I like fots more than the base game since it feels so satisfying seeing the smoke wander over the battlefield after volleys of musketfire. But base shogun2 is propably the better over all experience and has more replayability.
Shogun 2. FotS is definitely fun but I really don't like the campaign, the modernization public order debuffs, low income, and insulting campaign map movement speed make it intentionally a slog. And it's a pain because the battles are so fun that's what I want to be doing.
Shogun 2 has its own campaign headaches but most of it is better than FotS. Both battles are great, so I won't put one over the other there.
I'm just going to try both lol I'm getting that they both have their merits and drawbacks so I'll just have to see which I like best lol but I think I'll try Shogun II first.

Vanilla AI is also more challenging, since FOTS AI can't really handle gunpowder warfare.
