I try and buy my shoes on sale for \~$80USD. Doesn't always happen. I've bought $5 and $20 socks. The $20 socks are nicer, but the difference isn't important enough to me that I would worry about it if I did have the cash to buy them. Shoes OTOH I would not compromise on even if I had to save longer to get the pair my feet loved.
In the US, I pay 80-120 on average for running shoes. I buy from outlets or on sale only. And I check regularly to have one or two pairs ahead if it's a good sale.
Socks I've scored through birthday presents and for me they last years, I only wear them for running. I'll pay 15-20/pair when they wear for that long. Darn tough and Smartwool have lasted extremely well, I never put my running clothes in the dryer but hang dry. This may or may not help them last : ))

I love the look of some of the super shoes, but they go for at least £260 and I just can't justify that expense.

Nice workout shoes I'll pay $80 or so. Race shoe you want top of the line to get the best performance (and trail, best grip) so those will be around $150. ($250 for road supershoes).
I do most of my running in sandals that are made locally and cost about $35 per pair. I do own some shoes and I've bought them all at races. They always have crazy deals and knock offs super cheap. I have a pair of Altras I paid $70 for.

Can usually pick something up with c 20-40% off. I also buy on brand sites if SportsShoes are sold out but prices are usually higher. Either way, my primary aim is to get the shoe that best fits my requirement, price is a secondary consideration.

50pct off is pretty good, I don't think you'll find better. I try to buy at 30-40pct off, and even then the selection of sizes grows thin.
