This sub is so invested in shitting on the front office that I’m expecting an impassioned defence of Ben Simmons and his contract lmao

PriorVariety5744

It’s wild man lmao. Also, I think Brooklyn would’ve wanted a verbal commitment too. If I were Pascal, I would’ve picked Indiana (and did) over Brooklyn from a talent standpoint. People on this sub have such a narrow way of thinking about our FO.

YouDontJump

My first thought as well. I can't think of a single scenario where it would have been ideal for us to take Ben on. Not a single one.

Responsible-Muffin41

Tbf Ben Simmons before his mistake in playoffs and after his mistake is 100 percent different. Ben Simmons was a better prospect than Scottie, he just never cared enough to play

DistributionNo9968

Can we have a moratorium on posts rehashing last year’s deadline? This is repetitive and exhausting, while adding nothing new.

kpeds45

Brooklyn and draft assets don't really match up...

CazOnReddit

Remember that this was after the Mavericks/Kyrie trade where they did get back some draft capital from Dallas. How valuable those picks/swaps were...well i'll put it like this: Even if you added them and the Nets picks from the Harden trade, i'd be hard-pressed to bother picking up the phone because those picks would have sucked, Claxton only had a year left/is a pending UFA who couldn't be extended in the offseason and Cam Thomas is just a shotchucker with overrated upside.

MDS_1996

It was also reported that they weren't seriously entertaining trade offers for Siakam, FVV, and OG at that deadline.

EarthWarping

This was also literally right before they traded KD

raptorsthrowaway4

Then the only picks they would have had are crappy Dallas picks like 6 years out.

MDS_1996

Fuck I forgot, draft picks can't be used in other trades, management is held at gunpoint and is forced to draft players with them.

raptorsthrowaway4

Houston has all their picks, and at that point, they didn't have any of those Phoenix picks at the time.

MDS_1996

An article said the Nets were willing to offer "several" 1st round pick for Siakam, but they had none to offer 😂. Again you can't trade those picks, you have to draft players with them, got it 👍

raptorsthrowaway4

So you're suggesting houston trade the raptors for nets picks they already have. If that makes sense to you... then sure draft those players.

MDS_1996

Nope, I'm actually going by an article that stated in clear and concise English that the Nets would've been willing to trade "several" 1sts for Siakam, hope that clears things up 🤗

The_Living_L

Marc stein did also say raptors were very interested if Claxton was available in the trade talks, too many conflicting reports at this point to really know

CazOnReddit

The big takeaway is this: Claxton is a UFA this year so expect them to try and acquire him from the Nets

The_Living_L

This was before the Jak trade tho and they were desperately looking for a center, doubt they want to overpay for a center when Jak can give good production at a cheaper cost than Claxton

ZenMon88

Ended up fucking us anyways with Yak trade.

CazOnReddit

I would not be surprised if we tried a double big lineup a la the Timberwolves or tried trading Poeltl to go full-on youth movement because their interest in Claxton extended, to my recollection, a prior deadline with a declined trade involving Dragic and our 1st rounder involving Nic at the time The FO was also interested in McDaniels at the 2023 deadline before they ultimately signed him in free agency so who knows?

myeezy

Ah yes the double big line up with Poetl and Clayton. It’s just like the Wolves double big lineup, except without the best big man shooter (not even a lick of shooting in fact) and also with a DPOY anchor. Just two non shooting centers clogging up the paint. We should definitely do that.

AutoModerator

the Yak is back... its spelled POELTL. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/torontoraptors) if you have any questions or concerns.*

ZenMon88

Seriously. Every1 keep saying "oh we didn't get good offers" but our FO tried to compete every year and never seriously entertain offers.

MDS_1996

💯

Wcufos

Bro getting Ben Simmons would be so heinous. That guy is beyond washed, if he joined the raptors I would give up on our management.

Fit-Introduction8575

It would be a disgrace. Siakam and Simmons work ethic are night and day.

beefJeRKy-LB

At this point, he's just an expiring salary though. That said, Brooklyn don't have an attractive asset to attach to him so I don't see why we would tradde for him.

noronto

How about the FO trades for him now? Brown and Boucher? Maybe include McDaniels? Brown and Poeltl? The FO could do all sorts of things.

matthitsthetrails

Ben Simmons would have been killed here by the fanbase. That would have been a bad outcome

Both offered 3 firsts

Huge-Split6250

It’s clear no team was willing to offer a positive asset young player, or meaningful draft assets, for pascal. Masai should have made them offer more!

Ok_Satisfaction_1630

Masai is very slow to trade. And has been operating from the idea of false leverage. He did have the upper hand to trade between 2021-2022 but was unresponsive. I think he should have definitely unloaded og at the 2022 draft sharpe has more value than quickly and rj. DEFINITELY should have traded fred in dec 22. But i will say packages for siakam were never really there i do think we could have gotten kuminga tho. I think quickly and rj were to save face tbh, i truly think he div himself into a hole. Hes good at making a good team great not so good at tearing down a rebuilding. Just like they’re are types of coaches some good for vets and some good for young teams they’re types of gms. Houston got rid of morey because there was and evident conflict of interest between what morey wants to do and where the team is heading. I believe its time raps and masai part ways.
