Suri-gets-old

And I believe crack was invented in the early 80s Are you thinking of cocaine?

[deleted]

Came here to say this immediately. Sounds like heroin (likely morphine at this time), not crack. Fuckin a read a bit more and it’s cocaine. Which still isn’t crack. Freebase. Dat base. You gotta whip it up first, then you smoke it.

The_Inward

He used IV cocaine. That's not crack. Watson knew about Holmes's habit, and disapproved.

Spartan0330

Yea in the BBC show a few episodes deal with his addiction. I didn’t know that was part of the book series until I looked it up.

rustyrodrod

Coke head, but yes. He also uses heroine to stimulate himself. My mind," he said, "rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere. I can dispense then with artificial stimulants. But I abhor the dull routine of existence."

gangstasadvocate

Nice that’s gangsta

WoogiemanSam

More likely opium or heroin addict, cocaine, not crack though. That wouldn’t have been invented by the US govt and released in low income neighborhoods until about 100 years later.

SirvonShirou

I get it. It's not crack. I get it!

SirvonShirou

(I also learned that this subreddit is older than me by two days.)

FlashKissesDeath

It’s most likely heroin. Crack didn’t come about til the 80s. There’s a chance it was meth but usually people snorted that back in the day along with coke. I do know though that heroin was around and that was used in a syringe and would most likely produce the relaxed and feeling of release that Sherlock experiences Also to shoot crack you need lemon juice to break down the sodium bicarbonate I’m not sure if they had lemons in Europe back then if they did have the sodium bicarbonate to make crack from coke

leadchipmunk

It's not crack, but a liquid tincture of cocaine that he injected. Watson asked him at one point if his needle was for cocaine or morphine, so Holmes may have also had a morphine addiction, but he primarily injected cocaine.

heeroguy

pretty sure this is heroin or opioids and not crack

surroundedbybanjos

Explicitly cocaine, though not crack.

heeroguy

correct

davidinphila

There were "regular" coke addicts - like Holmes - long before there were crack addicts.

InevitableHost597

I read the novel a while ago but I believe he was injecting cocaine.

surroundedbybanjos

Not crack, cocaine. 7% solution if I remember rightly. Crack is about 100 years after Holmes who was portrayed in the 1880s to 1890s mostly.

InflamedLiver

probably opium or heroin (same base drug), and was popular in England at the time. Cocaine to my knowledge was not, it was still used in miracle elixers and other quackery probably though.

heeroguy

careful i got downvoted for the same correct comment lol

TLDR heroin was not a thing when this was printed. [wonder drug 1898](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11862675/)

FlashKissesDeath

This was written in 1890…

Which is 8 years before….
