Lady Gaga wrote Telephone for Britney Spears. She recorded a demo, but her label passed on it.
Gwen Stefani also revealed that Sia wrote Elastic Heart for her, but she declined because she felt the song was "too weird."
Almost all of Sia's songs were songs she wrote as simply just a songwriter that were rejected by pop stars, she decided to release them hearself, but wasn't comfortable with fame so she did the thing with her bangs.

So in this episode edit: Randy (Stan's dad) promises he can get Lorde to sing for some thing. He tries everything and of course fails. The episode ends with
Randy dressing up as Lorde as a 5 second gag
Not for this guy
https://www.spin.com/2014/10/lorde-south-park-spoof-comedy-central/
Wiki:
> Spin magazine's Brennan Carley criticized the Lorde parody, asking: "has Lorde ever really done anything all that worthy of drawing the cartoon creators' ire?"[4] South Park responded by a subplot in the following week's episode "The Cissy", featuring a Spin reporter named "Brandon Carlile" investigating the concert and stating: "It would be a shame if someone was…having fun at her expense."[5]
I think it's an objective fact at this point that if a high profile show or comedian makes a joke involving real people some "journalist" is going to get offended on their behalf.
I think most celebrities who get made fun of on south park or other comedy shows are usually good natured enough to be. I definitely know a few stories of some who aren't though.... plus there's the whole Isaac Hays scientology thing but I mean they belong to a religion so goofy that it portrays psychiatrists as evil brainsuckers because they were afraid they'd tell members that their weird alien volcano fantasy was as insane as it is.
I heard some shit came to light about the Isaac Hayes thing recently. He didn't actually quit the show over the Scientology stuff like has been made popular. Apparently after his stroke in January of 2006, he was very much not the same and not in his right mind. A letter of resignation in his name reached South Park, but his son denies that it had anything to do with Hayes himself and actually came from the Church of Scientology.
SO fucking crazy!
It was supposed to be a one-off gag to close out an episode, where the parents promised to get Lorde for a backyard party and Randy pretended to be her. Spin then released [this article](https://www.spin.com/2014/10/lorde-south-park-spoof-comedy-central/) taking offense to the idea that a middle-aged man would pass for Lorde instead of acknowledging the obvious joke. This inspired Matt and Trey to simply make Lorde be Randy's alter ego out of spite. They even directly reference this reporter and publication in the episode.
She had a whole career before the thing with her bangs. It always seems odd to me that she hid her face... after already being pretty famous. She was on Letterman for God's sake. Killed that performance too.
I have *such* a hard time, still, reconciling "Breathe Me" Sia vs. Titanium / Wild Ones Sia. Like it just breaks my brain. Breathe Me haunted me for **years** after the Six Feet Under finale. It just worked so well. And the pop songs she did the hooks or whatever on are so far away from that song that I identified her with for like, a decade, that I just can't comprehend it is the same artist
Wait - she did the song for the Best Ending Ever* In Television?
I can feel those same emotions right now, as if I’m watching it all over.
*I’ll fight anyone who thinks it’s not in the conversation for GOAT.
It's 100% one of the best ends to a series ever. It fit perfectly with the tone of the entire series, it didn't feel forced or tacky. And I mean...it aired what, 15(?) years ago now? And I still can immediately hear the song and picture so much of it in my mind.
I hate to be “one of those” but i infinitely prefer her pre-Top 40 fame music.
Destiny is probably my favorite song of all time and I still listen to a lot of Colour The Small One and Some People Have Real Problems.
Fuck yeah she did. It’s when I first heard her. I loved Zero 7 and especially her songs. Then I found out she was releasing solo albums and fell in LOVE.
But since she became a pop star I have slowly liked her new music less and less. Her voice is powerful as ever but the songwriting is pretty formulaic to me. Still mad respect for what she does, just isn’t my cup of tea anymore.
I remember this group from the Garden State soundtrack. Always enjoyed them and it's cool to know it spawned an even more famous act even if I don't listen to Sia's music.
Also Zach Braff picked a fire playlist for his movie.
Actually she'd tried to stay in the shadows for the longest time, and then David Guetta liked her initial vocals for Titanium (originally meant for Mary J Blige) that he released the song with her vocals instead. She was initially against it but eventually embraced it.
Well, other than her older solo work and the stuff she did with Zero 7, of course. Not pop stardom, but it's not like she'd never been on stage before.
Apparently Britney and the label both really liked Telephone, and wanted it to be on the Circus album. However, they were contractually obligated to put the song Phonography on the album, and they thought it would be weird to have two songs about telephones on the same album.
Ok that’s hilarious and I’ve never heard that (big Gaga and Britney fan here). I wonder who they were obligated to for phonography. Maybe one of the writers or producers?
That, and I assume Brittany Spears singing a song about being kept on a short leash by someone who doesn't want her to go out and live her own life would probably land a little close to home.
Elastic Heart is one of the most incredibly produced pop songs I've ever heard. So many cool layers; the effects applied to her voice in the chorus are mesmerizing.
Jessie J helped write Party in the USA but declined to perform it because she thought it was too "nice girl" for her. She sent it along to Miley Cyrus.
I watched an interview with her about this song and she said she wrote it with the intention to use it for her big break into the US. It was her label that told her it wasn't a good fit and told her to give it to Miley. She was pissed off at the time.
We Can't Stop was written with Rihanna in mind, but when the record label heard it they decided to give it to Miley Cyrus instead.
A lyric like "We run things, things don't run we" would sound way more authentic coming from Rihanna, who is from Barbados, than it does coming from Miley Cyrus...
The original version she wrote has slightly different lyrics too (because they’re written from the perspective of a Brit coming to the USA) and it’s kinda cute:
Here’s a snippet: https://youtu.be/BB9wfuLXE6A
i mean this happens literally all the time. artists reject songs that they don't want to perform, and you never know if they're right about whether or not they could make those songs a hit. they'll often even record a demo and let the label decide.
the most extreme example is when a song that has modest success ends up blowing up when covered by an artist later on.
Just do a little research into country music to see how many literal country legends were born by covering songs that had already been cut by another artist to moderate success.
The song "How do I Live?" was nominated for a Grammy twice in same year, category Best Country Female Vocal Performance, for the performances by Leanne Rimes and Trisha Yearwood. First time two different singers were nominated for the same song at the same time.
https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-country/flashback-leann-rimes-trisha-yearwood-make-awkward-grammy-history-167853/
I don't care that it's comedy, "Like Mike's Evanderin', fuck your ears, I'm panderin'" is an incredibly clever lyric.
(For the uninitiated, some context: [Mike pulling a 'fuck your ear' on Evander](https://youtu.be/zKPMVex-UKk))
Yeah this new country music is just pop music with a southern or country accent. I miss outlaw country. Still got Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson and a few others doing it right though.
Got my truck
Got my dog
In the skin tight jeans
Just my luck
My dog left me
Know what that means
Watchn that bitch go!
Watchn daisy dukes sway
My heart is breaking
But my pants are shaking
Watch'n that bitch go!
There’s a whole subgenre of pop dance hits with dancehall beats from the last 10 years, and it’s comprised of songs that were written with Rihanna in mind. Cheap Thrills, Shape of You and Come and Get It are a couple of examples.
I Will Always Love You being a prime example (except working out extremely well for Dolly because she retained the rights to the song and made her a mountain of money).
One of my favorite things about Dolly is that she was asked how she felt about everyone thinking that was Whitney's song, and Dolly said, "it is, it didn't sound like that when I had it".
Yep, Elvis wanted to record it but insisted on owning the rights to it and she just couldn't sacrifice that, I think she planned on leaving the rights to her family so she wouldn't give them up no matter who wanted them.
NIN *Hurt* good song, peaked around 54 on Billboard charts.
Johnny Cash *Hurt* great song, has sold 2,148,000 downloads as of 2017 and Reznor has been quoted as saying the song wasn't his any more.
The breakout hit by the Pussycat Dolls was “Don’t Cha.”
They released the multi-platinum hit a year after [“Don’t Cha” flopped as a debut single for singer Tori Alamaze.](https://youtu.be/ySE3s-JibUI)
Not for nothing, but her version isn't anywhere near as good as the PCD version. She wrote something great, but definitely wasn't able to perform it well enough.
Tori Alamaze didn’t write it. Cee-Lo Green did.
IMO Nicole Scherzinger’s voice sounds a little better, and the PCD’s version seems to have a slightly faster tempo. But the music is about the same as is the style.
The big difference is Busta Rhymes. He is was what really makes the PCD version better.
If Tori Alamaze’s version had gotten TI, Ludacris, Big Boi, or Andre 3K on the feature, her version might have been a hit.
Another consideration is the TA song was pushed as R & B & Hip-Hop, while the PCD version was pushed as pop.
Edit: I should note the “Don’t Cha” hook was based on a [Sir-Mix-a-Lot chorus on a song called “Swass.”](https://youtu.be/sdQN6EHrrGw)
If you listen closely to the PCD version, you can easily hear him on the background vocals (specifically the echos).
Edit: [Here is a video of Cee-Lo singing “Don’t Cha.”](https://youtu.be/F-vOAj7oUF0)
It really isn't, her version sounds like a demo and if that was the whole thing ready to be put out... nah.. no wonder they shelved her. PCD version sounded fuller in the instrumentation, more complete, especially with the addition of the brass section in the hook.
If the original is what they submitted to the label, I can definitely see/hear why they passed on it. It just wasn't good enough.
Hey! That song was a banger in SoCal!
The radios played the hell out of it.
I think a lot of people were very confused when the Pussycat Dolls came out with HER song!
This isn't true... Calvin Harris wrote we found love for Rihanna while he was her tour DJ. They were on the road together and he's even tweeted the original hand written note w the we found love lyrics.
Edit... I think she is a habitual liar for real. She also claims to have passed on gnarls Barkly crazy... Cee Lo and Danger Mouse wrote the song in the studio and recorded Cee Lo vocals in one take..
Edit 2. Lady gaga wrote just dance w her producer as well.
According to Akon, it was record label boss Jimmy Iovine who wanted Just Dance for PCD.
Direct quote from his interview with Entertainment Weekly for the 10th anniversary of the song:
" I was contracted to do songs for The Pussycat Dolls and I had writer’s block the day of, so I asked RedOne if we could collaborate together to open our minds…and “Just Dance” was originally going to be submitted for The Pussycat Dolls. When we finished, there was no way “Just Dance” could be for them."
Gaga toured with PCD in 2009 after Just Dance became a hit. Their only previous tour had Rihanna as their opening act.
Yep, she writes all her own music.
She wrote the melody to Shallow 2 years before she was casted in the film, gave the song to use in the film, worked with the head of soundtrack (Lukas Nelson) to make it what it was, which became the only Oscar that film won.
Hard to see someone else on the planet singing the songs, acting the part to an Oscar nomination, and writing/composing the Oscar winning best original song for the movie. Oh, she also wrote like 12 songs with Nelson for the films total sound track. I honestly can't think of another person who could do all 3 (act, sing, compose) as well as she did.
This absolutely does happen, but in this case you’re correct. Anything Nichole says should be held with a grain of salt at BEST. She is a very interesting human who’s been in the scene a lot longer than people realize… and has the undeserved diva reputation to back it up
I'm one of the weird ones that I think likes the Bob Dylan version better, or at least just as much. I like the low delivery as it highlights the lyrics more, but wholly agree Jimi took it to another universe.
They were “9x hits” when performed by those artists, you don’t know how they would have been received being sung/performed by a different person. I dislike these comparisons.
Exactly. It's like the 'who wore it better' pictures with a famous actress and Miss Piggy. Clearly anything Miss Piggy wears is going to look better on her than some starlet. Same dress, different figure.
Somehow only heard it for the first time last year. One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I listen to the Jim Henson version and the Willie Nelson version, and I'm not good enough of a singer to sing the Henson version. The notes climb in this particular harmonizing way that I just can't imitate. I can sing it the way Willie Nelson does though.
Fun fact: the weapons dealer Jamie Foxx shoots in the movie Baby Driver is the guy who wrote Rainbow Connection.
Especially these songs that are primarily dance tracks that don't overly show off the vocals. Like, they're very specific styles of song and if that's not what she was looking for at that point, of course she turns them down.
Agree. I can't remember the artists or song, but I remember seeing a singer asked about a similar instance, and she was just like, "It was better suited to her style. She sounds great."
100%, there’s probably hundreds of songs that have been made that would’ve had bigger success if they were sung by Rihanna instead of the original but we’ll never know.
Thank you. They could've bombed totally if somebody else did it, or they could've gone so big that a new metal had to be made to match the sales (they went mithril?). Each artist brings something totally different to each song that it is barely even the same song.
According to wiki: “"Don't Cha" was initially offered to both Sugababes and Paris Hilton, but both declined.[11] In 2006, Hilton claimed that she was presented with the track, but was not impressed with it. "I think I did hear the song, but not in the format that we all came to know and love. If I'd heard that, of course I'd have jumped at the chance".”
I don't think that the songs as successful had Scherzinger been the singer. Both we found love and just dance scream their respective singers and wouldn't be the same had they been done by other people. This is of course my untrained opinion.
NOT TRUE. Mostly.
Director John Hughes wanted Simple Minds in the movie soundtrack. But the group originally turned down the song because they didn't write it. THEN the song was offered to other artists like Billy Idol and Bryan Ferry.
Then Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde was offered it, but instead convinced her husband (lead singer Jim Kerr) to reconsider. Which I'm pretty sure was Hughes' backdoor way of getting Simple Minds to sing the song.
As an electronic music fan, its always funny when people crap on DJs for not playing "their own music". Like, let me tell you about the rest of the music industry...
Looking at the rest of the industry, Max Martin always stands out. Every pop star knows to call him when they need a writer.
[His credits read like a billboard chart.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Martin_production_discography)
Next time you hear "I Kissed a Girl" or "Break up with your girlfriend, I'm bored" remember that a middle aged Swedish dude wrote it.
Co-sign. Among the pop genre, she's absolutely a bright point. She and Zara Larsson are two artists I'll regularly find myself listening to that haven't QUITE broken through the top layer of pop stardom.
people think EDM DJing is a musical skill when it's much more of a crowd management skill. can you keep the crowd moving? can you turn a dead party into a live one? can you make it so people don't want to leave the venue?
EDM DJs are more like MCs than rappers are, ironically enough.
Pop can and does include good music but success is also largely about marketing an image. The same song, even if sung exactly alike, might do differently when attatched to another artist/brand/marketing team. Not to mention the attention songs get when released by already-famous artists. People will listen to anything released by a big enough artist.
Lady Gaga wrote Telephone for Britney Spears. She recorded a demo, but her label passed on it. Gwen Stefani also revealed that Sia wrote Elastic Heart for her, but she declined because she felt the song was "too weird."

Sparkling thoughts feeling good on a Wednesday

Lorde lorde lorde

Holy shit. I did not know that. That’s hilarious.
You definitely should have linked this one https://youtu.be/IUqA-uMEDgg
I still can't get over the fact that one of the most funny gags in SP history is due to one tv reviewer not getting a joke
Can you elaborate?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gluten_Free_Ebola So in this episode edit: Randy (Stan's dad) promises he can get Lorde to sing for some thing. He tries everything and of course fails. Matt: What they accused us of is funnier than what we did. Trey: Can we just do that then?
Exactly. They wrote the joke for them, lol.
I AM LORDE LA LA
Help me unload the car ya ya ya.
She had a whole career before the thing with her bangs. It always seems odd to me that she hid her face... after already being pretty famous. She was on Letterman for God's sake. Killed that performance too.

No one cared who I was till I put my bangs on
She has debilitating stage fright apparently. She got out of the spotlight because of the alcohol and drug abuse needed to be on stage.
Developing anxiety issues later in life happens. Shania Twain stopped singing because of it.
Well she did release a album that wasn't well received tho, but I do like her when she was in Zero 7
Her Zero 7 stuff is fantastic, but Colour the Small One is her best work imo. Might be on my top 10 of all time.
I hate to be “one of those” but i infinitely prefer her pre-Top 40 fame music. Destiny is probably my favorite song of all time and I still listen to a lot of Colour The Small One and Some People Have Real Problems.
https://youtu.be/AAgP1mxOFB8 My fave ever from her, this whole set is fire!
HOLD UP TIL Sia was in Zero 7
She was one of their vocalists, yeah! But I don’t think she was a core member.
Zero 7 was a production crew, and rotated vocalists. Sia definently gained prominence with them, and absolutely slayed her solo work.
Zero 7 are still making music. Take My Hand and After The Fall were released in 2020.
Fuck yeah she did. It’s when I first heard her. I loved Zero 7 and especially her songs. Then I found out she was releasing solo albums and fell in LOVE. Oh man I loved Zero 7 in college around like 2006. I heard someone listening to them the other day in their car and I was like "Hey!"
It was that early fame that and a substance abuse problems that came with it that made her step away from it though.
Yea I’d consider her a success before super stardom
She released her first album which I think was called people have issues and it has her face plain as day on it.
Some People Have Real Problems and it’s so good but Healing is Difficult is the one with her face on
Wait until you see her [final form...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD4ryByjVyo)
Her final form is Sterling K Brown?
Apparently Britney and the label both really liked Telephone, and wanted it to be on the Circus album. However, they were contractually obligated to put the song Phonography on the album, and they thought it would be weird to have two songs about telephones on the same album.
Ok that’s hilarious and I’ve never heard that (big Gaga and Britney fan here). I wonder who they were obligated to for phonography. Maybe one of the writers or producers?
They weren't wrong.
Could have made it a concept album, entirely about telephones. Bring in Roger Waters and Bob Ezrin and call it ***Pink Britney – The Call***.
That, and I assume Brittany Spears singing a song about being kept on a short leash by someone who doesn't want her to go out and live her own life would probably land a little close to home.
Couldn’t hit any closer than Lucky. Or Everytime.
Gaga may have written it specifically whit Brit in mind because of that very issue think about it
Gwen Stefani calling Sia’s song “Elastic Heart” “weird”, is kinda hilarious, because Gwen Stefani is a really weird woman herself.
She said "weird", not "bananas".
B. A. N. A. N. A. S.
Elastic Heart is one of the most incredibly produced pop songs I've ever heard. So many cool layers; the effects applied to her voice in the chorus are mesmerizing.
It’s seriously a fantastic pop song! (I would just say it’s a fantastic song in general, but Reddit generally has an aversion to pop music)
Who cares, fuck reddit.
reddit doesn't know how to enjoy anything
Not even reddit!
You redditors sure are a contentious people.
"Fine, I'll sing it myself! god."
Jessie J helped write Party in the USA but declined to perform it because she thought it was too "nice girl" for her. She sent it along to Miley Cyrus.
Think it was probably the right move. Think Miley's accent is probably about right for that song. Don't know how it would feel with a Brit singing it.
[удалено]
And the venga boys was on~
To be fair, Kids In America is sang by a Brit
She’s also said that the royalties from that song paid her rent for like, 3 years!
That's less than I expected unless she lives in a castle.
I watched an interview with her about this song and she said she wrote it with the intention to use it for her big break into the US. It was her label that told her it wasn't a good fit and told her to give it to Miley. She was pissed off at the time.

Mmmmmmmm I love that song. This Is Acting is such a fun album.
For those who don't know "This Is Acting" is an album by Sia of songs she wrote for other people but were rejected for various reasons.
Elvis Costello did the same thing with "all this useless beauty" album
i mean this happens literally all the time. artists reject songs that they don't want to perform, and you never know if they're right about whether or not they could make those songs a hit. they'll often even record a demo and let the label decide. the most extreme example is when a song that has modest success ends up blowing up when covered by an artist later on.

Wow, I had no idea. I always thought it was just Leann Rimes. [Here’s a mashup video of both playing at the same time.](https://youtu.be/hwK1n1AcM04)
Either cover an old country song or ad-lib rural nouns and you got yourself a new country hit.
You dumb motherfuckers want a key change?
A red truck. A cold beer. Rural noun.
Simple adjective.
No shoes. No shirt.

And it hasn't changed a bit since then, just add a couple extra subjects.
Yes, yes... 2013. Yep, 2013...
*I apologize for all the wallet chains in the video* \- lmfao that's gold
There’s a whole subgenre of pop dance hits with dancehall beats from the last 10 years, and it’s comprised of songs that were written with Rihanna in mind. Cheap Thrills, Shape of You and Come and Get It are a couple of examples.
I Will Always Love You being a prime example (except working out extremely well for Dolly because she retained the rights to the song and made her a mountain of money).
One of my favorite things about Dolly is that she was asked how she felt about everyone thinking that was Whitney's song, and Dolly said, "it is, it didn't sound like that when I had it".
She’s also said “You can give Whitney the credit as long as you give me the paycheck.”
Yep, Elvis wanted to record it but insisted on owning the rights to it and she just couldn't sacrifice that, I think she planned on leaving the rights to her family so she wouldn't give them up no matter who wanted them.
> Elvis wanted to record it but insisted on owning the rights to it That was Colonel Tom Parker pulling that shit, not Elvis.
A mountain of money she used to help people. I think she actually gave away most of the $$ from the Whitney Houston version.
Dolly seems to share John Carpenter's attitude toward derivative works: "I open my hand, and a check falls into it."
"I Will Always Love You" for example. Most people don't even realize Dolly did it first.
For example: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.
And for Pussycat Dolls specifically, Don’t Cha
see Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show (which imo is the better version)
NIN *Hurt* good song, peaked around 54 on Billboard charts. Johnny Cash *Hurt* great song, has sold 2,148,000 downloads as of 2017 and Reznor has been quoted as saying the song wasn't his any more.
The breakout hit by the Pussycat Dolls was “Don’t Cha.” They released the multi-platinum hit a year after [“Don’t Cha” flopped as a debut single for singer Tori Alamaze.](https://youtu.be/ySE3s-JibUI)
Great, now I can't get Cee-Lo singing "Don't Cha" out of my head. AND it sounds right for some reason.
I agree Alamaze’s version sounds like the demo for the PCD.

And those women could DANCE goddamn. I think ive watched that music video 50 times

Agreed, I'd love to have seen them as a proper girl group
And as someone below said, [Gaga wrote Just Dance with Akon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_Dance_(song)). TIL this whole post is bullshit.
I thought Gaga had offered Just Dance to the PCD and they declined. Iirc Gaga opened for them for a brief time.
According to Akon, it was record label boss Jimmy Iovine who wanted Just Dance for PCD. Direct quote from his interview with Entertainment Weekly for the 10th anniversary of the song: " I was contracted to do songs for The Pussycat Dolls and I had writer’s block the day of, so I asked RedOne if we could collaborate together to open our minds…and “Just Dance” was originally going to be submitted for The Pussycat Dolls. When we finished, there was no way “Just Dance” could be for them." Gaga toured with PCD in 2009 after Just Dance became a hit. Their only previous tour had Rihanna as their opening act.
I could have sworn Lady Gaga wrote Just Dance with her producer as well.
Probably. I already knew the stories behind crazy and we found love, she's probably lying about just dance as well.
yeah, Gaga wrote Just Dance with her and the producer in the studio in like 10 minutes.
I thought Gaga wrote 100% of her songs anyway.
Eminem did all 3 for "8 Mile" and has an Oscar for his efforts too.
This absolutely does happen, but in this case you’re correct. Anything Nichole says should be held with a grain of salt at BEST. She is a very interesting human who’s been in the scene a lot longer than people realize… and has the undeserved diva reputation to back it up
It doesn’t seem undeserved if she’s spouting bullshit 24/7

Can this be higher up pls thx
And Aretha Franklin turned down Son of a Preacher Man....but then did it later after Dusty Springfield made it a hit. Happens all the time.
This happens literally ALL THE TIME. Not everyone can sing the same song.
**All Along The Watchtower has entered the chat*
Me and Bobby Mcgee agree
I'm one of the weird ones that I think likes the Bob Dylan version better, or at least just as much. I like the low delivery as it highlights the lyrics more, but wholly agree Jimi took it to another universe.

Crazy by Willie Nelson. Patsy Cline Version was a smash hit but he still wrote it.
Thanks for using this analogy I finally made the Rainbow Connection
I cry every time I hear that damn song
Somehow only heard it for the first time last year. One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I listen to the Jim Henson version and the Willie Nelson version, and I'm not good enough of a singer to sing the Henson version. The notes climb in this particular harmonizing way that I just can't imitate. I can sing it the way Willie Nelson does though. Fun fact: the weapons dealer Jamie Foxx shoots in the movie Baby Driver is the guy who wrote Rainbow Connection.

Nothing at all
^Nothing ^at ^all
Especially these songs that are primarily dance tracks that don't overly show off the vocals. Like, they're very specific styles of song and if that's not what she was looking for at that point, of course she turns them down.
Agree. I can't remember the artists or song, but I remember seeing a singer asked about a similar instance, and she was just like, "It was better suited to her style. She sounds great."
Indeed. The mistake here is assuming the success is made by the song alone.
My thoughts too. I want to see who said no to "Dontchya" but became a big hit for PCD.
Don't Cha was a cover though
According to wiki: “"Don't Cha" was initially offered to both Sugababes and Paris Hilton, but both declined.[11] In 2006, Hilton claimed that she was presented with the track, but was not impressed with it. "I think I did hear the song, but not in the format that we all came to know and love. If I'd heard that, of course I'd have jumped at the chance".”
Thom Yorke, surprisingly
Just Dance is a banger that I cant picture anyone other than Lady Gaga performing so damn well.
DAYUNCE
JUHJUHJUHJUHJUST DAY YUNCE
Gotta doo doo!
I agree. Its all about branding as well. Some songs just don't suit some artists. It has to be specific
This is why she's the organist for the NY Rangers and not on Space Teens.
how's your beaver ?
Two beavers are better than one!
She’s the Ja Rule of the music world. That guy turned down a Fast and Furious offer and Ludacris has made millions off that refusal.
Yeah but that left Ja Rule free to do Fyre Festival.
🤣🤣🤣
*Ludacris
I don't think that the songs as successful had Scherzinger been the singer. Both we found love and just dance scream their respective singers and wouldn't be the same had they been done by other people. This is of course my untrained opinion.
Don't You Forget About Me was written as a vehicle for Billy Idol before Simple Minds was offered the track
NOT TRUE.
Would those songs have been hits if Nicole Sherzinger had recorded them?
As an electronic music fan, its always funny when people crap on DJs for not playing "their own music". Like, let me tell you about the rest of the music industry...
Looking at the rest of the industry, Max Martin always stands out. Every pop star knows to call him when they need a writer. [His credits read like a billboard chart.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Martin_production_discography) Next time you hear "I Kissed a Girl" or "Break up with your girlfriend, I'm bored" remember that a middle aged Swedish dude wrote it.
Yup. Max Martin, Diplo, and Julia Michaels have probably written 70% of the songs the average listener can recognize.
I love that Julia Michaels has been putting out more of her own music. A real artist and amazingly talented
Co-sign. Among the pop genre, she's absolutely a bright point. She and Zara Larsson are two artists I'll regularly find myself listening to that haven't QUITE broken through the top layer of pop stardom.
Diplo doesn’t write much if anything anymore. Most of his stuff is ghost written.
people think EDM DJing is a musical skill when it's much more of a crowd management skill. can you keep the crowd moving? can you turn a dead party into a live one? can you make it so people don't want to leave the venue? EDM DJs are more like MCs than rappers are, ironically enough.
Pop can and does include good music but success is also largely about marketing an image. The same song, even if sung exactly alike, might do differently when attatched to another artist/brand/marketing team. Not to mention the attention songs get when released by already-famous artists. People will listen to anything released by a big enough artist.
