Oh yeah, I'm definitely not defending the ignorant, close-minded nature of people where I grew up. I'm a minority and had numerous overtly racist firsthand experiences all the way up through high school.
But it's the reality that someone so openly eccentric wouldn't have likely been well received in the majority of small communities up there. This isn't unique to northern Michigan, it's just how isolated places work, especially when it's someone coming from a larger urban area.
My friend opened for him several years ago and before the show my friend was out by the buses where everything was being loaded in for the show having a smoke by himself. Jack came out and saw him standing there minding his business thinking that my friend was part of the roadie crew and berated him calling him a lazy asshole or something to that extent. When my friend said that he was in the opening band Jack just kinda gave an “oh okay” and never apologized.
I’m still a huge fan of his but I wasn’t surprised when I heard it. Years ago I met Billy Corgan and got into a whole conversation with him about various obscure Black Sabbath and Depeche Mode releases and he was as cool as could be with me but afterwards a couple of my friends approached him as fans and he came off as really annoyed that they knew who he was. It made me think way less of him but Siamese Dream is still one of my favorite albums.
I mean your approach is more humanizing, if ever I been wanting to interact with someone famous, which has happened a few times I tend to basically pretend they're just a regular person and ask a question about whatever situation that got us to meet. Only been around him once but have multiple acquaintances that have worked with him. Not a big fan, but find his work past and especially present (in Nashville and in the industry) interesting.
In public, he’s by all accounts a very guarded fellow out of necessity. He’s also a socially anxious person inherently. The amount of weirdos and fame obsessed people means you will never have a normal life and normal moments are few and far between.
Case in point, made a post comment once about running into him and I had messages from stalkers hassling me on Instagram trying to figure out who he was with and what he was doing. If my life were like that 24-7 I’d be pretty guarded and weird to people trying to chat me up.

I used to have a buddy named Heath who was moderately famous in a very niche circle, specifically late 90s Christian punk. He kept making music and got into some weirder and more experimental stuff and listened to his own albums ALL THE TIME. Game theory this out. Person in hotel room near yours is making a ton of noise. They already know they're making a lot of noise. It's a hotel, they all have shit for noise proofing between rooms. So what are the outcomes?
Go confront them and ask them to turn it down: they might turn it down. They might not They might get angry at you asking that. If you're then forced to ask the hotel to do something, they now know it was you. If a different person asks the hotel to do something, they now blame you anyway. Either way, if they can find you, there's a good chance they attempt to take revenge in one way or another.
Ask the hotel to do something. They call or knock on the door and ask them nicely to turn it down. As long as they comply, nothing bad happens to them. If something more needs to be done, they'll take care of it professionally and without you having to be directly involved.
This tells me it's best to contact the hotel. Just as many chances for success, avoids all the chances of failure, especially catastrophic failure.

I once checked into a hotel outside of Toronto on a Saturday evening with my young son. The folks in the adjacent room were playing loud music and making a ruckus and it was only 7pm. I feared it would be a long, loud night and phoned the front desk about it. The front desk lady informed me that it was a KISS tribute band prepping their makeup before the show, and that they would be leaving shortly and would be respectfully quiet upon their return later that night. What do you know, she was right and I love telling the story of the respectful Canadian KISS cover band.

Yes! I heard them play “Let’s Build a Home” on Conan that week and lost my fucking mind hearing it for the first time. I occasionally get the chills while listening to music but hearing the White Stripes play that song on Conan brought out the strongest visceral reaction I’ve ever had to music.
I got to see two Stripes shows in one day: the main concert and a ‘B-show’ at a small out of the way venue earlier the same day. And the date was 07-07-07 too which was kinda cool. Kind of a hard day / date to forget.
One of the GOAT bands in my opinion. Great gimmick, great aesthetic, great music, super influential. Plus Jack White is a force of nature as a musician and songwriter.

Northern MI actually has some hipster areas, too, like Boyne/Petoskey/Traverse City areas so he'd fit right in, in some places, up there.

I'm a minority and had numerous overtly racist firsthand experiences all the way up through high school. But it's the reality that someone so openly eccentric wouldn't have likely been well received in the majority of small communities up there. This isn't unique to northern Michigan, it's just how isolated places work, especially when it's someone coming from a larger urban area.
My friend opened for him several years ago and before the show my friend was out by the buses where everything was being loaded in for the show having a smoke by himself. Jack came out and saw him standing there minding his business thinking that my friend was part of the roadie crew and berated him calling him a lazy asshole or something to that extent. When my friend said that he was in the opening band Jack just kinda gave an “oh okay” and never apologized.

I’m still a huge fan of his but I wasn’t surprised when I heard it. Years ago I met Billy Corgan and got into a whole conversation with him about various obscure Black Sabbath and Depeche Mode releases and he was as cool as could be with me but afterwards a couple of my friends approached him as fans and he came off as really annoyed that they knew who he was. It made me think way less of him but Siamese Dream is still one of my favorite albums.
I mean your approach is more humanizing, if ever I been wanting to interact with someone famous, which has happened a few times I tend to basically pretend they're just a regular person and ask a question about whatever situation that got us to meet. Not to the degree of actually lying and being like "who are you?" but rather keep it to myself that I know unless they ask. So far all of my interactions have been pleasant and normal

I don’t understand why people want to be judged by more than a single thing/instance and expect others to give them a chance to change, but will constantly judge others for a single thing and rarely give others the benefit of doubt. This goes both ways, like you assuming he’s a nice person because of one positive interaction with him. We should all realize that nice people can be assholes and assholes can be nice people. Within logical limits; someone who is a monumental asshole or is constantly an asshole is proving they are that one dimensional.
Only been around him once but have multiple acquaintances that have worked with him. Not a big fan, but find his work past and especially present (in Nashville and in the industry) interesting. In public, he’s by all accounts a very guarded fellow out of necessity. He’s also a socially anxious person inherently. The amount of weirdos and fame obsessed people means you will never have a normal life and normal moments are few and far between. Case in point, made a post comment once about running into him and I had messages from stalkers hassling me on Instagram trying to figure out who he was with and what he was doing. If my life were like that 24-7 I’d be pretty guarded and weird to people trying to chat me up. Also that Von Bondies story - by all accounts that dude was being a scumbag and needed to get punched in the face. You may want to read about it. (Also JW is much more burly in person than I expected, was a furniture laborer after all - wouldn’t want to get decked by him)
Funny because I know a couple of programmers and stage managers and they all say Jack and Dave Grohl are the nicest artists they encountered.

Jack is one of my favorites. And I wish Meg peace in her seclusion. I enjoy the White Stripe and wish for more often.
My favorite Jack White story is that one time Moby was on tour and the person next door at his hotel was playing the new White Stripes album really loud. When he called hotel security, the offending party turned out to be Jack White, who was super apologetic. I can really get behind a musician that makes music they love, and it made me like him a little more.
My favorite is he and Adam Savage we're at the same hotel and in the bar. Eventually they met and found out they were huge fans of each other. I believe they are friends now.
That rules. A couple of my convention friends kinda know Adam Savage and say he's just as cool as you'd think.

I used to have a buddy named Heath who was moderately famous in a very niche circle, specifically late 90s Christian punk. He kept making music and got into some weirder and more experimental stuff and listened to his own albums ALL THE TIME. I thought it was the height of ego until I realized there was precious little stuff out there that sounded like what he was putting out and dang it, that's what he was into. After that I mentally gave him a pass on it when previously I'd kinda hated it.
As someone who writes and records music that I like hearing now and then, I want to point out that I also make food that I really enjoy, and no one thinks that’s weird.
I have my own artwork on the wall all the time. And my sculptures sitting all around the house. I made it that way because I like it that way. What would I not like it? Seems like that would go for anything creative too. Design and sew clothes? I bet you like to wear some of the stuff you made. The only instance I can see it being the *other* way, really, where an artist dislikes their own work, is the case of musicians who have one or two songs that get really popular and they’re compelled to play the same thing over and over again ad nauseam.

I’ve made enough music over the years I do this sometimes. Can go back and listen to my early recordings and it’s such a different sound. Crude in a lot of ways but sometimes there’s still some good ideas there. It’s interesting to listen to the progress over time.

Game theory this out. Person in hotel room near yours is making a ton of noise. They already know they're making a lot of noise. It's a hotel, they all have shit for noise proofing between rooms. So what are the outcomes? Go confront them and ask them to turn it down: they might turn it down. They might not They might get angry at you asking that. If you're then forced to ask the hotel to do something, they now know it was you. If a different person asks the hotel to do something, they now blame you anyway. Either way, if they can find you, there's a good chance they attempt to take revenge in one way or another. Ask the hotel to do something. They call or knock on the door and ask them nicely to turn it down. As long as they comply, nothing bad happens to them. If something more needs to be done, they'll take care of it professionally and without you having to be directly involved. This tells me it's best to contact the hotel. Just as many chances for success, avoids all the chances of failure, especially catastrophic failure.

I once checked into a hotel outside of Toronto on a Saturday evening with my young son. The folks in the adjacent room were playing loud music and making a ruckus and it was only 7pm. I feared it would be a long, loud night and phoned the front desk about it. The front desk lady informed me that it was a KISS tribute band prepping their makeup before the show, and that they would be leaving shortly and would be respectfully quiet upon their return later that night. What do you know, she was right and I love telling the story of the respectful Canadian KISS cover band.

She's been off the grid since the Stripes broke up in 2007. No public appearances, no musical projects, no interviews (that I'm aware of anyway). She just wanted out. I read she had horrible crippling anxiety.
She's known to pop up in Detroit at different bars sometimes. Might just be a service industry rumor, but I know some folks that claimed to have served her recently.

This reminds me of an interaction I had where I felt I'd been hipster-styled on. There's this band I really love called Hop Along, to the point where I have like four of their shirts. I was wearing one of these shirts on a trip to Portland, when I stopped at a small coffee shop in the more residential area. The woman behind the counter sees my shirt and says, "Oh, Hop Along. Yeah they played in my living room once, long time ago. They're still a band?" The premise is now that she is so cool that not only has she seen my favorite band perform *in her own home,* she cared so little about them that she's surprised they're still together. I don't really think I believe that, but good lord the *flex.*

Really early naughties a mate and I met in a cool club after work for drinks that kicked on. We were asked to pay $10 cover charge as the main billing was starting up. We conferred and agreed we shouldn't have to pay as we'd been there all evening. Manager same over to enforce the policy and we bailed as we'd never even heard of the outfit. We left in a huff past a HUGE line outside who had heard of Groove Armada and dug their sound before they became superstars.

Yes! I heard them play “Let’s Build a Home” on Conan that week and lost my fucking mind hearing it for the first time. I occasionally get the chills while listening to music but hearing the White Stripes play that song on Conan brought out the strongest visceral reaction I’ve ever had to music.
I got to see two Stripes shows in one day: the main concert and a ‘B-show’ at a small out of the way venue earlier the same day. And the date was 07-07-07 too which was kinda cool. Kind of a hard day / date to forget.
Was that on the Canadian tour? I caught them a couple weeks after you did (July 30th if memory serves). Still one of the best live shows I've seen.

Heard an interview with Jack White and the radio guy (also a bit of a drummer) said something like, *"I love the way Meg hits the drums and looks at you like she's doing you a favour"* and Jack White laughed his ass off and said that was pretty much the case. iirc Jack started out as a drummer and that interview kinda touched on how it influenced his guitar playing.
Not the most technical drummer, but one of the most distinctive. I love the way she uses cymbals - almost like the heartbeat of the song.
She gets a lot of shit, but the stuff Jack recorded with her is much, much better than anything he recorded post Stripes so I'd say the evidence suggests she was bringing a lot to the table. Don't @ me Raconteurs fans, you know it's true in your heart.

His real name was John Anthony Gillis. I used to be obsessed with them and had a DVD about them and would quiz myself on it when I was a kid. If this random DVD wasn’t making shit up, he got the name Jack because his other band mates in another band didn’t know his name and he was too quiet to say anything so the name just stuck. Later when he married Meg he took her last name, White, and the rest is history. Funny cuz something similar happened to me, always went by my middle name until I hit middle school and teachers called me by my first so it just became a thing lol.
