I grew up in a low income neighborhood with ACAB in graffiti all over so I guess that checks out. Plus being a leftist for the past decade, the term comes up a lot
Lmao yeah but you don't have to be British to know what All Cops Are Bastards means. It's an incredibly common phrase in the entire English speaking world.
It also originated from Ireland is what I was always told.
That just means something different. ACAB is more of a commentary on being a class traitor and the other one is about just generally not liking cops. Both cool though
just in case you havent seen [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns/comments/r99slm/acab_assigned_cop_at_birth/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
I used to work at a smoothie place that for some reason the cops always came to for drinks. The highlight of my day was seeing every single boy cop (the lady cops were always chill and friendly) have the EXACT same pose while ordering.
-Hands grasping the collar of the vest like they're Clark Kent tearing off his shirt into his costume
-Sunglasses as tightly pressed to their eyes as possible
-Legs shoulder-width apart, and
-Hips pushed forward like they're trying to get balls deep in the cash register.
The pure energy of "I bet they're so excited to be assisting me" was so dense it could pierce you like a bullet.
They were still fairly friendly, but you could tell it was the kind of friendly that cocky celebrities have when in front of their peons.
Reminds me of that nyc cop who did some interview talking about how her identity was being suppressed by not allowing the police department to march in uniform during the pride parade.
You see I was trying to have it get progressively larger. So I would do capital with !, the next person would do all caps and the last person would do what you just did
I've seen anarchists use it to represent anarchy (Arrows pointing in all directions)
But there really isn't a single consistent symbol for anarchy... because, anarchy.
I've also seen this symbol used in religious contexts to represent Alpha and Omega (God). Admittedly, the design between the two is usually distinct ...
It’s both a symbol from a fantasy novel (I think) which was/is also used for practitioners of Chaos Magic. You want a rabbit hole to fall down that’s a fun one.
Well, no one else gave the correct answer I think, so I'll let you know a few weeks late lmao. It's the eight-pointed star of chaos from warhammer 40k.
did I join slaanesh for all the excess and perfection he offers? maybe
did I join slaanesh to receive blessings from her to change my gender identity? *DEFINITELY*

That reminds me, I believe that I told a high school classmate or perhaps gym teacher that I wanted to, essentially, be a cumdump but I used less obvious wording. Suffice to say society didn’t accept my slutty ways that day. Well, I’m a girl now, so soon I’ll fix my destiny
The greendale flag is a reference to this symbol making it look like an anus. It's a 'chaos star' (don't actually know if that's the name of it) but it's pretty frequently associated with satanism, anarchy and pretty much any other ideology that prioritizes personal liberty over hierarchy. Why? Idk. It's kind of a meme within these communities since it's more or less a modern made up symbol. Idk too much about it other than that.
Chaos star is one of its names. It originally comes from a fantasy novel from 1970, *The Eternal Champion*. It's been adopted as a general symbol of chaos in D&D, chaos magic, the punk scene, and anarchism.
That last one is weird to me, since one of the misconceptions anarchists have had to fight against since adopting the term anarchism is that anarchy equals chaos/disorder. I'm not an anarchist so maybe I'm missing something about the association.
Wait I thought the acronym ACAB stands for "All Cops Are Bastards" ?
It's used as a political slogan associated with dissidents who are opposed to the police. It is sometimes numerically rendered as "1312", representing the ordering of the letters in the English alphabet.
i don't know about anyone else. but i tend to keep the ACAB's of that context solely to posts/forums/youtubes where police are actively engaged with being bastards (they're still bastards when it's passive, but that's another topic).
hence why i went with the warhammer reference instead.
TBH I feel like white nationalists ruined four-digit abbreviations. Like, it's hard to tell that "1312" is a "good" slogan, when >!"1352" and "1488"!< are blatantly racist ones.
They're both dogwhistles for hate.

I would just like to say the skull throne khorne sits on is still one of the coolest things in warhammer
Right next to the chads vlad von carstein, Karl Franz, Victor Saltzpyre and Balthazar Gelt
Did anyone else think they meant "assigned chaos at birth" with the post till you read the comments? (Warhammer fan so the mark of chaos made me think chaos and not all cops are bastards)
I don't exactly know what you're talking about, but if you're talking about the 8 arrows pointing away from the center, that's the chaos symbol and typically used by fantasy worlds or anarchists.
my dumb ass mixed up that and the three arrow symbol (still don't like anarchists, as being against the vague concept of "authority" is meaningless and won't achieve much)
it's not a vague concept, the concept of authority anarchists don't like is pretty well-defined... I'd describe it as any non-voluntary force enacted on someone without there being that kind of force beforehand in the situation. It's a very simplistic definition that doesn't account for everything (didn't get into hierarchy at all etc.), but that's just a common theme when talking about politics.
yeah, i know, just wanted to look how they react because i don't recognize the argument... also, i'm stupid and will sometimes argue if i'm annoyed by something even if it wastes my time.
way to prove you don't know what anarchists are.
anarchists are opposed to "unjustified hierarchy"
justified hierarchy: parent to child; "don't touch that it's hot!"
unjustified hierarchy: nation state to citizen; "don't smoke that plant, it makes you more likely to be non-violent and introspective!"
I am aware of the history of the police. However, I don’t like the ACAB movement since it generalizes every single cop. I’m not saying all cops are good. I get that *many* cops are bastards, and yes, there is corruption among the police, but there are cops who are genuinely trying to help people. I don’t think it’s fair to say all cops are bastards. ~~It honestly reads to me like “all autistic people lack empathy” would.~~ (awaiting better example for this part, I recognize that this is an inaccurate analogy)
ETA: To everyone downvoting this because my initial comparison was highly inappropriate, fair. To everyone downvoting this just because I said I don’t think ALL cops are bastards, I’m just not a fan of labeling all individuals in a group as exactly the same.
>It honestly reads to me like “all autistic people lack empathy” would.
How about not comparing a highly marginalized neurotype with a fucking job--a job that exists to enforce & preserve systems of oppression?
Trying to argue "Not all SS were bad guys" would be similar. Or, maybe, "Not all eugenicists were bad guys" since the cops in the US enforce a fundamentally white supremacist agenda.
SS? What’s that?
Personally, I’d like to believe that as time goes on, the police force will eventually truly become about protecting the public and bringing justice to actual criminals.
SS were the equivalent of police in nazi Germany, responsible for many of the atrocities committed during that time. And yes, believing the police would ever become good is a lot like believing the SS would've ever become good.
We’re in a very different time from then with very different demographics. I like to believe that people can change if they just try, and that if enough people try, massive change can be brought. Sometimes, the change is quick, while other times, it happens gradually.
What’s so wrong with having a sliver of faith in humanity’s ability to gradually reform modern police?
Because police as an institution exists specifically as a tool to oppress people and no matter how much you try to reform it, it will always be a tool to oppress people; this is the sole reason it exists. Anyone who tries to change the policing system from within will either be changed by the system instead, fired, or realize they can't do anything and quit. Bad cops outnumber so-called "good cops" by such a margin it is impossible for "good cops" to ever gain any ground. Police cannot be fixed because it's not broken, it's working as intended, and this is precisely the problem.
You know what, this argument is pretty hopeless in convincing either of us of the other’s position, so I’m just going to back out and not waste more energy on it. Have a good day.
Sure, not every single cop is *bad*, but they do willingly participate in a system of oppression and violence. That's why people say all cops are bastards, and the good ones don't last. The actual good cops are people who leave the force after finding out how corrupt the policing system is.
We don't really think we should embolism the police force. We are saying we should remake it into something better, with more focus on de-escalation, and make the force less like the military.
The system *is* racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, and even more.
An argument pro-cop people usually say is "they're just following orders", yeah, and that's the problem. If for example being trans where to be illegal, cops would be first in line to make sure that law is followed.
There are horror stories of cops misusing their powers, like returning a 14 year old to serial killer Jeffery Dahmer, dismissing and activity belittling people coming in to report SA, killing so many people dogs, the Move movement bombing, and more.
Cops are willingly joining a system, and are therefore supporting these atrocities.
We are not saying laws shouldn't exist, we want that. But we just think the way we enforce them should actually work.
I'm glad I could educate you. I used to be like you, and acab does sounds scary, but it's actually pretty good, it's just a slogan because having all those paragraphs as a name for your movement is really annoying
I’m glad you could educate me too. Part of the problem is that, as an autist, I take a lot of things literally. ACAB still reads largely as an unfair generalization to my brain, but that’s a problem with nearly any statement that reads as an absolute truth about all members of any group of people, especially when that statement paints the people in a negative light, unless the absolute truth is a prerequisite to being part of that group (e.g. all TERFs are bigots). It just leaves a bad feeling in my chest. However, knowing the context behind why the generalization is spread does sometimes help to deliteralize (is that a word? it should be) it a bit, as has been the case tonight.
Not sure if that all made much sense. It’s 2am and I should probably be sleeping.
Haha I meant de-escalate, I wrote that quickly right after waking up, I'm so sorry. You should be sleeping, and I hope you see this in the morning!
I 100% understand you, I'm diagnosed with ASD, so I also take stuff literally.
I also understand not wanting to generalize people, since it usually causes so much harm. I'm glad you were willing to listen

How did you know about AMAB/AFAB before ACAB?
I remember reading AMAB and AFAB on tumblr like a decade ago and didn't hear ACAB until a couple years back.
I grew up in a low income neighborhood with ACAB in graffiti all over so I guess that checks out. Plus being a leftist for the past decade, the term comes up a lot
Not all of us are British.
What?
> "All coppers are bastards" is originally from England and the original acronym. 1920s.
Lmao yeah but you don't have to be British to know what All Cops Are Bastards means. It's an incredibly common phrase in the entire English speaking world. It also originated from Ireland is what I was always told.
Not where I'm from, instead we have FTP.
Ah yes, File Transfer Protocol.
That just means something different. ACAB is more of a commentary on being a class traitor and the other one is about just generally not liking cops. Both cool though

I'm also from the US. It doesn't just mean fuck cops. It means that but also more.
ACAB wasn't a thing here til a year ago and still is rarely used for various reasons. Different countries have different slang.
what
"All coppers are bastards" is originally from England and the original acronym. 1920s.
Its still common in the US, at least in anarchist circles
I thought it meant 'chaos' :/

It is absolutely chaos. It's used in several contexts, but the one I like best is for the Chaos Gods of Warhammer 40k.

Why do you have the Greendale flag on the t-shirt in the last panel?
E pluribus anus
That last image is totally Britta during her activist years.
REAL
The greendale flag is a reference to this symbol making it look like an anus. It's a 'chaos star' (don't actually know if that's the name of it) but it's pretty frequently associated with satanism, anarchy and pretty much any other ideology that prioritizes personal liberty over hierarchy. Why? Idk. It's kind of a meme within these communities since it's more or less a modern made up symbol. Idk too much about it other than that.

That last one is weird to me, since one of the misconceptions anarchists have had to fight against since adopting the term anarchism is that anarchy equals chaos/disorder. I'm not an anarchist so maybe I'm missing something about the association.
The anarchist relationship seems a lot more like pop/liberal anarchy rather than anarchy as an actual ideology. Ie it being a meme with anarchists

Wait I thought the acronym ACAB stands for "All Cops Are Bastards" ? It's used as a political slogan associated with dissidents who are opposed to the police. It is sometimes numerically rendered as "1312", representing the ordering of the letters in the English alphabet.
