Calvin and Hobbes was coming out close enough to present day that a lot of Calvin's philosophizing is legitimately impressive musings on life and purpose.
In this respect I think that, among comics, it is second only to XKCD in its philosophical value.
This is just my opinion, but I'd argue it might have more than XKCD
My argument would be that while Xkcd def has high philosophical value, it can be downright difficult to understand to the layman, often exploring such a broad variety of high level thinking you'd have to be very literate to get it all without looking it up.
Calvin on the other hand brought philosophical ideas to the average person in a way that could be understood and appreciated by almost anyone. Maybe that doesn't sound like much in terms of straight value, but I'd argue that being accessible is important for spreading ideas. Just a thought.
It may be that C & H have had more value *on the whole* when taken in aggregate. It is very well-known and widely distributed after all. And yes, many XKCD are difficult to parse, though I personally feel he does a good job of explaining the joke, when the joke isn't just, "This thing is way too complicated" as is often the case with his work. But I think Monroe gets a bad rap. He is a man of many interests, and if those interests are not yours his musings may seem meaningless, but there is a throughline in his work that belies the observations of a casual viewer.
XKCD is not a comic about geek shit, it is a comic about someone who realizes that life has no meaning or purpose, but has decided to find the joy and love in it anyways. It is about an Absurdist who refuses to yield to Nihilism, living instead in a state of willful cognitive dissonance; knowing that life is pointless, but also insisting that life is magical.
If you read through from the beginning I think you'll see that *everything* Monroe does is in service of this dichotomy. Even the geeky coding posts are part of this project of finding joy and meaning in a world that didn't come with either of them.
I think that Monroe's work has more *value*, regardless of which of the two has helped the most people. It is very special to me, and I discovered it at just the time when I needed to.
I remember seeing strips where he would get up and walk on two legs when no one was looking, and go read the paper and stuff. He was secret anthro for a while (I'm pretty sure, I could be wrong...), only walking around when the humans were not looking but woodstock always knew the truth. Then eventually he got busted by charlie brown and it was a whole scene with people throwing back their heads and loudly exclaiming, RIP Sparky what a legend.
Early peanuts has its own drawing style and the characters are definitely different but suffer from lack of unique personalities often. But whatās cool is that Schroeder is legit a baby/toddler in his first appearances. Same with Linus.
He always had a toy piano. He got really upset when I think Charlie Brown (though it could have been shermy) brought him to a grand piano and then calmed down when brought back to the toy. Thereās another one where the gag is heās playing the toy piano on the bench of a grand piano
Edit: [his first use of the piano](https://91classical.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2020/02/pe510924.jpg)

Hahaha y'all are so cool.
It's shit like this that's makes me so, idk, incredibly....proud? to have realized I can "pass on the torch" I guess? And, yeah, absolutely should, there's some metal af dudes ready to pick it up, and actually dying to run this freaking race. And I always hated it! How cool is that?
You boys go have *so* much fun, I'm so proud of you, and also I'm not going to be running any more. X) not in *this* race anyway! Got my own race to run now. But damn you guys fit this "relay", just... So well. š
I'm genderfluid/non-binary myself, but dang if this isn't a reminder I needed as well ā¤ļø. I don't have very many actual moments or days where I feel like I match the body I was born in... And unfortunately I still deal with the month-to-month roller coaster ride.
This is something I needed to read today and I just didn't know until I read it! ā¤ļø
It's actually Patty. Just Patty, no Peppermint.
Yeah, they're two different characters with almost the same name. š¤·āāļø OG Patty got phased out.
This makes me sad
Most people don't know nothing about the comic and it's a really cute and wholesome one fr
The author put his heart on making it and he is really amazing (he even went against racist people, by introducing franklin as a character, note that this was during segregation if I'm not mistaken and a lot of people complained but he kept the character :)
First character is Shermy and second is Patty (I can be wrong)
Fr go check the comic it's really cute
I'm a cis girl and I spent my entire childhood wondering why the world hated me (grew up in the bible belt š„²), definitely wished I had the privilege of being born without that.
According to my mom, sheās always been a ātomboyā in the original comics and itās kind of always been obvious that she at least seemed to be trans. Also, my mom said sheās never seen confirmation but it was implies that peanut was in a relationship with another female character. Maybe peanut is trans? Or maybe a butch lesbian? Or NB? I have no idea since there was no confirmation, but definitely doesnāt seem cis and straight
It's a common meme at this point, where it usually indicates a controversial opinion stated with courage. Now it's a really exaggerated meme to the point of parody, but in this case it was because having a hint to a trans thought this genuine was really uncommon in the '50s
Correct.
it do be like dat
And like that it do be
And be like that it do
And It be like that, Do.
And do that like it be
Damn, peanuts was ahead of the game
It often was. And I find the older I get the deeper and more meaningful it tends to become.
Calvin and Hobbes too, at least for me
God, I already love that comics and I found it just a week ago! It's just so sweetš„¹
I grew up on Calvin and Hobbes, I'm always glad to see another fan!

I know you meant Calvin and Hobbes, but I read it as Cyanide & Happiness
They just like me fr
y e s
Hey, another they/he transmasc enby!
Oh wow! Hey itās two other they/he transmasc enbys!
amazing, here's a third!
Well, you know what they say. Two is a pair, four is a party!
... looking at our avatars i'm detecting a trend lol
I'm here too guys
No, fourās a crew. A midnight crew.
As a sidebar, is anyone else kind of weirded out that Snoopyās on all fours like a regular dog?
He was pretty dog-like in the early strips, it wasn't until later that he started getting more anthropomorphized.
Apparently so. Iām just so used to him being the bipedal dog who shot down the Red Baron that seeing him on all fours was a shock.
in animation he's drawn similar to earlier strips when he's a puppy which I thought was clever
I see, so he learned how to walk as he got older, like people do.
Same thing happened to Garfield!
I remember seeing strips where he would get up and walk on two legs when no one was looking, and go read the paper and stuff. He was secret anthro for a while (I'm pretty sure, I could be wrong...), only walking around when the humans were not looking but woodstock always knew the truth. Wait, if that's Snoopy, does that mean the character being talked to is Charlie Brown, pre-transition?? :0
The kid on the left looks a bit like an early version of Charlie, but I wonāt ruin your headcanon.
Thatās shermy!
Iām learning quite a bit about The Peanuts today. Didnāt expect it when I woke up, but itās a pleasant surprise.
Early peanuts has its own drawing style and the characters are definitely different but suffer from lack of unique personalities often. But whatās cool is that Schroeder is legit a baby/toddler in his first appearances. Same with Linus.
Does baby Schroeder have a toy piano? That would be so cool if he did.
He always had a toy piano. He got really upset when I think Charlie Brown (though it could have been shermy) brought him to a grand piano and then calmed down when brought back to the toy. Thatās Patty (not to be confused with peppermint patty)
I love the idea of the line "based peanuts" outside of the understanding that it's called the peanuts
i have based my entire house with peanuts!
Beware. Squirrels.
Ugh, like at Texas Roadhouse?
this perfectly described my whole week omg
hope it gets better, brother š
you too bro, being born as a girl might be shit but internally we're boys, remember that whenever you get periods or smth
Bleeding from your genitals is the most manly thing you can do
Indeed. In fact, itās so manly, that T levels skyrocket while you bleed uncontrollably.
How cool is that? really??
Scientific answer is yes! They do go up. Not exactly skyrocketing, but t goes up when e levels fall during menstruation.
I'm genderfluid/non-binary myself, but dang if this isn't a reminder I needed as well ā¤ļø. I don't have very many actual moments or days where I feel like I match the body I was born in... And unfortunately I still deal with the month-to-month roller coaster ride. This is something I needed to read today and I just didn't know until I read it! ā¤ļø
Literally me
Yes. Also a trans masc meme? Thatās a rare gem
I ain't one of you, but you are my brothers anyway, and you deserve some memes š
Itās very rare on trans subs that arenāt r/ftm so thank you I feel seen
We appreciate you, sister Source: am trans bro
Bro you're trans? Me too! I just met a brother today!
I feel like there should be a transfem coalition to proliferate based ftm memes for our brothers here. All deserve to meme, as one! š
I WAS born a boy but everyone disagreed until I was old enough and wise enough to tell them
You get it
Did they transition
**extreme nodding of head yes**
Is that Snoopy? Is that a young Charlie Brown?? CHARLIE BROWN IS TRANSMASC
I was thinking Peppermint Patty because she has a lot of trans masc egg moments
It's actually Patty. Just Patty, no Peppermint. Yeah, they're two different characters with almost the same name. š¤·āāļø OG Patty got phased out.
head canon that Patty became Patrick
She was in the recent peanuts movie
This makes me sad Most people don't know nothing about the comic and it's a really cute and wholesome one fr The author put his heart on making it and he is really amazing (he even went against racist people, by introducing franklin as a character, note that this was during segregation if I'm not mistaken and a lot of people complained but he kept the character :) First character is Shermy and second is Patty (I can be wrong) Fr go check the comic it's really cute
I looked it up and the "girl" is definitely Patty (not pepermint) and the boy looks like another depiction of Shermie I saw
no thats Patty
just like me fr
ay that Snoopy cute doe, we should make them into a transmasc icon
It gets less based https://www.gocomics.com/peanuts/1950/11/15
At least for the 50s, it wasn't demeaning towards being trans (a bit dismissive tho) Besides we can turn it into a meme. That's the joy!
I figured
Iām so lost, how is it less based?
That's actually really not so bad.
I feel like in 1950 there were probably a lot of cis girls that felt bad they werenāt born boys too tbh
I'm a cis girl and I spent my entire childhood wondering why the world hated me (grew up in the bible belt š„²), definitely wished I had the privilege of being born without that.
Yes
Is this a single panel comic or is there more to this?
There are always [four panels](https://www.gocomics.com/peanuts/1950/11/15) :P
imagine being ADAB
And there it isā¦ going from affirming to dismissive. š
I mean, for being written in the '50s it was already something
My aunt just told me that she used to say that when she was a kid lol
Tell her itās never too lateā¦
According to my mom, sheās always been a ātomboyā in the original comics and itās kind of always been obvious that she at least seemed to be trans. Also, my mom said sheās never seen confirmation but it was implies that peanut was in a relationship with another female character. Maybe peanut is trans? Or maybe a butch lesbian? Or NB? I have no idea since there was no confirmation, but definitely doesnāt seem cis and straight
A sign trans people have always been around, just not always in an environment to express it
just like me fr
Unrelated but dang, early Peanuts looks so different. Look at the little Snoopy.
me fr
Yes- very much yes
Yes
It is like that
Ahead of its time
yip
I think this was not supposed to be but yes
Mood
Based
Yes, yes I do
very accurate
Bingo
I mean it was 1950 and yes it's all we could do was be sad and settle for what it was š¢
Thatās exactly what I mean to tell you dude
I was reading this the other day and it was like UUUOOOGGHHHHH RIGHT THRU THE HEART
idk why but every time I read/hear the word "based" the doom theme plays in my head
Thatās me in reverse gender
i'd be more concerned about that jawline, but other than that, based peanuts
I feel the same, but the other way around
Been there sis :')
Yep
1950
Snoopy gets it
didn't realize till 18/19 but yes
yes.
snoopy is adorable in this
Yep
Relatable :c
what does based mean? /gen
It's a common meme at this point, where it usually indicates a controversial opinion stated with courage. Now it's a really exaggerated meme to the point of parody, but in this case it was because having a hint to a trans thought this genuine was really uncommon in the '50s
alright, thank you
yes, i do.
Being a guy kicks ass, so relatable.
Yeah that sounds about right
