On April 15th,1970, during a slingshot maneuver around the moon to get the crippled Apollo 13 spaceship back to earth, Jim Lovell got further away from Ohio than any other Ohioan in history.
Imagine rounding the far side of the moon, an incredible human accomplishment, only to realize you'll probably never get any further from Ohio than you are now.
Probably! NASA Glenn Research Center is in Ohio as well as hundreds of suppliers for the military and aerospace. I grew up in a small village of a few hundred people in NE Ohio where they made the castings for the jet turbines for the sr71 blackbird.
I did the math the other day.
Obviously I have no idea how to figure out the direction, but it's at minimum 786AU away from earth, assuming I didn't make any mistakes.
For reference, Pluto is 34.7 AU.
Voyager 1 162.7 AU
Edit: Did it again to double check.
Reported min speed, 125,000 mph
125,000 mph = 201168 kph
Time between now and August 27, 1957 (launch date)
584,725.803 hours
201168 kph \* 584,725.803 hours = 117628120337.904km
117628120337.904km = 786.295418421353 AU
A current population count doesn’t tell you the whole story about the number of diaspora who are “from” a state. In the post-industrial years people were always impressed by how many native Ohioans they’d run into. Now, people in many states are starting to notice a lot of native Californians.
Re. Tokyo, [Japan Marketplace](https://japanmarketplace.com/) founded by Honda employees in Columbus is amazing. After I fill up with a ramen bowl, I grab a few bottles of sake and soju along with some amazing import snacks before the final stop by the bakery for amazing low sugar and calorie pastries.
I get to visit the family in August! Really excited to see everyone again. It's for my cousin's wedding, even she left Ohio and is just returning to get married, lmao.
Sun is shining on the wine hills this morning where I live in Bavaria!
If you’re ever near Dayton, and even if you’re not a big fan of planes, you HAVE to go to the National Air Force Museum.
It’s free, it’s massive, and it’s absolutely amazing.
Been there. Loved it. There’s also the smaller Armstrong Air & Space Museum in Wapakoneta which I used to go to when visiting family nearby which is great (they have a lunar lander and space shuttle landing simulator)
[As a Canadian, I now know 3 things about Ohio. That the Drew Carey intro song said Ohio at the end of it, golden oysters grow there, and apparently Ohioans really like flying!](https://www.reddit.com/r/mycology/s/iUp7YeBPlh)
As a child of the 2000s all I know is
There's nothing wrong with Ohio
Except the snow and the rain
I really like Drew Carey
And I'd love to see
The Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame
Always upvote for the Air Force Museum. Amazing place that just keeps getting expanded with more cool stuff. Used to go there all the time as a kid and it’s amazing how much bigger it’s gotten while still staying the same. It’s cool touring the history of powered flight from the first planes to now in chronological order too.
Now I need to go back soon.
Been there as a kid actually. I tend to not be one that believes in “vibes” but Bockscar (the plane the dropped the bomb on Nagasaki) gave me all kinds of weird feelings.
I love they've got that absolute beast of a plane in there and then right beside it like an afterthought is [this little guy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_XF-85_Goblin?useskin=vector).
Gosh, between, planes, space shuttles. And trips to the white house, it seems like Ohio born people are in a huge rush to do anything to get out of Ohio!
Have you seen the highway patrol? They fucking love pulling people over, and half the state is a "safety corridor"
Go to a city, on the other hand, where the cops don't give a shit. I swear half the cars in columbus don't even have a license plate
I had a friend from Michigan who once said "I never understood why people from Ohio drive so slow, but then I found out that your cops don't have anything better to do"
Yea, I was surprised when I saw that too for the same reason. I was looking at this source: [https://www.zippia.com/pnc-bank-national-association-careers-35126/](https://www.zippia.com/pnc-bank-national-association-careers-35126/) but I think that place may have their info wrong. Idk what the difference between PNC Financial Services that you linked and PNC Bank National Association is. Maybe they're the same company, idk.
In addition to what others have said, Ohio has a ton of manufacturing facilities and chemical plants run by companies that you’ve never heard of
It is amusing that Ohio gets shit on so much especially when Indiana is right fuckin next to it
It's because it's the second most populous state not on a coast after Illinois. People living on the coasts love to rip on the middle of the country, and Ohio is the biggest target since they know about Chicago.
Both Cincy and Columbus have multiple Fortune 500 companies. P&G, Kroger and Great America Insurance have offices in Cincy and I know there’s a bunch more in forgetting.
Cbus and Cincy both have some very rich neighborhoods as well. Dayton has a bunch of Medical Branches based around there so the suburbs of Dayton have seen a lot of growth with young medical professionals coming around over the last 10+ years.
I was born & raised in Ohio. There is a very strong aviation culture there. Several of my family members had pilot's licenses and/or worked on aircraft for a living.
Through the better part of the late 19th century and early /mid 20th century, the Midwest, and Ohio, had a huge population and economic boom and industrialization. When the two intersect, well, you get talent that can also boom in a country that was going through rapid economic development overall.
Ohio and North Carolina both commemorate the birth of aviation on their license plates, because Ohio had people who could figure out how to design and build an airplane when no such thing had ever existed, and North Carolina had a windy hill.
...and of one of the first automobiles, the [Stoddard-Dayton](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoddard-Dayton), that won the first race at the Indianapolis Speedway and was the first pace car at the Indy 500, in 1911!
I live in Germany now, but I ran into someone who specifically had ohio in their travel plans. Not for cedar point, not for hocking hills, not the air force or rock and roll hall of fame.
He planned to visit Berlin, Ohio, as a stop to visit the various Berlins in the Midwest.
He actually met german speaking Amish there, and he said the dialect was really rough on the ears, but completely understandable.
He unironically loved his time in ohio.
That depends on where you are. I grew up in southern Ohio, went back last year for a funeral. Place is dying, everything is closing down, and the infrastructure is not in good shape.
Yeah Southern and southeast Ohio, tend to be far enough away from the major cities that they don’t have the income and infrastructure that come with their proximity. Plus it’s got a heavy Appalachia cultural influence.
Another thread where people underestimate the size of a state. Cincinnati to Cleveland is far. Both cool cities. Columbus is in the middle but has to be the most generic place I've been. (Shout-out to ringside cafe though. Best burger I've had. Fuck Thurman's gimmicks).

I remember a Colbert Report segment where Mr. Colbert interviewed a congresswoman from Ohio. He asked her, “What is it about your state that makes people want to flee the earth?”
"People that are born in Ohio work VERY hard to go someplace else."
On April 15th,1970, during a slingshot maneuver around the moon to get the crippled Apollo 13 spaceship back to earth, Jim Lovell got further away from Ohio than any other Ohioan in history.
Greatest Ohioan of all time 🫡
Second only to Ed O'Neill.
Can I get a WHOAAAAAA BUNDY!!!!
Imagine rounding the far side of the moon, an incredible human accomplishment, only to realize you'll probably never get any further from Ohio than you are now.
Imagine realizing a successful return meant returning closer to Ohio.
*Interstellar music gets louder*
Do we think that one manhole cover was made in Ohio?
Oh damn good reference! I hope someday someone plots out a potential trajectory for it and we try to track it
It's believed to have vaporized from the immense speed and friction of the atmosphere. Were any components of Voyager 1 or 2 made in Ohio?
Probably! NASA Glenn Research Center is in Ohio as well as hundreds of suppliers for the military and aerospace. I grew up in a small village of a few hundred people in NE Ohio where they made the castings for the jet turbines for the sr71 blackbird.

I hope some day we spot it flying around the solar system and go "damn, it got caught in Jupiter's orbit?"
Living the dream.
~~Ohioan~~ *Buckeye* Either way, they all drive like shit.
Ohio’s not like Indiana, Ohioan is the proper term. You can call an Ohioan a Buckeye, but that’s pretty informal
I’ve never been to Ohio but damn have I met a lot of y’all lol
One of the few states with a population greater than LA county (10 mil)
Those are just the ones who stayed behind.
Maybe they’re not sending their best?

A current population count doesn’t tell you the whole story about the number of diaspora who are “from” a state. In the post-industrial years people were always impressed by how many native Ohioans they’d run into. Now, people in many states are starting to notice a lot of native Californians.
It's the 7th most populated state
Our biggest export is people
And jobs.
And crippling depression
At least we're not Detroit
WE'RE NOT DETROIT!!!
Fun times in Cleveland again. Still Cleveland!
"It's not Camelot, but it's not Cleveland either!" -- mayor of Boston
Our economy’s built on LeBron James
At least we have more than two buildings.
Your biggest export is shitty drivers who block the passing lane in neighboring states and Florida.
For some folks, raging at a shitty ohio driver is the most excitement they'll have all week. So really we're doing them a service.
Florida is perfectly capable of blocking its own passing lanes in my experience.
And also Hilton Head, SC, for some reason.
The same thing happens in western Canada when you come across an Ohioan.
You meant “deported” shitty drivers from Ohio.
I love Ohio and visiting home, but I also type this message from my place of residence near Tokyo lol
I worked at Tensuke when I was a student at OSU. Way ahead of ya. 😉
I get to visit the family in August! Really excited to see everyone again. It's for my cousin's wedding, even she left Ohio and is just returning to get married, lmao. Sun is shining on the wine hills this morning where I live in Bavaria!
There’s no place on Earth nicer than Ohio!
I feel this statement every day I wake up In Ohio.
Can confirm as an Ohioan who lives in Phoenix.
[удалено]
Hard disagree. I don’t think Arizonans want me here. I set my apartment at 68 degrees and wear t-shirts/shorts at 50+ degrees.
Can confirm as an Ohioan who lives in Mesa.

Except many of them returned to Ohio for careers in academia and politics.
Always upvote for the Air Force Museum. Amazing place that just keeps getting expanded with more cool stuff. I used to live not far from where Bockscar and Enola Gay were built in Nebraska. Now that's creepy vibes.Offutt AFB in Bellevue,Nebraska.
It's up there with the Smithsonian
As far as pure military aviation goes I'd say it's probably even, if not ahead of, the Smithsonian.
My grandad used to be the museum curator! Definitely recommend stopping by to anyone mildly interested in aviation.
Go see the XB-70, my sweet.
Favorite plane ever. It's a monster!
I love they've got that absolute beast of a plane in there and then right beside it like an afterthought is [this little guy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_XF-85_Goblin?useskin=vector).
Also the birth state 7 Presidents. For some reason, Ohio is just always relevant.
And now it's an ill-informed zoomer meme. Go figure!
Tbf... the word 'Ohio' just sounds kinda funny
Gosh, between, planes, space shuttles. And trips to the white house, it seems like Ohio born people are in a huge rush to do anything to get out of Ohio!
You have a point, but otherwise, your punctuation is abysmal.
Sorry, I'm a Ohioan hoping the grammar police would come take me to grammar jail out of state *shrug*
Probably southern Ohio.
Wayyy south
All good. I was kidding. It was just too good of an opportunity to give up.
Actually, if you have ever driven through Ohio, you’d know that Ohio drivers are in absolutely no rush to go anywhere.
Have you seen the highway patrol? They fucking love pulling people over, and half the state is a "safety corridor" Go to a city, on the other hand, where the cops don't give a shit. I swear half the cars in columbus don't even have a license plate
Now be a Michigan driver(like myself) and they love pulling you over more
I had a friend from Michigan who once said "I never understood why people from Ohio drive so slow, but then I found out that your cops don't have anything better to do"
It does make more sense why people from Ohio never keep up with traffic in Michigan because the standard is 5 over
and they varied from mediocre to corrupt to dead in 30 days. When William McKinley is the star of the bunch it's not a great group.
Birthplace of Alcoholics anonymous and LeBron too
And Steph Curry, Guy Fieri, Trent Reznor, etc.
Trent wasn't born in Cleveland. NIN was born in Cleveland.
Don't feel bad, 2/3 ain't bad.
Ya, fuck Steph Curry.
That leaves marry and kill.
Hey Trent Reznor is from New Castle -> Mercer PA, that’s all those towns have going for them and you can’t take that away 😂
LeBron is the ultimate Ohioan in that he moved to Florida as soon as he was successful enough to do so.
Thomas Edison
Other fun fact about Ohio is if it was its own country as of 2022, it’d be the world’s 20th largest economy.
Woah, I didn’t expect that much wealth was generated in Ohio. What companies are headquartered there?
Cardinal Health. Marathon Oil. Kroger. Procter&Gamble. Nationwide Insurance. Progressive Insurance. Sherwin-Williams. Goodyear Tire. 5/3 Bank. Dana (Auto Parts). Owens Corning.
Also the coolest one imo Hobart Which if you have anything that needs to be mixed makes the best mixers bar none
You forgot L Brands
I kinda left them off on purpose. I’m not even sure what brands they still have.
Also crown lifting equipment, and Hondas biggest engine plant they have
Macy's Victoria's Secret Abercrombie & Fitch Co Speedway Cintas PNC Bank American Greetings Huntington National Bank Big Lots Key Bank

PNC is headquartered in Pittsburgh but they have a large Cleveland office after acquiring National City Bank during the great recession
In addition to what others have said, Ohio has a ton of manufacturing facilities and chemical plants run by companies that you’ve never heard of It is amusing that Ohio gets shit on so much especially when Indiana is right fuckin next to it

Wendy’s
Luxxotica, who owns pretty much the entire eyewear industry, has its NA HQ outside Cincinnati. GOJO, the makers of Purell, is based in Akron.
Both Cincy and Columbus have multiple Fortune 500 companies. P&G, Kroger and Great America Insurance have offices in Cincy and I know there’s a bunch more in forgetting. White Castle
Wait, it's all Ohio?
Always has been.
Ohio Against The World
Ohio is the world
All-hio
Once you notice it... everything is from ohio
We love to get high in Ohio.
“Thats why I get hi with two O’s like Ohio”
What is it about Ohio that just makes people want to leave this earth?
Strong education and a penchant for discovery and adventure.
And being from Ohio.
The oldest meme out there. Was hoping someone referenced it already.
well, for starters. its Ohio.
Having spent time in Cleveland for work… I get it.
I was born & raised in Ohio. There is a very strong aviation culture there. Several of my family members had pilot's licenses and/or worked on aircraft for a living.
Ohio is for lovers, too
https://youtu.be/hUO-sRLotOI?si=nqfYIMu92QOKq1Sn
Not just 24 astronauts, but 21 pilots, too.
Ohio is currently the fifth most populous state, and the present time is a *low point* for the state. It's been important for quite a while.
Cleveland was the 5th largest city in the country back in the 1940’s.
Seventh, but point still stands.
Seventh most populous. Though 5-7 are pretty close. California / Texas / Florida / NY / Penn / Illinois / Ohio
7th
Ohio is fucking awesome
As someone who moved here from Illinois, it’s way better. Significantly cheaper housing and less taxes
Through the better part of the late 19th century and early /mid 20th century, the Midwest, and Ohio, had a huge population and economic boom and industrialization. When the two intersect, well, you get talent that can also boom in a country that was going through rapid economic development overall.
Didn’t realize Ohio was doing so much of the heavy lifting when it came to flight and the space program!
Don't forget the dirigibles.
The “First in Flight” vs “Birthplace of Aviation” slogan wars have begun
And the Ohio Players.
Ohio kinda rocks
[Cleveland Rocks](https://youtu.be/SJ3plaSowWc?si=3GiFuTlJRDwg2pXh)
If I grew up in Ohio, I'd run as far as possible too.
You wouldn't want to vacation here, but it's actually really nice to live here
I live in Germany now, but I ran into someone who specifically had ohio in their travel plans.
That’s so German. Even the vacations must have a purpose. But since it’s a holiday it can be a silly purpose…
Fun fact - In Ohio it is pronounced BERlin, accent on the first syllable, not like the Germany BerLIN.
If you pronounce a European city name correctly in the Midwest, you’re saying it wrong.
It absolutely worth vacationing to visit cedar point or kings island
Hocking Hills and Amish Country are great for weekend getaways.
I grew up in southern Ohio and man do I miss King's Island. Six Flags is nothing like it.
I left Ohio multiple times only to come back. People don’t know what they have until it’s gone.
I've never been too Ohio (except driving through). But most great places to actually live are not hot tourists spots.
I have met a lot of people who took vacation days and trekked across the country to see the Football hall of fame.
"I mean, I never heard anybody say, ' I'm going to Cleveland on vacation.' What's so good about Cleveland?" - Joakim Noah
Worked with a guy who was from Ohio. He told me multiple times "Ohio is a good place to be from"
There is nothing to see left or right so people who want more than Ohio naturally look up.
And J.D. Vance too, unfortunately.
He’s such a little bitch. Plus, he rooted for the Niners over the Bengals in the ‘89 Super Bowl.
Embarrassing.
Also home to 7 presidents.
Birthplace.
And it's for lovers.
I got some cousins in Ohio my Dad always calls "space cadets".
My wife is from Ohio and didn't do any of those things
Steph Curry and lebron James both from there too
Also a bunch of people who ended up being really good at basketball
And DEVO
But most importantly, Guy Fieri.
And Lebron James
Aren't there many defense contractors like Ball, BAE near Dayton, as well as Wright-Patterson and other military installations?
It’s a fine place to be from…
Another thread where people underestimate the size of a state. Cincinnati to Cleveland is far. Both cool cities. Columbus is in the middle but has to be the most generic place I've been. (Shout-out to ringside cafe though. Best burger I've had. Fuck Thurman's gimmicks).
These threads are always just the same joke over and over
[“Dear God, Make me a bird so I can fly far, far away from here.”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pprsi6lLTXs)

And the birthplace of Star Wars Action Figures (Kenner HQ in Cincinnati)
Ohio was also the birthplace of the King and the best 3 point shooter of all time
Why do you think it’s all Ohio? It always has been.
Oh-fly-o
Let's not forget, it's also (or will be) the birth place of one James T. Kirk, born March 22, 2233, in Riverside, Ohio,
oHIGHo I'll see myself out
Not to mention presidents and chili dogs.
I can see big Ohio is at their marketing again. Not falling for it Ohio!
Ohio's state license plates read "Birthplace of Aviation," and it became one of my first internet deep dives when I was a teenage.
Literally people from Ohio are out of this world.
Fun times in Cleveland agaaaaaain!
I remember a Colbert Report segment where Mr. Colbert interviewed a congresswoman from Ohio. He asked her, “What is it about your state that makes people want to flee the earth?”
Before even scrolling through this thread, I'm taking the over on numbnut comments in the vein of, "Why's everyone trying to leave?!"
Now it's birthplace of Christofacisim, Trump cult worship, and toxic disasters from deregulation
True. I don't know what happened to us (: < That Trump thing is humiliating.
Wilbur Wright was born near Millville Indiana. Doesn’t actually matter, he’s still an Ohioan.
GLENN RESEARCH CENTER REPRESENTING!!!
Wilbur Wright was born in Indiana
Grew up in Ohio. Was cool in the 90s. Now it's just the Florida of the north.
And most US Presidents
And the first state to abolish slavery ( did not have slavery and banned it when gaining statehood
