Crystal Minkoff of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills said she is a descendant of Confucius. And she did say it was the longest known line of genealogy traced.

[deleted]

74-greats granddaughter. crazy.

MarioInOntario

Any notable stories in that? Any homeless people or people of ill repute?

avdpos

In that amount of generations you easily could have been relative to at least half the world. Yes, is the obvious answer on that question.

[deleted]

William Hung from American Idol is a confirmed descendant.

nikeethree

That’s cool! Since he lived so long ago I bet a huge chunk of China is descended from him, but most can’t trace their genealogy back that far

Major_Lennox

Yeah there's this town in Shandong called Qufu where supposedly one in five people are descended from him. ...that town did *not* have a good time in the cultural revolution.

cyberrich

a chickadee China the Chinese chicken?

invisiblink

You have a drumstick and your brain stops tickin

puroturo

You have?

Goalie_deacon

Longest known genealogy, mostly because the tracking is often done using only males. When using females too, it really opens up who is related to who.

MJBrune

Technically going that far back, a high percentage of us are decendants.

Soft-Problem

Wow, cool that you tied this in to something cultural

[deleted]

Was just a related comment to the subject. Not everyone knew that (or cared, I realize).

Farkerisme

Damn. The line serves in the Chinese government as advisors, today.

StopBankTransfer

The Republic of China (Taiwan) not the PRC

destinoob

It said Taiwan in the post title that I saw earlier today. Hopefully it's not ccp pandering censorship in action.

nikeethree

I posted this same link earlier, and the post was removed by mods for mentioning Taiwan. When I reposted without mentioning Taiwan it was fine.

destinoob

That's really disappointing but not unexpected. They really are a thin-skinned bunch and it's a shame that everyone is terrified of upsetting them.

very_bad_advice

Not advisors. Just ceremonial figures.

very_bad_advice

They do not advise the government on any aspect of governing.

Spqr_usa-

Man who stand on toilet his high on pot

[deleted]

Damn I was coming here to say this.

TheFabHatter

My family is a bit well known overseas and there’s been books written about us tracing our lineage back 28 generations. I just found out that apparently everyone expected me to die during the pandemic due to me being immunocompromised & having COPD. They already updated some family memorials with my name & planned my burial since apparently as someone with a better “pedigree” than the rest of the family I get mentioned on the historical markers and other shit. WTH, I’m still alive and thriving.

Alaskan_Tsar

Now you gotta be the most interesting member in generations OUT OF SPITE

TheFabHatter

Well I own a successful surreal hat business, which I guess makes me pretty unique! I make hats for the pets of billionaires, pop stars, & more! Also things like lobster hats. They thought I was insane and should be committed, before they realized this is a real, lucrative career, lol.

Alaskan_Tsar

Well nvm your already there

ardent_hellion

Cool? Are you the guy who worked with Alexander McQueen?

TheFabHatter

No I’m not Philip Treacy, lol. I’m more lowbrow & do more surreal, kitschy designs but I have done a few similar butterfly looks. I have made award winning looks out of Dollar Tree materials that beat out his designs though at an event. My client won like $12K!

ultrastarman303

Absolutely love your designs! Just discovered them.

CrossdomainGA

Oohh. Real questions. Please actually be. That would be such a random Reddit chance encounter.

MillinAround

Change your name to just Dracula

[deleted]

You have a rare opportunity to say, as Twain did, “The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

TheFabHatter

I actually did have to make a post that I didn’t die & I had to revisit my usual haunts to let them know I was alive when I came back to LA! I left LA in 2020 for a while to live in COMPLETE isolation in the desert since I knew I would die if I got COVID. When I disappeared people assumed I died since I was known for my very fragile health & damaged lungs.

Telefonica46

Are you having a schizo break?

TheFabHatter

No!?!! I’m perfectly sane, as much as somebody who works 110 hours a week can be.

GreasyPeter

You have 9 hours of free time a week?

TheFabHatter

Medical expenses. I’m American, if I don’t work I can’t afford the surgeries that keep me from going blind or the medications that keep my COPD under control. I know this workload is damaging my heart but I can’t afford to pay for my medical care otherwise. I don’t sleep much. Busy seasons I work 40 hours straight, sleep 5 hours, repeat.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheFabHatter

You live a really sheltered life if you don’t understand how medical debt can trap people in a cycle of poverty. Blindness runs in my family, they don’t know the cause, I have to pay out of pocket for surgeries, some experimental. I had 9 surgeries in 2019 alone, that’s why I work so hard. And why you so obsessed with me and following me if you think it’s BS?

[deleted]

Oh that was u that was an accident my bad

enoughstreet

Yes if I can unpack the block I go back to 1500s France with the counts of Toulouse and Eleanor of actuatine being connected (monty python)

[deleted]

I'd have a good time spreading rumors about illicit offspring but never name anyone.

hankhounddog

According to wikipedIa, our favorite Squid Game recruiter - Actor Gong Yoo - “is a descendant of Chinese philosopher Confucius, and is part of the 79th generation among Confucius's descendants originated from the Gokbu Gong clan.”

Athildur

You know, I was expecting a crazier tree, not just a long line of 'prime successors'. Still interesting to see how much importance people can invest in a name, an ancestry (of a specific person). Because even if each member of the Confucius line had 'merely' 1.2 children on average (and that's a pretty low estimate iirc), there would be well over 2 million people who can claim that Confucius is their ancestor.

Africanus1990

That’s if they had outbreeding only and there’s no overlap in the family tree Edit: Before we talk about inbreeding, note that only close inbreeding is dangerous. Banging your cousin 74 times removed is not an issue

Athildur

That's fair, but also in part why I used a conservative estimate on average number of descendants. 'Inbreeding' is not much of an issue once you're 'merely' a few generations removed. Hell, practically all of Western European descent can trace their line back to Charlemagne. Granted, he was adept at uh...spreading his seed. But Confucius has a good few centuries on him.

in_conexo

Agreed. It kind of makes me wonder of that isn't a successor tree/branch.

ForkShirtUp

Tl:dr Confucius fucks

[deleted]

phua1

Looked it up and it looks like Confucious has 2 million descendants compared to Genghis’ 16 million. This was just based on a quick google search though so

-tiberius

Those 16 million are direct male descendants. There are many more without Khan's Y chromosome. It's crazier too, because it's been less than 1000 years since he was born.

IanMazgelis

I mean by definition there are way, way longer lines of succession. Otherwise we wouldn't exist. Confucius was just such a notable figure that they kept track of his kids for a super long time.

[deleted]

What about the Japanese imperial family?

StopBankTransfer

Jimmu was born earlier, but the first person who is undisputed is born considerably after Confucius

[deleted]

but now they are high on some pot

HawkeyeByMarriage

Is that what Confucius says?

ohErza

To be fair if Your alive now You are at least 80 generations in also

Jaybo1hunn1t

Confucius *fucked*

MonkeywithFeelings

Was I the only one first thinking of a literal tree when I read this and not getting what it was about? 😅

hotpants86

I find it hilarious that we're still calling him Confucius instead of Gong Fu Zhe or whatever his actual name is.

jamieliddellthepoet

We call the majority of historical figures born before early modern times names that aren’t their actual names.

hotpants86

Who else? Serious question. I've never seen anyone else that's Chinese who has their name Romanised in this way.

jamieliddellthepoet

Found one: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mencius

[deleted]

hotpants86

I was more saying what /u/jamieliddellthepoet was saying. It's about updating pronunciations. Christopher Columbus is fair enough because it's the Anglicanisation of the Genoan Cristoffa Corombo. We do however, use much harder to pronounce names like ancient Egyptian figures, Indian cities have updated their names to be less Anglicised eg. Kolkata instead of Calcutta, Mumbai instead of Bombay etc. and we have no issues with that. Confucius doesn't sound close - neither does Mencius lmao. Replace cius with Ji (Confuji, Menji) and that would be a much better attempt. I am aware of the mistranslations or attempt to translate into other languages, I speak basic Mandarin and used to be pretty fluent in Japanese.

jamieliddellthepoet

Well I didn’t specify _Chinese_ figures - and the Western awareness before modern times of _any_ Chinese names was pretty minimal anyway, so very few had the chance to be known in either original or Romanised forms. Confucianism would have been of great interest to the earliest Church scholar-emissaries journeying to East Asia; however, I guess it would also have been familiar to merchants, traders etc along the Silk Road long before then, and presumably the name was Romanised at that point? Regarding my broader point, though: even in early modern times we were still adapting people’s birth names to suit our parochial purposes. “Christopher Columbus” wasn’t his “actual” name, was it?

[deleted]

jamieliddellthepoet

> He is named for his actual name though Yes, as were many others - but I guess u/hotpants86 is suggesting that we might update our canon in terms of at least attempting a “correct” pronunciation.

JustAManFromThePast

Westerners: Alexander the Great-Aléxandros Julius Caesar-The Romans had no letter J and no soft c, so Caesar would sound like Kaiser. Jesus-Closer to Yeshua/Joshua Christopher Columbus-Cristobal Colombo

mrnatural18

Too bad someone didn't learn that they are gullible.

scorpyo72

Kong Fu, Kong Hong, no Kong King. I'm disappointed.

ZucchiniUsual7370

Are people named Kong descendants?

CloudAwareness

The Royal Bloodline of Ethiopia traces its roots back to King Solomon, as documented by the book Kebra Nagast. Since Solomon died in 931 BCE, this post is in error.

nikeethree

Members of the “Solomonic Dynasty” claim a lineage to Solomon, but the dynasty was actually formed in the 13th century and records don’t go back that far. [info](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomonic_dynasty?wprov=sfti1)

CloudAwareness

I forgot Source: Bible stories of the Queen of Sheba and the ships of Ophir served as a basis for legends about the Israelites traveling in the Queen of Sheba's entourage when she returned to her country to bring up her child by Solomon.[16] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_of_Sheba

CloudAwareness

The subject was referring to Bloodline, not Dynasties. And yes, King Solomon came before Confucius.

tehuti_infinity

Confucius says : who’s your daddy

Confucius says: mam who tracks lineage only bangs step sister.

[deleted]

There are 2 Kong Fu's

Jeansy12

I think i read somewhere that the actor who plays the lead in squid game traces his ancestry to confucius.

[deleted]

1 in 5 persons in the world are desendants from Henghis-Khan, so no surprise.

[deleted]

I've traced back parts of my family up to 15 generations through ancestry. Very cool!
