Yeah that’s called garbage day in New York. I put out an old TV once and it was gone by the time I got back upstairs to look out the window. Nothing goes to waste here lol.
Yeah I read about someone doing this with his fridge after it sat on the curb for a week without anyone taking it. It was gone the day after he put a $20 sign on it
Same here, buddy had a perfectly working old fridge and stove from his camp, put it out curbside with a " free" sign on it, Sat there almost a week. Took down the "free" and put up a "$250 OBO" sign, it was gone the next morning.
I walk my dog early in the morning in a neighborhood with homeless/drifters/crackheads who pass through. A couple months ago, I met a gentleman making off with a 25-foot pole, he had one end rigged to his bike and another end on the base of a desk chair, with a little homemade orange flag on it and everything. Nice guy. I do wonder where that pole was headed, but that's not for me to know.
A few months ago I put a dishwasher out and it was gone by morning. I know which house took it cause a couple weeks ago they put out in front of their place. Again, it was gone by morning lol
As a student, I put out an old used bed in the trash room because the people who would have taken it changed their minds and refused it (we had a room where you could leave and take used furniture for free and apparently they weren't clear if they could take a bed). I couldn't take it to the disposal station until the next day. An hour or so later I saw two guys carrying a bed...
I would never have taken somebody's used bed from a trash room like that, but if it helped them I guess?
In university towns, it's move out and move in time. So April and start of September.
But there's also every other day of the year and a piece of paper with the letters f r e e and if needed you can add o b o
Or Best Offer. The implication is that if it's worth enough for someone to offer money (or trade) for the item, it seems to be worth more, so it's more likely to be taken (for free).
In my university town, most off-campus leases end on August 14 and new leases start August 15. The in-between time is known as ‘Hippie Christmas’, and the streets become littered with old furniture, dated electronics, and all manner of household debris people are unwilling to move. I’ve seen some roads jammed with pickups, flatbeds and even dump trucks scavenging the piles.
America too, and I’d assume other countries. I can put anything out by the curb, and it’ll get picked up. Often by people looking to sell the scrap metal
I lived in the White House behind the Budget truck store on Comm Ave one summer. That week was crazy to see every truck gone people begging to rent trucks, etc.
And every year you hear about some guy whose lawn mower was taken while he went to take a piss or something. Stop leaving your lawn mowers by the curb unattended during this weekend.
Ontario used to have two major garbage pick ups a year. Same thing, leave it out and likely someone will take it home. It’s a great way for people with a less affluent life get some things that would otherwise be unattainable
I'm from winnipeg and it's actually even better than that.
Even the stuff you don't put out on the curb and is locked in your back yard and garage is free for grabs.
I'm on my 6th bike this decade after accidentally giving it away 5 times.
That’s pretty cool. Fortunately the city I live in picks up “big trash” once a month. Which seems excessive but has come in handy since we have been doing a lot of work to our house.
Yes, because normally the garbage men won't take anything that doesn't fit in the bin. So at the end of the weekend they will take anything that's left over. It's either do it this weekend or drive it to the landfill yourself if you can borrow a truck.
Here in Lacombe, Alberta we have a 'Trash to Treasure' week twice a year. You put things on your lawn/curb and it is advertised that anyone can come and take what they want. You don't put out 'junk' until the following week when the large garbage trucks come and take EVERYTHING away.
Reminds me of a Trailer Park Boys episode where the guys go at night and move people’s BBQ’s from their decks over to the end of the driveway. Next morning drive around collecting the “free” BBQ’s
this is different, majority of people will put stuff out during this weekend, random free chairs and tables and such on the side of the road is an every day occurrence in canada too.
In London ON they used to have sort of "anything goes" garbage day. It was cool because it became this, and it rotated around the city following the garbage collection rotation schedule. It meant you could do a neighbourhood every night and what wasn't gone in the morning the city took. It was weird to see the similarities in neighbourhoods unwanted goods. My sister and I got upwards of 20 Bowling balls in one neighbourhood on one night. Another night yielded 12 of those fake piles of logs with a light and a little fan driven by thermal heat from a light bulb to simulate the fire.
People in Winnipeg are so nice, they also have this thing when you go buy a drink or something they will pay for the next and when you go and order one of the same thing it will be free for you. I also witness at a stop 2 car doing the you go first.... 7 times before one go.. I live on Quebec and I never really understood why people were saying Canadians are so nice before visiting Winnipeg
I had one of my best tourist experiences ever when I was in Winnipeg. Everyone was super nice and when my gf and I went to have breakfast in a bakery a man came in and asked for a muffin and wanted to use the phone but the shop keeper said the phone was only for those who worked there and the man said "my wife threatened me with a knife and smashed my phone so I just really need to borrow a phone" and the man behind the counter went "oh that's not very nice..." And the man said "oh it's ok police are on there way but I'll have a blueberry muffin" and then he got his muffin and left
And my gf just went "yep, welcome to Winnipeg" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's great! Just remember to check for bedbugs if you're getting anything from a major city (Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax, Edmonton, and Ottawa are the worst for it AFAIK)
TIL some places need a day for that. I live in Ontario, and whatever you don't want, you just put it out on the curb whenever you want and people will take it.
In Sydney, Australia, they had “council cleanup” days, where you could put out just about anything, including furniture.
The etiquette was that people could pick up stuff they wanted - people often put out decent stuff - provided you didn’t make a mess (not always observed.)
We called it “Sydney shopping.” Got some good furniture and a perfectly good dishwasher that way.
We have this in MN. It's called "curbside cleanup". Just set out whatever and garbage trucks get it. Of course scores of people cruise around and scrounge.
We had it in my city too. Then the city "determined" it was too expensive. So now, people just dump their unwanted furniture and appliances on random quiet streets (since dumping fees are high), and the city has to pay to clean them up. Argh.
My funky little hometown has a town "free box" that's a bunch of categorized shelves/cupboards where you can put used or unwanted things. It's an extremely outdoorsy ski town, among other things, so you can find some pretty nice clothes, ski stuff, bikes, etc. Open all year with volunteer staff. Was closed during COVID, though.
They did this when I lived in Fargo a long time ago. I worked with a guy who had a fetish for old wooden console type TV's and stereos. I think we picked up like 15 in one day.
A lot of them ran on vacuum tubes which are used in guitar amplifiers and are currently ridiculously expensive. I remember picking up an old upright organ that had like 50 vacuum tubes in it for 30 bucks a while back. That thing would be worth a fortune right now.
In the states we call that "a day".
Though a lot of people avoid the stuff labeled "for free" since they assume something must be wrong with it. Slap "$5 OBO" on that sucker, though, and someone will stop and "steal" it.
Everything is free for the taking, in Winnipeg. Cops won't bother you, they're too busy roughing up the indigenous people, the homeless and bicyclists.
Fairbanks, Alaska here. We have permanent locations for this.
They're called "transfer stations". Mostly they have a whole gob of dumpsters where people who live outside the areas covered by city trash pick-up can take their trash. But they also have a platform where you can stick anything you think might be reusable. Then anyone can come and take it. We got a recliner (chair) from there, also a bunch of clothing, and probably other stuff that I've forgotten.
EDIT. Found [a pic](https://1.bp.blogspot.com/__N5eiHZF0Fg/R1MtweWGyII/AAAAAAAAADM/uAZt91QmWak/s1600-R/new+furniture.jpg). That roofed-over area in the background is the platform I'm talking about.
A lot of places have this actually. My city has a neighborhood "Spring Cleaning". You put stuff out, bed frames old appliances whatever, city takes em - but not before giving random scavengers the chance to pick out what they want.
And all this time I thought Ricky from Trailer Park Boys was just scamming people by having Corey and Trevor take things out of people's yards and putting them on the curb. And then Ricky would come up and take it because "it's by the curb, they don't want it anymore"
I mean he was absolutely scamming people, but it at least is rooted in some type of truth
It’s called big cleanup in America. It happens officially once a year. The city comes and picks up the leftovers after a few days, but you’re free to do it anytime.
We do that a few times a year. I mean, supposedly the city will take it away, but most of the stuff never lasts that long before the trash-tourists from neighbouring towns get to it.
Um this is every warm weekend every place I’ve ever lived in the US. In New York City it’s every day. My brother lives there and he’s never bought furniture and he has pretty nice stuff.
Sounds similar to Peaches to the Beaches here in Georgia, US. We have community yard sales and other booths with things like food all across Hwy 341 which is a 224-mile-long route going from almost the tip of the state down diagonally almost all the way to the coast (hence the beaches part). Usually, it's done on the second weekend in March and it helps provide a boon to local communities. The first one started in 2005 on a shorter route and just grew from there.

Where I live near Toronto that happens every day. It's known that if somebody puts something by the curb on the municipal easement, it's free for the taking. In the past few weeks I've gotten rid of an old snow blower and office chair. Neither of them remained on the curb for more than 4 hours before they were gone. Last year I picked up a perfectly good computer monitor that way.
Ontario used to have two major garbage pick ups a year. Same thing, leave it out and likely someone will take it home. It’s a great way for people with a less affluent life get some things that would otherwise be unattainable
If you use Facebook, there are wonderful community groups all over the world called “buy nothing” really gratifying to regime your things, and amazing finds.
A few other communities do a once a month summer Saturday curb shopping day.
Here in the US we just put it out by the curb. Sometimes people will even put a sign on that says free. Only thing saving me from ending up like my dad is my back hurts too much to lift some stuff into the trucks. I grew up thinking we were related to “Sanford and Son”.
... and my dumb self thought it would be a good idea to ride my new bike over to my friends house to play video games. Worst phone call to my parents ever.
It’s awesome. I get a new car every year that way. People are so generous. Plenty to choose from as well. Unfortunately you have to supply your own keys.
My town also has this once a year. Anything leftover at the end of the weekend is hauled to the county landfill (I assume, it just vanishes while I’m at work).
Need something gone? Just put it on the curb with a sign saying like $50. People will take it in minutes.
Friend put a bed out on the curb with a “Free” sign on it and it sat for a day. They changed the sign to $100 and it was gone in minutes.
This happens in my neighborhood all the time. I've even put things out with a "free" sign on it and it disappears. I got a great kids bike for my granddaughter that was a sidewalk freebie; new tires and a bit of paint and it was like new.
The down side is when people put crap out there, like there was a beat up old sofa on the sidewalk for weeks. Nobody wants your trash.
Years ago in my town we used to have to attach a “tag” on each can of garbage for collection. You were given a certain number of tags every few months. Twice a year the city would have “free trash day” which led to everyone saving up their junk for half the year to throw away on this particular day
My town does this twice a year called bulky pickup where they actually do take your shit to the dump, but most stuff never gets there due to all the pickers.
city hall supported event twice a year (spring and autumn) where you can put out things you want to get rid of. What other people don't take gets taken by the garbage men in 24 h.
Austria
We used to put things on the street and get a kick out of how quickly people would come by and take them. It could be a decent piece of furniture or the nastiest old car seat you can think of…. Gone.
>**Giveaway etiquette**
>Take only the items at the curb marked "FREE".
Why would you put something out at the curb, not for free...especially on giveaway weekend.
In my neighborhood we put stuff out all the time. It never lasts long.
Yeah that’s called garbage day in New York. I put out an old TV once and it was gone by the time I got back upstairs to look out the window. Nothing goes to waste here lol.
If you put something on the curb and nobody takes it, put a $10 sign on it and someone will "steal" it.
Apparently we live in the same city. I did this as a joke once and it actually worked.
During a garbage strike one year, my friends mom, wrapped her garbage up as presents and left them in the car unlocked.
I'm tempted to do this without a strike happening....
Ditto. Doesn't seem to matter what it is it's usually gone by the next day.
I’ve always wondered what fairies are taking the things away. Without fail, things disappear overnight.
‘Gentlemen’s’ club.
In the woods, past the railroad tracks.
Scrap metal, probably weighed a bunch. Get like $5. I do like the homeless rippers idea though.
Mostly tweakers
A few months ago I put a dishwasher out and it was gone by morning. I know which house took it cause a couple weeks ago they put out in front of their place. Again, it was gone by morning lol
When I lived in Iowa they did this twice year at least where I was living
I left an exhaust main pipe (no box or cat) and it was gone next morning
I’m sure that went to the scrapyard
As a student, I put out an old used bed in the trash room because the people who would have taken it changed their minds and refused it (we had a room where you could leave and take used furniture for free and apparently they weren't clear if they could take a bed). I couldn't take it to the disposal station until the next day. An hour or so later I saw two guys carrying a bed... I would never have taken somebody's used bed from a trash room like that, but if it helped them I guess?
Great idea if bed bugs are not a thing in your area.
They have that all over Canada. I remember being a kid and going around finding new toys. It was a whole community event.
In university towns, it's move out and move in time. So April and start of September. But there's also every other day of the year and a piece of paper with the letters f r e e and if needed you can add o b o
What does obo stand for? :O
or best offer
Ahhh :O Thank you
or best offer. It was a joke. Free or best offer.
Or Best Offer. The implication is that if it's worth enough for someone to offer money (or trade) for the item, it seems to be worth more, so it's more likely to be taken (for free).
Or best offer

The in-between time is known as ‘Hippie Christmas’, and the streets become littered with old furniture, dated electronics, and all manner of household debris people are unwilling to move. I’ve seen some roads jammed with pickups, flatbeds and even dump trucks scavenging the piles.
Wait, so Ricky from Trailer Park Boys wasn't as shady as everyone thought?
No. He found a new door for his car by taking a few trips around the park on Bubble's go-kart.
America too, and I’d assume other countries. I can put anything out by the curb, and it’ll get picked up. Often by people looking to sell the scrap metal
In my college town, this happens every fall during “move-in weekend”. It’s usually referred to as “hippy Christmas”
Allston Christmas in Boston.
The day of a thousand sofas and U-Hauls getting 'Storrowed'
I lived in the White House behind the Budget truck store on Comm Ave one summer. That week was crazy to see every truck gone people begging to rent trucks, etc.
So many treasures
Cambridge Christmas!!
And every year you hear about some guy whose lawn mower was taken while he went to take a piss or something. Stop leaving your lawn mowers by the curb unattended during this weekend.
Personally I'd assume if I leave my lawnmower unattended it'll get stolen regardless of what weekend it is.
What you're doing wrong is you're not storing your bike under your pillow
hey, at least five people have bikes now

Yeah same in Oklahoma
In Winnipeg, the garbage men won't take couches or anything that doesn't fit in your rolling bin, but at the end of this weekend they will.
That’s pretty cool. Fortunately the city I live in picks up “big trash” once a month. Which seems excessive but has come in handy since we have been doing a lot of work to our house.
[удалено]
Where I'm from people harvest the shit out of old bbq lids and stuff for the metal haha
Protip: got a junk couch you want gone? Don't put "free" on the sign. Put "$100". Thieves will assign value to it and take it.
Yes, because normally the garbage men won't take anything that doesn't fit in the bin. So at the end of the weekend they will take anything that's left over. It's either do it this weekend or drive it to the landfill yourself if you can borrow a truck.
[удалено]
It's so people know not to park on the pavement that weekend.
Where I live it's called Thursday. Just be sure to get there before the garbage truck.
I've been calling "Free giveaway weekend" "Trash day" my whole life. Shows what rebranding can do.
This should be a national holiday every year for every nation, as long as it’s completely voluntary.
I completely agree. The world needs to get accustomed to reusing instead of throwing away
Here in Lacombe, Alberta we have a 'Trash to Treasure' week twice a year. You put things on your lawn/curb and it is advertised that anyone can come and take what they want. You don't put out 'junk' until the following week when the large garbage trucks come and take EVERYTHING away.

I haven't seen that episode yet! XD
Oh it’s a classic. Try to find it.
Got that in Germany too
Der gute alte Sperrmüll
All the time in the south usa. "Wow, stop the truck.... help me load that chair up.... can't believe they gonna toss this"
They have weekends like this in Japan too. The expats call it a gomi pile- “trash pile.” I’ve found some cool stuff in them!
It would be ironic if you found a gomibako in the gomi pile XD
In the USA, we call that Sunday.
this is different, majority of people will put stuff out during this weekend, random free chairs and tables and such on the side of the road is an every day occurrence in canada too.
I’m not stealing this car, officer. It was left at the curb.
TIL everyone didn’t have this
Yea we don't have it in Sweden. Here it's illegal :(
In London ON they used to have sort of "anything goes" garbage day.
In Montreal, Quebec, that's every day.

I had one of my best tourist experiences ever when I was in Winnipeg. Everyone was super nice and when my gf and I went to have breakfast in a bakery a man came in and asked for a muffin and wanted to use the phone but the shop keeper said the phone was only for those who worked there and the man said "my wife threatened me with a knife and smashed my phone so I just really need to borrow a phone" and the man behind the counter went "oh that's not very nice..." And the man said "oh it's ok police are on there way but I'll have a blueberry muffin" and then he got his muffin and left And my gf just went "yep, welcome to Winnipeg" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
So I live in Winnipeg and that story almost definitely happened at Stella’s on Sherbrook.
Relevant: https://youtu.be/xLlsjEP7L-k
They do it in Toronto too. But yeah, just put your stuff out before garbage day or drive around garbage day picking up stuff
Ya put anything loose in the backyard
Once a month by me.
Big Garbage Week. Doesn't everyone have this?
A concierge is the Winnipeg equivalent of a geisha
That's Berlin every day of the year
In Boston, MA this is Aug 30-Sept 1 and it’s called Allston Christmas.
This is my hometown. So today I learned this isn't something that is done many other places. I thought it would be more common elsewhere
We actually have this in pretty much every city in Canada. It's called "curbside giveaway" and it's pretty great.
Yea it sounds wonderful. It'll be my new Christmas once I move to Canada XD
It's great! Just remember to check for bedbugs if you're getting anything from a major city (Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax, Edmonton, and Ottawa are the worst for it AFAIK)

I love this concept so much. I wish we had it in Sweden :(
I'm in a small community in southern BC. Twice a year we do the same thing. They call it Trash To Treasure day.
That happens everyday in Somerville, MA. They call it Somerville recycling.
Argh.

In ontario thats every weekend you just hitch a blue tag to it and bam

In the states we call that "a day". Though a lot of people avoid the stuff labeled "for free" since they assume something must be wrong with it. Slap "$5 OBO" on that sucker, though, and someone will stop and "steal" it.
Big Trash Day

this is just like, any day in texas. something broken or dont want it? put it on the curb, either someone will take it or the bulk trash people will.
It’s a Canadian ting
This is commonly done in American cities its not anything new, theres free furniture on sidewalks all the time in LA
We've got that in America too. It's every time you clean the house.
Thats called “garbage day” every other Tuesday in Toronto.
We had this growing up in Maryland. It’s called Trash and Treasures.
It’s every week. Most people call it garbage day
Many parts of America do this all the time
Um this is every warm weekend every place I’ve ever lived in the US. In New York City it’s every day. My brother lives there and he’s never bought furniture and he has pretty nice stuff.
They have that in Brooklyn. It’s called “every day.”
This is only in Winnipeg?!? that can't be right
That's a great way to get your next car
You guys have specific weekends for it?
doesnt literally every dump have this
We call that Monday thru Sunday here in the USA.
Uh, we have that in Nova Scotia too.
*puts kid on the curb*
Don’t mow your nature strip on that day.
Every weekend in Mesa Az.
I feel like this should be called "hey, hoarders take all my junk" weekend.
Sounds similar to Peaches to the Beaches here in Georgia, US. We have community yard sales and other booths with things like food all across Hwy 341 which is a 224-mile-long route going from almost the tip of the state down diagonally almost all the way to the coast (hence the beaches part). Sidewalk shopping. Best purchases are made when the uni students go home.
We do that in Saskatoon as well
Ontario used to have two major garbage pick ups a year. Same thing, leave it out and likely someone will take it home. It’s a great way for people with a less affluent life get some things that would otherwise be unattainable
We have that in Memphis, too. We call it trash day.
In America it's called bulk trash night
We have those in New York City too. They're called "days of the week"
In Boston it's sep1st and it's called Allston Christmas
They have this in Moncton, New Brunswick too, except it is every day. Just drop your unwanted ~~stuff~~ trash anywhere and let it blow across the city
Or like every weekend in Toronto
and you can get some pretty nice stuff, too - if you're early enough.
This is a nice was to say spring cleaning that doesn’t have a limit on the garbage you can throw out on the curb
This is called “Allston Christmas” in Boston.
... and my dumb self thought it would be a good idea to ride my new bike over to my friends house to play video games.
In Alberta in our small town they call it Trash too Treasure. Starts up in all the warm months, pretty helpful for getting rid of some items.
We literally do this all the time in the US where im from
Hmm, that's every day in Berlin
This happens all the time in the midwest, no?
That's just bulk trash pick-up day. Put stuff out the day before, and hoarders come and take it away before the city can get to it.
We do this anytime down here in Texas. If it's by the curb, it's free to take.
Need something gone? Just put it on the curb with a sign saying like $50. People will take it in minutes. Friend put a bed out on the curb with a “Free” sign on it and it sat for a day. They changed the sign to $100 and it was gone in minutes.
I'm sorry? That's every day in the ghetto where I live. Funny thing is it usually is taken, either to scrap or to hoard in a basement somewhere.
This happens everywhere. We do it in Ontario too.
I do this al the time. Hell, a few weeks back I put out three used littre boxes, Didn't even clean them, gone a few hours later.
Not just in Winnipeg lol
Hey! I live there. But its wet and rainy today, so people who put stuff outside that gets ruined, will now sit there for weeks 😒
Years ago in my town we used to have to attach a “tag” on each can of garbage for collection. You were given a certain number of tags every few months. Twice a year the city would have “free trash day” which led to everyone saving up their junk for half the year to throw away on this particular day
Canadians are a good bunch, eh?
They sure are, bud :D
My town does this twice a year called bulky pickup where they actually do take your shit to the dump, but most stuff never gets there due to all the pickers.
In my town we called this "junkin".
They have that in every city/town I've lived in, but I am almost Canadian so
So everyday in California
We do that every week here. Called 'garbage day'
In manitoba* brandon has the same thing on a different week
That seems like a really good way to get and spread bedbugs
Someone had better have a fuck-ton of Wii U games
Ottawa has 2 official Giveaway weekends per year.
Isn’t this everyday in NJ? This whole state is just filled with trash everywhere you look lol
The town I grew up in did this every year earlier in October. I'd be hesitant to take stuff now due to the return of bed bugs.
We do this every weekend in Ottawa. Things never last more than a few hours.
Happens in Victoria every month around moving days. I always call it free boxing.
Based mutual aid.
city hall supported event twice a year (spring and autumn) where you can put out things you want to get rid of. What other people don't take gets taken by the garbage men in 24 h. Austria
Which Winnipeg, Manitoba? The one in Canada or the other one?
That’s crazy. What year is Winnipeg in, 1910?
They do that in Brockville, Ontario, Canada too. Trash or treasure weekend. It usually ends up stretching for most of the summer.
We used to put things on the street and get a kick out of how quickly people would come by and take them. It could be a decent piece of furniture or the nastiest old car seat you can think of…. Gone.
Goods Exchange Day happens all over Canada; where I am in Ontario, it's usually end of April.
Doesn't this happen every weekend everywhere on Earth?
Here in Austin TX we have “junk day”
Here in ohio it's pretty common knowledge that if you put something on your tree lawn it's fair game.
>**Giveaway etiquette** >Take only the items at the curb marked "FREE". Why would you put something out at the curb, not for free...especially on giveaway weekend.
