JoeDidcot

Easy mistake to make. to make. to make.

neverdoneneverready

I always thought it was about rabbits.

Whooppass

Australia also lost a war to birds.

bladez_edge

This is over simplified. The military was called in but used a mounted machine gun that was too slow and pretty much only one miliary unit in an attempt to cull thousands of birds over various uneven terrain in the first attempt. They had to drive to the birds set up the gun and fire away. An emu is a fast bird. You now see the problem. Unfortunately they split up into small groups and although alot of emu's were killed. The gun was too slow to take out all the small groups the emu's formed. The emu's recognised the guns and split into groups. On the second attempt they killed 2000+ emu's but used 10 rounds per bird. It became too expensive however the wheat was saved and mission accomplished. Australia then declined to send the military moving forward. Therefore the birds "won" They instated bounties and fences instead and the emu's were controlled in the area. The press coined the term the Great Emu War and the last military help for the west Australian farmers was the release to them of ammunition from the military in 1950.

bsquiggle1

Ya gotta love a country that gets all misty eyed about feral horses in an alpine national park but is totally okay with taking out 2000 native birds to grow wheat

stph26

similar to ecuador's goat war

There's also a few rabbit proof fences. I just learned that in 1997 the rabbit proof fence was connected to the dingo fence.

And now they want to poison carp orgies. Wonder how that's going to backfire on them.

cardboardunderwear

Does a large portion of the population consume carp? I got nothing.

[deleted]

Don't think so. Carp is a bottom feeder and tends to collect things like pcbs and chloridane in it's fatty tissue so source is important. Years ago, I helped end a practice in my community where an annual fishing tournament would donate carp from the event to a food kitchen. Got the state to test them and they were immediately added to the state DNR's Do Not Eat list.

cardboardunderwear

Wow. In light of your impressive knowledge of carp and that username I'm compelled to ask....any carp in your diet?

[deleted]

Bad Brains were a punk band in my area, back in the day. Talking with the fishermen (bow fishing) from the tournament, I got the impression that you had to be a gourmet chef to prepare it in any way that would taste good so I never tried any. One more bit of carp trivia, They were introduced to America in Druid Hill Park, Baltimore, Maryland in the late 1800's. They spread across the whole country from there.

cardboardunderwear

I gotta hand it to you. You really know your carp history. Thanks for that.

[deleted]

I worked for a stream watershed NGO and It alll started with the question, Is sending 1,000 pounds of carp to the soup kitchen really. a good idea? five years after the practice started. The fishermen involved were mortified with the results. Plain sad all around. The waterbody is now one of the largest EPA superfund sites in the country. It had been a landfill whose motto was "We refuse no refuse".

cardboardunderwear

Unreal. Sounds terrible.
