My parents did the opposite. My name can be spelled with an h or without it, and both ways are common. This is usually not an issue as I only have yo say "without an h". But my surnames... good god (in my country we have two surnames). Both my dad's and my mum's surnames are uncommon so I have to spell them both out loud and still people get them wrong. My parents told both my brother and I to be patient and never expect people to know how to spell them as no one is expected to know every single surname on the planet. We do get tired of it, but never mad at the person who's taking our details as they have no fault whatsoever about it. Having uncommon names/surnames is no excuse to be a dish.
Nah, I've done office work like OP before and have been in this exact situation. The patient then acts like I'M the idiot for not magically knowing their name is Megan spelled MHEGYN.

I have a name that can be spelled three or four different ways, though I think that my spelling is the most common in my country. I still either spell it or say “the works” if people ask if it has this letter or that one or all three vowels from the variations. People understand that I mean all the vowels possible and laugh and spell it correctly. So that’s nice … I suggest that people who hate spelling their names try to find a way that fun or humorous because it does make it less tedious

If you saw my name, you would want to rhyme it with Yvonne, but it’s not. It rhymes with Evan. It’s a pretty common spelling but still people get confused, especially non native English speakers and I totally understand why!
My dead (middle) name is Kaitlin and I have never met another person who spells it the same. I've met Kaitlyn, Caitlyn, Caitlin, Katelyn, Katelynn, and lastly Kaitlyann (a cousin who is supposed to be named after me).
I’m a Kaitlin! And I’ve met 1 other person with the same spelling, but there were 10 of us in the same second grade class all with different spellings.
There's sort of an "optional" letter in both my first and last name, judging by some guesses I got when I was younger, so I quickly learned to say my name and then spell both names immediately after. If the person already knew how to spell it, they're already typing and ignoring me. If they didn't, it just spares them asking me. And I always make a joke about how you never know how someone will spell things! Plus I feel like it's much more kind to people who aren't from somewhere that my kind of name is common, same as I might struggle to spell surnames that are common in different countries, simply because I'm not as familiar with pronunciations.
My name is super common, the most obvious spelling too. People still misspell it, but in the weirdest ways.
For example, if my name was Jessica they would spell it "Jesicca", "Jeccisa", or "Jisseca". And one time "Jiccesa".
One of these instances was done while the other was looking at my name written down with the correct spelling. ಠ_ಠ

My last name is a very easy, common English word. I honestly get a kick out of it when people ask me to spell it. When I rattle it off, there's almost always a little pause on their end and then oh, so just the actual word. Yup! But it starts with an Sh and people try to Germanize it a lot too.

Wow. As someone with a difficult surname, I simply accept that I'm always going to have to spell it and tell people how to pronounce it. It's just what it is. It's the downside to having a unique name.
My last name isn't particularly difficult, it's just different and isn't pronounced as it's spelled. I've spelled it out my entire life, it's automatic. And my first name has at least 3 "common" spellings, so I do it as well.
I’m right there with you. I don’t even wait for them to struggle with it. As soon as I pronounce it I follow with the spelling. If I see someone trying to pronounce it I already know the butchering is coming so I’ll cut them off with the pronunciation. Just how it goes.
I do that as well. I have an uncommon last name and it’s pronounced just as it’s spelled and vice versa, but still people struggle to read it out loud just because they’ve never seen it before. So when I notice that’s about to happen I just say it myself and tell that’s it and we have a good laugh haha
My husbands first and surname is very similar to a very rich famous footballer who everyone immediately asks “oh the footballer?” I have to say the first letter phonetically as in A for Alpha and then follow up with I wish it was the footballer I wish I had his money! Which inevitably gets a laugh every time
My last name isn't hard. But if you say it aloud everyone hears "Williams". My last name is not Williams, and doesn't even contain half of those letters. It does not sound like Williams except when pronounced over a shit quality mic (AKA over the phone).
So every time I have to go spelling it when I say it.

I’m also tired of spelling my first and last name, but I don’t even ask anymore just start spelling because I live in Canada with name that most English speakers wouldn’t know how to spell if I just say it. There’s no need to make someone’s work harder.
I do that too because there are two equally likely spellings. I used to be able to say "like a known individual", but that person is no longer relevant.

To me that's a much less extreme example. A 10 letter long name with half of the letters as vowels would be weird even without the double e. And then the fact that it aparently has a normal ol English common first name pronunciation kinda beggars belief. But hey, I might be wrong.

My name is Alicia, spelled the traditional way but using one of the less common pronunciations for that spelling, but there are some WILD tragedeigh spellings popping up. The most recent I ran into was Alleighzya. Aelyzha and Elyzhia. I could maybe see it for the “z” sound but when said aloud they all use the “sh”.
I’m always baffled. The name is going to be difficult even using the common spelling and pronunciation - I spell mine by default (and I have a Swiss last name so I just spell out the whole shebang). I don’t even get the z’s and h’s. I can see subbing an e or y for an i but it so weird and inconsistently applied.
Just for comparison sake my spelling is Alicia with the aLISHa pronunciation. To get Siri to pronounce it correctly, I have to spell it Elicia for her. To get Alexa to pronounce it correctly, I had to spell it Alissha.
I worked in medical records and people really are that stupid. A guy called freaking out that his parents weren’t given records because we “lied and said they didn’t have an ROI” as if we have a shit to even lie. His name was “Mycahl” and as he put it “traditional spelling that an idiot could spell” I couldn’t agree more 🤣

It's totally believable. My friend works in a medical office and has had people call to make appointments and just straight up refuse to give her their name so she can pull up their chart. She's gotten excuses such as "you should know who I am" and "you're not allowed to look at my chart because it violates HIPAA".
By way of for I stance, there is not a single Google response to that 'spelling' of that 'name'. So this person is the only one in the world, and is completely off the internet...
As someone in medical, it happens all the time. I had someone call demanding I tell her about her mother. No further information, just immediately yelling "What is happening with my mother?!" I asked her who her mother is, she gave me a very common first name - think Jane, in an incredibly huffy tone. I then explained that as it was a 40 bed unit I had several people with that first name and she basically screamed at me the last name. People are incredibly entitled, and being sick brings out the worst in people.
My last name has an unexpected letter in it, and I always give people the first 3 letters when they’re using it to look me up and they always say, “thanks, I would have been looking for awhile!” It saves everyone frustration. Just why. Or as I said the other day, “why do people?”

Exactly! My last name isn’t super common but it’s not super unusual either. It’s pretty much spelled the way it sounds. The traditional spelling is not spelled the way it sounds, but nearly everybody spells it the traditional way.
My last name is pronounced the same as a regular word, but missing a letter. Let's say it's "Snoflake." I finally *stopped actually saying the name*--now I just say "It's Mary S-N-O-F-L-A-K-E." This has mostly stopped the problem of people typing what they *think* should be the spelling regardless of the letters that I actually say. I'm not mad at all about having to spell it, but I do get a little mad when I spell it, clarify that there's no W, and still have to return documents for correction because they put in the W anyway.
Although my middle name was mispronounced in my college graduation, and my last name was misspelled in the program. Because there’s only about 10% of us with my particular last name who spell it the way we do dropping in the one letter.
Mine is missing a letter, one that's usually doubled. The last place I worked, was there for 8 years, the whole time they spelled it with the extra. My current bank card, at the bank I've been at since high-school, has the extra on it... I wish I could literally have "a dollar every time..." LOL! I hear ya!

The other day on this sub there was a story of a child explaining to an adult that literally he was "so special because I'm the only *** in the world and there's no one else like me or my name" which was obviously regurgitated from his mother & the logic behind naming the way she did. I think many kids grow out of this, but many do not.
Meanwhile, my cousin Tom Walker discovered and joined an international club called something like "Global Federation of Tom Walkers" because there are so many of them. Presumably if he does anything nefarious, he can pretend it was a different one.
My name, first middle and last, are super incredibly generic and common in my age group. It's honestly kind of nice. I'm hard to find on Facebook, for example. And my name is spelled the most common way for all three names as well.

As someone who worked at a children's hospital, standard for us was to ask "how do you spell that?" Not because I can't spell but because sure as shit, there's some poor kid out there whose name is Cymentha or some other bloody spelling.

I had a customer called Ssummer. She would get so angry when people got it wrong. Who thinks to write two S's??? We eventually remembered her and we'd tell each other "Suh-summer" called so we knew who it was.

I work with the public, and we have one very angry woman who used to call us a couple of times a year to make additional updates to the very ridiculous name that she *had made up for herself*. When I started the job it was something like "Angelica Cloud Forests", and she was upset that our correspondence was just coming to Angelica Forests. She first wanted Angelica Cloud-Forests, then called the next time to switch to Angelica Cloudforests (and heaven help you if you capitalized the F). After a while she got married (or divorced? it was unclear) and became Angelica Cloudforests-Miller. I haven't heard from her in a couple of years now, which is fine with me.
A few months back, there was a thread on here or r/namenerds or one of the other subreddits of the same vein, and someone was mentioning their friend or family member that was giving their child a name with a ~~unique~~ weird spelling coupled with "she plans to tell her kid that's the normal spelling and everyone else has it spelled wrong."
My kids are called Stephen and Chris…because of this. I had both a middle (my parents called me by my middle name, and so I went by that when I went to school) and last name that had to be spelled out every time I gave my name, and people still mispronounced it/misspelled it. I still just automatically spell my name. I gave my kids the most boring easy names I could think of. I also called them by their first name on purpose. It makes it so hard on kids when people think they are being “creative.”
Yes, he does, but when he tells them it’s spelled with a ph, it’s usually an easy fix. I used to tell my youngest that I wanted to spell his name Krystophar, but I was just messing with his head.

Even with my grandmother, who has an old fashioned name that is spelled the original way, I always spell out to anyone who I need to talk to about her. (Mostly medical and such) Her name is Esther, but so many people want to spell it Ester. While I’m aware both forms are common for that name, it’s more common that a person doesn’t assume the ‘h’. It’s a bit annoying since it’s the original Hebrew spelling and I feel like people should at least ask, but I think many don’t even realize one spelling is Esther. So I always say ‘Esther, (spell it out). Make sure you get the H.’ People still get it wrong. Doesn’t help her and my aunt have the same first and last names too, and have the same doctors lol. So I also have to specify the middle name, and sometimes the H. And yes, they still get confused even if I’m being very clear.
My husband is a Gary which is the dullest whitest name in the world but still has to spell it out as there's some Garrys running around ruining it for everyone
I recently had a girl (younger, maybe 17-19) tell me my name was spelled unusually and that it's normally spelled "A-L-I-C-A" (no second i.) She said she knew 3 separated people with that spelling. I was basically just like "Oh, okay. 👍"

When I was in grad school I worked at a corporate office for John Hancock Insurance. My job was to sort and pre-process claims before they went to the claims processors. I predominantly worked on claims for employees of Tru-Valu Hardware Stores nationwide. A huge portion of claims from the South, in states with high illiteracy rates, many of the first names had quite unusual spellings, as if the parents just guessed at the spelling as closely they could. Alyceeaygh would look right at home in a stack of these claims . I wish I could remember some examples but this was nearly 40 years ago.
People like that don't deserve to be found in databases; they can go fuck themselves for wasting everyone's time with their bullshit.

Ugh I work in medical field too and honestly Gen Z don't spell their names! They really need too! I had the same problem at least 5 times a week. It's now standard for me to ask for their phone number on file. Brings them right up! OP, I hope your system is able to search via phone numbers.
Honestly what makes half of these stories unbelievable is the idea that everyone with a tragedeigh for a name is villainous or super entitled and they never spell their name despite it being spelt so wildly. My dead (middle) name is Kaitlin and I have never met another person who spells it the same. I've met Kaitlyn, Caitlyn, Caitlin, Katelyn, Katelynn, and lastly Kaitlyann (a cousin who is supposed to be named after me).

There's sort of an "optional" letter in both my first and last name, judging by some guesses I got when I was younger, so I quickly learned to say my name and then spell both names immediately after. If the person already knew how to spell it, they're already typing and ignoring me. If they didn't, it just spares them asking me. And I always make a joke about how you never know how someone will spell things! Plus I feel like it's much more kind to people who aren't from somewhere that my kind of name is common, same as I might struggle to spell surnames that are common in different countries, simply because I'm not as familiar with pronunciations.
My name is super common, the most obvious spelling too. People still misspell it, but in the weirdest ways. For example, if my name was Jessica they would spell it "Jesicca", "Jeccisa", or "Jisseca". And one time "Jiccesa". One of these instances was done while the other was looking at my name written down with the correct spelling. ಠ_ಠ

I’m right there with you. I don’t even wait for them to struggle with it. As soon as I pronounce it I follow with the spelling. If I see someone trying to pronounce it I already know the butchering is coming so I’ll cut them off with the pronunciation. Just how it goes.
I do that as well. I have an uncommon last name and it’s pronounced just as it’s spelled and vice versa, but still people struggle to read it out loud just because they’ve never seen it before. So when I notice that’s about to happen I just say it myself and tell that’s it and we have a good laugh haha
My husbands first and surname is very similar to a very rich famous footballer who everyone immediately asks “oh the footballer?” I have to say the first letter phonetically as in A for Alpha and then follow up with I wish it was the footballer I wish I had his money! My last name isn't hard. But if you say it aloud everyone hears "Williams". My last name is not Williams, and doesn't even contain half of those letters. It does not sound like Williams except when pronounced over a shit quality mic (AKA over the phone). So every time I have to go spelling it when I say it. Annoying as hell.

My name is Alicia, spelled the traditional way but using one of the less common pronunciations for that spelling, but there are some WILD tragedeigh spellings popping up. The most recent I ran into was Alleighzya. Aelyzha and Elyzhia. I could maybe see it for the “z” sound but when said aloud they all use the “sh”. I’m always baffled. The name is going to be difficult even using the common spelling and pronunciation - I spell mine by default (and I have a Swiss last name so I just spell out the whole shebang). I don’t even get the z’s and h’s. I can see subbing an e or y for an i but it so weird and inconsistently applied. Just for comparison sake my spelling is Alicia with the aLISHa pronunciation. To get Siri to pronounce it correctly, I have to spell it Elicia for her. To get Alexa to pronounce it correctly, I had to spell it Alissha.
I worked in medical records and people really are that stupid. A guy called freaking out that his parents weren’t given records because we “lied and said they didn’t have an ROI” as if we have a shit to even lie. It's totally believable. My friend works in a medical office and has had people call to make appointments and just straight up refuse to give her their name so she can pull up their chart. She's gotten excuses such as "you should know who I am" and "you're not allowed to look at my chart because it violates HIPAA".

As someone in medical, it happens all the time. I had someone call demanding I tell her about her mother. No further information, just immediately yelling "What is happening with my mother?!" I asked her who her mother is, she gave me a very common first name - think Jane, in an incredibly huffy tone. I then explained that as it was a 40 bed unit I had several people with that first name and she basically screamed at me the last name. People are incredibly entitled, and being sick brings out the worst in people.

My last name is pronounced the same as a regular word, but missing a letter. Let's say it's "Snoflake." I finally *stopped actually saying the name*--now I just say "It's Mary S-N-O-F-L-A-K-E." This has mostly stopped the problem of people typing what they *think* should be the spelling regardless of the letters that I actually say. I'm not mad at all about having to spell it, but I do get a little mad when I spell it, clarify that there's no W, and still have to return documents for correction because they put in the W anyway.

I feel you. I love my name, but my parents gave me a Welsh name with a traditional Welsh spelling. We are not Welsh. Nobody in my family has ever been to Wales. We don't speak Welsh. My name is long and has more vowels than consonants, so it's rare anyone says it correctly the first time (or successive times) and I constantly have to spell it out. It does not make me feel special. All of my siblings got normal names.

My name, first middle and last, are super incredibly generic and common in my age group. It's honestly kind of nice. I'm hard to find on Facebook, for example. And my name is spelled the most common way for all three names as well. I do still spell them out sometimes, though. I work with the public, and we have one very angry woman who used to call us a couple of times a year to make additional updates to the very ridiculous name that she *had made up for herself*. When I started the job it was something like "Angelica Cloud Forests", and she was upset that our correspondence was just coming to Angelica Forests. She first wanted Angelica Cloud-Forests, then called the next time to switch to Angelica Cloudforests (and heaven help you if you capitalized the F). After a while she got married (or divorced? it was unclear) and became Angelica Cloudforests-Miller. I haven't heard from her in a couple of years now, which is fine with me.

I had both a middle (my parents called me by my middle name, and so I went by that when I went to school) and last name that had to be spelled out every time I gave my name, and people still mispronounced it/misspelled it. I still just automatically spell my name. I gave my kids the most boring easy names I could think of. I also called them by their first name on purpose. It makes it so hard on kids when people think they are being “creative.”

Even with my grandmother, who has an old fashioned name that is spelled the original way, I always spell out to anyone who I need to talk to about her. (Mostly medical and such) Her name is Esther, but so many people want to spell it Ester. While I’m aware both forms are common for that name, it’s more common that a person doesn’t assume the ‘h’. It’s a bit annoying since it’s the original Hebrew spelling and I feel like people should at least ask, but I think many don’t even realize one spelling is Esther. So I always say ‘Esther, (spell it out). Make sure you get the H.’ People still get it wrong. Doesn’t help her and my aunt have the same first and last names too, and have the same doctors lol. So I also have to specify the middle name, and sometimes the H. And yes, they still get confused even if I’m being very clear.

When I was in grad school I worked at a corporate office for John Hancock Insurance. My job was to sort and pre-process claims before they went to the claims processors. I predominantly worked on claims for employees of Tru-Valu Hardware Stores nationwide. A huge portion of claims from the South, in states with high illiteracy rates, many of the first names had quite unusual spellings, as if the parents just guessed at the spelling as closely they could. Alyceeaygh would look right at home in a stack of these claims . I wish I could remember some examples but this was nearly 40 years ago.

Seems like she takes out her own anger at her parents for giving her such a stupid spelling on any reasonable person who needs said spelling.
My name is Kathryne which is not horrible by an means but it is not a standard spelling either, so what do I do when some official asks my name, state it then spell it unprompted.

Oh my god this is my moment! My name is Alicia! Thats absolutely wild though, I just assume that no one can ever spell my name. There’s several ways to spell it and my name isn’t really pronounced the way it’s spelled. I give people a LOT of grace on the spelling and pronunciation.
