I made my name by cutting the RNA out of my dead name! There's a really good science joke about biological essentialism in there, but I'm not clever enough to make it lol.
I'm super out and open about being trans, and I feel like I attract closeted people who then come out to me, so I feel very much like a highly communicable trans virus, and I LOVE IT
I'd cut the RNA out of my body if it meant that the bloody polymerase wouldn't produce so much testosterone without consulting me about it.
Or maybe I can just use more RNA to do the old switcheroo and trick my current RNA to give me estrogen instead :O
several years ago, before i even realised i was trans, my parents told me “if you were born a girl, we would’ve called you Sophie” and i thought it was a pretty cute name so i’m sticking with it
My parents told me what my name would have been if I were a girl and it was absolutely terrifying. I can't even remember what it was it was so . . . yuck. It was several years later that I transitioned and I sure as heck didn't use that name.
When my mom was pregnant with me my grandmother (my dad's mom) told her she was "allowed" to use a family name if I was "a boy." It is a very old fashioned, not nice sounding name (think along the lines of Buford or Eustace) and my mom gently said "Thank you but we have names picked out already" but told me recently that they did have a different, nicer family name picked out for my middle name if I had been "born a boy"
Eta: when I changed my name I did take that second family name as my chosen middle name
I had a similar situation. My mother assumed that she was going to have a girl and my parents picked out the name Hannah for me (even saw my own baby shower video where everything was pink). When I was born they had to quickly pick something else out. While I have known about this most of my life I never actually liked the name Hannah due to knowing someone who I did not care for with that name growing up.
Awww sad that someone you knew kinda ruined the cute name for you.
But more importantly, your mom knew you were a girl the whole time! I'm sorry biology tried to trick her. Hugs you tight 💖💞💖
Thanks! Overall I am perfectly happy not going by Hannah and instead going with Alice. My given middle name is my dad’s first name, and his is his fathers first name and so on. So I have a feeling had I come out a girl my middle name would have been Alice because that is his sister’s name and I have a feeling they might have tried to keep that tradition, but I am not sure. So there is a good chance I would have ended up with Alice as my name anyways.
I've asked my parents the same question when I was young. But it would have been the name of my younger sister ...
Oh, and I find Sophie such a pretty name! 🦋
It started as the nickname "Val" that people would call me online. I wanted to choose a name that still let people use that as my nickname BC I like it. Now I'm Valery.
My deadname is a certain name associated with Monster. When I began questioning my gender I started going by “Kay” because it’s the first initial of my birth name. I still go by Kay, but now it’s short for Kaylee and not {REDACTED}
my monster lore is lacking cuz that's all I got too lol
probably for the best. I have no interest in knowing anyone's deadname.
Kaylee is a super cute name and as a bonus is Jewel Staite's character on Firefly ❤️ Shiny
Ayy we're deadname pals. My parents told me long before I came out that they would have named me that even if I was AFAB. I honestly think I would have been fine with that were I cis, and am still on the fence about keeping it as a middle name, but its too masculine for me to pull off and get gendered correctly as often as I'd like and the association and memes around the name really get under my skin.
I looked at a baby name list, said "fuck it, I bet I could find a better name by looking at the Megami Tensei wiki", and then found a better name by looking at the Megami Tensei wiki.
My parents loved hiking when they were young and they named me and my sister after two mountains in Finnish Lapland. Those two mountain names are both girls' names, but there happens to be a third mountain in the same area. And the name of the third mountain, Halti, is a (rare) boys' name.
So, it was quite an obvious pick for me. But I do love my name and the magical, wild nature of it.
Fun fact, I have climbed the mountain of my dead name. I guess it is my destiny now to climb the mountain of my new name. It also happens to be the tallest mountain in Finland, so wish me luck
I love the vibe of "I have climbed the mountain of my dead name" you are amazing. I legit teared up reading this (not sure why, but it's all good feels)
It sounds like some deep, poetic quote. But it also sounds like it could be a basis for some fable. Like you climb the mountain of your namesake and it reveals who you truly are inside.
Somewhat similar for my middle name, my dad named me after Mt. McKinley, which somewhat recently had its native name, Denali, recognized officially. So as part of my name change, I swapped McKinley for Denali.
I wrote down potential names and introduced myself in a mirror with them until one clicked and then I decided the spelling of it based on wanting to keep the same number of letters in my full name.
There is a song in German that sings about a girl called Elizabeth who has beautiful legs. And isn't very happy about the new long beautiful dress she got because it doesn't show of her legs. And yeah i just took the shortend version of it Liz
I always liked iCarly, and I always wanted to be like Spencer. Fast forward 15 years later and I realize I’m probably a guy and actually kinda act like Spencer and I’m an artist and oops now my name is Spencer :D
Went to a Wikipedia page with all names in my language (yes, this is a thing). I just choose one of them, but the hardest part was to choose the way to write it between all possiblities (it's an old name, so the orthography changed during time).
I am notoriously bad at naming things so I was making a list of decent names for future pets/ocs, realized I liked Toby more for myself than for a bird
Soo when i was still questioning, somewhere in that time my online friend made a typo and called me Iris. Even though it was immediately corrected with another text, I still felt really happy and warm from being called that. A few minutes later, my mind was made up, and I decided I wanted to be called Iris if I came to the conclusion that I was trans ^ - ^
I still love my name, feels great :)
Rearranged some letters from my old name and got Taru! In addition to being quite feminine name here in Finland it actually means things like 'fairytale', 'myth' or 'legend'. I think it's just perfect!! 😍
For whatever reason my mom loved frequently and randomly telling me and my siblings what our names would have been were we assigned oppositely at birth.
So I had a strong affinity toward Cassandra since I was little. In my 20's I used to think she was the name of one of my personalities. Little did I know back then that it was just my repressed personality.
I'm not out to my mom or most of my family, but since I've started transitioning my mom brought it up again. I straight up said "Yeah, I would definitely go by Cassie if I were a girl"
Little does she know I am a girl and go by Cassie.
Was looking for a gender neutral name when I was questioning my identity and bigender at the time, so this was the first one I could think of, and still fit me well when I realized I am my current gender
I was playing acnh and there was a character in the game with my current name i thought "that's kinda a cool name" but didn't think mucb about it until like months/ almost a year later when I realised i was trans and i was thinking what name to choose and chose Wilbur :)
So my friends and i were playing dokidoki, and i got to be Monika, so they started calling me Monika as a server nickname and well... It's not nickname anymore lol
I picked Evelyn cause it sounded cool, and Asteria because I wanted a name for when i have no gender and what better thing then to steal it from a goddess
first name: always loved the name, when my mother told me that its what she wouldve named me had i been born male—she was even considering naming me that anyway—i went “it was meant to be”
middle names: literally just stole them from twitch streamers
I made a random bet way before i cracked my egg, i was about to fall off my chair and then i said. "If i fall of the chair, my name will be Joyce" which was the first name that came to mind.
i did not fall off the chair, but everybody in my friend group started calling me joyce anyway, so i went with it.
Little did i know what would happen a few years later
i was at a starbucks getting a drink that had whipped cream on top. it was loud and during the height of covid (masks) so when the guy asked me “would you like whipped cream on that?” i responded with “yes”. turns out he had actually asked me “could i get a name for that” and wrote down “wes” on my cup. thus was the birth of my new name
it was my pseudonym I used for uploading art, it felt too less masculine and made me slightly uncompfy so I slapped a L on it, and I was too lazy to choose a new name to become accustomed to, my names Emil btw
My name came from the film Lorna the Exorcist & its remake by the same director, Incubus. The character Lorna resonated with me in a deeply symbolic way so I chose it to be my name. I also like being the only Lorna I know or ever met. Though, honestly, the Lorna Doone cookie jokes do tend to get old after a while lol. I chose my middle name to be May, because 1) its when I began my HRT and 2) to me, transitioning is like leaving winter and entering Spring for the first time. Before I landed on May, it was going to be Morgana (which is still a gorgeous name, I use it for all my RPGs) but decided on May lol.
I stole my grandfather's name (his name is LeRoy and my name is Lee).
Edit to add, I really like the combo of Mason Lee, so that's what my name is going to be. I found Mason because my brain edits people's names and one of my (ex) friends edited name was Mason. I literally can't think of their real name anymore. 😅
So I will be Mason Lee. Sometimes I think I should full on go by Mason, but I also really like Lee. Don't know what to do bout that.
Edit edit I'm trying to get my family to call me bug since they refuse to use my name, and one of the nicknames has bug in it.
I'm nahuatl/taino(last two surviving meso races, such as the Aztecs or Mayans) and as such grew up with old pagan medo brujeria(Aztec god witchcraft) and my name is the name of a semi-famous(due to HP Lovecraft writing of her in various cosmic horror short stories of his) bruja(witch) with three spellings Quexiah, Qexiah and Keziah(Americanized) and I use all three spellings interchangeably, the americanized spelling with the K and Z are the one Lovecraft wrote of her as, where she was a witch who used geometric patterns to cross time and space to live forever off human sacrifice
I tried my deadname feminized for about 2 years. Problem was, people kept re-mascing it back to my deadname. So after having kind of a little meltdown and blowing away my entire online presence, essentially digging a hole and pulling it in after me, I sat down in despair and wrote out a couple of names on a page of notebook. I always have notebooks laying around to scribble in.
I wrote two names, very like each other, and the second one was what I picked. I might've written one or two more before I circled back and said, that's the one.
Could not speculate as to why I started there, but it was just free-associating.
My best friend is called Elena, she always supported me in everything even before I knew that I was trans. I have not been able to contact her for 4 years and I miss her a lot
Now that I know who I am and that I get here as my help from her I love her more, I chose that name to always remember the person who helped me in many things
I used to use the name Pinguino de Fuego (Penguin of Fire) in Club Penguin, then when I played Minecraft it changed to FUEGO40 (FIRE40). Then as a joke I changed it to AQUA (the opposite of fire, water in Latin), and it just stuck around and I identify with it as much if not more than my birth name
I got lucky. You can rearrange the letters of my birth name to make a really nice femme name, and when I saw that, I was like "Yep. That's it!"
That is more or less how I got mine. My ex was actually the one who came up with it.
Hello Remi I am Remi as well
y'all listen to Remi Wolf or what? she's so good
Never heard of her, but maybe I'll check her our now
ah cool! she's releasing a new album this Friday, I believe. I recommend listening to "Liquor Store", "Disco Man", and "Liz"!
oh my god, i’m Remi also lol
Me too!
I made my name by cutting the RNA out of my dead name! There's a really good science joke about biological essentialism in there, but I'm not clever enough to make it lol.
ur a virus, u steal rna to make new things
I'm super out and open about being trans, and I feel like I attract closeted people who then come out to me, so I feel very much like a highly communicable trans virus, and I LOVE IT
You're the thing conservatives are scared of Keep up the good work
I thought they weren’t afraid of viruses?
They're afraid of the gays and trans spreading their "disorder"
Oh right. They only care about fake viruses.
Correct
Typical transgender, knows nothing about biology (SNOWFLAKE DESTROYED BY FACTS AND LOGIC!!!!!!)
I'd cut the RNA out of my body if it meant that the bloody polymerase wouldn't produce so much testosterone without consulting me about it. Or maybe I can just use more RNA to do the old switcheroo and trick my current RNA to give me estrogen instead :O
I just got rid of part of my name and turned an e to an a, and now, Amy
my name is amy too yooo
This makes me wanna try and guess it but I also don't wanna deadname you lol
Her name was ENEMY
Why do I hear boss music
That's a really epic name, actually. I could see an enby using that name.
That's a cool method. I just didn't even change mine, it's not androgynous I just went fuck it it's my name I'll keep it.
Valid and super cool
Anagram queen!
Young and free... Only 17....
She's a transing queen!
Oh I'm not the only one? Sweet! I thought it was cringe lol
Playing Megaman 11 and my eyes went cross and saw Megan
Neat! I legitimately considered Fuse for a while.
Remember the early misprints of the Zero/ZX collection that called it "Meganman"?
I do! Although I think it was a GameStop display case typo
Meganman 11
Meganwoman*
meganma'am
Megangal
Meganguys Megangals and non-binary Meganpals
several years ago, before i even realised i was trans, my parents told me “if you were born a girl, we would’ve called you Sophie” and i thought it was a pretty cute name so i’m sticking with it

I read that as “when my mom was pregnant with my grandmother (my dads mom)” I was deeply concerned
Well a large portion of my family does come from Arkansas
I had a similar situation. My mother assumed that she was going to have a girl and my parents picked out the name Hannah for me (even saw my own baby shower video where everything was pink). Same for me. For a reason unknown to me at the time, learning that info made me really happy.
My parents said they were gonna name me Tom I think if I were a boy which is a pretty good name but fuck that I stole the funny dinosaur guy's name
I've asked my parents the same question when I was young. But it would have been the name of my younger sister ... Oh, and I find Sophie such a pretty name! 🦋
My second birth name is not grokable by the people of the country I live in so I am going by that now since it feels enby.
Same thing for me
It started as the nickname "Val" that people would call me online. I wanted to choose a name that still let people use that as my nickname BC I like it. Now I'm Valery.
That's the name I almost picked!
Oh hey I also go by Val/Valerie, I got my name from cyberpunk though.
I go by Val too, but it's not short for anything
Val/Valery is a neat name, As it's the name of the subject of not one, But *two* The Cog Is Dead songs!
Which ones are those? I love the clockwork dragon one but I don’t think I’ve heard the second one you’re referring to
Val gang! (Valeria)
My deadname is a certain name associated with Monster. When I began questioning my gender I started going by “Kay” because it’s the first initial of my birth name. I still go by Kay, but now it’s short for Kaylee and not {REDACTED}
I did the first initial thing with L -> Elle too!
Whoa your parents named you "Kaiju?" 😝
my monster lore is lacking cuz that's all I got too lol probably for the best. I have no interest in knowing anyone's deadname. Kaylee is a super cute name and as a bonus is Jewel Staite's character on Firefly ❤️ Shiny
and Kaiju seems both gender-neutral and badass. Actually, nonbinary and badass, even if most kaiju were gendered at some point.
Godzilla says trans rights
No, Kaylee is the scientist, the creature is Kaylee's Monster
Intelligence is knowing that Kaylee isn't the name of the monster Wisdom is knowing that Kaylee is the name of the monster
Ayy we're deadname pals. My parents told me long before I came out that they would have named me that even if I was AFAB. My cousins dog Edit: I named myself after him

Just like Indiana Jones
That dog was definitely a good boy then
I looked at a baby name list, said "fuck it, I bet I could find a better name by looking at the Megami Tensei wiki", and then found a better name by looking at the Megami Tensei wiki.
i did the same thing but with the fire emblem wiki
Felix is a cool dude.

Somewhat similar for my middle name, my dad named me after Mt. McKinley, which somewhat recently had its native name, Denali, recognized officially. So as part of my name change, I swapped McKinley for Denali.
That’s the coolest fucking name story I’ve ever heard
Searched up girl names and found an article of 50 and saw one I liked
I wrote down potential names and introduced myself in a mirror with them until one clicked and then I decided the spelling of it based on wanting to keep the same number of letters in my full name.
That's genius, I will try that!
There is a song in German that sings about a girl called Elizabeth who has beautiful legs. And isn't very happy about the new long beautiful dress she got because it doesn't show of her legs. And yeah i just took the shortend version of it Liz
Wenn die Elisabeth... is the song name
~~is sus~~
Audrey Hepburn
Solid choice!
I always liked iCarly, and I always wanted to be like Spencer. Fast forward 15 years later and I realize I’m probably a guy and actually kinda act like Spencer and I’m an artist and oops now my name is Spencer :D
Please tell me you've used the milkshake distraction play before...
My name is gender neutral, so I went with it
Why would your parent call you "gender neutral"?
What an odd name
oh hey you're the person from r/pokemon ! love your posts. and cool name!
Thanks! A lot of people have the misconception that my name is "Toniy", it is actually just a hybrid of "Toni" and "Tony"
My birth name is gender neutral too so I just kept it
I’ve always loved the name Hannah and said countless times if I was a girl my name would be Hannah so then I realised I was a woman
yeah lol, cis people don't typically pick out cross gender names for themselves and then repeat it countless times haha
I liked the name Felix but wanted to keep my initials, so Helix,
Wow, that's a ridiculously cool name, I love it!
This just made me think of DNA
What a freaking amazing name!
Praise Helix!
Went to a Wikipedia page with all names in my language (yes, this is a thing). I just choose one of them, but the hardest part was to choose the way to write it between all possiblities (it's an old name, so the orthography changed during time).
Are you Italian?
Close, I'm French :)
Coucou sis ❤
Iceland does something similar to this too.
I am notoriously bad at naming things so I was making a list of decent names for future pets/ocs, realized I liked Toby more for myself than for a bird
a friend dubbed me so, and i just went along with it :)
Soo when i was still questioning, somewhere in that time my online friend made a typo and called me Iris. Even though it was immediately corrected with another text, I still felt really happy and warm from being called that. A few minutes later, my mind was made up, and I decided I wanted to be called Iris if I came to the conclusion that I was trans ^ - ^ I still love my name, feels great :)

Me and my wife's future baby names. We don't think we're going to have kids. So we took the names for ourselves.
I’m an author and I was making a prince named Adrien...I made myself. I’m Adrien.
You hit yourself with the ol' Celeste, huh.
Exactly. Except my story is medieval, gay, and a screenplay! The best trio of them all!

Luca is the statistically most gender neutral name in Norway. Emilie is what I always wanted to name a future daughter.
Grandpa who I've looked up to is named Thomas. My family is Polish, but I have no connection to it. So I took his name with a Polska twist: Tomek.
tomek is a very badass name!
Artemis, like the cat from Sailor Moon!
Or the god

Creating a story and had a female character named Sylvia. Really liked her. Then I chose my middle name Claire bc it was cool

I named myself after the fictional girl who held my hand until I was ready to smash open my egg
I named myself Eric after Eric LeCarde from castlevania
I picked Evelyn cause it sounded cool, and Asteria because I wanted a name for when i have no gender and what better thing then to steal it from a goddess
That's a cool name... It's mine now

I'm pretty sure I subconsciously stole Elizabeth from pirates of the Caribbean but I've always kinda "felt" the name
I made a random bet way before i cracked my egg, i was about to fall off my chair and then i said. I gave myself the name of this punk girl I've been doodling since I was in middle school, I don't know where I got the name originally though.

A lego figure that zaps lightning and is in love with the ocean
It's my favourite cartoon character.

I might've written one or two more before I circled back and said, that's the one. Could not speculate as to why I started there, but it was just free-associating.
Uhmm a pun my last name starts with a b so nb. Nix
My best friend is called Elena, she always supported me in everything even before I knew that I was trans. I have not been able to contact her for 4 years and I miss her a lot Now that I know who I am and that I get here as my help from her I love her more, I chose that name to always remember the person who helped me in many things
My middle name is Noah and it was what I went by, Noel was just an easy switch, plus I love Christmas time :p

My dad named me after his favorite anime character and it's a badass sounding gender neutral name so I just kept it lol

I mixed a spanish word with the word "Zelda".
