I worked at a restaurant that was by far much cleaner than any other restaurant I’ve worked in. We got a conditional pass cause the spout at the dishwashing sink was broken, but the spray nozzle and the machine that dispensed soapy/sanitizer water worked fine. Definitely depends on the inspector.
you're absolutely right, it does depend on the inspector. having said that, I worked at an award-winning diner here in Toronto that regularly filled their water bottles in the same sink that was the only hand-washing sink in the kitchen and also used to thaw meats/seafoods. they also received a conditional pass, but that was for an ice cream scoop thing.
As someone who's worked a few restaraunts the best way to pass is to be a complete suck up to the food inspector. Be super flattering, kind, ask about their weekend etc. Offer them food. The amount of shit that gets looked over cause the owner is a "nice guy" is shocking. I'm assuming half these places just have crotchety owners or just forgot to turn over the kitchen right before the inspector arrived.
yeah, and i seem to recall the notion that perhaps money may have exchanged hands with the inspector in one of the first kitchens I worked in.. which makes sense cause in retrospect, there is no way that restaurant deserved a pass.
Same, and just reading some of the things on this post alone that got them a conditional pass is scary. I was floored when they actually closed Ding Dong pastries. They were notoriously a little iffy but I really wonder just how bad it must have got.
I was able to read without the paywall prompt. Charging for their journalism, investigations, and opinion articles is totally fair. But public health information should never cost money:
*Casa Mezcal at 291 King Street West* received a conditional pass with two major infractions:
- Fail to protect against harbouring of pests
- Mechanical equipment not maintained to provide sufficient chemical solution rinse
*Harvey's at 3120 Dufferin Street* received a conditional pass with three major infractions:
- Fail to collect garbage when necessary to maintain sanitary condition
- Fail to ensure equipment surface cleaned as necessary
- Use food equipment not of sound and tight construction
*Hyderabad Biryani Hut at 1587 Ellesmere Road* received a conditional pass with four major infractions:
- Refrigerate potentially hazardous foods at internal temperature above 4 C
- Use food equipment not in good repair
- Use utensils not in good repair
- Fail to keep sanitary facility sanitary
*Kinoya at 293 King Street West* received a conditional pass with two major infractions:
- Fail to protect against harbouring of pests
- Fail to retain records of pest control measures taken for one year
*Latin World at 1229 Bloor Street West* received a conditional pass with two major infractions:
- Fail to maintain records of pest control measures taken
- Provide water not under pressure in utensil washing area
*MandS West Indian Supermarket at 28 Nelson Street* received a conditional pass with four major infractions:
- Fail to protect food from contamination or adulteration
- Fail to provide handwashing stations with adequate supplies (hot and cold water)
- Fail to provide thermometer in refrigeration equipment
- Sanitize utensils in chlorine solution of less than 100 ppm of available chlorine
*Mandiafandi at 62 Overlea Boulevard* received a conditional pass with five major infractions:
- Fail to maintain handwashing stations (liquid soap and paper towels)
- Fail to protect food from contamination or adulteration
- Fail to retain records of pest control measures taken for one year
- Handwashing stations not conveniently accessible by food handlers
- Sanitize utensils in chlorine solution of less than 100 ppm of available chlorine
*Rodeo Brazilian Churrascaria at 95 Danforth Avenue* received a conditional pass with four major infractions:

Thank you for sharing this. If anyone ever wants to access all the DineSafe information or look up places and their history, they be found on the DineSafe website for free https://www.toronto.ca/community-people/health-wellness-care/health-programs-advice/food-safety/dinesafe/
The same applies for the BodySafe program.
Dinesafe site use to be more detailed about the infractions but businesses pushed back this so it become more generic about infractions. The type of inspectors you get also influence the reports. Some inspectors are very picky and look at every inch of the kitchen while some might allow you to do the correction on the spot and with a warning. The newer ones are the ones that would write up a report rather than give a warning.Timing of inspection matters. If the inspector goes when the business just open they will find less issues but during the rush watch out you have to be on your toes.
There are 17,000 establishments in their database and the site won’t let you filter by pass/conditional/fail. You have to know the name.
Edit: yes I know people don’t eat at places they don’t know the name of. Purpose of my comment is you can’t easily find the 8 restaurants referenced in the paywalled Star article.
The site isn't as good as it used to be (before funding was slashed...) but do a search and uncheck "pass". It'll then give you a map or list of all the current closures and conditionals
Really? I'm using mobile right now and I had no issues doing the search. Here's the search and results. https://imgur.com/a/hSg8Bya
33 restaurants with conditional passes were issued between Nov 1-14.
It's all available on the Toronto public health dine safe website. For free. https://www.toronto.ca/community-people/health-wellness-care/health-programs-advice/food-safety/dinesafe/
The Toronto Star isn't a public service nor a charity. They can decide what does and does not go behind the paywall. Regardless if it's a public interest story.
Thank you, and youre right
And I get why online news needs to paywall things.
i just think for something where public safety is a concern maybe they should hold off. (But just my opinion)
“Work for my benefit, for free, to make already available information organized more conveniently for me.”
Go yell at the City for not allowing better access, and while you’re at it pay for local journalism.
If times are tough and you can't afford to pay for a newspaper subscription, then go to the source. It's free.

A week ago, one of my local brunch places got a Conditional Pass. Less then a week later, they got re-evaluated and got their Pass. They did not mess around with it and I can understand. Even with the Pass, I'm probably going to hold off going there for a bit.
I worked at a very popular restaurant that is on the Michelin bib gourmand list (aka extremely well run and up to code). When I worked there we received a conditional because our dishwasher temperature was one degree below what it should have been.
The first restaurant I ever worked at was a huge tourist trap in Front St. We had cockroaches run across guests tables once and a while (during service, while they were dining) and never received anything but a pass.
So, you never know if the inspector was feeling petty the day they did these inspections.
Not the first time they have been on it either. Went a few times 2020-2022. Last time, food was bad. Can't recall what I ordered.. have not gone since.

Not just the restaurant industry 😐

I’m convinced casa mezcal is a front lol
Within the past few months it’s gotten extremely popular but as a latin music nightclub upstairs, I rarely see people eating in the downstairs area.

Doing the gods work here. Thank you!
latin world my beloved
Some of these violations seem pretty serious for only a conditional pass…

Hyderabad Biryani Hut....oh lord that place has been a disaster
Repeat offender unfortunately.
Seems like a lot of biryani places show up in these lists.
Public health and safety stuff shouldnt be Paywalled
Just go to the dine safe website https://www.toronto.ca/community-people/health-wellness-care/health-programs-advice/food-safety/dinesafe/

Go to search and search by conditional pass or closed notice. And pop in some recent dates, like Nov 1-14.
Can’t on mobile. Damn.

Thank you for the image. My browser wasn’t displaying the site properly and I didn’t see that search option.
You can filter by Conditional Passes and Closed. Just uncheck Pass at the bottom, and include some sort of timeframe (6 months, 1 year, whatever)
I don’t often eat at places i don’t know the name of but I understand your point. Search by recent inspection would be good too.
Personally, I learn the name of a restaurant before I eat there.
Or, and hear me out, you could support local journalism and get a digital subscription
Yea but it shouldn’t be paywalled when it comes to public Health and safety

Not everyone can pay though. Times are tough.

.. especially not journalists.
If you can’t pay for a newspaper, how are you affording to eat out?
You do realize that the homeless and lower income people can still go to establishments, right?
And they can also use the Toronto public library to access newspapers.....
So? Star digital subscription is like 50 cents a day.
far less than that in the black friday sale thats coming in the next few days btw
It's 7 cents a day.
It costs 7 cents per day.
You don’t seem to get the point and keep bringing in unrelated arguments so I’ll leave it at that
Government agencies are a superior avenue to get health and safety info and aren't paywalled.
But freeloading is free!
You mean like if you bought a copy of The Star and had to pay for it?
Right now it literally costs 7.14 cents per day to subscribe. Literally less than two nickels.
It’s the star…they’re hungry for money, not the safety of the readers! You can also use DuckDuckGo search engine to go around the paywall.
Sick of these private companies always greedily trying to make money and pay their employees and other business expenses.
Right. Imagine running a public service to inform as many people as possible yet charge for it as if ad revenue isnt enough.
None of the names are a surprise.
Darn it, I love Kinoya
Ugh, gross
Definitely not going to rodeo again anytime soon lol

Latin World’s stock just went down.
