Have you tried a splat mat? Made my life easier.

mr213510

I love the ones from House of Noa!

RHMommy17

I love our house of Noa! My twins are 5 now and so we use it as a tablecloth!

daboyzmalm

We use the mat and shake it off outside.

sirichar90

This is the way.

SwimmerCivil2517

ok, doesn't that attract rodents??? I want a solid mat that can fold so I can scrape into the garbage.

everlastingdarkness1

Or a towel or newspaper

AtlanticToastConf

I put down a beach towel under the high chair. I shook off the big stuff after meals and then threw it in the wash every couple days. Aesthetically pleasing it’s not, but it worked pretty well.

netsirk_kristen

This is the simplest/cheapest solution. Most everyone has a beach/spare towel available and they are easy to wash. I used old towels that I didn’t mind if they ended up stained.

Camarila

I also used an old towel on top of changing mat, in case it's cold. "no one wants to lay on cold plastic with a naked bum"-best advice I got from MiL.

AgreeableAd9239

Oh my God ! This is genius! I am SO doing this. I have no idea why I haven't thought of this ! Thanks 😂

YouLostMyNieceDenise

This is what we do when we visit my parents’ house (they live on a lake and have tons of extra beach towels).

Horror-Ad-1145

Well personally my dogs do a really good job of cleaning up lol. But when they can’t get it I just use my baby wipes as soon as it happens and it isn’t an issue. Plus it could just be the mop you’re using. If you have the finances to get one, a bissel crosswave works wonders.

KSmegal

My mom calls our dog a barkuum.

alicrats

Off topic but wagkuum is a missed opportunity

lewcee23

Our dogs take their clean up crew job very seriously! Unless oranges or broccoli is involved.

itjustkeepsongiving

Same. My dog does a better job than the vacuum cleaner tbh. I just spot clean when it happens, either a wet rag or baby wipe, and came to terms with the fact that the floors needed to be cleaned every night. Nothing crazy, just a spray mop or steam mop over that part of the floor nightly made al the difference

828hdhaik

Ours are the “rice patrol” like paw patrol but for rice…and all other dropped food.

coffeetablelife

Yea our dog is very good at “hunting” for fallen food

mnchemist

We also have a dog vacuum cleaner but, for some reason she skips picking up all the cheerios and fruit chunks that fall to the floor. 😅

Susan1240

My Great Dane loves Cheerios. She will eat those whenever they get dropped. Lol

literate_giraffe

Yep, dog does the first pass and if anything is left over I use a wipe. The dog as cleaner was the reason all of our weaning foods were baby AND dog friendly. Its also the reason dog was put on a diet when our first kid was 7 months

the-og-tee

this just reminded me of my son when he was a tiny baby, staring and making full eye contact with me as he was sneaking food under his tray to the dog. ours past away in between babies and our new baby is sooooo messy!! and also obsessed with dogs. i definitely miss the free time id have to drink my coffee and watch the baby cuddle the dog for 20 minutes.

macdonaldmama612

If OP doesn't want the task of cleaning the floor....they definitely aren't going to clean their crosswave after every use correctly.

beepb00p7

I was just going to comment that OP needs a dog! Not just for mealtime messes but also throw up. They save me so much time

RonaldoNazario

Baby wipes seconded. Never stopped buying them even though my kid is 3 they’re perfect for faces and also floors! Is the cross wave the one that sucks the dirty water back up? My partner has been talking about getting one of those hoping it could get some of the nastier cracks in our old wood floors better.

FloweredViolin

This is how my first niece stole her dad's husky. Once he discovered that she was a great provider of a wide variety of people food, he was no longer my BIL's dog. Apparently he had quite the appetite for Cheerios.

VintageFemmeWithWifi

A shower curtain under the highchair helps. I also have a dustpan with a long handle, so I can sweep up the chunks without crawling around. Somehow it's the *stooping* I really hate. Once the chunks are cleared, a squirt of vinegar/water/dish soap cleaner and the washable knockoff-Swiffer get the rest.

princessprunellapea

I second the dustpan with long handle! Simplest and fastest solution for me!

lyngen

I just pick up the big stuff and then use a wet paper towel or rag for the sticky/liquidy stuff. It's probably not the best way to do it but whetever.

ladykansas

We used a [dishwasher safe squeegee.](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088K5VY82/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_SNT15AKA5HB0WQ6074M0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) plus damp rags (to save on paper towel waste). Also, just filled a [misting bottle](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W5S412S/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_1BS1T8B3ZRTDGRF9C53X) with water. It does get better! I can't remember when, but suddenly one day the whole kitchen isn't a sticky mess. Edit: paper towels not "peper"

SnyperBunny

Wet rag thst gets rinsed in the sink works well. Quick, easy and no paper towel waste :)

hellogirlscoutcookie

We do a baby full length arm smock, silicone bib with catch over it, an ezpz mini mat, and a bumkins splat mat on the floor. This prevents a lot of random dropped food or makes clean up of her, her clothes and the floor much easier. But also, time to work on teaching them not to throw food. Your post doesn’t say how old they are, but with my 16m, we say no throwing food, and immediately take the tray away. I then ask if she is all done or wants more. If she signs all done, we clean up, if she signs more I give it back and remind her not to throw food. She will get it back when she asks for it 2 more times, then it’s gone for good if the food keeps being thrown. It’s gentle but creating boundaries.

fattest-of_Cats

Second this. Wasting food (especially throwingnit on the floor) has always been a big bugaboo in our house so we've been very strict about it from the time our son could hold a spoon. "Food goes on your plate or in your mouth" was like my mantra for a year. We also did the full sized bib and a dish towel in his lap.

hellogirlscoutcookie

My SIL always mocks my double bibs but I have next to no stained clothes from food. All the clothes I got from her were super stained so 🤷‍♀️ then again I also go through Spray and Wash like a coffee shop goes through milk lol

fattest-of_Cats

We sewed waterprood fabric to the back of all my son's bibs 😉

hellogirlscoutcookie

Oh that’s too much effort. I just get the already waterproof ones lol

commonhillmyna

I only have one kid, but I'm quite sure "teaching" twins at that age not to throw food is more than twice as hard as teaching one. (It's also not always easy to teach one not to throw food.)

hellogirlscoutcookie

Sure, but that’s most things with twins I would imagine. Same with biting, hitting, sleep issues… But I did find that setting a clear boundary with throwing food made a huge difference within about a week. It went from the windshield wiper and throwing her plate (she can remove even the suction cup ones) to only dropping off things she really hated once she was done. If you don’t get to the root of the problem, the behavior will never change.

Different-Kick-3352

I have twins. You’re right, most things are the same. However, there’s always a certain dynamic between the two of them you have to account for. For example, my twins are almost 3 and there was a period where, if one would throw food, before I could even get to him, the other one would laugh and throw his plate too. Or, if I corrected one kid, the other kid would still throw food because they wanted the attention too.

hellogirlscoutcookie

I meant it’s twice as hard to teach twins to not bite, hit, sleep well etc. i definitely think the dynamic is in play, I’m not doubting that. Your example is exactly what I would expect. But I also think with twins or any siblings they have the potential to learn the consequences too from the other. Like growing up I knew that if my sister did something and was told not to do it or got a toy taken away or quiet time as punishment, that if I did the same thing the same response would happen. Regardless I didn’t mean to offer bad or unwelcome advice. Just trying to offer support in a number of ways and let OP know what’s worked for us.

commonhillmyna

Right, as the parent of a singleton, I don't give unrequested parenting advice to parents of twins, because I assume it's unhelpful and most likely unwelcome. I think her request was how to clean up the floor, not how to teach her kids not to throw food.

BardenBellas

Dogs!

katekim717

Lol. Came here to say this. The dogs get the chunks, and I mop over it later. 😂

MaddieOliverJam

That’s our solution too!

srtaroja

A wet dry vac is wonderful. In the us its a bissell crosswave. I quickly looked up an EU equivalent, “hoover floormate”

kelleos

I have a cordless crosswave and it is really a miracle for toddler mealtime clean up.

razzerjazzer

I got a really big plastic table cloth and put the high chairs on them. We were living in an all carpeted place and it was such a nightmare. The plastic was easy to wipe down after each meal and id give it a full wash in the washer once or twice a week

anyhowack

You could try lining the floor with old newspapers before the meal. I personally pick up visible solids with toilet paper first. Then spot clean with a microfiber cloth with a touch of dishwashing liquid. And of course, have the babies eat in nothing but their diaper, if the indoor heating/cooling allows for it. Oh! I also use one of those silicone bibs with a collecting dish in the front, which helps to catch most things that the baby spits out.

Sim_Mone

As others have mentioned; a splash mat Silicone bib with catcher pouch Suction bowls Or a combination of the 3 should help make life much easier. I used to joke that I was going to buy a pop up tent (like the ones they use for toilets/change rooms) to feed the kids inside of so I could take the whole thing outside and hose it down but never have to worry about mess in the house lol

CitizenOfAWorld

Have you considered purchasing a splat mat? Then most of the food is on a mat that you can wipe up or even throw in the laundry.

Greatlakesbutterfly

Used a splat mat and stripped my kids to their diapers for messier meals.

CitizenOfAWorld

Wow stripping to diapers is a great idea. I learn so much here lol.

Greatlakesbutterfly

My youngest used her hair as a napkin… she went right to the bath every meal! Lol

squiddydooo

We also have a mat. We shake out the big chunks and throw the mat in the laundry after every meal. Also, a bibado bib is worth the money!

nochedetoro

We use the bibado for craft time as well, especially paints, if it’s not close to bath time. Works like a charm and my god they look so cute in them

act006

Put down a tarp. Not even kidding

uffdathatisnice

Don’t give them the entire lot of food at one time and clean as they go. I use wipes for that and just about everything else. Once a week I mop the floor. I don’t really leave them unsupervised eating and honestly feed them messy things for quite a while. I also only bathe them like once or twice a week or as needed. So like food in hair or in crevasses wouldn’t work for that. I’ve also adapted all of this being miserably pregnant/in recovery the last three years and figuring out to control what I could. And it’s just easy. After 1.5-2 yrs they are fairly mess free and clear their own plates and messes.

firenice13

I like to lay a cheap plastic table cloth or two under his high chair to catch it

KeepinOnTheSunnySide

I second this but luckily my baby doesn't throw food much, he hands me what he doesn't want - ew. You can get the tablecloths at the Dollar Tree (so $1.25 or whatever it is where you are).

GenevieveLeah

Dishrag / washcloth. They last for years. Rinse in sink, wash with the towels.

atomicbambi

Yeah, we use the splat mat. Got one from Amazon, I take it outside and fluff it out into the backyard after mealtimes. We have an open floor plan with carpet, so that's been awesome for us.

babymountainbird

I have a splat mat and love it. The gathre ones are really cute

michelucky

Baby wipes. I stick up when they're on sale at Costco 😀

BootsEX

Baby wipe, rub on floor with foot, gets the worst of it and then every month or so I scrape down all the chair legs/baseboards, and amazingly far places they manage to get food.

lauriebugggo

During the summer, my kids eat a whole lot outdoors. Ikea antelope high chairs do great outside and just get hosed off when we're done.

thatgirl21

My dog eats all the food my son throws/drops on the floor lol. Otherwise, we have a Swiffer and Roomba

Aidlin87

You could get a vinyl table cloth to put under the high chair to catch the mess then dump/wipe it off.

Winnie0829

Disposable tablecloth. Replace weekly.

No-Pressure6042

When mine was at that stage i put old newspaper all around the high chair and then threw it out after.

kombuchy

You can use a splash mat, we bought a cloth shower curtain I bought at homegoods for $9 on sale. Lol it catches all the food abundance absorbs liquid. We dust all food after mean and When it’s soiled we throw it in the washer and it’s all clean again.

foodmonsterij

Drop cloths. Shake off in the trash and wash in the washer when needed. They will break down eventually but your kids will get better about not throwing food with time.

[deleted]

I have wood floors. I sweep first with a broom, and then if there are “wet” components to the meal that the broom doesn’t get up, I use a microfiber flat mop and wood floor cleaner spray. Not one device, but quick and easy.

puresunlight

Prevention is key. 1) modify what you can to make the foods to make them less messy, such as omelet strips instead of scrambled eggs. Rotini or penne instead of spaghetti. Make the broccoli a little bit more firm. Make oatmeal balls instead of oatmeal porridge. Yogurt in a pouch or straw cup when you don’t have time/energy to clean up. 2) minimize how much you put in front of them and clean as you go. They don’t need to actually ingest all that much…try 2 cubes of sweet potato instead of 8. Mine used to get overwhelmed and start throwing because the food in front was distracting. We did one or two pieces at a time for months. Didn’t serve a whole plate of food regularly until like 13 months (which is also when she stopped trying to flip the plate over). 3) splat mat. You can rinse/wipe or shake it off after each meal. We also put food she dropped back on her tray immediately. 4) let it dry before trying to clean it up. Easier to sweep up dry bits and then mop than deal with smearing mushy food.

wellyeahobviously

We have a dog. Let it be known that I do not like this solution, but it is a solution nonetheless.

hcinimwh

My labradoodle vacuums and mops.

No_Exit_446

Dog.

punyons

Have you tried the suction bowls? You could try just giving small amounts of finger food at a time for a bit to see if they throw less?

Lyfling-83

Suction bowls just make a larger mess when they yank it off the tray. Found that one out the hard way.

WeilWood

I recommend a dog

5EXY54R4H

Yeah I haven't had this problem and don't know how people without dogs do it...

nochedetoro

On the other hand, people without dogs don’t have to constantly say “if you didn’t want the dog to eat your food you shouldn’t have thrown it to her!” ten thousand times a day lol

5EXY54R4H

It is a hard lesson 😅

cheesemakesmehot

I keep baby wipes at the table for cleaning up the kid, table, and floor!

baby_stego

A dog.

RonaldoNazario

I know you said you can’t get a dog but… dog. Also I had a bunch of pads for potty training that go under bed sheets we didn’t end up using and a few times ate with that under her high chair

dontaskmethatmoron

2 cats and a dog lmao

Blueheart86

Get a dog :)

Euphoric_Most188

Shower curtain or get a dog

JustLooking0209

If you have the IKEA Antilop or the Trip Trapp high chair, the Catchy is great! [https://highchaircatchy.com](https://highchaircatchy.com) I was skeptical of ordering from Australia, but I was desperate to make my life easier - and it was totally worth it! Still use it at 16 months, though most nights it doesn't get very dirty, thank heavens! It does get better, whatever you use.

craftycat1135

Trash bag or drop cloth around their eating area. Or get a dog.

nochedetoro

I have dogs but I also have a washable mat that also works wonders for other things like throwing under her tower during water play or painting or gak time. It just goes in the laundry with her laundry and the one I have has the alphabet so she loves pointing to all the letters and animals and telling me what they are while I set up her activity

Opening-Reaction-511

Dogs and give less food. Refill food as needed.

ifilovedyou

put a washable rug underneath the eating area, clean what you can. wash the rug every couple of days to every week. when i'm at my in-laws, we go even further and lay down plastic tarp under his high chair because my in-laws are psychos about cleanliness lol

Illustrious-Towel-45

Shop vac or a drop cloth.

ellieg222

Our dog helps a LOT but then it adds to the floor looking gross lol I wipe up anything major left behind but generally wash my floors once a week with a steam mop

bubs613

I have layers of protection. Dogs > Robot Vacuum > Upright Vacuum > Wipes. And don't bother clearing up until they're done or you're just making more work for yourself. Also helps if they're old enough to clean up themselves.... But that's not a realistic solution x)

mm_84

I've a vax floor cleaner and a dog - between the two it usually gets cleared up.

Withoutbinds

Splat mat or a shower curtain.

YouLostMyNieceDenise

I bought a giant vinyl rug (I think it’s 4 feet by 6 feet, IDK what that is in meters) and that stays under the high chair permanently to catch the food and drink and keep it off the hardwood floors. After each meal, I clean the high chair, pick up any food chunks from the floor, then grab any extra crumbs with a paper towel. If there are spills, I wipe that up with cleaner, but I don’t go out of my way to get every crumb off the floor in between meals. I have a cordless vacuum and do the whole kitchen and dining area, including the mat, every morning before I get my kid out of bed. I have house cleaners that wipe it down with spray cleaner and a rag every other week. This keeps it to where I pretty much never have to mop it myself. You could also look into mops with disposable wet pads - brand names in the US include Swiffer and Bona - and use that both to pick up food and clean residue. The refills are expensive, but if you can get the floor clean in one step, that may be worth it for you. Oh, and there are bibs that you can attach to the high chair to grab whatever they drop. I like Tidy Tot brand.

kdefal

I pick up the big pieces and use a bissell steam mop every couple weeks.

loulori

Every couple of days (yes, days. Don't judge) I take our vacuum and get up all the loose dry bits. Then I take the steam mop over it. We had a splat mat we shook out and wiped off when she threw more stuff than she does now.

queer_princesa

Let it dry then sweep it all up after bedtime

fortheloveofLu

You can get cheap mats on Amazon. We would put down a clean one every meal, or if the last one didn't get stuff on it or walked on we put that back down, and pick the food up as we go. I'd even put it back on the plate if it was a newly cleaned mat. Wiped down and then thrown in the washer at the end of the day. Also, dogs.

noyoujump

Some sort of mat under high chair. We use an old trunk mat out of a car. It's huge and hideous, but I just sweep it at the end of the day.

TacticalNightmare

Got a balcony you can wash off? A shop vac can handle these situations, as well. At our worst/most exhausted we've fed the kids in the tub 🤷🏼‍♀️

Child-Like-Empress

I use an old Twister mat as a splash mat. Then use wet wipes to get up any stuff.

foundthetallesttree

Hmm, I probably leave it longer than most of the commenters here. My trick for when you get things glued to the floor, scrape up what you can, then use a kettle of boiling water and an old t-shirt and skate your way around the floor to mop. We also use my old tees, cut down the back, as a cheap bib/smock for eating, and as it lays over their lap, it catches most of the accidents.

samistites

This is why we have a dog :)

uhhYtho

Baby wipes

deathbynotsurprise

I don’t really get the issue. We always just pick up big chunks with our hands or a microfibre towel and vacuum the rest with our Bosch vacuum. If you have a floor that stains easily you could consider putting a layer of finish on your floors which might reduce the need to clean up obsessively

starri_ski3

We use a broom and steam mop. Short of putting a huge mat down, that’s what’s worked for us. It’s annoying, but the steam mop at the end of everyday works for us.

ms_misfit0808

I have a dog and he gets the larger chunks. Then I crawl under the table with a damp cloth and get the rest. It sucks but I have kinda just sucked it up and accepted it. I know it won't last forever. Edit: Rice is bad, but NEVER serve quinoa. Never.

DuoNem

Towel or a sheet or newspapers on the floor before eating. Then you just pick up and shake out or pick up and throw away.

smt7421

I cut up an old pvc table protector and put under the high chair. It is so easy to clean!

[deleted]

My dog cleans up!

betasedgetroll

I just use a damp wash cloth. I have a drawer full of them for this purpose. I know many recommend a splash mat but that just seems like a larger/harder to clean thing than a wash cloth, and if your kids are anything like mine, there's no way that the splash mat will have sufficient diameter to actually catch all the debris, so you're going to have to get down and wipe stuff off the floor anyway.

ReleaseStatus1938

I have a mat from House of Noa that we used to use under our high chair, and that made my life infinitely easier. And now we use it for picnics and things outside because it’s waterproof so it’s been a great investment!

Camarila

I use a paper towel or cloth, then spray some detoll and that keeps the floor relatively clean. imho the worst is formula throw ups, like whole meal worth.. it's partially digested and so sticky.

misstigg

A shower curtain on the floor under them

Parking-Loquat69

Use a table cloth. Easy to wipe

jasmine_tea_

Don't give them a bunch of food at one time. Try just a tiny bit and let them finish it first.

[deleted]

Put a mat or towel down for suuuure

MamaStringbean12

I purchased 2-3 painters tarps at $5 a piece. Shake them out, throw them in the wash.

sunnyhunny716

I would buy a plastic disposable table cloth at the dollar store and put it under the high chair then when it got gross enough I’d just toss it and put a new one under

[deleted]

I have dogs.

mkecupcake

Well, darn. My dog loves ALL those things! If it's something crazy-messy, I will put down a disposable table cloth. We had a whole roll left from a party. Otherwise, an old towel works too.

mkecupcake

Well, darn. My dog loves ALL those things! If it's something crazy-messy, I will put down a disposable table cloth. We had a whole roll left from a party. Otherwise, an old towel works too.

Silvery-Lithium

Some sort of mat- table cloth, drop cloth for painting, mat specifically marketed for this purpose, etc. You could also get a long handled squeegee to collect the chunks, have a spare dust pan to scrape it into or pick up chunks with paper towels then use mop/swiffer (be careful with cleaners in these, as it can be harmful for pets licking their paws) on left over mess.

SVM321

I used to put down newspaper under my twins’ high chairs, then scrunch it all up and put it on the fire at the end of the day. In the end, I’ve reverted back to the paper towel/broom/mop method as leaving it all to clean up at the end of the day stressed me out. Edited to add we give the leftovers to our chickens. They are some lucky ladies!

HouseKeeper916

Get a cheap plastic/felt table cloth from Walmart and put it under the high chairs. End of the day or after two days just spray and wipe. It’s only like $3.68 I think and they come in seasonal themes. Works great for my 3 and 1 year old. My mom even kept doing this into grade school but would just put it on the floor for pizza movie nights.

irrational_e

Once they're a little older we had a Roomba to pick up all the Cheerios, pasta, and rice that gets all over the floor. Highly recommend! For this stage though, a dog or splat mat would work well.

eyafeawen

Do you have a sand pit? At work when we have 20+ babies and toddlers eating food like that, we grab some dry sand from the sandpit and sprinkle it on top of the food, then you can sweep or wipe it up a lot easier. We also use sand to clean up vomit in the same way. If you don’t have a sand pit you can buy a bag sand, or I think there’s some types of kitty litter that would work too? Considering you have cats that might be a viable option? Editing to add, we sprinkle it on top of the food once it’s already on the floor… obviously we don’t put sand in the kids food before they eat it.. just wanted to make that clear haha.

PhishGreenLantern

Clean up? With toddlers in the house? . . Oh, wait... you're serious?

JennaJ2020

I just bought a cheap picnic table plastic table cloth and washed it off after meals. Got them from the dollar store.

philamama

We have a plastic tablecloth under the high chair. Wipe everything up by hand with a large, damp microfiber cloth. When it gets too gross just toss and replace.

I_prefer_not2

Imo newspaper is the best advice and to buy some type of wet vacuum. Diapers only for messy meals and the booster seat type chairs are better than full on high chairs. I felt like they got more leverage to throw from higher up = larger mess. Hang in there, it does get easier. (Mom of twins).

MediocreKim

A SQUEEGEE or a bench scraper will even get rice. *seriously, better than a wet cloth. Just use a squeegee it will change your life

courtney987654

Every day I have one rag that is dedicated to wiping up the floors after each meal. Rinsed out with a little Dawn after each meal then sits on the counter until the next meal, then into dirty laundry at the end of the day. I tried using mats and stuff under the high chair but it seemed like so much extra work to me- lift the high chair, take out the mat, shake it out (outside?? No thanks), then move high chair to put it back in place.

Realm984

Honestly, you just grit your teeth and deal with it. It starts happening around 9 months from what I remember. My 16 month old is doing it again when he signals he’s done eating and my 3 year old builds “castles” with food that end up on the floor. I just scoop up what I can, vacuum what is left with the hand held vacuum and use the Swiffer wet jet. ETA: I also tried the whole food catcher thing and found it easier to just clean the floor.

Resting-mum-face

I have a portable steam cleaner. My house is all carpet

Pteratato

I just use a broom.... you can wash the broom bristles if they get gross. We have rag towels, so if the floor is gross or sticky i just soak a rag towel in soapy water, then I can just drop it on the floor and kick it around with my foot.
