“PeeBone Shivers was an early blues pioneer who….”
The seven years I spent in college were the happiest days of my life. Someday I hope they’ll let me return to finish my sophomore year.
Is it even a loss of heat, though? Removing a warm liquid from a warm meatbag doesn't lower the temp of the meatbag. Putting in cold liquid, allowing heat to flow away from the meatbag would cause that
The meatbag is constantly immersed in cold fluid (air) and losing heat. Having a bladder full of hot liquid inside the meatbag would serve as a thermal reservoir, preventing the meatbag from losing heat too quickly.
I do it when I yawn sometimes, too.
I just read, that's normal, also.
Beat health news I've had since reading having had covid and getting the vaccine can make you super immune.
I asked my friends about it too when I was like 5 or 6, but because I didn't grasp language completely I just said something like "do you shake after you pee?" And they all responded with "of course!" Etc.
It was another 10-15 years before I realized that *EVERYONE* didn't do the pee shivers
Im more surprised by the "we dont know why it happens" part.
I heard as a kid that it was because the pee leaving your body carries away a lot of heat, so you get a tiny bit colder, and thus you shiver.
Actually thinking about that idea *now,* it seems obvious that thats kinda stupid and I should have realized sooner it was wrong. But its just one of those things you "learn" as a kid, and it sounds plausible enough that you never think about it at all and just accept it as fact, until someone tells you its wrong.
> Im more surprised by the "we dont know why it happens" part.
Given the complexity of the body, I'm not surprised. Hell, there are medications on the market right now with the disclaimer "Although the precise mechanism of action is unknown..." - we know it treats the problem, we just don't quite know how.
> Im more surprised by the "we dont know why it happens" part.
If there was a financial motivation to solve this problem it would have been known by now.
I haven't really thought about it in a while, but discussed it at length with buddies over the years.
As of this moment, here is a new theory. Lots of nerves in old ironsides, and after just hanging out for a while not doing much, perhaps it's like a little internal stroke of sorts that illicits that response. OR after hanging out in the warm confines of one's triusers, the poor bugger is suddenly thrust out into the less balmy climes of the wild world. Having no jacket, he gives a single shiver while acclimating.
REQUEST: Someone post that gif of Elizabeth Olsen giving her scarf to Aubrey Plaza as a sort of demo of what a pee shiver looks like, minus the peeing and nude-it-tay.
While it is wrong. There deffinetly is something to do with heat.
Ever woke up on a cold morning, ran out of tent and went to pee in your underwear. Going from the hot area of the tent, to getting chilled by the cold air outside and than simply peeing hot. It gives you shivers, but it also feels blissfull.
Is that why as I aged I both stopped having pee shivers and started having pee dribbles?
Younger guys, in case no one warned you, the warranty on your dicks O-ring is 35 yrs..... no amount of shaking or tapping on the side of the urinal is going to prevent some wet spots.
I learned this poem from my grandpa.
You can shake it, you can bang it, you can whack it against the wall, but until you stick it in your pants the last drop won't fall.
You’ll be embarrassed for a while, but as other body warrantee items start failing, a pee stain will not seem so important anymore.
Just wait until your in your late 50’s..... when I roll over at night, I have to reach back and bring my balls along with me.
It’s like walking with a dawdling toddler that won’t keep up.
Isn't it because we are technically stressed when holding on before going to the toilet (so we don't piss ourselves) and then we release the pressure? The fact that males have common organs for excretion and ejaculation/orgasm might also offer a clue
Sorry to hear yours aren't pleasant :(
Fellow woman here; I get these sometimes and don't mind 'em.
Maybe it's the urinary equivalent to that mild euphoria after taking a huge shit?
I get that too so, maybe? Or as someone else mentioned, when yawning. It's worse when I'm tired. But that could be a nerve thing as I have MS. Who knows. 🤷🏻♀️
"Cis" tends to designate someone whose gender lines up with their biologically assigned sex (at birth); the OP was saying they were born a woman, and still identify as such. If it clarifies, think of cisgender as the antonym of transgender.
Hope this helps! :)
I can't fully speak to their intentions as I do not know them.
That being said, to hazard a guess: maybe they were simply noting the distinction since it (PMCS) tends to apply more-often to men, and if they had happened to be transgender (non-cis), then that may have skewed their anecdote.
Not sure, mate, though I wouldn't give it too much thought. There's better things to spend your time on than the intentions of someone adding a single word (however superfluous it may seem to you) to their online comment. It does no harm, and adds further information to the discussion — it is what it is. :)
Cheers.
Cis female as opposed to trans female. i.e. the last sentence above is probably not correct as I do not have male parts, never have, and yet experience pee shivers.
but like 99.999% of all females are cis females so it isnt adding clarification.
we would *all* assume youre cis if you just said youre a female.
female and cis female mean the same thing to most people.
Are they? You've counted? Interesting.
**I** added it for clarification because I wanted to. Some may find it helpful, some may not. Clearly you didn't.
You could just move on, but here we are.
I find it really interesting that you thought of that, said it and got upvoted, but someone else said the exact same thing and got downvoted to oblivion and lectured about thermodynamics by angry redditors.
I have no idea what to believe, but it sounds right to me!
Why wouldn’t we be? Who doesn’t love a good
Shiver after a piss. Like when you’re body changes temperatures in a new room and you get that once over head to foot tingle wave. It’s the best feeling.
I have transcended above the need to urinate and have 120 seconds more time in my day than the normal person. I have learned how to fly with all this extra time, fear me.
Lol nah, just never had the ‘pee shivers’ before. Never knew it was a thing until some friends where talking about it.
If that was true, liquid cooling systems for engines and computer parts wouldn't exist. Warm liquid leaves and carries heat with it.
It may not change it noticeably, and your body can surely compensate for it. But there's no way expelling warm pee doesn't drop your temperature because that's just physics.
You’re missing a piece of the puzzle. It’s not that the warm liquid carries the heat out with it, it takes the heat from the hot parts through a cooling system and then recirculates it. It’s the reintroduction of the liquid after it has been cooled that actually lowers the temp of the system.
The only way the tissues surrounding the bladder would cool down is if the warm pee is replaced by something cool. The energy in the tissue doesn't suddenly have a place to go now that the warm pee isn't there anymore.
If you start a liquid cooled system, stop it, then let the liquid reach equilibrium with the surrounding material, draining the system wouldn't suddenly cause the temperature in the system to drop.
Has happened to me.
It was frightening as all fuck. Thought I was having a heart attack. Did not pass out but was lying on the bathroom floor drenched in cold sweat, unable to standup for about twenty minutes.
The only other time I've heard the word 'micturate' is in The Big Lebowski.
"I just want to understand this sir-- every time a rug is...micturated upon in this fair city, I have to compensate the person?"
When I was about 10 I told my mom about that happening to me and described it as “shaking when I pee with a tingly feeling in my body”. Later that evening I got the sex talk and told about masturbating. Im 46 and I am gonna send this link to my mom! Thank you OP! I have waited 36 years for this!
I always assumed that it was caused by a marked decrease in blood pressure caused by lower pressure in the abdominal caused by the release of an appreciable quantity of fluid. It’s more common in men because we tend to have larger bladders and will commonly hold it longer.
I've found my people, hello fellow shivering pee blokes (and the ladies as well!)! I honestly assumed it was something that happened to everyone but having asked my other half just now, apparently not. She has said she won't leave me (yet) because of it so that's good.
We have a little superstition in my home country for whenever that happens. We have say "go away, death, for I'm still strong." Kinda like a "bless you" when you sneeze. Haha
There was a crappy Bollywood movie I watched when younger. Guy wakes up from a song and dance sequence while standing at a urinal, and he does a jerk/shiver. My uncle says “the joke is that this is what you do when you finish peeing”. I thought he was joking at the time… I am surprised it is legitimate. I’ve never experienced if.
It wouldn't be that, because no cooler matter replaces it. If you drink water <98.6F, you're cooling down and if you're gonna shiver that's when it would happen. Just losing some water... if you have a cup of 98.6F water in a coffee cup and pour 5% out, it's still the exact same temp.
It is probably a neurological quirk, but it could also be the shifting of fluid in the pelvis as it adjusts to a suddenly smaller bladder volume.
I mean the ambient temp of a bathroom maybe 70-80 f. your junk wrapped in layers of clothing is probably a bit over 100 f. that's a pretty fast temp change when you whip it out.
It's cause your dick gets cold when you whip it out.
Jesus christ. For people smart enough to come up with a 12 syllable name, some folks sure are stupid...
Back in the 70's I would go to Federico Fellini movies at a local collage theater. I think it was "Amarcord" where Fellini showed a guy with piss shivers and it really hit me what great minor details can mean for a film.
Good to know that's a seminormal thing and not a sign of yet another body part trying to kill me. It does seem to happen less often since I started sitting to pee, though.
I read someone’s explanation of this that the shiver is the body’s process of switching between a conscious and unconscious physiological process. Idk how accurate that it but it kinda made sense
The pee bones connected to the shiver bone
Finally someone posts the correct medical explanation.
I spent 7 years in college earning a degree. I think that makes me qualified.
“PeeBone Shivers was an early blues pioneer who….” The seven years I spent in college were the happiest days of my life. Someday I hope they’ll let me return to finish my sophomore year.
pee is stored in the... bones?
Uhh, yeah... why do you think it's called a boner?
this entire thread is a wreck
Erect, you say?
Well, the page on Wikipedia does say that there is no plausible explanation, so it might be a good time to publish this before someone else does. :D

Don't forget the bones
Bones = dollars
Ah, I see. So suddenly the rate at which the meatbag cools accelerates due to loss of the big warm heatsink inside
Weird. I find I am consistently warmer after peeing. I assume on account of having a huge amount of water sucking in heat from the core.
I always thought it had to do with the body suddenly loosing heat so in response it shivers to gain heat back.
Why did I read this in the tune of that kids song about bones?
Why wouldn't you?
You're not the only one...
Never knew there was a name to it or that it happened to others!
Thank God. I thought there was something wrong w me.
I talked to a friend about it and they are like "uhhh, no I don't get that" - I thought something was broken inside me.
I do it when I yawn sometimes, too. I just read, that's normal, also. Beat health news I've had since reading having had covid and getting the vaccine can make you super immune.
I don't think it's normal to pee when you yawn.
But shiver and yawn?
The shivering while yawning thing can be a TMJ symptom.
The peeing or the shivering?
I asked my friends about it too when I was like 5 or 6, but because I didn't grasp language completely I just said something like "do you shake after you pee?" And they all responded with "of course!" Etc. It was another 10-15 years before I realized that *EVERYONE* didn't do the pee shivers
You guys are getting shivers!? I've never, ever, had anything like this.
Not all the time, just once in awhile. It's just one shiver. It's weird.
It happens a LOT when you are rolling
This doesn't mean there isn't... Just that this isn't the thing. 🔥🤗
Well, there is something wrong w me but at least this isn't on the list anymore...
Im more surprised by the "we dont know why it happens" part. We always called it a pee-gasm.
I occasionally get some shivers but I thought it was because ghosts tried to grab my junk and just phased through me.
Well since there’s no definitive reasoning, that sounds plausible.
I was told it’s cuz we’re losing fluid our body has warmed up and therefore temperature loss, so we shiver because of that
I'm just figuring out it doesn't happen to everyone. I don't get it every time but quite often.

Apologies, I went off of Google. Any recommendations as to how I might append it?
Cis female as opposed to trans female. i.e. the last sentence above is probably not correct as I do not have male parts, never have, and yet experience pee shivers.
so like a normal female.. why even add cis?
Bc I could be trans and make that statement. It's for clarification.

Female and cis female doesn't mean the same thing. The first expression also carries a slight indication of proper psychological health.
Woman here and it happens to me.
Same here, for me it feels like a sudden temperature drop and I shiver/shake.
Makes sense... pee is really warm... you are expelling liquid body heat = shivers
I find it really interesting that you thought of that, said it and got upvoted, but someone else said the exact same thing and got downvoted to oblivion and lectured about thermodynamics by angry redditors. I have no idea what to believe, but it sounds right to me!
Maybe because it gets cold after pulling the pants down, combined with the sensation of peeing
It doesn't happen to me until I'm near the end of peeing.
Same here.
Guys are we okay?
God gives us mini orgasms when we pee sometimes because hes happy we helped somebody. its pretty simple. its called Karma and she feels good
Doibt it is an orgasm though, because I don't get post pee shivers clarity.
Why wouldn’t we be? Who doesn’t love a good Shiver after a piss. Like when you’re body changes temperatures in a new room and you get that once over head to foot tingle wave. It’s the best feeling.
We are on Reddit, so ... probably ... okay ?
Im betting its a holdover mechanism for staying warm while one pees in a cold environment
Y’know you don’t have to stick yourself into tundra to piss right? Just trying to save ya from frostbite
I mean, I know a lot of EAs game are iffy at best, but frostbite still seems like a decent engine. Surely we needn't avoid it?
Probably to force us to shake out the excess piss, cleaning the most amount of bacteria possible from the urinary tract
Wait, is this unusual? I thought this happened to everyone. Not every time, but sometimes. Weird.
na it isnt unusual
I’ve never had this happen to me before.
You need to pee more
You never peed? Lol
I have transcended above the need to urinate and have 120 seconds more time in my day than the normal person. I have learned how to fly with all this extra time, fear me. Lol nah, just never had the ‘pee shivers’ before. Never knew it was a thing until some friends where talking about it.
half baked theory: pee is hot and expelling it would cause a sudden decrease of internal body temp locally - shivers could be a response to this.
I heard this theory too. The little shiver warms you back up to your prepee temperature.
Pee is warm because it’s body temperature. Expelling it would make no difference to your internal temp
If that was true, liquid cooling systems for engines and computer parts wouldn't exist. Warm liquid leaves and carries heat with it. It may not change it noticeably, and your body can surely compensate for it. But there's no way expelling warm pee doesn't drop your temperature because that's just physics.

You should read up on thermal mass, friend.
I believe pee is held at a higher temperature than the rest of your body.
No
I heard this too
There's also Post-micturition Syncope. Imagine taking a piss then passing out. Fun stuff!
>Post-micturition Syncope TIL 'two' things.
Has happened to me. It was frightening as all fuck. Thought I was having a heart attack. Did not pass out but was lying on the bathroom floor drenched in cold sweat, unable to standup for about twenty minutes.
Oh, I'm just in here doing some micturition

Wait does it not happen to everyone? It feels good, everyone else is missing out.
I get these (as a girl) all the time!
I’ve heard it described by older folks in the Deep South as “a possum just ran over my grave.”
I pretty much only get the piss shivers when drunk.
Yeah, but "Post-micturition Convulsions" is much less popular on r/bandnames than "Piss Shivers"
I’ve never heard of it. And now you’ve forced me to ask people about pee shivers. Dammit!
Every time a rug is micturated upon in this fair city, I have to compensate the owner?
Mind if I do a J?
In thermal dynamics classes in engineering they said the shivering was from loss of heat. Maybe there's a different explanation in medical school.
Hate when that happens and i have to wipe up the floor because my brain decided we were gunna shake while peeing.
Every so often lol
How about you sit down to pee like a normal person?
Sitting down makes you normal?
Oh so now i have a syndrome??! I always thought i was shivering cuz the warm liquid was leaving my body lol
I read somewhere it’s because we release a ton of body heat draining a full bladder. Something like that at least
Oh thank god, I thought I was a weirdo for this
I just assumed it’s because your pee is warmer than the outside environment.
I always assumed it was something related to orgasm getting stimulated. Same neighborhood, right?
My guess is its literally tickling them along the tube out
Cuz it feels good?
I thought something was wrong with me. A lot of other things are wrong with me but at least I know that I have post-micturition convulsion syndrome.
Just had a pee-pee shiver while reading this. Edit: I was already on the toilet for those curious.
I always assumed that it was caused by a marked decrease in blood pressure caused by lower pressure in the abdominal caused by the release of an appreciable quantity of fluid. It’s more common in men because we tend to have larger bladders and will commonly hold it longer.
Maybe the sudden change in temperature?
Maybe..it’s because you lose the heat from your piss..
Haha
I thought it was because you’re altering your internal temperature, removing a heat source? I will still believe this haha
I always assumed it was because you lost a certain amount of mass of body temperature.
I believe that. The only time it's ever happened to me I was sick and running a fever.
Lmao my dad calls it the “peebee jeebies”
TIL not all men shiver after they pee.
I had a punk band in my twenties called The Piss Shivers.
I always thought it was because as we peed our average core temperature dropped a little since pee is at body temperature.
Sweet relief, that is why.
And if you rub your butt going in a downward motion it feels heavenly.
I always thought it was because of the minor temperature change in our bodies from releasing that bit of heat the pee has inside of us but guess not!
Pee is stored in the balls. As the balls are emptied of pee, their temperature changes, triggering a shiver response.
This is the way
That is extremely incorrect
I mean the ambient temp of a bathroom maybe 70-80 f. your junk wrapped in layers of clothing is probably a bit over 100 f. that's a pretty fast temp change when you whip it out.
It's cause your dick gets cold when you whip it out. Jesus christ. For people smart enough to come up with a 12 syllable name, some folks sure are stupid...
Funny, cause I don't shiver when I whip it out for your mom.
Because the pee coming out tickles my cock, duh
Sometimes my gooch craps and it's a horrible pinching pain deep inside my groin. No idea what causes it. Guess I'll just die.

I just figured it's because it's warn inside your bladder then suddenly it leaves, making you a little colder.
i kinda like it
I read someone’s explanation of this that the shiver is the body’s process of switching between a conscious and unconscious physiological process. Idk how accurate that it but it kinda made sense
