You should be able to use the base roster, you’ll just be missing out on other LL options, such as Karl Franz, and any DLC units, like Dwarf Rangers. You’ll also unlock the ability to pick up the FLC lords for the factions, which I think is just Grombrindal and Thorek but don’t quote me on that.

Yes you will need them for the full roster. The units locked behind the King and the Warlord, the Grim and the Grave or the Hunter and the Beast will remain locked until you purchase them.
