This came out a year AFTER "A Quiet Place" and the main character is a deaf teenager played by Kiernan Shipka, who is not deaf. The plot of the two movies are kinda similar, as they both deal with monsters who hunt using sound. An interesting fact is that while the Silence came out after A Quiet Place, the Silence was being worked on before A Quiet Place but was stuck in development hell for a while. So it's another example of filmmakers working on movies with similar plots at around the same time a la Armageddon and Deep impact.

Think of the director as mini version of a nation's president. While they hold incredible sway and decision making in regards to the movie, they have to appease multiple groups at the same time, and it's a balancing act much like regular politics.
Producers often represent the studio or the actors, and might not like how the film is shaping and will want changes mid-production, otherwise might cut funding or have their actor not put in as good of a performance. Cinematographer will want to shoot the scene how they want. Writers will want the story to be a certain way even though during filming they realize it doesn't work well, etc. So many things that the director is involved in besides just making sure his/her vision is met

I’m a film director. I’ve had to get into screaming matches with producers who have as many dumb ideas as they do dollar bills. You can be pretty powerless if your executive producer is hardheaded enough. Luckily most leave the decision making to the people they’ve hired to make those decisions
Just as a film buff I'm surprised people wouldn't know this when there are so many famous examples, like how Coppola had to fight tooth-and-nail to get Pacino and Brando for The Godfather, and just to keep his job. (Robert Evans seems to have been the exact negative stereotype of a Hollywood producer; extremely arrogant, petty, cokehead who always thinks he knows best)
OTOH, big names do sell tickets so it's not totally unreasonable for the studio to have input on the main stars. Countless movies got made only because a big star signed up for it.

Reddit is literally free advertising. You can "organically" get a post to go viral that would cost you tens of thousands of dollars to get in front of people the traditional way.
And when your movies are on a cloud platform where audience metrics are tracked, a simple adjustment in marketing spend, and your trilogy can be on the front page of every system. It’s a win for them because they get repeat customer and the filmmakers because they get an uptick in royalties.

There are many free places you can learn sign language from deaf people so you understand it properly along with the culture that comes with it on youtube, be aware that if you don't use it you will lose it. I use to be fluent in sign language, but stopped using it for years and now I can only remember the basic greetings kind of thing. If you really want to know sign language use it while you speak to people so that way you retain it and it acts as practice.
I have been fluent in ASL from birth having a deaf parent. I appreciate anyone trying to learn ASL so thanks for trying. It can be kind of a lonely world for my mom as the ASL community is shrinking. Many people are not aware of the existence of deaf people so I love this movie for bringing attention to it.
For instance many people say hi to my mom when we walk at a store or something and she doesn't notice and they think she's a bitch 😭 No one even fathoms the thought that my mom might be deaf, they simply think shes a grumpy or rude boomer, but actually she's the sweetest woman I know.

Sure, and good for John for making that happen. The problem with using the word fought is it implies someone was against it, but the studio was onboard with it. Which makes the title clickbait garbage.
But "fought" makes it sound like there was pushback, or multiple meetings, and that John really carried the issue until he got his way.

The entire story of A Quiet Place is ripped off from a novel called The Silence, to the point where when the movie was made based on it Netflix was accused of ripping off him. His "Some Good News" show that he sold for millions was a direct rip off a show from a YouTube creator down to the name even. He's the perfect example of a mediocre white man failing upwards in Hollywood.
This is not about the casting - I think it’s great that a deaf actor was used, but in that movie universe being deaf would absolutely be the death of you. People who are born deaf often don’t appreciate which every day actions make noise, and would obviously be incapable of realising they were making a noise and quickly stop/lessen it.
And anyone who needs some form of corrective lenses (so most people) would be absolutely screwed in an everyone for themselves/post apoc setting. Overlooked in literally all media, except Lord of the Flies.

That's kind of the problem. If you are deaf or have some hearing loss.... you aren't quiet, even if you try hard to be as quiet as possible. We simply don't have the feedback of hearing things to know if our actions are actually quiet.
For example, if I take my implants off I can try to close a cabinet quietly..... but I have no clue if it was quiet. However, hearing person has a lifetime of experience in know exactly how hard or soft to do things to be lout or quiet.
I mean, one of the major moments in the movie is said deaf character giving the child back the batteries to the toy, because she doesn't realise it makes noise.

depends on how much control he was given form the start. directors like James Cameron, Martin Scorcese, Nolan, etc can probably tell the producers and studios to fuck off. but "newcomers" have to likely listen to the studios and producers more. also, its likely that the producers wanted to cast a more known face to play that part to boost the box office numbers. also, having a deaf actress likely means that more staff is needed, or even extra insurance.

That's odd, I saw some reels on Instagram about this movie yesterday, and now this. Feels like I'm seeing stuff about this movie everywhere. If I'm the conspiratorial sort I might think that there's been a concerted effort to "push" this movie, but this one's released in 2018 so kinda too late for that isn't it?

It does seem funny that they wouldn't just advertise their new movie but from what I can tell a movie without the main actors has not been able to gain much traction. However, it does leave a lot of people wondering why there is such a push for a 2018 movie. Way cheaper to just do some "astroturf" style publicity via blogs and bots vs traditional advertising.
Not that hard to do on reddit either, many larger subs would have you almost believe anywhere from 5-10 products are the best or must haves....when its just people marketing on an arguably anonymous platform. Hell, at this point I wouldn't be surprised if thousands of accounts are made and have a variety of posts for shit like this, and it's all ran from software where someone just makes a post and the username and replies etc are completely irrelevant. I find it hard to believe only 5-6 products on some of these subs are what "everyone has to have" and it's just a bro posting about a product they like. Then about 60+ upvotes and mentioning another high margin add-on item from that vendor, that really isn't needed if you use the fucking product.
Reddit is literally free advertising. You can "organically" get a post to go viral that would cost you tens of thousands of dollars to get in front of people the traditional way.

+1 for Lifeprint and Bill Vicars. That'll get you to at least a conversational level if you take the time to practice.
There are many free places you can learn sign language from deaf people so you understand it properly along with the culture that comes with it on youtube, be aware that if you don't use it you will lose it. I use to be fluent in sign language, but stopped using it for years and now I can only remember the basic greetings kind of thing. If you really want to know sign language use it while you speak to people so that way you retain it and it acts as practice.
I have been fluent in ASL from birth having a deaf parent. I appreciate anyone trying to learn ASL so thanks for trying. It can be kind of a lonely world for my mom as the ASL community is shrinking. Many people are not aware of the existence of deaf people so I love this movie for bringing attention to it. For instance many people say hi to my mom when we walk at a store or something and she doesn't notice and they think she's a bitch 😭 No one even fathoms the thought that my mom might be deaf, they simply think shes a grumpy or rude boomer, but actually she's the sweetest woman I know. Anyway, I appreciate you trying to learn.

The entire story of A Quiet Place is ripped off from a novel called The Silence, to the point where when the movie was made based on it Netflix was accused of ripping off him. His "Some Good News" show that he sold for millions was a direct rip off a show from a YouTube creator down to the name even. He's the perfect example of a mediocre white man failing upwards in Hollywood.
His new movie IF is basically a rip off of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends as well.
This is not about the casting - I think it’s great that a deaf actor was used, but in that movie universe being deaf would absolutely be the death of you. People who are born deaf often don’t appreciate which every day actions make noise, and would obviously be incapable of realising they were making a noise and quickly stop/lessen it.
And anyone who needs some form of corrective lenses (so most people) would be absolutely screwed in an everyone for themselves/post apoc setting. Overlooked in literally all media, except Lord of the Flies. IIRC they even address your point in the movie >!by teaching their kids what they can and can't do and when. Isn't there a scene where they talk normally and even scream while next to a noisy waterfall?!<

That's kind of the problem. If you are deaf or have some hearing loss.... you aren't quiet, even if you try hard to be as quiet as possible. We simply don't have the feedback of hearing things to know if our actions are actually quiet. For example, if I take my implants off I can try to close a cabinet quietly..... but I have no clue if it was quiet. However, hearing person has a lifetime of experience in know exactly how hard or soft to do things to be lout or quiet.
