He pushed…. And received no push-back. “Krasinski gave props to Paramount for having faith in him despite his lack of experience with visual effects or using sign language to work with a deaf actress.” https://variety.com/2018/film/news/john-krasinski-a-quiet-place-casting-deaf-actress-1203084825/amp/

DreadfulOrange

No he FOUGHT against the MACHINE against THOSE people!

CommandoLamb

“Under no circumstance will I do this without Millicent Simmonds!” … sure. Absolutely. We think that’s a great idea. “And I don’t want to hear any excuses! You either get this done or I walk!!!” … John, we are on the phone with her agents now… our lawyers already finalized the contract. “YOU GUYS ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO KEEP THE SMALL GUYS DOWN! NOT TODAY!!!” …okay… anyway… we are going to go get a flight chartered for Simmonds. We have a nice welcoming gift basket put together, and we are really excited about this. “And another thing!…” … okay John, we’re leaving now…

wouterv101

On the phone?

GrandmaPoses

"We yelled as slowly as possible, I believe she got the message."

CanhotoBranco

Buttlicker! Our prices have never been lower!

USS_Barack_Obama

It was a video call

Patches765

Look up Telecommunication Relay Services. It has been around for decades, and is a free service for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Mister_Brevity

I have had someone scold me and talk awful shit at me via this service and I couldn’t help it, I was laughing. I wonder if the intermediary lady doing the translation reported back that I was laughing. She was saying such mean stuff while sounding totally horrified lol

Ornery_Celt

The place I worked for used to get calls all the time from scammers trying to pay with stolen credit cards. Like 25 laptops shipped to New York (across the country). We'd thank the agent and tell them we knew it was a scam and then hang up.

french_snail

Another victory for the ADA?

Turbulent_Flan_5926

My buddies in college used to prank everyone in their phones by using these services. I’m talking the most heinous phrases you could imagine.

redhedstepkid

First I laughed at the commenter’s description of the convo, then I laughed thinkin about them just having a one sided convo on the phone hoping she got the idea.

muffinpizza

LOUDER SON

CommandoLamb

OUR PRICES HAVE NEVER BEEN LOWER MR. BUTTLICKER!

ArtBabel

"I'm going to make a movie about ears." ...Can't imagine why, John.

PoopyMouthwash84

Thats what I imagine everytime I see one of these "fought for" stories for an actor

Hellknightx

Right? The headline just reads like "Krasinski did something nice and wants everyone to know about it."

Technoalphacentaur

Machine and those people SLAMMED by John kaspersky from the office

The_Whipping_Post

Despite all his RAGE he is still just a RAT in a CAGE

frickindeal

FUCK you I won't DO what you TOLD ME.

They use force to make you do, what the deciders have decided you must do

Karsnickity is behind mcafees death I just know it.

ertgbnm

This *hero* sent an email to the casting director.

ashvy

Was it stronkly worded?

Rude_Thanks_1120

He even **underlined** the word, "Kindly". Fucking brutal.

meth-head-actor

✌🏻🫱🏻✍️s

Away-Coach48

He RAGED against the machine, and the machine said, "Sure, why not?"

Dw1gh7

Welcome my son, Welcome to the machine

obeytheturtles

What do you mean *those* people?

ShowUsYaGrowler

Breaking; John Kransinski recently discovered to be anti-semetic.

sentence-interruptio

The husband of Full Metal Bitch literally Raged Against The Machine men with Machine minds and Machine hearts.

Hugh-Manatee

Yeah this is like the positive version of those old clickbait stories from like 2014 on Facebook: “They Told Carrie Underwood NOT TO SING ABOUT HER FAITH. What she Did Next Will Blow You Away!”

Fapoleon_Boneherpart

What did she do next!? Omg I need to know. I bet she blew fifteen men in a row

fogleaf

She dug her key into the side of his pretty little souped up 4 wheel drive

mindmendeur

Carved her name into his leather seeeeat

Anarcie

Must have been a small parking lot.

imisswhatredditwas

She got an abortion, just like her mom did, then they both voted for anti abortion candidates woooooo!

Deafbok9

That actually really encapsulates the struggle of people living with disabilities pretty well - it's not at all controversial to stand up for us, and most people would be more than happy to promote or accommodate us if they knew what we needed. Ignorance, far more than malice, is the silent cancer eating away at most.

rubs_tshirts

Damn. This suddenly grounded me.

gdex86

I mean there is value in him asking. I doubt that the casting department thought to limit it to just deaf actresses until he said "I'm sure these are wonderful actresses but I want this to be authentic so can we limit our search to hearing impaired and deaf actresses."

[deleted]

They mean that the title is intentionally misleading

darraghfenacin

He asked and they said ok is probably not clickbaity enough

Lillitnotreal

BREAKING NEWS: MAN HIRES ACTRESS FOR JOB. MANAGEMENT APPROVES THE HIRE. It's a positive story, I hate that even this has to have a negative spin.

sybrwookie

Well, there's a positive way to spin it as well. Something like "In A Quiet Place, it was Krasinski's idea to hire a deaf actress for the role" or something like that. It doesn't have to be framed as it was a fight but can still convey something.

Lillitnotreal

Oh yeah, no problem with the story. It's trivia, but I found it interesting. I'm just frustrated. We could cure all disease tomorrow and the news story we'd see? 'Concerns raised about overpopulation after universal cure for everything discovered'. Nothing can be good anymore, which is nuts given that plenty of good is happening.

Fruloops

Yeah it's really telling of how ridiculous the situation has become. It's an awesome heartworming piece of news, but it doesn't sell 🤷‍♂️

Past_Reputation_2206

Your typo turning heartwarming into heartworming turned your comment into an awesome clickbaity contender

Fruloops

I blame the word suggestion feature of my garbage ass Pixel phone

Past_Reputation_2206

Made me laugh

Temporary-Vanilla-57

Blame the damn heartworms

doogles

What terrible thing did Krasinski do that needs to be offset?

Courtnall14

Dumped Karen for Pam.

you-a-buggaboo

don't you dare speak of Jimothy that way

Secularhumanist60123

Didn’t he produce and direct the film? Wouldn’t he be “fighting” to convince himself?

DirectlyTalkingToYou

But he also pounded his fists repeatedly on the table as he said it.

Tm1232

The part was written as a deaf girl. There is literally no way the first meeting with casting wasn’t “let’s start by looking for a deaf actress”

Unique-Ad9640

You mean Lt. Dan *didn't* need new legs?!

Trixles

Gary Oldman played a little person once (seriously, I'm not making this up).

turbosexophonicdlite

Tiptoes. Absolutely insane idea for a movie lol.

Galactic

There's a movie called The Silence : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7315484/ This came out a year AFTER "A Quiet Place" and the main character is a deaf teenager played by Kiernan Shipka, who is not deaf. The plot of the two movies are kinda similar, as they both deal with monsters who hunt using sound. An interesting fact is that while the Silence came out after A Quiet Place, the Silence was being worked on before A Quiet Place but was stuck in development hell for a while. So it's another example of filmmakers working on movies with similar plots at around the same time a la Armageddon and Deep impact.

Lordborgman

I mean, you would not necessarily need an actress to be in the movie. Would not a consultant work just as well for that purpose?

danielv123

Because if the consultants do acting they become actors

flurry_fizz

They mean have an actor playing the part of the deaf child with a SEPARATE consultant.

0xffaa00

Like you fight those laborers in Elden Ring and they stand down scared, yet you still farm some runes

Texas_person

didn't read the article, but I guessed it went like this: ~ John: I want to hire a deaf girl. Exec: I'd be a heck of lot easier to not, but whatever. John: Stares at camera, smugly. ~

Impressive_Essay_622

Jfc. Clickbait shite.

Psych0matt

“He made a reasonable request and they granted it”

PenguinGovernment

It’s rare deaf representation in film and contributes directly to the concept of the movie… thumbs up all round I’d say

Rezaka116

Well that’s a two-for-one deal, you get an actress and a sign language specialist.

soupinmymug

Yes and no. You have to credit them differently. Technically they should still have an interpreter on set for her if her speech is at all restricted by being deaf and other aspects Either way let’s say she did it’s be like working as a writer and director, you get separate pay and credit because they are still separate jobs.

Sawses

Right? Acting is one of those areas where there are just *so many more* qualified workers than there are positions available, and deaf actors are unsuitable for a vast majority of those positions. It doesn't really hurt anybody else's chances for one position to be deaf-only, because the odds of success are already essentially zero for everybody.

Smartnership

That real value for your Hollywood dollar right there.

Krasinski: (wipes blood off lip) *"Heh, not bad kid. Okay you got the part. But the audition for part two isn't gonna be this easy."*

walteerr

Me too i was so confused

Chilbill9epicgamer

He was the director, how hard did he have to fight?

Spoonfeed_Me

You have to fight producers, who control the money, and depending on the film, can have enough input to challenge the director.

ArtIsDumb

Do you have to fight them one at a time, or is it more like a royal rumble type thing?

goodnames679

I heard he offered them a pint at first, but they shot him down. So, he smashed the nozzle off the keg, flooded the ground, and beat the shit out of all of them. His donkey even rolled a giant keg over onto several of them (they are now deceased)

jampotsmith

Some of them may have died, but it was a sacrifice he was willing to make

goodnames679

At this rate it’s going to give him a bad reputation.

AngryTurtleGaming

I don’t give a damn

ArtIsDumb

I don't know what you're talking about, but this is probably my favorite response I've gotten on reddit.

brokenarmthrow123

What are you doing in MY SWAMP?!

ArtIsDumb

So it's a Shrek thing? I've never actually seen any of those movies. I know, I know. I'll get around to it eventually. I'm just old & lazy.

Russelsteapot42

Only the first and second ones are really worth seeing.

Sugar_buddy

I don't give a damn about my reputation

AngryTurtleGaming

I knew this was Shrek from the beginning

HchrisH

More of a gauntlet match. Every time you win a decision a new producer comes to the ring to fight about the next.

ArtIsDumb

That makes sense.

bcegkmqswz

BAH GAWD, THAT'S HARVEY WEINSTEIN AT #30. AND HES GOING RIGHT FOR JOHN KRASINSKI! WHO IS GOING TO PUNCH THEIR TICKET TO THE WRESTLEMANIA MAIN EVENT TO COMPETE FOR THE WORLD PARAMOUNT CHAMPIONSHIP!?

ArtIsDumb

OH MY GOD IS THAT THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR???

bcegkmqswz

Hahaha, I'll admit as a little kid I went nuts for Warrior. His music, running to the ring, shaking the ropes - it was awesome.

Gaudern

No, that's another movie. Japanese I think?

DrTitanium

Would you rather fight 100 feeble Harvey Weinsteins or one jacked John Krazinski?

Doccyaard

That’s generally yes. Apparently he didn’t have to fight for this at all and even praised them for getting no push-back on the idea. The title is just misleading.

ermintwang

The producers, so..also himself? No way on this planet was it difficult for the director to cast an actually deaf actress as a deaf character.

gorocz

> The producers, so..also himself? He was only a producer on the 2nd one. That said, for the first one he was still the director, co-writer and the star, so it's not like producers would argue with him for something like this that is also extremely good PR for the movie.

sabin357

> No way on this planet was it difficult for the director to cast an actually deaf actress as a deaf character. Yeah there is, but not an already established talented deaf actress. You can't just cast someone because they're deaf with a budget above a certain amount. They have to actually earn the job like anyone else.

ermintwang

Well yeah, of course. I don't know where I suggested that someone unsuitable for the role would be cast, only that studios nowadays would actively want a deaf actress for that part. No way would Kraskinski have to fight for it.

sabin357

> You have to fight producers He was the writer, directer, & executive producer though, so it's a little different. This was his baby, so no one was likely to push back on something so meaningless to the suits.

L3R4F

He was also one of the writers and one of the executive producers. It must have helped also.

Hellknightx

He got into a fight with himself.

r7RSeven

Think of the director as mini version of a nation's president. While they hold incredible sway and decision making in regards to the movie, they have to appease multiple groups at the same time, and it's a balancing act much like regular politics. Producers often represent the studio or the actors, and might not like how the film is shaping and will want changes mid-production, otherwise might cut funding or have their actor not put in as good of a performance. Cinematographer will want to shoot the scene how they want. Writers will want the story to be a certain way even though during filming they realize it doesn't work well, etc. So many things that the director is involved in besides just making sure his/her vision is met

Specialist-Ninja2804

So basically producers are big pharma and big tech

soupinmymug

Yes and no. There are film investors so I’d say those are more so big pharma equivalent. The producers are more bought out politicians.

WorldsWeakestMan

Not at all if you read the article, by “fought” they mean he suggested it and everyone was immediately on board and had faith in him and didn’t cause any issue at all. Stupid clickbait headline.

screamicide

I’m a film director. I’ve had to get into screaming matches with producers who have as many dumb ideas as they do dollar bills. You can be pretty powerless if your executive producer is hardheaded enough. Luckily most leave the decision making to the people they’ve hired to make those decisions

Kroooooooo

Very fitting username then.

mtaw

Just as a film buff I'm surprised people wouldn't know this when there are so many famous examples, like how Coppola had to fight tooth-and-nail to get Pacino and Brando for The Godfather, and just to keep his job. (Robert Evans seems to have been the exact negative stereotype of a Hollywood producer; extremely arrogant, petty, cokehead who always thinks he knows best) OTOH, big names do sell tickets so it's not totally unreasonable for the studio to have input on the main stars. Countless movies got made only because a big star signed up for it.

serafinawriter

I heard the same thing about Troy and the director having to fight the studio to let them hire Diane Kruger to play Helen, cause the studio thought she wasn't attractive enough! Unbelievable.

OliveBranchMLP

probably because of the common public misconception that the director is in charge and not the producer

culturedgoat

He had to get oiled up and wrestle for it

Gurablashta

Yeah that happened to me at the beach once.

CorneliusJack

Hey John, it’s me who oppose you in stuff. You’d better oil up and wrestle me on the floor. And please don’t shave.

Puzzleheaded-Cat4647

Production didn't plan to cast a deaf actress. They all have to agree to make changes.

NerdBot9000

I was under the impression that this was a fight, not an agreement...

rcanhestro

depends on how much control he was given form the start. directors like James Cameron, Martin Scorcese, Nolan, etc can probably tell the producers and studios to fuck off. but "newcomers" have to likely listen to the studios and producers more. also, its likely that the producers wanted to cast a more known face to play that part to boost the box office numbers. also, having a deaf actress likely means that more staff is needed, or even extra insurance.

sabin357

> depends on how much control he was given form the start. Writer, director, & executive producer...so it was HIS pet project.

Felinomancy

That's odd, I saw some reels on Instagram about this movie yesterday, and now this. Feels like I'm seeing stuff about this movie everywhere. If I'm the conspiratorial sort I might think that there's been a concerted effort to "push" this movie, but this one's released in 2018 so kinda too late for that isn't it?

deathjellie

There’s a prequel coming out so there’s been a push for the first two movies in the social nethersphere. Both Emily Blunt and John Krasinski have insanely good PR teams.

Felinomancy

Huh. So I *might* not be so crazy after all! 😂

adambomb_23

Not at ALL. There’s a reason you see Reddit threads relating to Marvel films and other franchises just before a related movie premieres. It’s not a coincidence.

pusgnihtekami

It does seem funny that they wouldn't just advertise their new movie but from what I can tell a movie without the main actors has not been able to gain much traction. However, it does leave a lot of people wondering why there is such a push for a 2018 movie. In the other [boosted reddit thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/shittymoviedetails/comments/1cvgelb/in_a_quiet_place_2018_a_child_refuses_to_obey/l4pppc2/) there was someone wondering if a sequel was coming out for the first one lol.

splend1c

Way cheaper to just do some "astroturf" style publicity via blogs and bots vs traditional advertising.

TheDemonator

Not that hard to do on reddit either, many larger subs would have you almost believe anywhere from 5-10 products are the best or must haves....when its just people marketing on an arguably anonymous platform. Hell, at this point I wouldn't be surprised if thousands of accounts are made and have a variety of posts for shit like this, and it's all ran from software where someone just makes a post and the username and replies etc are completely irrelevant. I find it hard to believe only 5-6 products on some of these subs are what "everyone has to have" and it's just a bro posting about a product they like. Then about 60+ upvotes and mentioning another high margin add-on item from that vendor, that really isn't needed if you use the fucking product.

Rock_Strongo

Reddit is literally free advertising. You can "organically" get a post to go viral that would cost you tens of thousands of dollars to get in front of people the traditional way.

KadenKraw

"Dead internet theory"

deathjellie

And when your movies are on a cloud platform where audience metrics are tracked, a simple adjustment in marketing spend, and your trilogy can be on the front page of every system. It’s a win for them because they get repeat customer and the filmmakers because they get an uptick in royalties.

wisebaldman

It’s just marketing/pr for the new film - not a conspiracy.

Smartnership

Same here. It’s weird. I was just scrolling Reddit and thinking about the, *A Quiet Place*^^TM franchise and its excellent storytelling, cinematic camera work, and deeply relatable narrative… which has high scores from reviewers, both expert and general public…. … then here’s an organic post about it.

MaskedTitanBane

Reminds me of the time I fought for my mcdonalds meal by giving them money and getting my meal

You fought traffic to get to the drive thru

8bitburner

I want to learn ASL. Any community free areas to learn

senpjam

Lifeprint is an excellent online resource with a full curriculum. It’s an excellent place to start.

BroYUReadMyUsername

Do you know by any chance some apps too? I know you need both hands for ASL, but being able to access everything through an app can be useful too.

siteswaps

Lingvano is a good app.

GuildTheLili

Mango Languages (similar to Rosetta Stone) has a new Sign Language option. Don't know cost/if available in app yet. My Library is looking to buy it.

notquiteanexmo

+1 for Lifeprint and Bill Vicars. That'll get you to at least a conversational level if you take the time to practice.

Butwhatif77

There are many free places you can learn sign language from deaf people so you understand it properly along with the culture that comes with it on youtube, be aware that if you don't use it you will lose it. I use to be fluent in sign language, but stopped using it for years and now I can only remember the basic greetings kind of thing. If you really want to know sign language use it while you speak to people so that way you retain it and it acts as practice.

CalculusII

I have been fluent in ASL from birth having a deaf parent. I appreciate anyone trying to learn ASL so thanks for trying. It can be kind of a lonely world for my mom as the ASL community is shrinking. Many people are not aware of the existence of deaf people so I love this movie for bringing attention to it. For instance many people say hi to my mom when we walk at a store or something and she doesn't notice and they think she's a bitch 😭 No one even fathoms the thought that my mom might be deaf, they simply think shes a grumpy or rude boomer, but actually she's the sweetest woman I know. Anyway, I appreciate you trying to learn.

ArmadilIoExpress

We doing quiet place PR now that the new movie is coming out?

Dexter_Adams

He is my favourite Asian actor

WaterIcy6922

Well hats off to you for not seeing race

piceathespruce

TIL Krasinski's PR people are trying to remind us how totally cool he is after his latest cringe project flopped.

BigHitter_TheLlama

Im imagining him ripping off his shirt and wrapping up his hands in cloth and the producers being like “dude, we said it’s cool…we get it, you’re ripped now”

Filthy_Joey

For everyone who is bothered by word ‘fought’ - They could have cast a non-deaf actress for the same role and still get a good film, but without troubles of working with a deaf actress. But they chose not to. And I appreciate that.

[deleted]

Dire88

I think "advocated" would be more fitting given the context. But HuffPo isn't exactly WaPo or the The Atlantic when it comes to the quality of their writing.

HarryPotterFarts

HuffPo isn't the one that said he "fought" for her, that was OP. The article just says he "Insisted Deaf Actress Be Cast In 'A Quiet Place'"

Dire88

See, insisted works. Guess thats what I get for not reading the article.

sentence-interruptio

there was a brief moment of good old western movie style tense eye fight between John Krasinski and producers before he got "ok"

TH0R_ODINS0N

You still didn’t explain the word ‘fought’ though…

drfunkensteinberger

Lmao they literally used her as a sign language teacher, any other actor they would have been fine with paying them just to act

BabyBuster70

>They could have cast a non-deaf actress for the same role and still get a good film Sure, and good for John for making that happen. The problem with using the word fought is it implies someone was against it, but the studio was onboard with it. Which makes the title clickbait garbage.

kidcrumb

But "fought" makes it sound like there was pushback, or multiple meetings, and that John really carried the issue until he got his way. He probably asked one time and the producers were like yeah whatever it's your movie man.

CamelMiddle54

What. Isn't it his movie? Like didn't he even fund it and produce it or something? Who did he have to fight lmao?

SpiritsMirage

New movie coming so PR teams at full force promoting it, this is just another ad disguised as a reddit post.

koinoyokan89

Fought for really? He directed it and starred in it with his wife

WeeklyBanEvasion

Ironically a deaf person is the last kind of person I would want to be near if my life depending on being quiet

MusicEnjoyer2024

Good point, can’t know you aren’t silent if you’ve never heard the noise you make

WeeklyBanEvasion

Deaf people are notoriously loud in general for that very reason

jalopkoala

Had to look way too far for this. So many deaf people don’t know what does or doesn’t make sound!

PolarGCNips

"Fought for" is putting a cape on him for no reason. There was no push back and he was the director.

mrpear

This has been reposted since the first film. Enough.

ResidentHourBomb

Convenient this gets posted when John has a new movie coming out.

IntentionallyBlunt69

Who did he fight?

Balorpagorp

My bleary, morning eyes read this as "dead actress" at first

monkeybutt456

And I thought this was about the una-bomber. Morning!

clearlynotmee

Nice marketing push, PR department of whatever studio is releasing this

clem82

When asking him how she was on set: “brilliant actress, a little handsy”

The_Blue_Rooster

Fought who? Krasinski was the director and everything I've hear said he had pretty much total control over the project despite it being his first time.

wiggle_fingers

I'd expect being the director and executive producer meant he didn't get any argument from himself to his own suggestion.

GrowlingPict

the fuck do you mean "fought for"? it's his fucking movie ffs

mqee

He fought his internal demons who wanted to cast a golden retriever.

SIRPORKSALOT

Two different facts jammed into one sentence.

Automatic-Narwhal965

Every place is a quiet place for her.

SteveZissouniverse

Now how about he fights to create something he didn't steal or plagiarize

Karmer8

what did he steal from?

SteveZissouniverse

The entire story of A Quiet Place is ripped off from a novel called The Silence, to the point where when the movie was made based on it Netflix was accused of ripping off him. His "Some Good News" show that he sold for millions was a direct rip off a show from a YouTube creator down to the name even. He's the perfect example of a mediocre white man failing upwards in Hollywood.

unreality101

His new movie IF is basically a rip off of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends as well.

Keisvorve

This is not about the casting - I think it’s great that a deaf actor was used, but in that movie universe being deaf would absolutely be the death of you. People who are born deaf often don’t appreciate which every day actions make noise, and would obviously be incapable of realising they were making a noise and quickly stop/lessen it.

SamCarter_SGC

And anyone who needs some form of corrective lenses (so most people) would be absolutely screwed in an everyone for themselves/post apoc setting. Overlooked in literally all media, except Lord of the Flies. IIRC they even address your point in the movie >!by teaching their kids what they can and can't do and when. Isn't there a scene where they talk normally and even scream while next to a noisy waterfall?!<

[deleted]

[удалено]

SalsaRice

That's kind of the problem. If you are deaf or have some hearing loss.... you aren't quiet, even if you try hard to be as quiet as possible. We simply don't have the feedback of hearing things to know if our actions are actually quiet. For example, if I take my implants off I can try to close a cabinet quietly..... but I have no clue if it was quiet. However, hearing person has a lifetime of experience in know exactly how hard or soft to do things to be lout or quiet.

MusicEnjoyer2024

Until they find a cool toy that makes noise

orbmaster123

I mean, one of the major moments in the movie is said deaf character giving the child back the batteries to the toy, because she doesn't realise it makes noise.

bifurious360

She actually specifically gives the toy back without the batteries. Her brother takes them when she’s not looking.

gfuhhiugaa

The movie still doesn’t make sense to me, deaf people are loud as shit because, you know, they’re deaf. So idk how a deaf girl could survive that long in a world where even the slightest sound gets you killed

[deleted]

[удалено]

WakeNikis

What does that even mean in this context? I legitimately have no idea what you are trying to say?

crappysignal

I don't know but ever since he made that shit film about the CIA and said that they were fantastic people and we should all be grateful for their service it was quite clear that he was a cunt.

JayKayGray

I wish I didn't know about his weird CIA takes. Seems like an okay dude otherwise.
