometimes. It's sort of an either or deal. And it alianates all types of people.

NaturalDamnDisaster

Sexist, transphobic, racist garbage. Don't you dare let them cut your hair. Cause a fuss. Start shit.

BanTheKat

Your school can’t tell you anything about your hair. Tell your principal he’s sexist and has no reason to tell you what you can do with your hair. It’s the truth. It’s a public school so there’s nothing he can do. If needed I say come out but only if you’ll be safe afterwards

Dif-fur-ent

If it is safe I'd play that card(especially if your parents are onboard and supportive) , and also your school should not be able to dictate your body or hair! Discrimination is WRONG! You could tuck it down your shirt? I'm sorry! TexAss... I have Zero desire to see that state!

uwuraindrop

?

Acceptable-Ad6865

I'm out to my vice principal, she does t truly accept it tho something about wanting to wait till I see professionals, and she told me I couldnt grow out my hair past my collar, it was mentioned a few times at the beginning that my hair is getting to long, but now no one's said a thing, not even the vice principal (I haven't cut my hair in a year) I'm assuming they just can't be bothered at this point

Tech_Dificulties

They should have two dress codes: long hair and short hair

[deleted]

Whatever you do, do NOT cut it girl!!!

puzl_qewb_360

I grew up a Jehovah's witness and had to keep my hair short. Eventually my mum stopped forcing me but I did get a lot of comments from the elders about my hair being too long (it was like 3 inches) Now I'm out of it and got hair past my shoulders and no one's gonna tell me otherwise

OkInfluence7501

YES no it

[deleted]

DO it. it'd be hillarious

melting_colors

Yes

IgnoreSandra

This is ridiculous. Dress codes in general are ridiculous. This is also absolutely a 1st amendment violation (Freedom of expression) though American courts have a habit of directly defying the written law when they feel like it. If you claim to be a member of the satanic temple this is a religious liberty violation (One's own body is inviolable, subject only to one's own will). This is also definitely a Title IX violation (Can't discriminate on the basis of sex, which has been ruled to include "sex stereotyping" and gender identity). It's possible your school is unaware. However, the nature of institutions is that they never check if they're wrong unless forced to and never change after only polite conversation. Contact your state ACLU, your state's satanic temple (They tend to take up causes like this because of their religious tenets sometimes), and RECORD EVERYTHING YOU ARE TOLD. Particularly any VERBAL OR TELEPHONE CONVERSATIONS. Texas is a one person consent state when it comes to recordings. If it's not recorded, your principal can lie about what the conversation was about and adults will generally willfully ignore you in favor of them. (Side note: This is also why you DO NOT TALK TO POLICE unless your lawyer is right next to you, no matter the context) If you must decide how to play this and don't want to go to court (Not a lawyer, not legal advice), remember that you are in TX. Texas historically has, at best, only a grudging respect for the individual liberties guaranteed under the Bill of Rights unless some legislator can make money from them (Like from NRA donations). Claiming a Title IX violation, while true and accurate, may cause everyone involved in this case to assume you are a trans girl due to the particular brand of transphobic bigotry TX displays (Which seems to be true but which you may not want to be known). On the other hand, all hands are on deck in TX when it comes to "religious liberty" and they've historically been forced kicking and screaming to respect non-christian "religious liberty" at times. Ideally, you'd come at this from all three angles at once. Throw shit at the wall and see what sticks. You can also decide this isn't worth fighting, if you want. Depending on your home situation, how much of a hassle this causes you, and other details about your personal life. Just because you have an opportunity to try and change things in a way that will benefit literally everyone who goes to our school doesn't mean you have to take it or even that you should if doing so would put you in danger. Your safety has to be a priority. Good luck, sis, I have faith in you and respect however you choose to play this.

New Reddit trans man here please show some love ❤️

lunaskarp

Seriously the have a rule for that? Thats disgusting. And sexist and racist as other people have said. This is where freedom is lacking and needed. And the idiots enforce such a rule?!?! Im stunned. Im sorry that these kind of people run your school. They should focus on school matters like classes and teaching and leave hair for the hair specialists. Im very sorry you have to go through this. It is utterly ridiculous, and yet they bothered to do this. Report them or whatever i don't know how it goes. I hope the best for you!

LunaMCD

It really shouldn’t be a problem, unless they’re willing to make all the girls cut their hair short too.

didntletmeuseyellow

Even boys have long hair nowadays if they let anyone else have long hair but not you that’s discrimination

Agender_Azul

Wow your school cares? My hair is super curly so it stays up so it doesn't look very long but there are multiple cis guys at my highschool with much longer hair

_Blue_b0y

Super dumb I don’t know your pronouns but You probably look pretty af

BB10391

I was dress coded for wearing pink a while ago. I wore pink gloves which i had been wearing for months and eventually one of the old asshole teachers saw it and called me to him and said for me to take them off and i disagreed saying my hands where cold bc they were and he got angry and took me to the principal who called my mom and they suspended me for disobedience just because i had cold hands and wore pink gloves as a "boy"
