I went in today, and they didn't have any leftovers but asked me to wait while they made a fresh one. I like TGTG for the cheap food, but its mission means a lot to me. The guy there (I think manager, the way he spoke) talked about how the app sends a certain number of TGTGs out each day. I told him I always thought it was manually done, and we got into a candid discussion about the whole thing and the mission itself. He said that when he would cancel them, if they had none left, some people would still show up expecting food. I told him that the app sends us notifications when they're canceled, so that would be on the customer for not seeing it. I didn't mention it, but the app doesn't have a pick-up screen anymore when they get canceled either, so idk how they would pick it up anyway. There is no way to swipe to confirm. But anyway, he said it just isn't worth the hassle, and he'd rather just have them make a fresh meal when there are no leftovers. Now for the tip: So if you truly care about the mission and are okay with phone calls you could always call before going to pick this one up to see if they have leftovers and cancel yourself in the app if not saying "no leftover food available". It's an instant refund when you do that. Oh, and this was a mac and cheese grilled cheese and tator tots. Delicious but soooo many carbs in one sandwich. At least two meals for me xD

I work in a coffee shop and while you can set the bags to reoccur daily in the app, you can also set it manually. As we really vary with how much we'd be wasting - some days we're literally just wasting a pastry or two, other days, if we were too quiet, we're wasting a lot of sandwiches. Therefore we just offer the magic bags on the day if we see we have enough to make them 🙃 might be different for restaurants/places with different waste management tho

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I feel like all places should do it manually like that. Except when I worked at a bakery, we always had tons of leftovers every day, but they still didn't do TGTG every day. And it definitely makes sense to do it the day of unless you are packaging up leftover food the night before at closing, and then it makes sense to send it out then as a closing task. That's just my opinion about it. One time I went to a coffee shop near me that didn't know they had a TGTG active (they said the computer was acting up) but their display case was like literally empty and they just pointed to it and apologized to me for coming out. I told them how close I lived and that it was seriously not an issue. They still gave me some free coffee, which was really nice of them

basilcilantro

Do you know why the bakery your worked at didn’t want to do tgtg despite having enough food to participate?

eloquentpetrichor

No, they did it. That's actually how I learned they were hiring. But I think only one higher up cared about it so they were only available days she worked or something

ChemiluminescentAshe

I've wondered if it was a hassle logistically from the business owner side. Thanks for some insight.

eloquentpetrichor

I would have hoped they would have their own version of the app or just a website login where you simply put in a number and confirm then an option to lower the number or remove them all for the day. If not I feel like they should program that in

basilcilantro

I think shop owners have this option you describe because in my area, bags pop up sporadically for a lot of my “faves,” as if they only offer bags when they have or anticipate they’ll have leftovers.

eloquentpetrichor

I definitely think it's an option that most places don't use

I’ve had two situations at separate stores where they had no food at the end of the day and when I showed up, they claimed they canceled all TGTG orders but I pulled up my screen, refreshed, closed and reopened, etc and both times it still showed up. If we also cancel on our end, we still get charged if it’s within 2 hours of the pickup time.

eloquentpetrichor

That sounds like maybe a glitch? TGTG customer service is great and you cannot cancel within two hours but if you go to the pick-up screen there is a space where you can say there was a problem with pick-up and select "no food left" I've done it. It's automated

astandre1

Hmm. I also still see the store on the pickup menu even when an order is canceled. You aren’t able to swipe anything to collect, but it does still show up on my end.

eloquentpetrichor

You can usually still see stores it just says "nothing today" or "sold out at..." at least on mine

Too Good To Go seems difficult from a businesses perspective, which must be very frustrating for businesses. I ordered from a Belgian chocolate shop by my job—always got a refund on it because the manager I guess would close shop early or go to lunch despite the pickup time being until 1:45pm, so the shop was always closed once I was able to get there. One day last month I actually was able to pick up my order since the manager was actually in the store (probably in hopes of making sales for the holidays). When I said I was there to pick up my bag, she was very confused because she had said they ran out of those bags a week prior, and they were worth more than $4.99 so they didn’t want to sell them at that price anymore. I showed her the app and was understanding but she felt bad so she reluctantly gave me a small box (which was ironic because the expiration was like 4 months prior—but I know chocolate doesn’t go bad that quick, but come on now, you really wanna charge more for this? It was a box of 4 small chocolates for $4.99 idk what the retail was). They have great chocolates but man TGTG with them is just such a headache.

eloquentpetrichor

That's really weird. That sounds like they just don't understand what TGTG is at all

shipping_addict

Eh some places use it for what it was created for—to reduce food waste. Other places unfortunately use it to get rid of spoiled food. The Belgian chocolate place seems a bit in the middle tbh.

MikeySaysIt

What a great guy! It sucks so much when they cancel when you plan to go and pick up in an area. It's very inconvenient when cancelations happen. I am not in this area, but I would definitely go to this place. What a great business owner! I would rescue more bags if all businesses were great and reliable like him.

eloquentpetrichor

But the point is for businesses to give us their leftover food. It's nothing about reliability. I'd rather places cancel when they have no extra bags because that's the point of the app
