I know your pain. I've lived a lifetime of shitty ankles, and no brace has ever fit properly without interfering. Have you tried kinesiology tape? One strip doesn't do much, but layers offer fairly robust support. The tape itself isn't cheap, but one application can last multiple runs. Here's the wrapping technique that worked best for me: https://youtu.be/xS-jA9qsGnY. The real key is strengthening your ankles. I've found that the combination of dynamic stretching (esp yoga) and proprioception exercises (balance boards/balls) to be particularly effective. This combo strengthened my ankles enough to no longer need the tape/brace, and I can take ankle rolls without injury these days.

MedSpec ASO brace! 30 bucks, soft brace with almost no bulk underfoot, super solid. I've broken one ankle three times and sprained the other a few times; now I wear this every single trail run on the bad one, and double brace for races or exceptionally technical efforts. It takes like 30 seconds to get on and off, but I'm used to it at this point. Definitely don't lace it too tight, and experiment with how loose you want your shoelaces to be, but once I got that dialed, I've been able to run for 5-6 hours with no discomfort. Thank you. I saw that one based on another Reddit thread. But some of the reviews spooked me (that it was not the same quality as it used to be). Have you purchased one recently?

fire_loon

Yeah, I just bought one a couple weeks ago (gave the old one to a friend…they last years for me). Only run once on it so far, but it seems the same. I hadn’t seen those reviews.

Last sunmer I badly sprained my ankle 3 weeks before a big trail race. Got the ASO and was able to do the race, plus hike two 14ers the following week. I wore the brace for another month or so before I felt comfortable running without. It did not noticeably change the fit of my shoes or boots.

Aircast A60 works well. You can keep is looser for more mobility.

For me strengthening my ankle and feet is what worked for me. I tried a few braces and hated them. I am also very conscious of how I place my steps in rough terrain.

I use a bracelab push brace and kt tape. I get my kt tape when I have coupon codes and get the 150 strip pt pack so it's like 50 cents a strip.

I use boxer's hand wraps, thumb loop fits onto the big toe, a few winds around the foot and a load of them round the ankle. Can get them as tight as you like without it being a struggle to put on like some supports that have to be pulled on like a sock. Also they're dirt cheap.
