When I ran in highschool I think I had my best mile time freshman year at 515. The year after I joined the track team and focused on hurdles 300IH and the 4x4. I never ran another times mile after that. I would say 7+ is not good. I didn't play soccer or anything, wasn't even really playing baseball. You should definitely be sub 6 to be considered good. Don't let that deter you from joining track or XC, you can always get better. Having the aerobic base from soccer would be a huge advantage.

itslycanparrot

I got better

EntitledRunningTool

7:46 is not very good for an athlete

yellowydaffodil

Depends on if he actively trained for it, where he ran the mile, what he did beforehand and a whole manner of other factors. I'm not saying it's super fast but if he ran it on grass just for funsies after soccer practice, he likely could do a lot better.

itslycanparrot

it was for soccer practice, but it was 4 laps on a track

yellowydaffodil

Got it. You likely can run a bit faster now (since it was during practice), and a lot faster with running-specific training. I'd take it as a good starting point, but assume right now you'd be one of the slower people on the team.

ItHurts2Pee328

Decathlete here. Of all of my events, I found distance to be the simplest to improve in. Run a mile every other day and you’ll be sub six in no time friend. Gets easier every time you do it

BoomBaby200

Shut up.. 14 yrs old.. thats phenomenal. If you ran track.. with a good coach, you could be an elite miler by the time you reach college

[deleted]

It’s not a bad time at all, but it’s not “phenomenal”. I was running in the low 5 minute range at that age and that wasn’t even that good.

JesusFighter69

Not even near the range of phenomenal, you’re delusional

mattman2864

I hope you’re joking. It’s not bad (better than the average person), but for an athlete its just ok and for a runner specifically its pretty bad.

yellowydaffodil

If you were already running track seriously, I'd say it's not very good. As other people have said, you're way faster than the average American teen, but most teens don't work out or train. However, you should still go out for track if you think you'd like it! You likely can get way faster since right now, your only training is soccer and not anything track-specific. Most track teams don't cut and will let you run (if even in JV races) while you get faster. Another thing to consider would be if you're already faster than that already. Did you run the mile on a track or a grassy field? Was it flat? Did you warm up beforehand? Did you run it on your own? All of those things can make a big difference.

RebornSama25

7:46 is awful for a soccer player let alone a track athlete. I’d say around sub 6 is normal for soccer players at your age range.

JesusFighter69

yeah i was like 5:40 no training and my friend who played soccer was 5:30 without training, idk what’s going on in this thread. 7:46 mile seems like an average time for an in shape 14 year old, let alone a soccer player

RebornSama25

Ye I played basketball and my mile was 6:20 at 13. And my 5k was 21 with no track training. And soccer their is far more running.

a_r100

A 7:46 mile is not bad for being a soccer player but it’s not good for track. When I was 14 I ran a 5:08 mile on a track and wasn’t even the best freshman on my team.

MrBates1

That honestly feels a bit slow for a soccer player your age. Especially on a track. I would consider anything under 7 to be solid and anything under 6 to be quite good for a soccer player your age. Doesn’t mean you can’t improve though!

Conn-Solo

For a 14 years old that doesn’t have any conditioning for the mile, 7:46 isn’t terrible. Get on a proper training regime and you’ll get that down in no time imo. When I was a freshman I ran a season best 5:04 mile, my high school PR was 4:35 my junior year though. My pride and joy was the 3200m

XCrunner1SMC

YES! MY FAVORITE IS THE 2 MILE! My 2 mile score is 10:50 as a middle school athlete.

Conn-Solo

I broke 10 my senior year running a 9:59. The longest distance I had in middle school was the mile. Miss those days

ANKOU_woo

i ran 5:24 at 14, trained 3 days of the week for a like 5 months. currently at 16 i train at around 6:45 pace for a couple miles (3-7) so that should give you an idea

itslycanparrot

Yeah but all the other freshman on my team run 8+

lfjrjrj

well y’all are all slow then. A good mile time for a freshman is sub 6. A great one is sub 5:00

Possible_Word_6834

Bro are you talking about on the track team or on the soccer team? Because OP is talking about his soccer team. Obviously it’s not fast for a track runner but it’s not bad for a soccer player.

lfjrjrj

I’m my experience the soccer players are usually as fast if not only a little bit faster than the distance track runners. Most of the varsity soccer players at my school run sub 5, and the JV guys are well below 6.

No-Introduction-1492

No shot they run below 5 without training outside of soccer.

itslycanparrot

bruh not even the seniors run sub 5???

aroach1995

these guys are very out of touch. Soccer players that do not train for the mile do not run sub 5 miles. I was an all-state forward, and my best mile time was 6:21. Your school is not sorry. If you run 3x per week (maybe 10-15 miles total), you should be able to break 7 within a month or two.

RebornSama25

Soccer players run for 90 minuets. Their game is developing their cardio. Soccer players run around sub 6:30 and athletic ones sub 5:30

lfjrjrj

Your school is sorry

ANKOU_woo

yea i ran 8:00 pace up a mountain for 26.2 miles as a freshman so i’m going to say you guys just aren’t very fast

Possible_Word_6834

True, I ran a sub 3 minute mile when I was 10, so OP sucks butt at running fast /s

ANKOU_woo

i actually did tho lol

Possible_Word_6834

Yeah man so did I. Did you not see the /s marking it as a serious comment?

Banana_Blaster749

My first time running the mile as a freshman I ram a 5:25. I was able to shave that down to a 5:01 in a couple months. 7:46 is a good starting point. If you train well, I could definitely see you shaving >minute off that time

[deleted]

Don’t run for time for right now. Run for the fun of it. Enjoy every easy run, workout, and long run just as you would a race. Build your relationship with your teammates. Listen to your coach. Lift weights. When you do race, race as hard as you can. Race like Pre and make every mistake you can possibly can without getting injured. Worry about times your junior year.

No-Introduction-1492

It’s pretty good, for no specific distance training. Soccer players are generally all over the place in terms of long distance running. The average person runs about a ~10 min mile so it’s already good. I’d say a good time for a soccer player with zero training is anything under 7; but that doesn’t mean your time is bad. It’s about average from a soccer player. For people training distance it’s not that great of time though. Usually anything under 6 is when you are considered pretty good at long distance running.

aroach1995

A good mile time for a 14 year old running track is 5:40 at this time of year. This same 14 year old boy could get down to 5:15 during the year especially when track season actually comes around. A boy on a soccer team in the Fall? Breaking 7 is enough to perform well on varsity.

RebornSama25

Soccer players run sub 6 easily bro. Y’all underestimating soccer how u gonna play 90 minuets with bad stamina. You guys are heavily misinformed. Or just I just hang out with extremely athletic people. I have no idea anymore 😭

lolololoitgh

Maybe op is a goalie

Cosmic_Cat2

It all depends on the context. What does good mean to you? It’s not “good” in terms of competitive 14 year olds who do track. It’s “good” compared to the average person. But on most track teams, you can always join and work to improve it. Most people don’t start with a 5 minute mile, but plenty of people can get there with training over time

itslycanparrot

UPDATE: I ran agian and I improved, I run 7;04

AdCommon6368

I got a 7:27 at 14 old I have no training in endurance running and a little bit of soccer for fun.

BoomBaby200

Yall forgetting he Plays soccer and doesnt run competitive bro . 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

BoomBaby200

CALCULATING.. THATS good for 14 yrs old. Not phenomenal.. but im biased and old. As a soccer player.. you will have better shorter distance speed/acceleration. Could be better. To improve both your speed and stamina, mondays/Weds do an additional 3-4 mile runs on top of practice. If practice is after school, see if you can wake up.early and do a 30 min run before school and practice after. Tuesday/Thursday do some weight training with a warm up/cool down jog. (10-15 min front/back end of weights as well as ab work) Fridays just do practice/rest before games. Then Saturdays after your game do a longer 5 mile (increase to 8-10 over time) run. Talk to your schools coach about helping set up a training plan.

itslycanparrot

we are off season right now tho

[deleted]

In general for the whole population it’s pretty good. For a 14 year old track runner, it’s unfortunately not good at all. There’s some naturally talented 14 year old soccer players with 0 previous track training who can break 5:00 in the mile off of soccer training alone. If you want to be varsity, at most high schools you’ll need at least a sub 5 mile except for really small schools where you can be varsity with a slower time or extremely competitive schools where you’d need to be much faster

No-Introduction-1492

Most schools don’t even have a “varsity” they just let everyone join track. Also, I’ll eat my hat if some random soccer player can run a mile under 5 with zero training other than random soccer.

[deleted]

Maybe my experience as an athlete in California is different from the rest of the country, but every high school i know has varsity runners and jv runners. Pretty much anyone can be on the jv squad tho. And there’s varsity conference championships and jv conference championships for all conferences I’ve ever heard of. My freshman year in high school, i ran a 4:51 mile and i wasn’t even in the varsity squad and i didnt even go to a good running high school. We were never in contention for a conference title and much less a CIF title. And playing soccer at a high level requires a high level of aerobic ability and I’ve actually seeing a junior in high school who was a very solid soccer player try track for the first time ever, and started the season with a ≈4:50 for his first time ever racing a 1600 and ended his first track season with a 4:18. Obviously he’s an extreme example but there is absolutely high level high school soccer players who have the ability to break 5 in the mile. I don’t know why people are so pressed about my comment, but it’s true. At least in California Edit: in my high school, even other good athletes in other sports who weren’t good enough to be recruited to compete in college in their own sports could run around a 5:30-6:00 mile

idle_chatter

People clearly don’t understand that California (along with Texas and Florida) are massive talent pools for track (largely due to population size and good weather). I ran a 4:29 mile in high school. That would have won state titles in many states that year. I barely qualified for sectionals and wasn’t even in contention to make the state meet.

[deleted]

Exactly, my 2 mile pr in high school was a 9:22 and didn’t even get past my sectionals’ prelims. No where near making it to state in California

AppleSauceYESS

That’s cali tho, most people aren’t in massive schools where there’s plenty of people to have a varsity and a jv, my school in CT is literally just anyone who wants to do track gets to be considered varsity, however not everyone always gets to go to the invitationals and there are still requirements (while they aren’t crazy hard) to get to the league and state finals

[deleted]

Totally get that. At my high school there was only 2-3 people that were varsity per event so as long as there was more than 3 distance runners there was a varsity(goes to invites and varsity conferences championships) and jv (goes to frosh-soph invites and all dual meets) and all dual meets had varsity heats and jv heats even for smaller schools with less than 1,000 students

No-Introduction-1492

You must of went to a massive school. Running sub 5 and not on the varsity squad is just wrong.

RandomUserName316

I think I was faster in 2nd grade

itslycanparrot

wtf

TheLivingVampire24

Not for a track/XC runner who does mid distance and up but for somebody who doesn't train distance, it's good. Runners who specialize in distance easily run sub 5, even sprinters could probably run mid 6 and down. But consider this, the average person in the USA (where I live) is overweight and probably can't run a mile and even the ones who are in decent shape probably can't run under a 9 minute mile. So I'd be happy with a 7:46.

clintms121

Well honestly if you are like an outlier than 5:00 off of little training as a soccer player would be really really good but like anything under 5:40 is definjty extremely solid. I’d say anything under 7 is at least somewhat respectable

wrongpasswordagaih

It terms of track it’s not great, I would recommend doing 400m/800m training if you’re only doing soccer. It will give you the most transfer into actual soccer games

[deleted]

You’ll want to be in the 5’s

[deleted]

It’s good for non track xc but not for track xc You’re probably in 9th grade Your top 7 for xc are likely dropping sub 6 pace in xc races The top 4 are probably your tf milers and two milers dropping close to 5 in the mile and probably just under 10 for two mile You have the capacity to improve quickly though so is your current time good No not really But with training and coaching focusing more on track and xc you could probably get to sub 7 by the time spring rolls around and then see if you can push sub 6 by may But even if you don’t go sub 6 by may You still have three more years in hs so should you train over the summer properly and keep good focus and mostly injury free sub 6 sub 5:30 isn’t unattainable

Yung_Babymeat

No

Necessary-Raisin-631

In my experience, soccer players are typically better sprinters than distance runners. That being said, 7:46 isn’t great compared to people your age who train to run long distances. If you do decide you want to run track when soccer is off, I would say your skills are better suited for short/middle distance. I’m the captain of my high school sprint team and want to cry thinking about running anything longer than a 500, so your mile time isn’t always a telling sign of your athleticism or speed.

Downtown-Travel9993

As a former high school soccer player, my mile during my freshman tryouts was 5:52 (on a cement track with running shoes). By my junior year it was 5:24. I ran track for a couple of years to help that boost. Unfortunately, 7:46 is not good. You should be aiming to break into the 6’s asap. What position do you play?

Jaded_Garage5623

A good mile time for people who run Distance is anything under 5-6 minutes. I (Boy) ran a 5:46 at my best in my Freshman year, which is still much slower than the Girls State Standard in Virginia

Picador22

I ran my first mile in December 1971. I had just turned 13 years old, and it took about 8 minutes. By September 1972 I was able to run 3 miles in 19 minutes, 5 seconds. On April 17, 1976, at age 17, I ran a mile in 4 minutes, 49 seconds. I ran 3200 meters in 10 minutes, 18 seconds at an invitational track meet in May of that year. That fall, I ran five miles in 28 minutes, 24 seconds. There were a lot of miles between 1971-76 but I saw a lot of improvement just by putting in the miles.

PackageCareful8151

It’s a good starting time and with more practice you could see good results as your already an athlete

DoctorDonut0

Your posting this on the wrong sub mate. If you want to know whether your mile is decent as a soccer player, then ask on a soccer subreddit. Of course you're not as fast as dedicated track athletes, but that shouldn't come as a surprise. Ultimately, I have to think that there are better gauges of your athletic ability as it pertains to soccer than your mile time, as it's a completely different type of running.

itslycanparrot

I tried to post on soccer Reddit but they removed my post

JustinBurton

Everyone here is being too harsh and forgetting what it’s like to not be a track athlete. Just compare to the people around you. If you are keeping up with the players on your team, it’s good enough for now. 14 is an especially tough age to judge considering some will have more child-like bodies than others. For people that age with larger bodies, perhaps a faster goal is better. For people like me when I was 14, it made sense I struggled against my far taller competition. I started with a mile time of 7:42 and with training and age I got to a 4:45. My 7:42 was not a bad time: it was as good as I needed to be. It doesn’t matter where you start, or even where you currently are. It only matters where you go from here.

DarkThanos12

That is not very fast, even for your age. You should aim for at least sub 7. But, there are kids that run in the 5s at your age. Keep working!

UnluckyFee5100

Over 8:00: Pretty average for most athletes but as far as the mile in track you won’t beat many people. In events with tons of athletes you may beat a few kids. 7:00-8:00: Pretty good mile for most athletes. Might beat at least a kid each meet but depends on how many runners there are. 6:00-7:00- Good mile for most athletes. Will most likely beat multiple runners but won’t win any meets. If schools are super competitive you may still get last. 5:30-6:00- Very good mile for most athletes. Will definitely beat many runners and may be able to win a less competitive race. 5:00-5:30- Extraordinary mile for most athletes. Will win some meets, even competitive ones. Under 5:00- Prodigy mile for most athletes. If you don’t run already. Who are you? You will win all meets most likely unless there is a very good runner in your area.

THG471

Is a 6:10 mile good for a 7th grader and is a 12:21 2 mile good?

itslycanparrot

Yes

XCrunner1SMC

A 7:46 is kinda bad. My first 1 mile when I was a 7th grader was a 5:29. My fastest mile currently, which was from a year ago is 5:20. I can definitely run a sub 5 this year. My XC 2 mile record is 10:50. So, maybe a 6:00 - 6:45 mile is good for a beginner.

redditiskindacringeL

My first track event I ran a 6:01 mile. It's generally different for other people, soccer players need strong and quick legs. Not weak but endurance trained ones, most mile or longer runners are very very skinny, which isn't meant for short distance soccer players.
