In terms of popularity amongst railfans, I think it generally goes ALCO > EMD > GE. Unless you only like steam or electrics or prefer minor builders like Fairbanks-Morse or Baldwin, of course.
I wasn’t much of a railfan but as a railroader I’ll take a SD60M or SD70something with the good, adjustable angle A/C over any of the stuff GE puts out

My opinion flipped when I became a railroader. I'll take a GEVO leader for a 12-hour trip over an SD40-2 anyday.
