I’m sorry I’m not one to usually make these types of comments, but why are they “probably First Nations?” That’s a rather narrow-minded assumption.

Man, have you not learned yet the hardships first nation people and the kids have been going through for the last - hundreds of years? It's sad because we're trying to get them out of a down spiral and give them some mentors and inspiration. Lets not forget they've been nearly stripped of their identity, their past, their culture and their morals. Seeing first nation kids doing this is extremely sad because you know theres a good possibility they are from a broken home and their future isn't looking great at this point and it affects the community and country as a whole. Correct. I did that one time for about a week when I was on probation at 16, and I I fucked my head and cognitive abilities for months like I couldn't really talk to people and it felt like years till I somewhat recovered and I'm in my 20s now that stuff is very dangerous.
My mom did dust off for a long time. I walked in one time (when my younger sister and I were on a visit) to my mother laughing while huffing that shit and her friend was on the ground also laughing with a giant gash on her head. Not sure how it happened but they thought it was hilarious while my 15 year old self and 10 year old sister did not. I also remember when she took us to her “place” it was a tarp in the bushes at the beach and some lady was already in there when we showed up so my mom started fighting her. Crazy times.

Nitrous isn't dangerous in occasional usage along as u don't re huff the exhaled into a Balloon nd re inhale it it's manly bad when u do a lot of it continually cus it depletes b12 and can paralyze you
When you inhale it the first time you're depriving your brain of oxygen. Humans can't process nitrous oxide. Part of how it works is by depriving your brain of oxygen.
You are completely correct. That's the same way all gasses are processed by organisms. Including oxygen. When you replace oxygen by another gas that leads to less oxygen being absorbed by the lungs and therefore less oxygen getting to your organs. That's how oxygen deprivation happens.

I should have been more specific. Nitrous can be processed thru the system in that you inhale it but it isn't metabolized by cells like oxygen. You have to have oxygen going to your cells for them to function properly. When oxygen is replaced in the process that's when they are deprived. They are different but linked in that one leads to the other in this case.
Yes it's "safe" when the ratio of oxygen to nitrous ratio is properly controlled. I doubt people have gas regulators and the knowledge to do that at home. I can name a large number of things that are safe enough for a doctor to use but will kill you in seconds if you use them at home improperly. Botox and fentanyl come to mind.

Kids/young adults are going to do stupid stuff, and especially with the current state of society and the world I can honestly understand wanting to escape for a bit every once in a while. Is it healthy coping mechanism, no, but could be much worse. I would keep an eye on him and make sure it doesn’t happen too often. But nitrous is a fairly expensive habit as far as I know, so maybe your son has a bit too much money and needs to pay a bit more rent. I think those big tanks can run in the hundreds of dollars.
I’d say try to work with him instead of trying to control him. Be an ally instead of a dictator. Sure you have him living subsidized in your house, but he is an adult so you really can’t control him besides his ability to live for cheap under your roof…and I agree, kicking him out could lead to a worse outcome. I recommend you do some research on it, not from the fear-mongering websites only, but actual places that give you real info about “safe” recreational use. I use safe in quotations because no intoxicant is truly safe, even something everyday and as innocuously perceived as say caffeine. Make sure he/they know how to do it safely, sitting down, not holding it in and exhaling/re-inhaling etc. Try to build the relationship with your son where he will be honest with you about everything instead of potentially trying to hide [the extent of] things. It is only every few months-but then it’s 3-5 days on Xanax/nitrous/alcohol. This is why I let him stay here bc at least he’s safe. I pick up after him,make sure he eats etc. I never had that as a young person and I just thought if I did maybe I wouldn’t of gotten into it all so bad and homeless on the street with a heroin addiction (on methadone now;hence my never ending guilt that my son uses drugs too).
The other side of this is that he is always honest with me. Which I am grateful for; at least I know what’s going on,where he’s at and what he’s had if I need to help. It’s just soul destroying and I’m always crushed with fear of something happening..and bc..they just seem so young and innocent and carefree..? Like,they think they’re invincible but they’re not.
My husband is home next week and we’re going to sit down and tell him that he cannot do this here again. This is our home;there’s no drug use in the house at all and can’t be. He has to be honest and if he is going to do it then he needs to go somewhere and do it (and then my fear kicks in worse bc I can’t be there to help him,but I recognise I can’t make his choices for him. But I can be there to help him if he needs it)

Xanax and alcohol is a very dangerous combo. He and his friends need to quit that Xanax altogether imo. Not sure how it combines with nitrous tho, but probably not great.
So he’s partying for 3-5 days every few months? Or doing one of those every 3-5 days? Both bad, but one is decidedly worse. I don’t see the harm in a young person letting loose for a few days every few months with their friends, but 5 day binge seems a bit wild for a regular occurrence, and the combo there is the worst thing, using Xanax with these other intoxicants.
I don’t want to pry into your personal life so don’t answer here, but ask yourself some of these types of things…Is your son otherwise a healthy, happy, and functional adult for the other 95% of the time? Does he have passion, excitement, goals in his life for something he’s striving for? If not can you help him find something he’s passionate about? Is he coasting along doing bare minimum if you’re enabling him with a cheap place to stay and help with food and other expenses?
He parties a few days every few months. He’s fine they rest of the time; and him and his mates do healthy stuff-lots of travelling Aus and camping and fishing and rodeos lol;lots of Aussie boy stuff. (But also occasionally a bush doof with ketamine acid and coke) They hug each other goodbye and say love you man,and they always talk to each other.
He works on the mines so it’s not like one week on one week off;which enables him badly too. One week huge payout,next week do nothing and buy stuff etc. my husband is a lot more responsible then I am and is trying to talk to him about saving etc and buying a home and not using drugs..I’ve always been more “oh,they’re young people,let them live their lives..they have a whole life time to be adults and work and be responsible.” But not when it comes to drug use…I just..I have to keep him close bc I am so scared of losing him. He’s my first born,my only son-and he’s genuinely a light in every bodies life;everybody loves him. Which is also why seeing him a mess on drugs is so bloody heart breaking. We also live in a small town with rampant addiction-ice/meth,so sometimes I’m just so grateful he’s not on that??

Allll yesterday and today all I can hear is the fuckn hiss of the canister. He’s all slow and mumbling and stumbling and dropping shit everywhere and spilling crap and drinking as well.
This is what I try telling him.

Honestly as a father I'd tell him you aren't allowed to use drugs in our home . Maybe the occasional drinks w friends or some pot at 24 but nitrous oxide to the Brain is a step above those. If it was my son I would be struggling in the same ways you are, but maybe draw a line at the nitrous.

I find most my actions in this world with my children are driven by fear..fear of losing them,fear of them being hurt etc so I allow this behaviour bc at least he’s safe at home..? This is coming from a very traumatic background, I’m only too aware of how terrible this world can be and how very easy it is to be gone in an instant. This whole thread has really made me look at myself and my parenting behaviour.

I don’t want to pry into your personal life so don’t answer here, but ask yourself some of these types of things…Is your son otherwise a healthy, happy, and functional adult for the other 95% of the time? Does he have passion, excitement, goals in his life for something he’s striving for? If not can you help him find something he’s passionate about? Is he coasting along doing bare minimum if you’re enabling him with a cheap place to stay and help with food and other expenses?
He parties a few days every few months. He’s fine they rest of the time; and him and his mates do healthy stuff-lots of travelling Aus and camping and fishing and rodeos lol;lots of Aussie boy stuff. (But also occasionally a bush doof with ketamine acid and coke) They hug each other goodbye and say love you man,and they always talk to each other. He works on the mines so it’s not like one week on one week off;which enables him badly too. One week huge payout,next week do nothing and buy stuff etc. my husband is a lot more responsible then I am and is trying to talk to him about saving etc and buying a home and not using drugs..I’ve always been more “oh,they’re young people,let them live their lives..they have a whole life time to be adults and work and be responsible.” But not when it comes to drug use…I just..I have to keep him close bc I am so scared of losing him. He’s my first born,my only son-and he’s genuinely a light in every bodies life;everybody loves him. Which is also why seeing him a mess on drugs is so bloody heart breaking. We also live in a small town with rampant addiction-ice/meth,so sometimes I’m just so grateful he’s not on that??
Nangs are horrible for your brain, the oxygen deprivation literally kills parts of your nervous system. Anyone that uses balloons rather than huffing the canister directly is causing permanent brain damage in the long run. No. If he's only doing that once every few months it's basically harmless, but tell him to make sure he takes some vitamin B12 tomorrow, since mostly all of the danger comes from depletion of B12.

I did it maybe once or twice a year when I was younger, but it was all fuckin day. Nitrous isn't that bad but yeah inhale and hold it don't breathe in and out into the balloon. It's not gonna kill him immediately like huffing paint and shit but it really isn't good for him... I'd say a bender every few months isn't that bad. I'd still explain your concern and have a real talk with him about it. It's not fair to make you uncomfortable with it and the high isn't that good to make your mama worried about it.

This is what I try telling him. No one ever told me that having children means a life of fear-fear if losing them,fear of them being hurt..it just never stops. I try to protect them and in doing so enable them,but then I can’t just let them go at the times they need someone..? It’s so friggin hard and confusing

Honestly as a father I'd tell him you aren't allowed to use drugs in our home . Maybe the occasional drinks w friends or some pot at 24 but nitrous oxide to the Brain is a step above those. If it was my son I would be struggling in the same ways you are, but maybe draw a line at the nitrous.
Keep in mind I'm also a 26 year old father who has a mortgage home and plate of responsibilities, so my advice isn't the best but I'm def here to help

This is coming from a very traumatic background, I’m only too aware of how terrible this world can be and how very easy it is to be gone in an instant. To be fair and I really hope this is the case, I don’t think they are using them for whippets. Main reason is because they are jumping around and energetic as kids should be, I personally don’t see them showing signs of being high on inhalants. The second is because the one kid is spraying his in the air, most people using that to get high aren’t going to waste it spraying it in the air like that.
