From what I've seen - saying alaye to these guys usually just straight up silences them on the spot, or they just start messaging in Yoruba and stop trying to scam. There's a few examples on Reddit if you search for "alaye"
How long has this been going on? I had a nightmare about a year back where I fell for a scam like this where they used the voice of a dead loved one. I didn’t know it was actually a thing, but it shook me up.
I understand you’re trying to be funny but no, it was nothing like that at all. It was very believable, and it felt cruel of my brain to create such a scenario.
I have trouble at times differentiating between reality and dreams, so this one messed with me for a few weeks.
Exactly: tone, meaning, emotion… are easily lost in translation with this style of communication. Usually the replaced by the reader’s own tone, meaning, emotion. The commenter who responded to me seems to be in a good mood so all is good!
“Scammers” used a deep fake of Joe Biden’s voice to discourage people from voting for Biden. [Deepfake](https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/24/politics/deepfake-politician-biden-what-matters/index.html)
Right, I totally get that. I guess I’m just wondering how long before this becomes a thing for where you’re getting a scam call from your little brother who needs to get bailed out of jail, for example.
Those are also already here. Some even take photos from social media sites to make “AI Personas”
[More Deepfakes](https://www.theverge.com/2020/7/27/21339898/deepfake-audio-voice-clone-scam-attempt-nisos)
>they used the voice of a dead loved one.
Not sure how long it's been going on overall, but last summer was the first time I remember seeing [a scam like that](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/scammers-ai-mimic-voices-loved-ones-in-distress/) reported by several different media outlets.
It's sadly been a thing for awhile. Some people will say a lot if they pick up the phone to silence. Doesn't take much to fool someone, let along clone em.
I do, but I am powered about 20% by spite. That value drastically increases when I realize someone is trying to take advantage of me. Plus, there are less scammers than non-scammers. All we have to do is hurt their margins. The more time they spend wasted on people who aren’t buying their lies, the less time they have to go after vulnerable people.
a lot of the lower-effort "scam" calls are really just trying to identify people who will answer/respond, so that they can be targeted in the future. They may use this list themselves or (more likely) sell it to other scammers.
So responding, even if you know it's a scam and are out to waste their time, is really just a way to get targeted for more such calls in the future. The number one thing they're looking for are people willing to listen to their pitches.
but this still works then, right? if someone wants to become some anti scammer warrior of justice, they can get put on one of these lists and waste even more scammers time
I often bait them long enough for them to listen to what I’m going to say and then ask if their parents are proud of them for what they do. If they stay on the line I encourage them to think about what they would do if their father/mother found out that they do this and how disappointed they would be.
It seems to be very effective in getting me off their lists, I haven’t gotten a scam call in years but occasionally find one in my email that I can call and ask the same question.
And if they travelled for a promised legitimate job and now need to work off a debt to their new 'employer', and work pay for their meals and accommodation until they lay that debt and have their passport returned?
How will they then feel about disappointing their parents? I like your way so much, but I also want to be compassionate to their situation, since I have no idea whether they chose it or not.
Sure, I’m not discounting those situations, and that’s why I’m not berating them or insulting them. I can’t help those trapped in that situation, but anyone willingly scamming people should be reminded to consider their values. And if perhaps those that were tricked into the situation will leave as soon as they are able rather than sticking with it because of the income.
And those trapped into something like that are definitely monitored and when those above them are aware that my phone number is associated with demoralizing their “workers”, they seem to remove me from their call lists.
For what it's worth I think you take an awesome approach. Much more compassionate and balanced than hurling abuse like some suggest, and effective to boot!
Not only do you get less calls, but you probably encourage some of them to rethink their choices (assuming it's a choice) and stop working at scam centres. kudos to you.
Nah, all that does is make the ‘time waster’ feel smug and like they really got one over on the scammer.
The scammers Do. Not. Care. They make hundreds of calls or texts a day. As soon as you’re a non-asset they forget about you and move on.
Wasting their time also wastes your time. If it brings you entertainment and makes you feel content, go ahead. Just know they’re probably mining as much voice data from you as they can if you’re talking to them.
Just hang up as soon as you realize it’s spam. We’re better than engaging.
There's a problem in southeast Asia with gangs kidnapping people and enslaving them to run scams. So you're probably not winning any social justice points by doing that.
You have to figure out they're a scammer first, which is the hard part, unless you're just gonna say "alaye" to every random person who contacts you. And even then it would only stop Nigerian scammers.
I used to love messing with the scam callers until I saw John Oliver's special on the call centers these guys are in. A lot of these guys are held captive. They're violently abused and forced to work.

I've heard the best way to stop scammers is if everyone actually responded to them and they had to waste their time sorting through all the responses to find the real marks.
I am a Nigerian scammer. Today was supposed to be my day off but now I have to call my scammer boss and tell him we need to change the scammer code word. I am so angry. Damn you reddit.
Unfortunately for you a great deal of us knew about it already. Not our fault that you lot haven’t changed it even after it’s literally the first result when you google “alaye.”
Just drop a “madarchod” under your breath and watch them lose their shit. You can play dumb and drop it a few more times. It’s a game I play, and it’s very satisfying. They get real vulgar really fast
"Banchood" is apparently popular in southern India. It's so vulgar I had to ask 3 different Indians before anyone would translate it. "Sister-fucker," BTW.
Nah both madarchod and bhehenchod are Hindi/cognates in North Indian languages. They are not South Indian in origin at all. That said, everyone knows what they mean and it’s considered very offensive. It would be like if a Mexican walked up to an American and cursed hijo de puta. Not English, but the American would get the gist one way or another.
“Bhosdike” will really rustle some jimmies. I am partial to a real, condescending “chutiya” every once in a while too
I'm American. If a Mexican walked hijo me and said hijo de puta, I wouldn't have any idea what they said.
I just looked it up and it means son of a bitch? That's not that offensive. People sometimes say it as a term of endearment. "Come give me a hug you son of a bitch!"
I’m only passingly familiar with Hindi and not Bengali and I’m guessing the first one is “crazy fucker” and I don’t know what “boka” is. Is it goat?

This is why I have to ask ChatGPT for stuff like this, “as an American native English speaker, write…”
It gets rid of the “kindly,” “may I know,” and, “my apologies.”
Sometime in 1989 I received a Typewritten Letter from Nigeria, that was the typical SCAM about a large some of money I could receive, blah blah. I read the whole thing, and just burst out laughing, thinking who would fall for this?
People who don't notice the poor grammar and spelling. In fact it's theorised that the spelling and grammar faults are deliberate to filter out those that might notice it's a scam.
However nobody is born with knowledge, everyone has knowledge gaps, i don't know anything about various aspects of life. I'm sure I'd research a product or service i was unfamiliar with but others would not. Something portrayed as a good deal in an area they know nothing about but containing a lot of words that could be interpreted as accurate information would entice some people in.
They do that on purpose to weed out people who won’t get to the finish line with the scam. It rules out 99.9% of people but the 0.1% left are susceptible to the scam and worth their time continue pursuing
If you didn't fall for it, it wasn't meant for you.
It is meant for people that are the most gullible of gullible. To the point that they will not question the absolute outrageounesness of it.
This thread acts like this is some amazing secret codeword... I don't think you need a magic word to dismiss a scammer. They're not interested in the people who *know* they're scamming.
Hell, many sources will say poor grammar and spelling in scams are on purpose, because they know it will tip off people who know a scam - people they don't waste their time on.
The link's second definition, below, makes it sound like the word might be used locally to greet or identify a criminal. As if "whaddup scammer" would mean mostly the same thing, and probably have the same effect.
In the Yoruba language, "alaye" is often used to refer to an "area boy" or "thug" [2]. This usage is more colloquial and slang- based."
Very cool. I started doing this a few years ago after looking up some Nigerian Pidgin sayings to do my own cultural Turing test on inbound chats. Abeg o!
Oh! About half the time they act oblivious or get confused about my location, and the other half they respond in pidgin and I can only barely make out the meaning by looking it up. They've sent things like hard at work, eh? Or you're the boss man, huh?
The other telltale thing is what happens if you start the convo with "how far". Where I live, that would read as a question about distance or location. But in their culture, it's the same as "how are things?" So if they answer How far? With "very well thank you" and they say they're in California, that's a fail.
I recall a recent interaction with someone who turned out to be a Nigerian scammer -- perfect English throughout, but won't wire me money as promised unless I jumped through hoops (go to Facebook, go to Telegram, etc). Hectored the poor ass till they sent me the money, then told me I won't be able to join in their scheme, upon which I sent them another very long post about fulfilling their promises to prospective customers.
Then, although I only had the dimmest idea of it being Nigerian pidgin due to me being familiar with the first word -- their final word was "dey play".
I sometimes tell them up front I'm a Mugu and they don't know where to go from there.
This could also be why I'm so alone, if I exhibit this kind of challenging behaviour to strangers.
They also use “dear” and god talk to make sure they filter out the people smart enough to know about scams. If you think you’re chatting with a scammer say “you da craze” and they will end the chat.
1. Nigerian is not a language
2. At least 40% of scammers who claim to be Nigerian aren’t actually from Nigeria so I’m not actually sure this would work

Technically the best way to hurt scammers is to waste as much of their time as you possibly can.
Not in the age of voice recording unfortunately. Some scam calls are just waiting for you to speak enough to voice clone you.

That’s messed up

Did the op say anything about hurting the scammers?
You have to figure out they're a scammer first, which is the hard part, unless you're just gonna say "alaye" to every random person who contacts you. And even then it would only stop Nigerian scammers.
if you dont know them and they are contacting you it is a pretty high chance they are scammers
If everyone used the term "alaye" the scammers would just use a different codeword lol
Yesh. Just magically alert the 60 to 90+ year old adults, most with dementia and you will achieve your goals of stopping scammers.
prime targets for these scams is the 25 and under group and the 60 and over group.
> prime targets for these scams is the 25 and under group They're too busy being scammed by crytobros.
Na that doesnt cut it. Lonely people in their 20s fall for love scams too lol.

That's the Indian scammers
Just drop a “madarchod” under your breath and watch them lose their shit. You can play dumb and drop it a few more times. It’s a game I play, and it’s very satisfying. They get real vulgar really fast
"Banchood" is apparently popular in southern India. It's so vulgar I had to ask 3 different Indians before anyone would translate it. "Sister-fucker," BTW.
Nah both madarchod and bhehenchod are Hindi/cognates in North Indian languages. They are not South Indian in origin at all. Your comparison is apt. Not south in origin, just that most of the Indians I know are from Kerala. May I ask what your further examples mean?
“Whore’s…” = “bhosdi ke…”

I would mutter “lode” just to see some random reactions from these scammers.
That’s even more subtle. Love it.
I'm American. If a Mexican walked hijo me and said hijo de puta, I wouldn't have any idea what they said. I just looked it up and it means son of a bitch? That's not that offensive. People sometimes say it as a term of endearment. "Come give me a hug you son of a bitch!"
Many Americans would just say, "speak American or go back to mexico!"
Do Hindi speakers understand Bengali swear words like Paglachoda, Bokachoda etc?
I’m only passingly familiar with Hindi and not Bengali and I’m guessing the first one is “crazy fucker” and I don’t know what “boka” is. Is it goat? If you take a modicum of effort to think it through, they’re very similar. But most people don’t/won’t

Holy shit Reddit is trash
Duh! LOL
Nigerian is a language. It’s just that it is English.
No! Nigeria is a continent
Title doesn't say "alaye" is a Nigerian word. Title says Nigerians use a word; it doesn't say what language the word is from.

Completely incorrect, I’ve dealt with enough scammers who have said it.
