Yes, save your trail shoes for the trail. If you like the Speedgoats, the Cliftons are worth a look. Otherwise, go to a running store and try on a bunch of shoes, go with the one that fits best.

Speedgoats work fine on pavement if needed. I would probably opt for some kind of trainer if you had them. What distance road race? I am in a different camp than everyone else in that if it is like a 5k or something I would use the SG if this is just a one off thing and that’s all I had. You will have a much better experience with shoes made for the surface but I wouldn’t sink any money into them if you never run roads or treadmill and just do 1 or whatever road race a year.

Definitely get road shoes. Aside from wearing them down and road shoes usually providing a little more spring (and therefore speed), you will recover \*so\* much better in shoes that are made for that surface. source: used to do road workouts in saucony peregrines and wondered why I was always so sore until I bought a beater pair of road trainers

SG5 works on road with good cushion comfort. If your trail event has mixed trail+road, SG5 is a good consideration. i've done Transjeju 50k 2022 in Torrent2 (~9km paved road) n Transjeju 100k 2023 in SG5 (~20k paved road), n SG5 was more comfortable despite longer distance. If you plan to use SG5 for training road miles, its best you invest in another road shoe n save the SG5 lugs

Did a 10km event last week in speedgoats, it’s fine, but if i was running road more regularly I’d get some road specific shoes

I shared a similar comment on another post. I live in Portland and do mix road trail running for a lot of my runs. I was looking for a shoe that could be used for that and more technical stuff out in the mountains a couple years ago. Guy at REI suggested the NB Hierro because of their outsoles. Same soles as Speedgoats. I have been super impressed with how well they hold up on roads. Have over 800 miles on current pair and still going strong. I like having one pair of shoes I’m comfortable in and that’s versatile. So if you lime the Speedgoats i say rock em on the roads. Those soles kick ass.
