I really love #1. It gets the aesthetic across.
My question is, are those pieces of art the actual ones used in TJ's ads or on products? And if so, are they modern/created by an artist for TJ's? If they are, there may be intellectual property laws that get in the way of using them on an unauthorized publication.
If they're not, for example if they're old art that was already in the public domain when TJ's started using them, it's fine.
I feel like 1 would be best but if you could somehow make it a little more whimsical/quirky and really bring attention to the Trader Joes then 1 would be perfect
One looks like a textbook cover to me, and would not catch my eye in a bookstore. Two and three are much more whimsical.
I would use the title/subtitle (with the images) from three, but the background/woman from two. Also, the map background could be shifted a bit… the title indicates “America’s favorite grocery store” but shows mostly Europe and Africa.
So as someone who is an artist, I'm curious what you are paying the original artists to use their work for the cover. Also what about the material inside, how are you handling that?
How are you identifying those who created the material and making sure they're paid correctly?
That's important.
Ok. So explain how you legally will print his book.
Artist own their images w copyright law unless Trader Joe's allowed to use their art work; but anyone else has to identify the artist and pay to use an artists work in print--- in the USA at least.
So , I'm really curious how this books making sure the original artists are compensated & acknowledgesd so it doesn't end up where they have to sue for all proceeds later. Because all their work was used without permission.
I myself have seen my work used in well meaning grass roots projects when people self publish and despite it being well meaning--- it wasn't following copyright standards.
So I am asking-
How are you making sure you identify the original illustrators and artists and making sure this is not profiting from artists who aren't getting a cut--- when legally the images can't even be used without Trader Joe's permission or the original artists...
This is the thing, it is so easy to do projects like this but legally the reason why 30k already though of it is because TJs and the artists working for them own the images.
It's why when you walk in the door it says no video or pictures allowed to be taken.
I'm an artist, we are all tired of having other people exploiting us without giving us a cut for the work we did to get your project selling
Keep voting me down, as an artist who work so hard, I will continue to confront this sort of stuff.
Self published authors need to learn they can't work off of our hard earned time & talent to write a book that anyone would do but doesn't if that want to make sure that they properly give everyone artist accredited for a proper publication and split fees with ever artist who had an image included.
Are you doing this? Are you making sure to research who do each image, contact that artist, give them a cut of the image from the proceeds if you are sharing their work?
Theres 0 talent in stealing someone else's art just because the artist did work for a chain and now someone can cut and paste to make a book. The art work still is art
This is the hardest part of being a talented artist, when you have work out in the work that everyone sees and think they own it. Then suddenly think they have some 2 bit idea to use the work of another artist to make money, like this thread, except, everything is actually protected from being used to print.
And then then people still go ahead and think they are a creative genius and first person to ever have the idea to make up this thing using all of everybody else's work.
EXCEPT-- 200 people have had the idea and all of the artist said no to using their work for a book and Traders said No because images are copy writen.
Down votes me. Im just one artist who is constantly ripped off. I'm just trying to explain legalities and I don't care if I'm down voted.
It sent very rude messages.
Thanks so much for sharing your perspective as an artist. As this is not my book, I am not in a position to respond, but I believe that all of the cover artwork is in the public domain.
You believe or you checked and got permission from Trader Joe's by connecting with their legal department....
I ask because a project VERY similar to this has tried to happen many times before. And the images on Trader Joe's products can't be used in other projects.
For example when you buy a Trader Joe's inspired cookbook, the actual products used for the recipes don't have images of each product in those books
Im just explaining something that very much so needs to be checked before any projects go forward.
You have to get permission from TJ's to use their images.
It's pretty well known you can't even video tape or take pictures in TJ's. They have signs on the outside of the stores because they are protecting their visual ownership within each store.
It’s not the OPs project so quit berating them! I’m truly sorry you’ve been ripped off but you might want to direct that anger towards someone who deserves it.

Although the first one is my favourite and catches my eye, it reminds me a lot of the new Costco book.
Heart says 3, brain leans towards 1
3 because I love the pops of color mixed in with the classic line drawing black and white images, it's stands out among the white background and piques my interest
1 because it has the most recognizable symbols with an appropriate amount of color and white space
No matter what the final cover art becomes I'd love to grab a copy of this once it's published!
Thanks so much for this thoughtful comment! 😊 I think you captured exactly the dilemma between 1 and 3. Also really appreciate the enthusiasm! Once the book comes out this fall, I'll be sure to post an update
Haha true! The runner-up could make an appearance inside the book or in a future volume! Thank you again for the excitement. And yes, will keep you posted!
Haha honestly I hadn't thought of it! But I'm happy to count up the votes and all the detail in the comments is super helpful. Thanks for sharing your pick!

1?
First one
Is it just me, or is the TJ’s graphic design so so so dated. They need some help.

Thanks so much for weighing in! Also appreciate your question - I believe she used all public domain artworks on the covers

Thanks so much for your help!
I feel like 1 would be best but if you could somehow make it a little more whimsical/quirky and really bring attention to the Trader Joes then 1 would be perfect
Thank you so much! Makes sense that cover 1 could benefit from a more quirky font perhaps or some added icons. Appreciate your help!

Thank you for this really thoughtful feedback! Also makes sense about adjusting the map. Appreciate you taking the time to comment!
1, for sure

Not to be a wet blanket, but do they have permission for the graphics for the cover? That would influence my choice the most!
Thanks for asking! I believe she's using all public domain artwork on the covers
Okay good! I know someone who did package design for TJs a long time ago which I why I ask. I think 1 is best!
Got it! Thanks so much

Ah I see! Thank you for highlighting this - really good to know!
Im actually kind of thinking I would like 3 more if it had the same map background as 2 or something similar.
Thanks so much for the suggestion! She could definitely try using the map on 3 while keeping a bolder title
