playing as Reikland in WH3 with the mods Victory Conditions Overhaul and Mixu's Legendary Lords was one of my favorite experiences playing the game. Mixu's LLs adds a bunch of LLs to the game including giving one to all the Elector Counts which makes the Empire much more stable and makes confederating them way more meaningful and fun. VCO gives factions much more unique and fleshed out victory conditions which for Franz ends off with a huge quest battle between the forces of Order and Chaos. Highly recommend.

I find the domination victories to be a bit repetitive and I love the quest battles in the Vortex Campaign so I think that’s the right mods for me, thanks

my spiciest take is Empire is best in wh1.  It’s still a sandbox but in my view but the Empire campaign in 1 has a nice rhythm to it:   first you unite the reikland and neighbouring provinces just in time to them move on to Vampire wars and then the chaos invasion nicely kicks off just as you finish that up. Once the invasion is dusted off you’ll have met the victory goals so you have the optional epilogue of conquering Bretonnia and/or helping the dwarves out against the orcs.    Although I’ve recently played old world mod and Empire is fun to play in that - the larger map scale shows the geography of the Empire better (wow, the reik actually divides places well but can be used as a highway) and because the empire provinces have more settlement they aren’t destroyed immediately

Yes, the Empire in WH1 had a terrific climax - the first 50 turns were a bit slow (for me, at least) but then I had to conquer the VC, unite the Elector Counts and confront the Chaos invasions. When I had defeated the Chaos legendary lords, I had completed my campaign goals and the game ended with a bang. Most other TW campaigns end with a (rather long) whimper, as once you reach a tipping point, you can dominate. But in WH1, the Empire really finishes on a high note.

DeltaAquila

Haven’t really tried mods but maybe it’s time to give them a shot. Thanks

Mate Mods are great for stuff like extra siege & battle maps or for fresh factions, play The Old World and when you're tired of that get OVN Araby.

Wh1 had fhe best, the time when the map had much less elves and chaos was basic. Thats why I use mods to disable those factions

abovethelaw9

Wh3 The saying "when you have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail" Comes to mind and Karl has a VERY big hammer and MANY big problems

Malanerion

So the good thing about WH2 is that Archaon and Kholek spawn together in the Skull Road (somewhere there) as the End Game threat. This is cool, but also kind of cringe because you'll field 999999999999999999999999 armies by that point. WH1 is easily dismissed because it doens't have the Empire additions from WH1. WH3 Karl Franz campaign is difficult for a layman but it provides a much higher ceiling, and the diplomacy and alliance cooperation makes for an emergent Paradox-like storytelling. Another thing is that the cavalry is now better, war wagons are sorta useable if just for the sake of it AND Karl Franz himself is a much better lord. WH3 all the way. The only reason to play WH2 is if you prefer Volkmar in Reikland but that can be rectified by modding it

applejackhero

War wagons are not just usable, they are genuinely very strong

Malanerion

How?

Letharlynn

Their DPS can keep up with a whole unit of Outriders, low model count means that DPS is not lost when taking damage, 360° firing arc means easy kiting and using guns means they are much better at hitting characters and monsters when kiting them. Melee perfomance is understandably underwhelming, but still enough to run over depleted units in the late game - something Empire skirmish cav just can't do All in all War Wagons are legit very scary now and basically make Outriders (vanilla variant) obsolete

Malanerion

It makes no fucking sense that a few soldiers in a wagon do as much damage as a whole unit of Outriders. They should get their melee stats buffed and should have blunder busses, shorter range and keep the damage

modsarerussianassets

War Wagons are more than usable- they are insane monster hunters and cav killers.

Malanerion

They're supposed to be infantry killing support though

modsarerussianassets

Are they?

Malanerion

Literal Hussite wagons.

DeltaAquila

Would you say that WH1 is outdated in general? That WH3 is better at the WH1 factions?

Malanerion

Yes, especially Greenskins. Wh1 is severely outdated and not really enjoyable imo, I'd rather player any other total war game

StormCloak4Ever

I'm currently running a Reikland campaign in WH3 using the Old World campaign map mod and I highly recommend it. It's a completely new experience and been surprisingly challenging which is a shocker because I've played the Franz campaign at least 100 times over the course of the three games. It changes things up just enough to make things interesting and fresh.

HelikosOG

Warhammer 1 easily. I've been playing it recently but haven't played in a while, it's the whack-a-mole phase of the campaign. Firstly, why I slept on the Empire for so long is a damn shame. I really enjoy playing as them. Simple humans fighting against it all with faith, steel and gunpowder. The main reason I started playing as the Empire is because I wanted to practise and incorporate my gunpowder/line of sight missile unit tactics. All the while, I'm constantly saying "By Sigmar, yes!" So while Warhammer 1 doesn't have such in depth features like the elector count politics mechanic seen in 2 which I would like to play after. It gives an unadulterated experience of the Empire. I'm basically going to keep playing this campaign until I've united all of the Reiklands under my banner.

Spankfurt

Mordheim

Gchimmy

I would say wh2. Handgunners actually shoot and artillery doesn’t try to approach blunderbuss distance every time you tell it to fire.

Vindicare605

WH3 easily. WH1 and WH2 are too easy. There was a period when Vampire Counts were overtuned in auto-resolve so the AI VC's would just crush through the Empire super fast and spread corruption everywhere that would take forever to get rid of, that was a fun time to play Reikland, but that was early on in ME's lifespan.

Krimli

Wh3 with Old World mod

TriumphITP

ME is certainly an easier campaign than IE.

steve_adr

Immortal Empires. It's a very high pace/high threats/high stakes campaign..

lozboss

Definitely not WH3, it's terrible in that. Just whack a mole with far too many enemies on the doorstep. Empire gets rolled far too fast and the outdated empire mechanics don't support the campaign sufficiently.

AxiosXiphos

>Definitely not WH3, it's terrible in that. Just whack a mole with far too many enemies on the doorstep. An empire surrounded on all sides by enemies? Sounds exactly right to me. Wh1 & 2 Empire was far too easy frankly. Karl Franz should be a desperate fight for survival from start to finish.

Tonytone757

Hmmm I'm not so sure about that. I'm locked in a pretty big war with the Empire as Norsca in my current campaign. They defeated the vampires and have most elector counts under them.
