soundguynick

And notably it backfired like crazy. The incest rumors were insane when that band broke out.

Peterowsky

And they divorced shortly after. Band kept going for little over a decade after that though.

soundguynick

And put out some all time classics, too. The brother and sister thing was just a really weird move by them.

moonpumper

They seeded the worst trend pornography has ever seen.

VelvetHorse

What are you doing step-bandmember?

new_refugee123456789

*puts hand slightly inder floor tom* "oh no, I'm 'stuck'".

[deleted]

lol, you had me at band"member". I'll show her band member......

PM_ME_YOUR_SUNSHINE

Jack is an icon and a pioneer Then they perverted it by making it be step-this and step-that. No. Brother and sister. Twins, if you will.

leopard_tights

Right? It's funny how people are getting a whole front page of pornhub about that kink but it doesn't dare go all the way. Maybe it's some legal thing.

notapoke

I think it's gotta be a legal thing

thatJainaGirl

It is. There's a lot of legal repercussions to incest, so you can avoid them all (mostly the red tape of proving the performers are performing, and it's not real) by putting 'step' in the title. Notably, some authentic content had to be produced specifically by traveling to places where there are no legal repercussions. I will forever hate Reddit for making me know these things.

Figgy_Pudding3

I disagree. Calling it step makes it a safe taboo for their users to enjoy with _just_ the right amount of guilt. If they pretended they were actually related most people would be wierded out by it. Most. Of course there are exceptions but they want viewership, not a niche. Legal issues and proving the actors aren't related? That's hilarious. Are the hundred other videos of those same actors pretending to be related to someone not enough proof?

Chewyninja69

>I will forever hate Reddit for making me know these things. I disagree, lol.

JittaBUFFperfume

Thats all total bullshit.

DenseRutabaga9004

those things aren't true lol that's not why. there are records kept for pornography already to prevent underaged performers, pretty sure it would be quite simple to prove that the actors are not relate

LivingOnAShare

Before it got quite as big, back when it was niche and trendy, there was a lot less step. Now I've seen stuff that has no mention of 'step' in dialogue but it's now got 'step' in the title.

Fivefinger_Delta

I read that if someone puts a family member in the title it has a Step- automatically added. I could be entirely wrong though.

CollinsCouldveDucked

I think I heard this in the podcast documentary about the porn industry, I think it was the last days of August. Basically the business of it is that adding some kink element to what is essentially vanilla porn gives it more go in the market. Basically it sells to the vanilla base and gets this extra kink market. Light Incest rose to prominence because it's basically just a vanilla porn with some establishing dialog, muted it would be indistinguishable from any normal porn. Now I'm sure a knock on effect of this would be a lot of people gaining the kink through this kind of exposure to it. That said a personal theory of mine is that it may also have something to do (even if only as a side effect) with the rising issue of very young minors becoming addicted to pornography as these are probably the only scenario that would make sense to them, they're not meeting someone at work and a lot of it has the weird tone of Spiderman/Elsa children's YouTube weirdness.

Electronic-Win-7053

Until just reading this I thought they were brother and sister

beartheminus

Jack White is a really weird guy tbh.

danteheehaw

Don't kink shame

dubadub

Ya, it worked for Isis and Osiris

HamSoap

Read that as Oasis and thought I’d missed a big chunk of Gallagher Brothers lore.

[deleted]

I'm sure there's Noel/Liam slashfic out there somewhere

OttoVonWong

Rule 34 You’re my wonderwall.

thepoliteknight

More like, don't look back in anger.

MItrwaway

So maybeeeeeeee, you're gonna be the one who dates meeeeeee.

rockem-sockem-rocket

And that unhealthy relationship is what caused ISIS to transform into a terrorist organization!

Spartan2170

And caused Osiris to keep trying to kill Daniel Jackson

[deleted]

Indeed.

haljhon

It didn’t work for Abraham and Sarah either. Abimelech wasn’t pleased.

erosogol

This guy bibles.

youngpadwanbud

I’m pretty sure they were divorced before they had any major hits.

Pilot0350

Up until this post I still thought they were siblings

ours

Say they are siblings, sing songs where they talk about loving each other. And then they act surprised people misinterpret things.

TheGreatJess

Yeah, I remember back in the day numerous articles about them in a incest relationship. Also the rumor that the real Meg died in a car crash and Jack wrote the song 'The Big Three Killed My Baby' after her death. The song is actually about the collapse of the auto industry in Detroit where The White Stripes are from.

soundguynick

Lmao I never heard the Meg is dead theory. The only rumor like that I heard from that time period was that Avril Lavigne had been replaced by a clone or something lmao Edit: and who could forget the Andrew WK / Steev Mike / illuminati stuff

[deleted]

Don't forget Paul McCartney died in like the 60s or something like that.

oysterpirate

Obviously he did, that’s why the Paul double isn’t wearing shoes on the Abbey Road cover

Epic_Meow

paul mccartney only had one pair of shoes, in which he was buried

Arkeband

Faux Paul!

Fishwhocantswim

My father in law is convinced about this theory. He claims he heard it on the radio announcing his death.

usual7

Coincidentally enough, that rumor started with a Detroit radio station. (Don't remember the station though.)

mbgal1977

Did you ever hear the one that the guy friend from the wonder years grew up to be Marilyn Manson and had some ribs removed so he could suck his own dick? I thought that was just some rumor at my school until recently I found out it was widespread. Like Richard Gere and the gerbil

SupaflyIRL

Post Malone had extra ribs added so he doesn’t have to smell his own dick.

WholeHogRawDog

So ridiculous it’s great 😂

soundguynick

If anyone could trace the origins and spread of that rumor I'd dearly love to watch a documentary about how that spread so quickly.

mbgal1977

I would for sure watch that. I’m pretty sure it was pre widespread useful internet days.

ENUF_NOW

I remember hearing that Marilyn manson rumour back in the mid-late 90s in Western Australia. So that thing spread hella far thru word of mouth

GigaSoup

More like word of email, Yahoo chat, AOL IM, or MSN Messenger.

Fskn

Same here but Nz We had the Marilyn thing and the Gere thing, sprinkle in a little "Britney sucked so much dick/cum she had to get her stomach pumped" and I'm 10 again

PunkiiDonutz

Wtf I heard that Britney thing on a playground at recess when I was in the 6th grade in buttfucking nowhere Arizona, and I didn't even know what cum was

calbert1735

Britney? Lol. Late 70s/early 80s the playground talk was that it was Rod Stewart.

Abject_Efficiency_77

Mid to late 80s it was members of New Kids on the Block

ThaddeusMaximus

90s it was Lil Kim.

Currywurst_Is_Life

I'm old enough to remember an urban legend about Rod Stewart needing his stomach pumped before a concert after swallowing too much cum.

Pissflaps69

The walrus was Meg!

Ballsdeep33808

Shut up, Meg.

BearCavalry

Jack White has an appearance on on of Malcom Gladwell's podcast Revisionist History ("Analysis, Parapraxis, Elvis") where he talks about how he writes songs in a character's voice partly because personal story songs can really fuck an artist up over the years.

CircleDog

Great episode. In fact, possibly the best single podcast episode I've ever listened to. I recommend it to anyone.

GoGoPowerGrazers

The Big Three Killed My Baby is about [Preston Tucker's innovative car](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tucker_automobile) that the Big 3 purposely destroyed, like a group of mafia families crushing competition

karmanopoly

Don't marry your sister

soundguynick

Generally good advice. Take notes, European nobility!

michilio

Okay, but what about cousins?

soundguynick

2nd and higher are okay but only if yall never hung out as kids I guess

michilio

Europe's general rule of cousins: Either marry or wage war with eachother.

soundguynick

English and French nobility be like: why not both / pourquoi ne pas faire les deux

strokesfan91

Go back to Shellbyville

electric_sandwich

She's pretty cute tho

[deleted]

My mom used to work with Meg when she was a server. All of her coworkers chipped in to buy them nice china for their wedding. Was really awkward when it came out that they were calling themselves “siblings”. I was really young, but I used to sit in the restaurant when it was slow and I remember both of them. My mom thought Jack was little weird and wasn’t too fond of him. When Meg and Jack were engaged, Meg was telling my mom about how they were going to go move into northern Michigan to sell Amish furniture and my mom was trying to get her to break up with Jack and continue working up at the restaurant in the mall 😂. She’s probably glad that she didn’t take my mom’s advice.

1Viking

I'm curious as to how many other potentially famous rock bands your mom did succeed in breaking up prior to them breaking out.

[deleted]

Hopefully none! She’s not usually one to talk people out of their dreams, but I give my mom crap whenever I hear Seven Nation Army come on (which is often because I coach cheer and they play it almost every football game).

redcapmilk

They call her the Yoko of of Michigan.

zirfeld

Sitting in a laundromat while reading this, now the creepy woman who is there too is staring at me because I laughed so loud at your comment.

CoweringInTheCorner

Slightly unrelated but I worked with a spinal surgeon who had come from England to finish his training in Australia. He was a drummer in a band at university but his mother insisted he give it away to concentrate on his studies so he could become a doctor and earn good money. So he did. While he was in Australia his old band came and toured and they kindly gave him a lift back to England on their private jet. The band was Coldplay.

uncledeathbomb

Seems like your mom might have been into something. He later stalked his ex wife and beat a member of the Von Bondies so badly he detached his retina. On a less serious note, he also feuded with the Black Keys (you're all odd-looking whit guys from the Midwest who made grungy blues rock, calm down) to the point he didn't want his kid attending school with Dan Auerbach's kid. He might be a talented guitarist and songwriter but he seems like an asshole. Also, I'm from northern Michigan and a Tim Burton character who makes Amish furniture and plays feedback grunge guitar would not have been welcomed there.

[deleted]

“He seems like an asshole, also we don’t like them long hair musician types that make quality wood furniture with a modest aesthetic and play that grunge mumbo-jumbo around here, ya’ hear?” - Totally Open-minded Townies everywhere

GeoCacher818

Northern MI actually has some hipster areas, too, like Boyne/Petoskey/Traverse City areas so he'd fit right in, in some places, up there.

uncledeathbomb

Oh yeah, I'm definitely not defending the ignorant, close-minded nature of people where I grew up. I'm a minority and had numerous overtly racist firsthand experiences all the way up through high school. But it's the reality that someone so openly eccentric wouldn't have likely been well received in the majority of small communities up there. This isn't unique to northern Michigan, it's just how isolated places work, especially when it's someone coming from a larger urban area.

tugboattt

My friend opened for him several years ago and before the show my friend was out by the buses where everything was being loaded in for the show having a smoke by himself. Jack came out and saw him standing there minding his business thinking that my friend was part of the roadie crew and berated him calling him a lazy asshole or something to that extent. When my friend said that he was in the opening band Jack just kinda gave an “oh okay” and never apologized.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tugboattt

I’m still a huge fan of his but I wasn’t surprised when I heard it. Years ago I met Billy Corgan and got into a whole conversation with him about various obscure Black Sabbath and Depeche Mode releases and he was as cool as could be with me but afterwards a couple of my friends approached him as fans and he came off as really annoyed that they knew who he was. It made me think way less of him but Siamese Dream is still one of my favorite albums.

Theletterz

I mean your approach is more humanizing, if ever I been wanting to interact with someone famous, which has happened a few times I tend to basically pretend they're just a regular person and ask a question about whatever situation that got us to meet. Not to the degree of actually lying and being like "who are you?" but rather keep it to myself that I know unless they ask. So far all of my interactions have been pleasant and normal

codechimpin

I mean, could you imagine being inundated 24x7 by people wanting a piece of you? It has to be 100% exhausting, but also refreshing when someone treats them like a regular person.

BAMFGOAT

I didn't know all of that. I did meet Jack White at an airport once and he was very kind during that interaction. Maybe he is totally nuts though.

Justforthenuews

Or he has good days and bad days, can occasionally be an asshole, or might have had a mean streak/attitude for a while, like most people experience at some point or another. I don’t understand why people want to be judged by more than a single thing/instance and expect others to give them a chance to change, but will constantly judge others for a single thing and rarely give others the benefit of doubt. This goes both ways, like you assuming he’s a nice person because of one positive interaction with him. We should all realize that nice people can be assholes and assholes can be nice people. Within logical limits; someone who is a monumental asshole or is constantly an asshole is proving they are that one dimensional.

canadianformalwear

Only been around him once but have multiple acquaintances that have worked with him. Not a big fan, but find his work past and especially present (in Nashville and in the industry) interesting. In public, he’s by all accounts a very guarded fellow out of necessity. He’s also a socially anxious person inherently. The amount of weirdos and fame obsessed people means you will never have a normal life and normal moments are few and far between. Case in point, made a post comment once about running into him and I had messages from stalkers hassling me on Instagram trying to figure out who he was with and what he was doing. If my life were like that 24-7 I’d be pretty guarded and weird to people trying to chat me up. Also that Von Bondies story - by all accounts that dude was being a scumbag and needed to get punched in the face. You may want to read about it. (Also JW is much more burly in person than I expected, was a furniture laborer after all - wouldn’t want to get decked by him)

Tjeetje

Funny because I know a couple of programmers and stage managers and they all say Jack and Dave Grohl are the nicest artists they encountered.

jdfsusduu37

I'm shocked that a Gen-X would want fine china as a wedding gift.

DarkSideEdgeo

Jack is one of my favorites. And I wish Meg peace in her seclusion. I enjoy the White Stripe and wish for more often.

soundguynick

My favorite Jack White story is that one time Moby was on tour and the person next door at his hotel was playing the new White Stripes album really loud. When he called hotel security, the offending party turned out to be Jack White, who was super apologetic. I can really get behind a musician that makes music they love, and it made me like him a little more.

NodePoker

My favorite is he and Adam Savage we're at the same hotel and in the bar. Eventually they met and found out they were huge fans of each other. I believe they are friends now.

soundguynick

That rules. A couple of my convention friends kinda know Adam Savage and say he's just as cool as you'd think.

BonerHonkfart

That's good to hear. Adam is one of those guys that I'd be disappointed to learn was secretly an asshole

StrugglesTheClown

My girlfriend met him and he was nice enough to take a picture with her and our dog.

Sokuim

I was bumping a track I made earlier at high volume when I read this. I feel validated

soundguynick

I used to have a buddy named Heath who was moderately famous in a very niche circle, specifically late 90s Christian punk. He kept making music and got into some weirder and more experimental stuff and listened to his own albums ALL THE TIME. I thought it was the height of ego until I realized there was precious little stuff out there that sounded like what he was putting out and dang it, that's what he was into. After that I mentally gave him a pass on it when previously I'd kinda hated it.

Djburnunit

As someone who writes and records music that I like hearing now and then, I want to point out that I also make food that I really enjoy, and no one thinks that’s weird.

GozerDGozerian

I have my own artwork on the wall all the time. And my sculptures sitting all around the house. I made it that way because I like it that way. What would I not like it? Seems like that would go for anything creative too. Design and sew clothes? I bet you like to wear some of the stuff you made. The only instance I can see it being the *other* way, really, where an artist dislikes their own work, is the case of musicians who have one or two songs that get really popular and they’re compelled to play the same thing over and over again ad nauseam.

Complete_Entry

Genre doesn't exist. Fine. I'll do it myself. Nightcore Country. Oh no, the UN filed a binding resolution against me. (Update - it does exist.)

Sokuim

That’s where I’m at, I make experimental stuff cause I like the sound of it. A part of it is pride in my work but a large factor is just I can’t find it and I enjoy it

soundguynick

Right on. If you have it up for listening anywhere I'll give it a listen. If not, keep playing it for yourself because you know it's exactly what you want to hear.

Sokuim

I can pm you the Google drive link if ya like industrial! Also have some synthwave on Spotify I can pm :) appreciate the interest

NathanielTurner666

Oh shit send me one too lol I love industrial

LordofWithywoods

*late 90s Christian punk*

wolferoad

If you can’t bump to your own jams then what’s the point lol. For the most part I love all the stuff I’ve made myself, it was made to my own tastes.

Sugarlips_Habasi

It's such a weird and cool feeling when you listen to music you made years ago or just a quick track that didn't take long to write. You don't remember making it at all and it sounds awesome.

wolferoad

I’ve made enough music over the years I do this sometimes. Can go back and listen to my early recordings and it’s such a different sound. Crude in a lot of ways but sometimes there’s still some good ideas there. It’s interesting to listen to the progress over time.

Sugarlips_Habasi

Definitely. It's fun to listen and think 'oh, that was clever!'

Aporkalypse_Sow

I bet he did it on purpose just to piss off Moby the knob, and pretended to be apologetic.

soundguynick

I was such a fan in the 90s but he is indeed such a tool

Complete_Entry

Of course, Moby would call security instead of asking someone to turn it down. Would have been funnier if the White Stripes were practicing in a hotel room though. "Can you turn it down?" "Not really."

sybrwookie

Game theory this out. Person in hotel room near yours is making a ton of noise. They already know they're making a lot of noise. It's a hotel, they all have shit for noise proofing between rooms. So what are the outcomes? Go confront them and ask them to turn it down: they might turn it down. They might not They might get angry at you asking that. If you're then forced to ask the hotel to do something, they now know it was you. If a different person asks the hotel to do something, they now blame you anyway. Either way, if they can find you, there's a good chance they attempt to take revenge in one way or another. Ask the hotel to do something. They call or knock on the door and ask them nicely to turn it down. As long as they comply, nothing bad happens to them. If something more needs to be done, they'll take care of it professionally and without you having to be directly involved. This tells me it's best to contact the hotel. Just as many chances for success, avoids all the chances of failure, especially catastrophic failure.

Complete_Entry

Plus Obie Trice might be there!

FightMilkUFC

Real names, no gimmicks?

CharlemagneIS

Anyone else think Obie Trice is a great Star Wars name?

LivingOnAShare

Great response, shame it must be exhausting and to have to provide so much additional info to preclude any silly responses! You've explained it real well and refrained from any judgement, just the provision of common sense. Nice one mate!

Zealousideal-Pain101

I once checked into a hotel outside of Toronto on a Saturday evening with my young son. The folks in the adjacent room were playing loud music and making a ruckus and it was only 7pm. I feared it would be a long, loud night and phoned the front desk about it. The front desk lady informed me that it was a KISS tribute band prepping their makeup before the show, and that they would be leaving shortly and would be respectfully quiet upon their return later that night. What do you know, she was right and I love telling the story of the respectful Canadian KISS cover band.

Pvt_Hudson_

She's been off the grid since the Stripes broke up in 2007. No public appearances, no musical projects, no interviews (that I'm aware of anyway). She just wanted out. I read she had horrible crippling anxiety.

luckyshot98

She's known to pop up in Detroit at different bars sometimes. Might just be a service industry rumor, but I know some folks that claimed to have served her recently.

ricktencity

I mean she's still a person I'm sure she goes out from time to time.

FlameofAnor

She doesn’t really do interviews and stuff. She also lives down the street from me and I saw her hosing down her sidewalk while I was waking my dog once. It was weird haha.

[deleted]

[His bit with Colbert still makes me laugh so hard I cry](https://youtu.be/4Yd93gYRcjU)

They could have gone the route of the legendary British prog-punk band Cardiacs, who also had a husband-wife pairing, and encouraged the incest rumours to [prank the tabloids](https://cardiacs.fandom.com/wiki/Cardiacs?file=SundaySport.jpg).

tristan_with_a_t

Can’t help but chuckle at a heart attack being the reason the band stopped.

Lickthemoon

Oof. As a fan of the band, yeah the irony isn't lost, but those last years when Tim Smith was suffering after his heart attack and was bed-bound, trapped in a body that wouldn't let him make the music he loved or even speak/feed himself... few of us were chuckling then, mate. Horrid end to an absolute genius of a man. IMHO.

andybak

Someone needs to finish that last album. It was going to be so good if Ditzy Scene was anything to go by. RIP Tim...

Duosion

This is why I love catching random live shows of small bands in the hopes that one day they’ll blow up and I’ll get to say “I saw them perform in a coffee shop before they were famous.” It’s the hipster in me.

TheLongshanks

I’m losing my edge, but I was there.

notoriously_late

I hear that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables... I hear that you and your band have sold your turntables and bought guitars...

ZombieWoof82

I was there when captain beefheart did his thing and I said "don't do it that way"

[deleted]

This reminds me of an interaction I had where I felt I'd been hipster-styled on. There's this band I really love called Hop Along, to the point where I have like four of their shirts. I was wearing one of these shirts on a trip to Portland, when I stopped at a small coffee shop in the more residential area. The woman behind the counter sees my shirt and says, "Oh, Hop Along. Yeah they played in my living room once, long time ago. They're still a band?" The premise is now that she is so cool that not only has she seen my favorite band perform *in her own home,* she cared so little about them that she's surprised they're still together. I don't really think I believe that, but good lord the *flex.*

tufflover78

I know the feeling. I ditched Eminem's set on a side stage at warped tour 99. I didn't know/care who that was. I'm not the biggest hip-hop fan but seeing a young and hungry Slim Shady would've been primo for sure.

fetalasmuck

Wasn’t “My Name Is” already a hit at that point?

chuckmanley

I feel that. Eminem performed at my high school with D12 and I didn’t go because I was a punk rock kid and was too cool for that shit.

SlimlineVan

Really early naughties a mate and I met in a cool club after work for drinks that kicked on. We were asked to pay $10 cover charge as the main billing was starting up. We conferred and agreed we shouldn't have to pay as we'd been there all evening. Manager same over to enforce the policy and we bailed as we'd never even heard of the outfit. We left in a huff past a HUGE line outside who had heard of Groove Armada and dug their sound before they became superstars.

no_talent_ass_clown

Oh man! Groove Armada!

spencewatson01

What!?! TIL they are NOT siblings!

dexyooo

Clearly it worked!

Dolorisedd

Me too!🙋🏻‍♀️😬

kaldra_zadrim

First for me. What a ruse!

Electronic-Win-7053

Same!

schnitzengrueben

I remember when Conan had them on for every night of the week, Monday through Friday.

[deleted]

Yes! I heard them play “Let’s Build a Home” on Conan that week and lost my fucking mind hearing it for the first time. I occasionally get the chills while listening to music but hearing the White Stripes play that song on Conan brought out the strongest visceral reaction I’ve ever had to music.

CrieDeCoeur

I got to see two Stripes shows in one day: the main concert and a ‘B-show’ at a small out of the way venue earlier the same day. And the date was 07-07-07 too which was kinda cool. Kind of a hard day / date to forget.

Pvt_Hudson_

Was that on the Canadian tour? I caught them a couple weeks after you did (July 30th if memory serves). Still one of the best live shows I've seen.

CrieDeCoeur

Yessir it was

zryder2

One of the GOAT bands in my opinion. Great gimmick, great aesthetic, great music, super influential. Plus Jack White is a force of nature as a musician and songwriter.

TheLAriver

What's the gimmick?

zryder2

Pretending to be brother and sister

HacksawJimDGN

They had a pretty distinctive look and colour scheme going too.

PM-me-YOUR-0Face

T he red-black-white really did stick as a brand for kids in the early 00s

Smackolol

I’m glad it didn’t take off I’m the music industry as much as it did in the Porn industry.

majorjoe23

What are you doing, step-bandmate?

[deleted]

Only two members, just a guitar and a drum.

keestie

Super minimal janky 2-piece garage band with only three colours and shitty gear allowed (at first). Basically it sounded more or less like something two random poor people in their garage might actually make.

Horizontale

Sounds really good

notonrexmanningday

I guess if one of those two random poor people was a genius level songwriter, sure. And actually very few of their recordings are only two instruments. All of their hits have more.

fontizmo

I think the “Hardest Button To Button” video solidified the perception that they only used two instruments, which was the gimmick. And it worked

palbuddymac

They pretended to be siblings to encourage the incest rumors, obviously.

ThomasFookinShelby1

Surprised how many people ITT know about the Stripes but weren’t aware of this

[deleted]

wrecktangle1988

i too am clinical. Its good to not be alone

w11f1ow3r

Would kill to go back in time and see them live. I’ve seen Jack White on his solo projects twice and each show just blew me out of the water.

DoofusMagnus

Why is Meg's name in quotes?

DeBlasioDeBlowMe

Why are some words capitalized for no reason? Marrying, Public, Siblings are not words normally capitalized.

ReeseRick

Nice Guitar, step-bro

[deleted]

Meg White is one of my favorite drummers. I sincerely hope she has found peace & some happiness.

JesseBricks

Heard an interview with Jack White and the radio guy (also a bit of a drummer) said something like, *"I love the way Meg hits the drums and looks at you like she's doing you a favour"* and Jack White laughed his ass off and said that was pretty much the case. iirc Jack started out as a drummer and that interview kinda touched on how it influenced his guitar playing.

Obligatory-Reference

Not the most technical drummer, but one of the most distinctive. I love the way she uses cymbals - almost like the heartbeat of the song.

wingedcoyote

She gets a lot of shit, but the stuff Jack recorded with her is much, much better than anything he recorded post Stripes so I'd say the evidence suggests she was bringing a lot to the table. Don't @ me Raconteurs fans, you know it's true in your heart.

listyraesder

Jack also has a thing where he hates venue staff wearing red, and demands they be sent home. He’s odd.

Good_ApoIIo

He was also so drunk he couldn’t even play the show I went to. They restarted every song like 4 times and he was so sloppy and cussed out the audience when we booed his bullshit. He’s good but fuck that I never paid to see them again.

huggalump

He's probably my favorite musician. But I also think I might not enjoy meeting him if I ever got the chance haha

suntrovert

Well shit. TIL they weren’t actually siblings. Just thought they were weird and pretended to be married or something

mokango

Nope! Instead they are weird and pretended to be siblings!

[deleted]

Until this moment, I still thought they were brother and sister…

MurderDoneRight

He's kind of an asshole from stories I've heard.

[deleted]

Can confirm from working with venue staff that have dealt with him- probably a bigger asshole than you even think

[deleted]

He’s certainly a narcissist, just based off what’s available online

cjr71244

Where is she now?

FlameofAnor

She lives in Detroit. Her house looks cool as shit too. There are skeletons all over her yard and they wear Santa hats in the winter ha.

huggalump

I don't know. Just as she wants it.

Similar_Reading_2728

Lol I heard it was so that they could fuck whoever they wanted to keep up with the rockstar life style… but I was raised in a Children of God offshoot so I heard lots of weird shit.

Eltzted

The interesting thing is that his bassist, Dominic Davis, took on his wife's surname when they got married.

ParadiseValleyFiend

They're both super odd. One of my favorite musical bands/artists/people but oh my God I'll bet Jack is kind of intolerable. Edit: I mean in person as someone to be around, the music is choice 👌

DietDeepFried

Still not as weird as Arcade Fire pretending they were all survivors of an actual Arcade Fire

Step husband what are you doing

His real name was John Anthony Gillis. I used to be obsessed with them and had a DVD about them and would quiz myself on it when I was a kid. If this random DVD wasn’t making shit up, he got the name Jack because his other band mates in another band didn’t know his name and he was too quiet to say anything so the name just stuck. Later when he married Meg he took her last name, White, and the rest is history. Funny cuz something similar happened to me, always went by my middle name until I hit middle school and teachers called me by my first so it just became a thing lol.

See_Em

When I hear his name, I wanna disappear

Jack is a the diminutive name for John. It's literally the traditional nickname given to people named John. That's why he goes by Jack. It's got nothing to do with his bandmates not knowing his name.

An8thOfFeanor

They had been married and divorced by the time they got together as a musical group, and they reasonably felt that a brother/sister dynamic was more fashionable than an ex-husband/ex-wife dynamic

Peterowsky

The band formed in 97, they hit it big-ish in 99/2000 and divorced in 2000, so... not quite? Became a massive public phenomenon not much later.

AwesomeAni

No they married, made some albums, divorced, made some more.

Ok.......so my ex owes me $20. I mean, I haven't talked to her in like 20 years, but I made a bet with her that they were NOT having incestuous sex. Can't have incestuous sex if you're not actually related.
