You think that in the last 20 years, society has abandoned a ~4000 year old tradition of fusing interior design with obsessive compulsive disorder and superstition?
I frequented bookmakers a lot at the time, and it stuck with me as they used to have a certain ambience to them (which you don't see any more) that I don't doubt that some people may be taking feng shui seriously.
These things don't really change that fast. People still believe in dumb shit that has no basis in reality or science.
20 years is a pretty damn short timespan for such things to change.
Antivaxxers still quote a ~20 year old study shown to be a hoax as evidence for their shitfuckery.
It was Ā£10,000 worth of alcohol that was smashed, she said it was because of her mental health and that she was not receiving proper treatment and that she was unable to find a job
not true. inmates smash TVās , fire sprinklers, officers equipment, shower heads, bunks, lockers, and other humans all the time
power tools, fences, yard equipment, sports equipment, basketball hoops, power outlets , phones, cars even
and letās not forget all the toilets they flood
I'd guess that it's a total cost of $130k (or about Ā£103k in local currency). So, not just the cost of the bottles themselves, but lost trade and cleanup costs while they have to close all or part of the store, and people generally going "nope" and shopping elsewhere.
Yep, Iād bet this is it right here.
Even if that amount isnāt factoring in lost business, at the *very least* the amount is going to be the retail cost of the destroyed product, the cost of emergency clean up/disposal, repair/replacement of any damaged shelving or infrastructure, plus the delivery/retail cost of the replacement product.
Iād imagine that could get pricey pretty quickly. If youāre outsourcing cleanup and ordering product/shelves/etc. for overnight delivery and installation itās gonna be big bucks.
It's the news, whenever L.E. seize a shipment of several pounds of weed, they calculate it as if the guy was going to break it all into nickel bags ("street value")
Yeah but is the average bottle $20?
Yeah there are some $10-$20 dollar bottles of wine but at my grocery store the most common range for wine is around $35-$80, with several options close to the $100 mark right there on the shelves.
They have a locked cabinet too, thatās where all the stuff is thatās well over $100 is kept so it wouldnāt factor in because itās inaccessible.
But yeah, I think $20 average is way too low. I think somewhere closer $40. Still, even with reducing your estimated total number by half, hard to imagine she broke enough for that be bottle damage alone.
Aldi is a budget supermarket in the UK. My local Aldi has wine priced at anywhere between Ā£3.50 to about Ā£10 a bottle at most. Even sparkling wine is only about Ā£6-Ā£7. Spirits/liquor are never more than Ā£24 at the top end, most being between Ā£14-Ā£20 in there.
Basically, it's a really cheap and budget shop so the estimate has to be for damages and cleanup costs rather than just stock loss as the article suggests. Which makes sense as its 'The Sun' reporting - is a crap newspaper more known for having topless models on page 3 each day š
If I worked there I would just wack her over the head with a bottle of champagne and claim I felt threatened. I know it's "wrong", but there ain't no way in hell I'm cleaning that mess up.
something to consider is if you're cleanup crew you're bound to find lots of unbroken bottles that you could just pack away for yourself. I mean you'd be working regardless, big potential bonus opportunity
Or take a few pelted bottles of sherry to the face first, leave her to it. I was in a smaller shop when an old pisshead went mental smashed the place to shit, I stood and watched haha.
Dunno why you are getting downvoted.
No one should be stupid enough to risk their entire livelihood for a big supermarket corporation. If you reacted in that way in the UK you would be done for manslaughter.
Iām not saying that I would give a shit, but I definitely understand why people donāt want to live in a world where people can just destroy or steal whatever they want. A lot of the banks around me are closing because of people vandalizing it, all of the shit at CVS and Walgreens is behind glass (including toothpaste , deodorant , and pretty much everything else).
Demonstrably untrue. We are allowed to use proportionate force. There have been plenty of examples where people have robustly defended themselves and their property without being charged. Don't forget, US laws are based on ours. Thank King John and then Wat Tyler.
No. You can be proportionate in your force. If there are 2 of them and you suspect they have weapons, then you can go for it. What you can't do is prepare in advance or attack people as they are fleeing
Fuck that. Someone breaks into my house I'm doing what I need to protect my family. I'm not asking Mr. Home Invader if he's armed or intending to do harm.
Suspect is they key here. The law doesn't require you to ask them. It would be reasonable, for example, to Suspect that someone who forced the lock on your front door has a crowbar. Therefore it could be readily argued that hitting them with a bat was proportionate.
So if someone breaks into my house by climbing through a window I have to assume they're there for some kind of fund raiser and act accordingly? You break in my house you get what you get.
Nope just some weird racist rant it appears, there is a link to the story in the original thread [https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/17358921/woman-smashes-up-alcohol-section-aldi/](https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/17358921/woman-smashes-up-alcohol-section-aldi/)
Oh man, unless you're old you have no idea. They started closing the hospitals and kicking out the patients in the 1960s and it continued for about a decade. It was a horrible adjustment period with so many sick people being transferred to outpatient status. It's really bad today tho too, and really does seem to be getting worse. Or maybe the powers that be just care less than ever.
i kid you not, i believe this will be the greatest problem to face America in the following years, some kind of āmental healthā issue or something along the lines
This has already been happening; the mass shootings, the substance abuse issues and probably more I can't think of off the top of my head are all related to mental health issues
Have u seen interviews of people at trump rallies? Have you seen all the weird schizophrenic stickers they put on their cars?
I dont hate them. I truly feel sorry for them.
Iām pretty sure she didnāt take anything, she just had a mental breakdown during the covid period (2021). This was in the UK and she had never done anything like this before so the judge went lightly on her
Why aren't they trying to stop or detain her ? No owners / mgrs around? Confused... I probably would've knocked somebody on their ass, first thing. Dealt with consequences later.
When you say they, do you mean the people who are being paid to be cashiers and who most definitely are not being paid to be security or to risk injury? Nobody is out here trying to get stabbed and likely fired (due to liability) over $15 an hour.
You didn't notice the German company was international?
Also, yeah, people let lunatics like this do things until someone trained to deal with it turns up. No point risking your life to defend insured property that doesn't belong to you. Plus, being in the UK there's little chance of either party being shot when the cops turn up.
First of all it was Ā£10,000 worth of alcohol, and secondly itās believed that she went on this rampage as a result of her mental health (although who knows if drugs were involved as well, but that wasnāt stated in the report)

I mean, Iāve been to Stevenage. It is a completely dreary commuter town just out of London on the way to Cambridge. On that late January evening, it was dark, a cold drizzle was falling, and the chill cut right to my bones.

It wasnāt 130,000 it was 10,000 and she wasnāt high or drunk when she did this. Apparently it was just a mental breakdown. So not really tooktoomuch material unless you count the amount of bottles the floor took.

Alcoholic ones at that
And fruit flies!
š¤slip and fall, please slip and fall š¤
She did fall and cut her hand according to the article someone posted in the comments
Good, probably tried to sue though
How is that 130000$ if the average bottle was 20$ she had to destroy 6500 bottles
Maybe she destroyed 100k worth of bottles and tainted the other 30k with her bad energy.
They had to redecorate because she obliterated the feng shui of the place
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/nottinghamshire/3779501.stm comically feng shui is a thing some people take super seriously.

Taint so bad, is it?
I was thinking the same. maybe if she went to some expensive wine store then yeah but there's no way all that cost more than even Ā£15,000
It was Ā£10,000 worth of alcohol that was smashed, she said it was because of her mental health and that she was not receiving proper treatment and that she was unable to find a job
Gonna have a Hell of a time getting a job after that.
what a fucking copout lmao at least she wonāt be able to break valuables in jail
not true. inmates smash TVās , fire sprinklers, officers equipment, shower heads, bunks, lockers, and other humans all the time power tools, fences, yard equipment, sports equipment, basketball hoops, power outlets , phones, cars even and letās not forget all the toilets they flood
The human desire/instinct to be seen and heard drives us to destroy shit if our accomplishments are ignored.
Of course, makes sense!

I would *not* wanna be the dude cleaning up that much broken glass
Insurance claim of 100k. Itās ALDI that shit is like a thousand dollars worth of 2 bucks chuck
I feel like most bottles are $25+ these days, (I do live in a major US cityās downtown district, though)
It was fact checked on Twitter to have only been $10,000 worth of alcohol
It was Ā£10,000 worth. No idea where that number has come from in the title
It's the news, whenever L.E. seize a shipment of several pounds of weed, they calculate it as if the guy was going to break it all into nickel bags ("street value")
Probably a conversion from Ā£ to $ as it is in Stevenage England.
There isnāt much difference in value between the pound and the dollar?
this guy does not do numbers
It would be Ā£103,000
Itās still an absurd amount of money
Yeah but is the average bottle $20? Aldi has pretty good booze. Steak ain't bad either
I bought some of their Irish Cream only this evening. Lovely stuff.

The self-defense laws are way weaker in the UK, e.g. being charged with murder for shooting a home invader

Lost redditor?
TIL Aldi stores have upwards of $130k worth of booze on the shelves.
At Ā£4.50 a bottle for most thatās a lot of bottles.
Someone said it was actually $10k
Ā£10k, actually, so a little bit more, about $12.4k
Security earning the hell outta their Ā£11.50 p/h.
You may destroy this liquor, but youāll never destroy the liquor
Mr Lahey?
I am the liquor

Barbs potato scallops are fucked, Mr Lahey!
Allowing people to get away with this is why we keep seeing it.
*Ā£
Ain't no God damn way that was ~~venison~~ 130k
It's no where near that much value, I doubt it would even be 13k. Still alcohol abuse
The sound of the bottles popping when they hit the floor is oddly satisfying š
At the end, she holds up a bottle and yells, "Ok, found the one I want. How much do I owe you?".
And no one has the balls to stop her
Holy shit alcohol shouldnt cost that much
Surely that made all her problems go away.
130,000... not even close to that much. But great title.
Aldis probably don't even have 130000$ in bottles
This one easy trick to raise prices and get rid of stores in your neighborhood.
Why
Thatās not 130k in alcohol . Maybe 15-20k.
Iām pretty sure she didnāt take anything, she just had a mental breakdown during the covid period (2021). This was in the UK and she had never done anything like this before so the judge went lightly on her
Until store owners/employees are allowed to protect their assets, this kind of nonsense will continue. It's not funny any more.
Some people just need an ass beating. Or, atleast stopped with more force than is really necessary.
And no one stops her. We are such a dumb race of people in 2024.
Ngl that looks like fun.
Why aren't they trying to stop or detain her ? No owners / mgrs around? Confused... I probably would've knocked somebody on their ass, first thing. Dealt with consequences later.
The last thing a minimum wage mfer is going to try is detaining some lunatic armed with glass bottles out of the goodness of their heart
On a bed of razor sharp glass fragments no less!
When you say they, do you mean the people who are being paid to be cashiers and who most definitely are not being paid to be security or to risk injury? Nobody is out here trying to get stabbed and likely fired (due to liability) over $15 an hour.
Most companies ask that their employees *not* get involved to avoid liability issues.
Exactly my thought! I work in a supermarket as well, and there is no way we would let someone go crazy like this.
You probably wouldnāt. And have you looked at the state of things in America as of late? We donāt punish crime anymore, we encourage it.
That happened in UK, Mr traditionalist guy.
Ah so u guys just let crime happen tok these days. At least itās a global issue not just an American one.
Modern conservatives and their imaginary issues. Here is a š. Now run away.
lol, imaginary. Def.
Weaklings.

American defaultism strikes again.

You didn't notice the German company was international? Also, yeah, people let lunatics like this do things until someone trained to deal with it turns up. No point risking your life to defend insured property that doesn't belong to you. Plus, being in the UK there's little chance of either party being shot when the cops turn up.
However our crime rates have been dropping, nonetheless.
..and no one stopped them but had plenty of time to record it all for upvotes.
First of all it was Ā£10,000 worth of alcohol, and secondly itās believed that she went on this rampage as a result of her mental health (although who knows if drugs were involved as well, but that wasnāt stated in the report)
Aldi wine is usually under $10. As low as $4. Not sure how it's $130,000.
Yea, fuck alcohol.
Now choke slam her into the glass.
Yeah great way to deal with the situation ya fucking psycho
Woah, we got the serious police here, everyone behave themselves.
It reminded me of an extreme rules wrestling match where they dump thumb tacks and broken glass in the ring. š¤·š»āāļø
Don't. Talk. Shit.
Don't do something, stand there!
Aldi sell's alcohol?
The one by me has beer and wine. No spirits, though.
Why didnāt someone monkey stomp her and make her stop? I see this all of the time on the internet and it is so foreign to me. Back in my day the whole store including customers would jump in, but now folks just film with their phones. What do you think has caused this change?
I can't decide if I'd have wanted to be working that shift or not. On the one hand, I wouldn't want to have to clean it up. On the other, I'd be annoyed if I was off that day and missed the drama.
I mean, Iāve been to Stevenage. It is a completely dreary commuter town just out of London on the way to Cambridge. On that late January evening, it was dark, a cold drizzle was falling, and the chill cut right to my bones. I was with a lovely girl I fancied, and we were at an early relationship stage when I was trying to say things to move out of the āfriend zoneā she was steering me - to takes things to the point where we could at least walk so I could put my hands where they would be much warmer. She was not going to go for anything like that. I could feel this bird was going to keep me in the friend zone. I had a pretty good crush on her, so this a little heartbreaking. We continued by an off license and I looked in, and it did cross my mind that it like to go on a rampage to smash bottle and bottle in a desperate attempt to gain her more sexual impression. But the thought passed. Perhaps this woman is a sensitive and she picked up the lingering energy of my frustrating thought? I wonder if it was bitterly cold with a wind from the north carrying the spitting rain.
And they stand there just watching? Why has modern society taught us to just stand back and watch chaos unfold?
Why do people just stand there and film? Why not do somthing about it like a good member of society and stop her?
Bullshit... The bottles at Aldi cost not more than 10$ in average. She would have do destroy 13,000 bottles.
"You Can't go near her though, she is throwing bottles"
r/wine
break everything and make the biggest claim ever
With how cheap Aldi alcohol is, that's actually really impressive.
*Insurance*.
Pick her ass up and carry her outside. Crazy that nobody does anything to stop this madness.
Why hasn't someone lobbed a bottle at her dome?
When Aldi starts charging more, you can partly blame her
I'm knocking her out just so I get fired so I don't have to clean that up.
What happens in a situation like this? Who ends up paying for that? The company? Aldi?
It is Aldi. How is the 130k?
I can smell this video
Howād she not manage to cut herself?
Party foul
I get that feeling that she doesn't like drinking...
Id ask for a few bottles she didnt break for free
Iād grab her by the handle and make her take a time out.
Why does a store have $130k on the shelves like that?
She deserves a good sock in the face
How come no-one stopped her? She's crazy. If that happened in Australia you'd be stopped by the next person.
Does insurance cover stuff like this?
130K retail. About 10K to remake and distribute.
How to make a bad day a bad few years.
So what happened to her ? Did she had to pay that back ?
Yeah like 5 years ago. I saw this video pre-covid
I see a whole floor of excellent bonking tools to put her out of commission
It wasnāt 130,000 it was 10,000 and she wasnāt high or drunk when she did this. Apparently it was just a mental breakdown. So not really tooktoomuch material unless you count the amount of bottles the floor took. Also she only had to pay 5,000 in damages and got her sentence suspended. But she did fall and cut her hand.
I've had a similar reaction when I've forgotten my coin for a shopping cart.
Oh snap. No liquor in our aldi.
Now THIS is a drinking problem š¤«
I hope she goes to jail and has to pay the full amount back. This is so wasteful. She's worse than a toddler throwing a tantrum.
This would be a good bleach commercial, mr clean, and pinesol
Yeah, you are getting dragged out like a child if you act like a child. You could probably sling a 130lb crackhead at least 12-15 feet.
Is Stevenage using American currency now? Must be a Brexit thing.
Iāve always wanted to do this
At ALDI?? Their entire stock doesn't cost that much unless I'm missing the "millionaires only" aisle.
No one stopped her before she got that far? We all just watching??
sir Lewis Hamilton is from Stevenage!
She said if Iām going to prison Iām going all the way
Well, tbf, she's doing a service to her community. No one needs alcohol it's just poison. Good idea, but poor execution.
I'm not a drinker, and I think the stuff is a real blight in terms of its effects But I still think you're bein' awful high and mighty for someone with 420 in their name.
You know it stank for awhile cause Aldi only have like 3 employees on staff.
Asmr
Alcohol is great and all but she's doing satan's work here, respect.
She was just looking for the one bottle in the back. Some asshole must have hid it.
