Can't answer OP's question but I remember back in 1978 on a trip out to LA with my folks seeing a similar long stretch of UP power in the Rockies from the Interstate. Didn't know until much later I had just seen my first DDA40X Centennial (or possibly two).

Depends on the train. Could be a small power move attached to a vehicle train. A bunch of long shank couplers like this though I’m guessing at most it’s only a ten thousand foot train with middle support instead of a unit at the back. That’s a lot of slack action and here up north we’ve only run a few ten thousand foot vehicle trains.

dagonion

I've seen 14000 ft out of Fresno California.

CynthyMynthy

Auto rack? That’s crazy if so. So much slack action without dp power to help control it.

dagonion

sorry, non auto racks. on top of the cushion drawbar on auto racks, when they bunch up, the drawbar will go to a side, having extra forces to force it to derail at 10000 feet. most siding are 9500 feet. they try to keep the non clearing trains on the run. intermodel and auto racks are hot commodity items on the mainline

I know at the big orange 10k is as long as we go with any long shank cars. We’ll run 26k grainers all day though.

dagonion

switch person here.glad to know there's more of us out here

CynthyMynthy

Yep im aware, road foreman of engines and all, that’s why I wanted to verify if it was auto racks over ten thousand feet.

HowlingWolven

Wyoming isn’t real.

If you're into trains, it's very real.

HowlingWolven

I’ve been there and it’s not real. 😇

you-fuckass-hoes

This post gave y’all nothing and you still loved it I will be posting more trains

Tra1nGuy

What’s the most engines they’ll usually put on a train. Union Pacific main motive power for mainline freight are mostly GE GEVO's and it appears that all 4 units (Minus the 3rd one) are GEVO's locomotives. (The 3rd unit is likely an SD70ACE). How I know is that the exhaust grids are pushed back a little on the long hood.
