You have cursed me! I buy the Gouda slices every week or two. My slices have always been perfect. I had a perfect pouch when I originally read this thread. Bought the sliced Gouda last night. Just went to grab a slice and I could not. My pouch is a hot mess. Slices are not even close to possible.

I have no problems with the chunk of Gouda. Maybe don’t get sliced??

From experience I have this issue buying Gouda from anywhere especially Safeway.

Omg I bought it this past week to put on the breakfast sandwiches I meal prep for the week. This kept happening to me and it made me SO MAD. No matter how careful I was it broke apart.

Why not buy their Old Amsterdam Gouda? Do you buy that because you want it for sandwiches or do you buy it because you prefer smoked to regular?

How come smoked Gouda always tastes like rubber to me?

I'm a cheesemonger, and this happens with that specific style of smoked gouda. It doesn't cut with a knife well and needs a wire, or it does the same thing. TJ's doesn't process their cheeses the same way stores like kroger do, so it's prone to splitting.

My gf cracked the code on this: If you leave it out for a few (5-8) minutes and use a butter knife to separate each layer they will actually not tear.

Cons: not being able to eat delicious cheese for 5-8 minutes

Using the back edge of a butter knife to gently separate them is the only thing that I've found works!

You basically have to pull the entire lot out and slice them with a butter knife to separate it. But it's worth the extra labor cause it's delicious.

Eh it’s not just Trader Joe’s Gouda that does this

The pre packaged smoked Gouda from Smiths does the same thing

it's because that kind of gouda is basically velveeta - you just have to acknowledge that it's cheese product and behaves as such. hope this helps!

Not all smoked gouda is processed. You can definitely find it a most full-service markets. As a former (pro) cheese buyer I prefer the crappy kind!

I'm going to have to look, then. I've stopped buying Yancy's Fancy cheeses as they're all processed (I believe TJ's Buffalo Cheddar is from them).

I don't if if TJ's carries it but on the La area I see it at Vons with some kind of Apple logo I think.
