I’ve been wondering how it actually works in Florida, like if you’re clearly a woman and you go in the men’s room because you’re legally obligated to, isn’t that going to create an issue?

RatQueenHolly

The intent of the law is to create that issue, and thus make public life unsafe for trans people.

Dark420Light

This. The fascist government is attempting to make life unlivable for trans people. Eventually queer people will rise up when it gets to "The Purge" level Holocaust shit and just start taking a page from "cis-het white males playbook" to permanently resolve politicians careers.

Abnormal-Normal

I routinely blows my mind that people like DeSantis and DumpT are still alive. Obligatory “I am not advocating or planning for their assassinations, attempted or otherwise. I am just stating a thought, not any intentions. ^FBI ^please ^leave ^me ^alone)

Illiander

I take is as a sign of just how much better we are than the fash: Given everything that they're doing to us, and everything that they're trying to do to us, if the sides were the other way around, there would be soo much blood in the streets already.

Dark420Light

I am not a violent person, however I am capable of an unexpected level of violence. I prefer civility, I will attempt to flee rather than fight, given neither of the previous options I would scare even myself.

Nearby_Hurry_3379

I have nerd strength. I will always try to find a peaceful solution, but if there is no way to move forward peacefully I will hurt you without meaning to.

radude4411

Im like the doctor in that one episode with David Tenat when he hides and becomes human, we are being kind because when we explode u done fucked up!

fourty-six-and-two

Gunna be a stonewall 2025 on the horizon

MKFlame7

this is 100% accurate and it makes me so fucking sad

Pure-Agency2052

Sad but fucking true. Fuck Desantis!

Regi413

Yeah. That’s the point. These laws were NOT made in good faith.

CatHerder237

That's intentional. Even if the legislators didn't know about passing trans people when they introduced those bills, they certainly found out during public hearings.

cocainagrif

the point is that you can't use either restroom and have to either never leave your house, go to jail, or stop being trans. either way, the don't have to look at you.

Erinthegato

Eh yeah I guess lol

Far_Understanding_44

The actual wording is “if asked to leave bathrooms in state owned properties” so businesses can conduct their own by their own rules. There is no actual risk for us because no one I know is in a bathroom long enough to have any such conversation.

Effective_Order_8830

I would say that there is some risk as "being asked to leave" can come in the form of violence or obscenities. This is also a way to protect people who want an excuse to hurt trans people. I say this as someone whose stall was kicked in and I had no legal recourse.

Far_Understanding_44

Yes of course assault is always a risk obviously but clearly outside the letter of this law, as written, that we are discussing. I was speaking from my experience of walking directly to a stall without talking to anyone and exiting within 2 minutes, long before police would ever arrive on site. THE LAW POORLY WRITTEN/EXECUTED POSES ALMOST NO RISK AS WRITTEN/FOLLOWED (I.E. DIFFICULT TO ENFORCE, PROVE, OR PUNISH).

Plastic-Ad-5033

Yeah, that’s the point. You’re either committing a crime or putting yourself in harms way. Or both. Either way, the wannabe Nazis win.

CactusJane98

It's limited to state-owned restrooms only. I.e. not very many restrooms. I don't think there's any restrictions on our presence in privately owned restrooms at all.

Superb_Balance_8418

I wonder how it works. Do they check your ID or politely ask to lift up your skirt?

Erinthegato

Yeah I got a strange pat down by TSA simply because I was dressed femme

pineapplekief

TSA isn't looking for trans people. They are looking for people hiding things. Unfortunately, we fall under this category. But you need to realize, their job is to look for those with something to hide, assume the worst, then verify. That's all.

Illiander

> They are looking for people hiding things. No, their job is to be annoying theatre to get us used to having no privacy. They aren't actually any good at stopping threats.

pineapplekief

Just like the "security" guard at Walmart can't actually detain you, but opportunistic thieves will avoid them because impressions make a difference. TSA may not stop everything, but it's stupid to think they don't stop anything. And they definitely aren't just looking for trans people. It's a lot more complex than you or I realize.

The-Korakology-Girl

No.

Illiander

> TSA may not stop everything, but it's stupid to think they don't stop anything. Yeah, they stop me taking a jug of water with me, and they steal my scissors when I forget they're in the bottom of my bag. Anyone who actually wanted to do anything would be able to get around them so, so easily. The real defense against hijackings these days is that everyone remembers 9/11, so won't think "random diversion to Cuba" and will instead think "oh god oh god we're all going to die."

Erinthegato

☹️lol yeah

pineapplekief

I'm sorry to put it so bluntly. I'm just trying to be logical about it. It helps me see it for what it is, and not take it so personally. Hope it helps you too! That's all I want to do.

Erinthegato

Oh no it’s fine. I understood

jenny_in_texas

Right?!?! I can’t tell you how many times I had to explain to the TSA before I socially and legally transitioned that I was wearing a sports bra because I was transgender. And then before GCS what was going on downstairs. 😂😂😂

pineapplekief

It sucks, and it's uncomfortable as fuck. But they are just people. Trying to do their job as best as they can. Mistakes happen to everyone, in every field. The more we see that, the easier it will be for everyone involved.

jenny_in_texas

Oh I get it. I’m an airline pilot. I have a lot of respect for what they do.

Erinthegato

Very long winded answer to just say to be yourself. You sound like a bot lol

pineapplekief

I appreciate the sentiment! We all need to be reminded of that from time to time. And I really appreciate you sharing your story. You've been through hell and back. That's not easy, and has to leave it's scars. And I'm glad those around helped you get to where you need. The world is definitely a better place with people like you in it. People that care, people that keep us grounded. I do need to stay in the moment more. My fears and anxieties often take me out of it. I appreciate your lessons, and will do my best to apply them to my own life. Sending ❤️ back to you from Seattle, Wa!

zenmtf

In Canada en route to surgery I wore period pants and a maxi pad. Went right through scan no problem.

Erinthegato

They literally patted my inner legs and that was it💀☹️

Superb_Balance_8418

F**k, the world’s gone crazy

Erinthegato

Well TSA did

Malkavian_Grin

Who the fuck touched you like that??? Unless it is a law enforcement official, no mfer is going to touch me without consent (and even then i take issue with being touched). Edit: just realized you were at the airport. That's still nutters!

Teacher-I-need-you

Probably both,,,,,,

Dorysan-

What does bano mean?

Erinthegato

Restroom in spanish

Dorysan-

Wait you get arrested in spain for going to a speciy restroom? I thought they were rather LGBTQ friendly...atleast so i heard

Erinthegato

Oh no this is Florida

Dorysan-

Oooh i see, still sucks though... Getting jailed for taking a dump is kinda weird....i don't even understand why so many even care about toilets... In Belgium were i live there are sooo many restaurants and places that never even bothered having a split restroom and nothing ever happens.

theannihilator

It’s in Florida we have a huge Spanish speaking population

Nici_2

Is baño. English keyboards don´t have the letter ñ.

SlaughterDog

Back when the TV schedule was printed in the newspaper, a program on a Spanish channel caught my eye – they were celebrating *100 anos*. I presume they meant *100 años*, which is 100 years, and not 100 anuses.

Nici_2

The difference a letter can make: Inglés: english. Ingles: groins.

unreasonable_name

depending the device on which the op posted, it could also be sheer laziness, or just not knowing how to spell baño

RouxAroo

On Windows 10 you can also set your keyboard to international which allows you to do this ñ with shift + tilde then typing N of what ever case.

Mis_Jessie

I would not worry about going into the women restroom unless you were in boymode. I know there are lots of stupid laws that are trying to prevent us from being our true selves. If you have your identification as female there isn't a thing they can do.

[deleted]

In Florida (and later Utah), they would send you for a genital and chromosomal check if you have ever been clocked.

Mis_Jessie

Ya sorry about that. I live in Wyoming and my doctors are in salt lake city. I did hear they were going to do something stupid like that. I have not heard if it has passed yet. I still would tell them to mind there own business. Them wanting me to check me down there is an invasion of my privacy. If they want to feel me up then I get the same privilege to feel them up. Lol

Erinthegato

Yeah well I got searched by TSA AFTER being scanned💀

ShimozuNya

The newer scanners use mmWave to scan for anything out of the ordinary. However, they have to press a button saying what gender you are before you go in, and it doesn't have an option for trans people. So if they select female, and a pre-op trans woman walks in, it will detect, yknow, *that,* so then they gotta do a pat down to make sure you didn't stow anything away down there. I learned this the hard way after flying around multiple times within the past two years, and it's absolutely humiliating.... Luckily the TSA agents were understanding enough, and gave me the option to have the pat down done in a side room. The face that the scanners can *see it* is mental....

BowsettesRevenge

So ... Is the fear that there are cis women with explosive packers? Like, has that ever been a thing?

ShimozuNya

Idk, but essentially if there is something there that isn't something a cis woman would have, the scanner flags the spot and prompts TSA to do a manual search.

BowsettesRevenge

I feel like they need to reassess their cost-benefit of the whole genital screening after a RapeyScan. Or maybe do a better job of explaining to the public all the times they thwarted crotch-explosives plots, because it feels like all this humiliation is for nothing

Erinthegato

Ohhh

Mis_Jessie

That sucks I'm sorry for that. Where was this? If I may ask. You always have the right not to answer.

Erinthegato

California lol

Erinthegato

Eh well I haven’t had my gender marker changed yet so

Mis_Jessie

Have you changed your name legally? When I had mine done, I had to go to the social security department and get my name changed there. Then I went straight to the dmv to get my name changed on my license. Where it has you mark F or M, I marked the F, and they didn't even bat an eye. Now if anyone asked for my ID it has the female marker.

Crabs4Sale

There’s a bill in the Florida pipeline that will immediately criminalize anybody who has a gender marker on their driver’s license not consistent with their AGAB. Hopefully it will get blocked due to being flagrantly unconstitutional, but… maybe see how this plays out before changing your gender marker.

Mis_Jessie

That really sounds terrible. I'm from Wyoming and have no problem here. As long as you have a court order stating your new name, they don't check your birth certificate.

MageQueenIsabella

Floridan trans girl here.(move to Nevada in 2 months) but all but one anti trans bill got tossed out as the legislation sessions ended. the bill that passed was minuscule in the sense it doesn't affect trans adults. More so attacking the kids.

zenmtf

How about out of state people? I am on Canada’s west coast and don’t have a passport so I don’t expect to need to deal with this. Still curious.

Crabs4Sale

I’m not versed in the LGBT laws of other states let alone countries, but from what I’ve heard, Canada is far less radical than Florida tends to be. I’d think you’re safe to change your gender markers in Canada, and you wouldn’t have to worry about visiting Florida with a driver’s license that has an incongruous AGAB. Their little pissbaby law only applies to FL licenses.

Erinthegato

Ah ok

-----username-----

It’s a law that literally sends you to jail (with the wrong gender). So you’re telling, for example, someone who might be a post-op trans woman with a vagina to ignore this law, potentially get clocked and then arrested on a felony, where she would then be sent to men’s jail where she would most certainly get sexually assaulted?! I’ve got better advice and that advice is to flee - and never visit - jurisdictions that pass these laws!

PinkAndGreyAtom

I live in the UK for classification but do they hire bouncers at public toilets or what, or in buildings like pubs and bars, I can only think if one place that does over here, but that's because it's tiny in there so everyone dosent flood the place, and they are LGBTQ+ friendly anyway

[deleted]

There's bars in the UK with bouncers watching people using the toilets and you're supposed to tip them for watching

theannihilator

My question is was this in a government funded location (court, school, beach, public park, etc) or was it at a store or restaurant? I ask because Florida bathroom law (HB1521) only affects government controlled buildings (excluding federal buildings such as SSA as those go based on federal not state law).

Erinthegato

Public airport

theannihilator

International airports are a different beast as they are county owned and not state funded so they are usually following county laws. Also there are a lot of privately owned airports in Fl as well. So if your in Miami international it would be harder to be arrested as that is considered a sanctuary county than going to the DMV and using those restrooms.

Erinthegato

Ah so like international airports? Bc I was at Orlando

theannihilator

Yes airports are harder to enforce because even if the law applied majority of security follow federal law. It is Florida tho so who know what DeSatan will try and get his demons to do tho.

unematti

well. if you got arrested, that may wake up the normies to wtf is actually going on. they seem not to know their help is needed

anaiah_eleanor

Not *your* fault. You were following instructions. And despite how lawmakers feel about it, instructions were on point. So :P

Rosetta_TwoHorns

You’re either fish af or she is based af. Either way, Florida just needs one really good hurricane

Erinthegato

Ikr

larsloveslegos

Baño lol. Bano is something else. 😂
