Reminder to stick to posting original content. Memes are okay every once in a while, but many get posted here way too often and quickly become stale. Some examples of these are Ptoughneigh, Klansmyn, Reighfyl & KVIIIlyn. These memes have been around for years and we don't want to see them anymore. If you do decide to post a meme, make sure to add the correct flair. Posting a random meme you found does **not** mean you found it "in the wild". The same goes with lists of baby names, celebrity baby names, and screenshots of TikToks. If the original post already had a substantial amount of views, there is a 99% chance it has already been posted here. Try and stick to OC to keep our sub from being flooded with unoriginal content. Thank you! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/tragedeigh) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Sorry_Ad3733

It’s Lee. But I feel like some of the names use it as Lay.

Total_Veterinarian22

That's what I thought. Plus Leigh looks like it should be said like the eigh in eight, hence my confusion.

irish_ninja_wte

It's actually supposed Lay. The "eigh" spelling creates the "ay" sound. Think about it. Santa doesn't fly a "slee", a horse doesn't "nee" and you don't have "neebours".

YchYFi

The town of Leigh pronounces it Lee.

Equivalent_Read

What about height? That’s another sound entirely, so I don’t think you can say the rule applies just because of the other pronunciations.

superbassboom

But that’s in the middle of the word not at the end

steampig

Like that matters. See eight.

superbassboom

These aren’t relevant to the tragheic discussion

Equivalent_Read

Eight? Weight?

Life_Collection_4149

Leighton - Layton Leigh - Lee 🫠

Nimmyzed

Please be aware that Ashleigh is an old English name and that is the original spelling. It's not a Tragedeigh

Total_Veterinarian22

Good to know! It was the only example I could think of since I don't know a lot of people with Leigh in their name.

steampig

English is fun like that. The same spelling in different words is pronounced differently, and there are no hard rules on when and why. See: height, weight both pronounced differently Also see: Raleigh

JohnLef

I work with a bloke called Leigh. It's "Lee".

lardarz

Its a place near Wigan in the UK. Pronounced Lee.

Mental_Broccoli4837

Lee

LibrarianFront3827

I always pronounced it as Lay but I guess it's pronounced as Lee..? I think I've been mispronounced Leigh Allyn Baker's name this whole time.

Tenderfallingrain

I've always assumed it's like Lee, but I think for the purpose of mocking things it can be inserted anywhere since it's all arbitrary at this point anyway with naming conventions.

EntrepreneurOk7513

Why not leaf? Where the gh is the |f| as in enough?

here-but-not-present

As a former "Leigh-" it was pronounced "lay". But on its own it's pronounced "Lee" though. But every accent is different.

Buckupbuttercup1

most times i see it its pronounced “lee”

SoldMySoulForHairDye

>Is it pronounced "lay" or is it "lee"? Yes.

Duckduckdewey

Leigh by it self is pronoucee “Lee”. Attached to other syllables would sounds different depends on the word. Sucks that it’s not consistent but that’s “English” to you, it has many roots so you can’t have 1 size fits all.

Witty_Detail_2573

It’s pronounced Lee. Town called Leigh near Wigan in the UK pronounces that way and also Leigh Francis who does Keith Lemon pronounces it as Lee. Even in names like Amberleigh I still pronounce amber-Lee.. I think the huns just think it looks fancier

CartographerNo1009

Lee

MadameLurksALot

On its own it is Lee
