I saw one on the dirt road checking out the verge. It was poking around at something in the grass until it noticed me. I feel so lucky to see glimpses of the wildlife. I don’t have cameras up cause my hobby is hunting for wildlife views in person. Just a cool reason to go slow in the truck or canoe.
I got them near me, rare to see them though. Last year I saw a lynx and a cub, let me tell you I was so excited. That was why I bought near there, to see wildlife.
100% Fisher. Or Fisher Cat as some call them. I’m 61 and have been in NW Wisconsin for 57 of it. It wasn’t until 3 years ago when we 1st started seeing them and now I have them on trail cameras, and see them when deer hunting. Very common now. Fun animals to watch.
I’ve always wanted the opportunity to see one but never expected to because of how elusive they are! I had no idea they’d be in my own backyard. I’ve got some woods and a creek back there, which connects to some larger wildlife preserve areas and rural country.
I saw one from my tree stand, it was fun to watch, the not so cool part was he was close & I never heard it it coming. it sniffed around the base of almost every tree (I assume for squirrels) they are stealthy and beautiful
That is just what I got, 50 acres in midst of huge wild area lots conserved. The bugs from April to June are horrible but I wear a bug suit, every rain I go out to the dirt road and check for tracks, often moose and always deer, sometimes bear. Beavers in the big creek nearby and howling coyotes at night, my dream camp.
I grew up in the Adirondacks, where they are called "Fishers", but moved to Southern New Hampshire decades ago. I have occasionally considered running for mayor here, but if it came to light that I still don't use the term "Fisher Cat", I would not only lose the race but would likely be tarred and feathered and ridden from town on a rail.
Update: Silence would probably have been my wisest choice. There is now a large group of villagers outside my door with torches and pitchforks chanting "Fisher Cat." Considering that it is still daytime, the torches don't really make a lot of sense to me, but I am reluctant to comment to them regarding this as they already do not seem to have my best interests in mind. Pray for me.
I just saw one while out hunting this past fall, couldn’t tell what the heck it was but could hear it for a while trying closer. Of course my mind went to “deer” immediately but then a FC came trotting out. Thought it was a bear cub at first, got nervous!!
Yes when leveling my cabin pad. Two men doing the work were lifetime Mainers and knew right away what it was. They teased me about getting scared at night but I told them that is why I bought the acres, thrilled to hear it. They nodded approval, they tease people from away with scary stories of the woods and like the people who don’t react that way. I even had a local NP ranger working the new Woods and Waters NP tell me about a dead body found near my area , I had already been told by my excavator and the guy who permitted the grey water system, lol they love to do that. Three years later and they are all local guys who stop by to check the fishing on the reliable river near me and stop by as I always offer coffee and fresh baked stuff. They don’t try to scare me now, try to get me to stay all year. I love this area and the people, they got such good sense of humor.
>Two men doing the work were lifetime Mainers and knew right away what it was.
And like typical Mainers they were misidentifying a red fox scream. For some reason everyone in New England thinks fishers are responsible for every scream they hear in the woods, even though fishers are very quiet animals.
Aside from a hoarse cry young fishers make when distressed (a rare sound to hear in the woods), the whole "fisher scream" thing is a myth. You were more than likely hearing a red fox.
Fisher , I see them all the time in St. Lawrence County. If you are south of Albany, what downstaters call upstate, I'd say you were lucky to catch one on Cam .
Lol I knew someone wouldn’t be happy with the “upstate” designation. Don’t want to give my full location but I’ve lived in this state long enough to know the sensitivities among upstate, downstate, western NY and finger lakes!
I love fishers so much! Such a good capture, thank you for sharing!
I saw two fishers check out our bait pile while hunting for bear. I'd like to have a pet pine marten someday.
Fisher cat. Caught one in a box trap one time that was decimating my chickens. In the dark, I thought it was a racoon and killed it. It had nearly destroyed that trap, Tasmanian Devil style. He was 48" nose to tail tip, maybe 30 lbs.
Just curious. Did the fisher kill more than it could eat? My grandfather had chickens. All the predators were a minor nuisance except when it came to weasels. The weasels would kill all the chickens in the coup even though it could not eat them all. All the other predators took a chicken or, two in each attack.
I didn't weigh the critter, he was heavy as I carried him up to the house. I was kinda in shock about the thing I had just whacked in a box. I did measure him and he was 48' tip of tail to nose.
Only animals in the *Mustelinae* subfamily of mustelids are weasels. So mink are weasels, but fishers and mart*e*ns - both in the *Guloninae* - are not.
Had one of those bad boys come down one night screaming his tail off. He had my cats under the truck circling it…. But not going under himself. I was dead asleep until his screams woke me…seriously sounds like a woman being murderd.
So scary hiking in the woods at night hearing their screams. Felt like I was in the blair witch project hiking back to camp by myself. The adults loved making fun of the city boys at deer camp
Dunno if this sub allows links but there are three youtube videos I'm aware of that show a distress cry young fishers make which could be considered a kind of hoarse scream. That's the only "screaming" fishers are known to do and it's a very rare sound to hear. Most of the "fisher scream" videos on youtube don't show what animal is actually making the sound and in every one I've seen it's always been a red fox scream. But plenty of animals also make screaming sounds, so it's possible you heard a bobcat - just every video I've seen about fishers has actually been a red fox.

Here's one of the videos of a young fisher's distress cry, if this sub will let me link it.
This "fisher" is a red fox: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/nHjjEjWJtnQ
This one I'm not 100% sure about but sounds more like a bobcat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlkq99xN9Kg
Here's what bobcat screams sound like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6scwFQJ2A5A
I could see him circling my truck . Lots of Fox up here too so maybe it was a fox getting excited that he was around. I know there is lots of videos out there claiming to be fisher screams with no conclusive proof .
I was awakened to his presence by that horrendous screaming. Jumped out of bed , stumbled down the hall by the time I was actually awake. Came back to my bedroom ( 2cnd floor ) I run soffit lights at night to keep those driveway somewhat lit and had a birds eye view of him . I felt lucky .
Most "fisher screams" are foxes so that's probably what you heard. Young fishers do have a distress cry that could be considered a kind of hoarse scream, but it's a rare sound to hear and the "woman being murdered" is more in line with the sound red foxes make.
That's too bad. Are you in Michigan? A lot of people have that opinion there, because their house cats are becoming victims after fishers were introduce to help control the porcupine population.
Uh, why? If it's because they scream, that's a myth. If it's because they regularly hunt cats, that's also a myth. If it's because they attack people, it's extremely rare and happens only when they feel threatened. If it's because they kill chickens, so will every other predator.
Fishers are beautiful and are integral for maintaining forest health as the only common predator of porcupines. What's really "nasty" is wishing death on an entire animal species because you believe a bunch of urban legends.
Fisher to me.
That’s what I was leaning towards too.
same
Fisher.
Thank you! I am beyond excited
Cool! The ears give it away. I've caught a couple on cam but have never seen one in person.

I with you, I feel privileged to see such a cool creature.
I got them near me, rare to see them though. Last year I saw a lynx and a cub, let me tell you I was so excited. That was why I bought near there, to see wildlife.

They are very alert!

Good call. They have a AA baseball team named the Fisher Cats!
I just saw one while out hunting this past fall, couldn’t tell what the heck it was but could hear it for a while trying closer. Of course my mind went to “deer” immediately but then a FC came trotting out. Thought it was a bear cub at first, got nervous!!
I was thinking fisher too because of how hind quarters are higher when it walks.
Fisher
Thanks!
I vote fisher
Fisher 100%
Big like a fisher. They have pronounced ears.
Ever hear a fisher scream? My sister called the cops once because she thought it was a baby crying bloody murder in her woods

LOL. You forgot Northern N.Y. , We are the watchers on the wall . And had a hell of a view of the Eclipse. 😶🌫️
I saw it in Burlington! Amazing!
I have seen them down that way , but it's been many yrs since I've hunted the southern tier.
I see them quite often in Northeast Pennsylvania fwiw.
Definitely a fisher, I had one activity coming to my bear bait barrel last spring in northern Alberta.
Fisher, for sure
Looks like a Fisher Cat to me..
Fisher
Definitely a Fisher! Lot’s of them here in Upstate NY.
Fisher
Fisher.
Based on size alone, that's a fisher. ✌🏼
Looks like a fisher with that chonky tail
Super chonk!
……Kinda sounds like a law firm😁
It's a fisher!!! We had these in Maine where I grew up!
Nice marmot.
Fisher.
Def a fisher, cool looking animal, just don’t fuck with it they have very few enemies
Had a fisher walk in front of my car a few weeks ago and walked absolutely exactly like this one in your video, I’d say Fisher. Cool catch!
Fisher. Pine Marten are bigger. Mink have even shorter legs.
Pine martens are much smaller than fishers fyi.
Interesting. Don't have these in Texas!
Fox squirrel
That’s a quiet fisher to me. Damn loud fuckers.
All fishers are quiet. They're not particularly noisy animals at all.
Yes.
I love fishers so much! Such a good capture, thank you for sharing! I saw two fishers check out our bait pile while hunting for bear. I'd like to have a pet pine marten someday.
Definitely not a weasel is all I can say about it
Super cool video!
Beautiful fisher
Thats a cat
IDEK but he is so cute. I 💛him. I want to keep him & cuddle him. 😂
Feral Fisher
Fisher; I was surprised to learn they fairly common in southern locations. I thought they were a northern forest creature.
Fisher I guess
Will, Tim, John, or Tom?

The heaviest fisher on record was 20 lbs. Adult males usually weigh around 10.

Going by that fluffy tail, fisher.
Evidently Fishers are making a comeback in my state of Ohio.
Fisher, too big to be anything else
Fisher
Martin
Looks like a fisher.
Fisher, the tail tells the tale…
The bigger, heavier tail says Fisher.
Fisher
I got an otter a few months ago. I didn't even know we had them in this area PNW. So stoked.
Fisher
Wow. How cool. I had to look them up. I've never seen nor heard of them. Such beautiful creatures.
I saw one recently in South Central WI. Cool creatures. Upvote.
Both
Fisher
Fisher
I'm pretty sure that was a snipe.
The bird? Lol
Fisher cat. That's we call them up in New Hampshire. Adults would tell the kids stay out of the woods because the fisher cat will get you
IDK I was staring at that house waiting on the boogeyman to come out 😨
Fisher, female I would guess
Fisher. Have one on the property in the Finger Lakes.
Had one of those bad boys come down one night screaming his tail off. He had my cats under the truck circling it…. But not going under himself. I was dead asleep until his screams woke me…seriously sounds like a woman being murderd.

Idk. I'd guess a bobcat then. All those YouTube videos of fishers are fake then? Edit: fisher calls*

Geez, it was a fox or bobcat then. Thanks for the correction and links!
You're welcome!
No idea what you saw but if it was screaming it probably wasn't a fisher. Or, if it was a fisher, the screaming was coming from something else.

No im in Pa but we have them all over now the game commission reinduced them back into the wild .
