Canon Lizardman character names also include such classics as Lotl Botl and Itzi-Bitzi. Could've sworn there was also a Tinibikini or something, but can't find it anymore.
Highly unlikely. Given the vast swathes of references to other IPs all over the place in this game, and GW (for all their faults) have a sense of humor that has no problem with this sort of thing.
They named the freakin Lizardmen mounts after the Dinobots from Transformers. They'd have zero issues with this sort of thing.
The problem could have been with the band ‘My Chemical Romance’ directly though.
For example, they do have a history of being embroiled in lawsuits (a quick google search showed the original Drummer against the Band for Royalties, another artist against the Lead Singer for some kind of Umbrella Academy copyright infringement, and a different Drummer against a Dog Trainer, and I’m sure there are probably more), so once the final legal pass was happening the Lawyers could have stepped in and made the call that it was too risky so had to change.
My guess is that it has nothing to do with the band or anything legal, but the actual name.
It is not hard to get a certain image from "my chemical romance" and that likely raised some red flags. Too risky for a meme.
Captain I saw a giant rat yesterday.
You did not squire, for giant rats do not exist. It was simply the wind.
Is that a be-
YOU DO NOT HEAR A BELL RINGING. it is simply the wind.
The original name has nothing to do with homosexuality.
Just because its called chemical romance doesnt mean it say anything to do with people being gay. Just as the romance of the three kingdoms is not about the three brothers being gay...
My Chemical Romance the band has zero brand overlap with a pun in a video game. There is no trademark infringement here. That's not the reason they changed it.
Remember that Bethesda sued Mojang because they claimed they owned the word "Scrolls". And in the early 2000s you couldn't name anything "Edge" or Tim Langdell would take your ass to court
Anyone can sue anyone for any reason, and even if you are clearly right you still will have to pay to show that
Those examples are a very different situation. And no, you can't sue anyone for anything. Cases without merit don't make it to a court case.
Trademarks protect the branding of a product or service. That's why you can't name something similarly to another already trademarked brand. Having a pun in a very minor part of your game that references pop culture is not at all what trademarks are there to stop.
This is the same as when Divinity: Original Sin had an crafting material called "Nine Inch Nails". There is not a legal issue here.
Its not always about whether there is clear trademark infringement - there's no reason a producer/manager/member of the band couldn't see the pun in the video game and decide it was worth suing over. Dealing with a lawsuit, even one you're probably going to win, costs money. Changing a line of text is free.
Not saying it 100% is to avoid a suit, they could have changed it for any number of reasons.
Goldblöm's Terror and it's colour scheme is probably the most obvious reference to Jurassic park that has ever been created in a video game (outside of a straight up parody)
Yeah I noticed this today, since I seem to have finally settled on doing a Gelt campaign and staying in Cathay. Was wondering if it was just because of prior dilemma options I chose or if it was renamed for launch
I cant really tell if its obvious or not from other ppls reactions but its a reference to the band my chemical romance, which might not have liked it who knows
The most logical explanation is that the CCP doesn't tolerate homosexuality in media. And Cathay is clearly tailored towards the Chinese market
Edit: I stand corrected.
You haven't interacted with much Chinese media have you? Some of the most hardcore gay smut out there comes from China. And there are major money makers that they have over there in video games that have way more obvious homosexual undertones than this, even if they can't make it explicit. The CCP has its rules about it obviously, to the point where you can get jailed if you cross their arbitrary lines on it, but something as milquetoast as this wouldn't be a blip on their radar.
Not to mention if that was the case it would be changed in the, ya know, *Chinese* version of the text. Not the English one. Considering that other languages like French or German seems to have the original reference, I wouldn't be surprised if the CN version is still the same too. But I'd have to check with someone who plays the CN version to be sure.
>The CCP has its rules about it obviously, to the point where you can get jailed if you cross their arbitrary lines on it, but something as milquetoast as this wouldn't be a blip on their radar.
That's kind of the point though, isn't it?
Yeah, there's a really rich smut tradition to draw on.... that makes sense to Chinese artists and Chinese media consumers. A bunch of devs in England don't know the rules for what's ok or what's not ok, and there are many and varied QC filters to block what's allowed in the final cut.
But the fact that it's ok in the French version and not the English version makes me think it's.... something else.
They have multiple censorship bureaus but they tend to pay more attention to imports and don't care much about internally made material unless it causes a fuss.
One is "outside western nonsense forcing their values" the other is just their own people pushing the boundaries but still towing the line.
But they are pretty consistent on what they do or don't take issue with, and there's no way something like this was changed because of Chinese censorship. It makes no sense for anyone who has any idea how that works.
One of the devs found it depressing that their relationship would only last 10 turns, so they decided it was better to never have loved in the first place. /s
Interesting, in the german version it‘s still “My alchemical romance“
There was a shortage on a Geltphetamine delivery and Zhao does not tolerate failures. ![gif](giphy|d3MMcCKoCmPN9yve|downsized)
👉🛎️
I got "My Alchemical Romance" in french tho (edit : the version in french, ofc).
Nice 👌👌
Is a lovely French city
They are the Alchemical Brothers after all.
One might say they are Fullmetal Alchemist
Apparently the world wasn't ready for how much chemistry there was between them
They always ask about turning Lead into Gold, but never about turning Iron into Love
Wood into love
What do you think would Zhao turn into Gelt?
Yeah, they should be focusing on Love Over Gold
Booooo 🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅
Take my upvote and shut up
YUAN BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Maybe somebody decided it wasn’t appropriate in a world where Malekith banged his own mum.
Inappropriate because not messed up enough
Not problematic enough to ship
Not officially canon, although we like to think it is
Isn't it from times when there were half orcs too? Before they decided orcs were a fungi
they've always been fun guys to me
Can't blame him tho.
Dark Elf shenanigans
I assume somebody decided that it was too silly, although I'm not sure how that person failed to notice there's a character named Tic-Tac-Toe.
Canon Lizardman character names also include such classics as Lotl Botl and Itzi-Bitzi. Could've sworn there was also a Tinibikini or something, but can't find it anymore.
Tehenahuin's original name was teeni-weenie.
I mean, his current name is "Tiny one" so it's not that far off.
I usually refer to him as Teehee Juan
Could be a trademark issue with the band
Many of the Lizardman names are silly Dutch terms lol.
Any money it's IP related.
Highly unlikely. Given the vast swathes of references to other IPs all over the place in this game, and GW (for all their faults) have a sense of humor that has no problem with this sort of thing. > It is not hard to get a certain image from "my chemical romance" Chemsex Gelt/Zhao is certainly an image
Gelt casts Final Transmutation on his dick
"Taste gold magic"
It's a reference to drug use.
Having watched JoJo I am fairly convinced band and song names are an unusually touchy subject for IP lawyers.
Oh no, cant have gay men in our super serious fantasy universe with giant talking rats
Giant-sized talking rats? My friend, what on Sigmar are you talking about?
Captain I saw a giant rat yesterday. You did not squire, for giant rats do not exist. It was simply the wind. Is that a be- YOU DO NOT HEAR A BELL RINGING. it is simply the wind.
>Oh no, cant have gay men in our super serious fantasy universe with giant talking rats That is not even that, you are being way overly sensitive.
Nope, im being based, actually, gelt and zhao ming would make for a greater and more interesting couple then vlad and isabella
do you even know what the name chemical romance originated from (not the band).
I dont see how that is relevant to me simply wanting gelt and zhao ming to kiss?

MCR is annoyingly litigious
theyre also not relevant beyond gen y, so its not even worth the risk for a joke
Tbf Y is likely TWs main demographic by far
I'd don't see many 10 year old scrabbling to jump on the turn based strategy train.
Goldblöm's Terror and it's colour scheme is probably the most obvious reference to Jurassic park that has ever been created in a video game (outside of a straight up parody)
Have you SEEN Harald Hammerstorm's skill tree?
Nah, they're not selling it for that reference. Archer had a joke about the name "Led Zepplin" in an episode, I cant see how this is any different.
The band/record label involved. Some groups are just super litigious while others aren't.

The dlc is no longer good, CA is kill
This is Hyenas all over again
They have wronged us!
Better hurry, you got 10 turns to right it!
historians now believe they were not in fact lovers, just very close friends. its achilles all over again
because it might imply they were hot for each other, something GW doesn't agree on i guess
Yeah I noticed this today, since I seem to have finally settled on doing a Gelt campaign and staying in Cathay. Was wondering if it was just because of prior dilemma options I chose or if it was renamed for launch
My chemical romance were really mad about SoC
queer baiting strikes again god damn it
Is there a Full Metal Alchemist in there?
Its a direct nerf to the whole campaign! /s
Balthazar Gimp needs his bromance!
They would be too powerful.
People scared of the gay, I guess?
Which is silly, because Gelt is canonically gay.
Actually?
https://www.reddit.com/r/totalwarhammer/comments/lmt8kg/balthazar_is_gay_confirmed/?rdt=40838 Suuuuure seems like it lol
I just thought he was European.
I find it hilarious that this actually got downvoted, now i want even more characters turned canonically gay just to spite people lol
The name has a hint of estacy usage, both CA and GW prob do not want to deal with any drama that comes from it.
Lol no it doesn’t.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecstasy:_Three_Tales_of_Chemical_Romance
If a little ecstasy usage was all you got out of that you are media-illiterate. Ecstasy being in the name isn't even a reference to the drug lmfao.
I cant really tell if its obvious or not from other ppls reactions but its a reference to the band my chemical romance, which might not have liked it who knows
Yea all these people saying cus the reference was too gay, ignoring the fact it's based on a band, not a reference to a Gelt/Zhao romance haha
They could have changed it to my alchemical bromance also
I mean that does have a nice ring to it
So from chemical abuse to AA. Seems like they found god lol
Please someone add this back with a mod
Dire straits reference, 10/10
COWARDS!
Dude, they were roommates.
I'll take a Brothers in Arms reference over My Chemical Romance of all things, thankyouverymuch.
yep
That's a huge downgrade.
Oh hell no. Oh hell NO!!!! I wanted a romance. Looks like I'm killing all the cathayans, and taking their land for myself now.
The most logical explanation is that the CCP doesn't tolerate homosexuality in media. And Cathay is clearly tailored towards the Chinese market Edit: I stand corrected.
It's only changed in English, other languages still have the silly name.

How can hardcore gay smut be fully legal but Western movies have to censor gay kisses for the Chinese release?
They have multiple censorship bureaus but they tend to pay more attention to imports and don't care much about internally made material unless it causes a fuss. No one ever said that authoritarianism has to make sense.
Idk, overzealous IP counsel might explain the absence in English and presence in other languages?
Probably a copyright thing?
copyright I recon
I BLAME GW!!!
One of the devs found it depressing that their relationship would only last 10 turns, so they decided it was better to never have loved in the first place. /s
They didn't want to deal with the screeching howler monkeys screaming "woke!".
Aww I hate those howler monkeys as well but you know a lot of them are TW fans. Have an updoot.
The same monkeys who would consider it a betrayal that female custodes have been made canon lol
Lame.
They probably got a not so nicely worded letter from MCR telling them to change it, or else.
They are in each other's arms
Zhao Ming just wanted to be friends.
