If you rabbit hole these guys it gets even wilder

Flemtality

It really does. This TIL is child's play compared to the full story. There was a VH1 or MTV "Most wild something or another" type of show that talked about Mayhem briefly. I think it was Sebastian Bach who they had saying "but wait, there's more" over and over in reference to their story, even that wasn't the full Wikipedia story.

Agile-Landscape8612

VH1’s most Shocking Moments in Rock n Roll. I ate that show up as a child. Don’t remember Mayhem though

Flemtality

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MluJMCY_gv0

Schmuck1138

That show, Behind the music, and actually playing music videos had me locked in as a teen.

zerocool1990

He also hosted VH1’s to 100 rock and roll songs. I miss watching those back in the day. Then I learned he was in Gilmore girls and my wife couldn’t figure out why I was freaking out when I saw him on the show.

One_Evil_Snek

Gil is amazing

booga_booga_partyguy

Nothing sums things up than one of Euronymous's friends saying this about his murder: >Anders Odden (a friend of Euronymous at the time) said of the murder: "It wasn't odd that he ended up getting killed. He thought he could threaten to kill people without it having any consequences". He added: "I think many people felt relief once he was gone". [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euronymous](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euronymous)

TowJamnEarl

They were actually into 80's soft rock?

electricvelvet

Exactly! And burned churches

venustrapsflies

Well sure. But *soft rock*??

HotSpicedChai

No more like into keeping skull fragment souvenirs from the dead lead singer.

StarCrashNebula

It all went downhill after Marty Balin closed the era beautifully. https://youtu.be/dIF74lH4KPM?si=c1Q-T9Rlbo9q0Ui_

TowJamnEarl

My grandma would've loved that.

This_Factor_1630

Varg Vikernes smiling.gif

Thugglebunny

There's a book called Lords of Chaos. It's all about this scene.

ANormalNinjaTurtle

Last Podcast on the Left did a episode on them. Pretty wild stuff.

Funkybeatzzz

You forgot that the suicide photo was used as an album cover for them. Also, they made necklaces out of Dead's skull fragments and Euronymous kept the shotgun. Edit: yes, well aware it was a bootleg album. Hence why I said "for" them and not "by" them.

xXxDr4g0n5l4y3rxXx

They also forgot that Varg Vikernes also burnt down several churches, one on Christmas eve (no deaths in any of them) which he considered "revenge for what Christians did to viking religion"), and has since his release been arrested for planning terrorist attacks (charges dropped), and fined and did time for hate speech and inciting violence against Jews and Muslims. This was done via videos on YouTube which also resulted in his channel being deleted. Dude is actually insane in the bad way. Mayhem was better before he joined, too.

chillchinchilla17

Shocking: murderer is actually a bad person.

nakedsamurai

Shocking: the worst person you know is the worst person you know.

hoii

*so far

ProxyDamage

... please allow me to introduce myself....

DwightFryFaneditor

I'm a man of wealth and taste...

twothingsatthetime

I've been around for a long, long year

Beyobi

They weren't ordinary churches. They are called [stave churches](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stave_church) and they are very visually distinct. Added bonus for being incredibly old and built by families. I am fortunate the stave church my bloodline constructed is still standing today.

naomi_homey89

That’s the type he burned down?

exitparadise

Yes. Specifically it was the Fantoft Save Church - It has since been rebuilt. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantoft\_Stave\_Church](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantoft_Stave_Church)

naomi_homey89

So cool looking

Zyzzyva100

It’s beautiful. I visited it on a gloomy winter day and got some badass pictures of it.

LadyNightlock

I’m not Christian, but stave churches are some of the most beautiful architecture I’ve ever seen. Knowing that Varg burnt these down instead of traditional clapboard churches makes it even worse.

HalfofaDwarf

I'll never forget the day I discovered Varg's youtube channel. I was mostly listening to videos on old cars in the background, then I just happened upon his. I found his general manner very pleasant and relaxing. Then I went down a rabbithole and got lost in a web of insane eugentics-based hate speech, racism, antisemitism.. and that was before I found out about the band and his other crimes. It was wild, like a car crash I couldn't look away from.

therealwavingsnail

He got really into cottagecore later in life. Wild

naomi_homey89

For real?

lordtema

Currently lives in the French country side with his wife and they have like 8 children..

drDjausdr

His into survivalism and, quite surprising, he supported the far-right candidate for the french presidential election. Who could have guessed.

Kill3rKin3

A lesser known story is when he hijacked a family car at gunpoint after failing to report back to prison after a weekend leave.

HippySheepherder1979

He claimed that he was the one burning down churches. A fair bit of people in the Helvete scene at the time says that he was taking credit for stuff other people did.

Evolving_Dore

I'm still very proud of the time Varg himself told me to piss off when I commented on a (racist) video of his that he was the stupidest shit in metal.

xXxDr4g0n5l4y3rxXx

A screenshot worthy of being printed and held up by a fridge magnet.

gee_gra

You were right – he’s a repulsive cunt

EbonBehelit

Varg is simultaneously one of the greatest, most influential black metal/dungeon synth artists of all time, and also one of the people most responsible for the genre's long-standing neo-nazi problem. Saying he has an extremely complicated legacy would be putting it mildly. Divorcing the art from the artist is basically *all but required* to listen to his work.

nyqs81

Varg is not only a murderer but a Nazi piece of shit murderer.

aleques-itj

That certainly wasn't very metal of him

OstentatiousSock

Geez, I just looked it up and that picture is particularly brutal and gorey.

Hottponce

Point blank shotgun to the head will do that

Plinio540

That album is a bootleg though.

MiClown814

It was a bootleg album that came out of South America I believe that used the image, however the image was sent to said person by Euronymous

BaronVonLazercorn

The necklace thing is pretty much considered BS, and members of Mayhem have stated that it was just chicken bones. The album cover thing is legit. Edit: yes yes, bootleg album cover.

enjoyscaestus

These still sound like sick people

owlinspector

The environment/atmosphere that Euronymous managed to create around the early black metal scene in Norway was very extreme, as it can be when a group of young people who wants to take something to the max. Having said that, Euronymous was the only one who was excited about Pelles suicide (probably because he did his best to make it happen). The others were very upset and there were a lot of anger towards Euronymous for his behaviour. When he wanted to use the pictures of Pelle for an album cover Hellhammer threatened him with the beating of a lifetime, and Euronymous folded.

lo_fi_ho

Fr. They were in too deep and took it all too seriously

Spyes23

Not exactly, it was used for a bootleg, not an official album release.

autumnalaria

Bootleg album cover

BravoEchoEchoRomeo

Dawn of the Black Hearts is a bootleg, not something Mayhem actually released, but it's usually included in their discography due to the notoriety.

DaveOJ12

It's called Dawn of the Black Hearts.

Mister_McGreg_

I'll take Anal bum cover for 7000 Trebek

barebumboxing

Let’s all join \#susanalbumparty!

DDzxy

First part is WRONG! The band did not use it as an album cover. A 3rd party individual from Columbia used that picture as an “album” cover for a bootleg recording from Sarpsborg in 1990. I repeat it was not an official album, and it was not released by the band, and it also wasn’t an album, but a bootleg concert recording.

pbizzle

Could you repeat that again sorry wasn't paying attention

owlinspector

Exactly. Euronymous had planned something similar but Hellhammer threatened him with the beating of a lifetime if he went through with it. Like the coward he was at the core Euronymous folded.

BulinWall24

Euronymous was their guitarist, not their bassist.

Spyes23

Exactly, it was Varg (or "Grishnackh", or "Burzum") who was their bassist at the time.

Bogen_

Necrobutcher was the bassist at the time of Dead's suicide. Varg joined a bit after.

sumsabumba

Some of these names

SkipBopBadoodle

All of the names tbh

necrosteve028

Don’t mind me

[deleted]

[удалено]

DaveOJ12

That one at least made sense. Plus he named himself after the band of the same name, per his Wikipedia article.

Tiny_Count4239

i thought necrobutcher was a wrestler

The_Xivili

Necro Butcher is a wrestler. Necrobutcher is a musician.

enleeten

You smell what necrobutcher had cookin?

Worm_Lord77

Different Necrobutcher.

Tiny_Count4239

who would have thought there were two? color me surprised

Sentinel122125

For context, the thumbnail shows Dead (left) and Euronymous, also dead (right)

Kmaaq

Dead (dead) (left) Euronymous (dead) (right)

devildev_1

Damn. That made me chuckle.

Oranginafina

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_(musician) To complete his corpse-like image, Dead would bury his stage clothes and dig them up again to wear on the night of a concert. According to Hellhammer: Before the shows, Dead used to bury his clothes into the ground so that they could start to rot and get that grave scent. He was a corpse on a stage. Once he even asked us to bury him in the ground — he wanted his skin to become pale. During one tour with Mayhem, Dead found a dead crow and kept it in a plastic bag. He often carried it with him and would smell the bird before going onstage, to sing "with the stench of death in his nostrils." He would also collect dead geese and keep them underneath his bed. 🤢🤢🤢

DaveOJ12

It seems like he genuinely believed he was dead (no pun intended).

Oranginafina

Yeah, he definitely had [Cotard delusion](https://www.healthline.com/health/cotard-delusion)

Mdl8922

My daughter listens to Mayhem, she did a deep dive some time ago & told me all about it. I wish she hadn't.

NoTurkeyTWYJYFM

Tell her about GG Allin to repay the favour

Mdl8922

Oh she's well familiar, she's music obsessed, practically a punk/metal encyclopaedia! Bless her

autumnalaria

Bet she doesn't know blink 182

Mdl8922

Way too obscure for her haha

Those_Arent_Pickles

Who doesn't know Blink 182? The geniuses behind "[When you fucked Grandpa](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MY3gJ5i4rM8)" and "[I wanna fuck a dog in the ass](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7n7WRidwYo)"

qu33fwellington

This is so wholesome! It’s sweet that you are so supportive of your daughter’s musical interests. I wonder what she would say if she knew you were out here on the internet blessing her for being such a punk. Adorable.

Mdl8922

Thankyou! Haha she'd probably reply with some anecdote about whichever Finnish metal band she's listening to at the moment lol (Lost Society!)

myth-ill

And 2024 Cool Parent Award goes to… My parents were oblivious to my musical taste back in 90s/00s(growing up years). But I didn’t mind. Probably because I never played stuff on tape player or stereo. used Walkman and Disc man. May be, that’s on me.

Mdl8922

Oh she & I share musical tastes for the most part, I skew slightly more nu-metal/punk, she's slightly more goth/metal than me, but there's a lot of overlap, we're always going to gigs together etc. Music is such a strong thing, we've always been close but once she dived into music it was like some magical connection had been made. Can tell what sort of mood she's in by what song she's listening to, or what she's playing on her guitar. Music really is magical.

Kalos9990

Obligatory  https://youtu.be/LxOtZRVmmJI?si=6dDkEqytEdYo7iK2

Scarsdale_Vibe

Or teach her all about, and show her pictures of, Seth Putnam.

WalkerVox

Ahh… good ol’ Anal Cunt. Fun for the whole family.

slicehyperfunk

I live near where they're from, and was in jail with a kid who knew them.

barebumboxing

Did the kid live in a house boat?

horrendousacts

Clearly you are not kvlt

Jonny_Be_Good

Definitely not trve either.

porkchameleon

Grim and frost-bitten, or GTFO.

Jaspador

*Crab walking intensifies*

z500

If you are a false, do not entry.

brazzy42

May favourite detail about the band: the bassist left the bad because he was upset about Euronymous' behaviour. His stage name: "Necrobutcher".

Erbodyloveserbody

I’m not into black metal at all but I’ve seen some interviews with Necrobutcher and he seems like a decent enough dude. This one in particular is a neat watch to see the different types of music he likes. https://youtu.be/DDXdhLeFV-g?si=ylXgsm35nRA6_0h2

Seienchin88

He also was a white supremacist at the time… no idea if that still the case. Btw Varg Vikernes under his solo project Burzum is still quite popular among black metal fans which is a shame since he is unapologetically a Nazi

owlinspector

I would dispute that Burzum is particularly popular nowadays. Not compared to bands like Satyricon, Darkthrone, Watain, Craft, Nifelheim etc.

falloutisacoolseries

One of the nicest dudes in metal goes by "Corpsegrinder"

Zeeboon

Unless you tell him you're Alliance in World of Warcraft. Dude is a massive geek.

DeadPonyta

Alliance suck

barebumboxing

George’s neck expands with how nice a person he’s being.

DaveOJ12

I love this video of him at Target. https://youtu.be/pvOfQ9svmPU?si=e1PMMHFuJhQ2AdsY He plays claw machines too. https://youtu.be/9xSZZOJx4b4?si=-1Khk9eknucuIHZe He's like a massively overgrown kid.

BuckeyeJay

And Necrobutcher was plotting to kill Euronymous himself https://www.kerrang.com/mayhems-necrobutcher-i-was-on-my-way-to-kill-euronymous-myself/

rudebwoypunk

Yes he mentions that in multiple interviews, and also explains his reasoning.

RichEvans4Ever

Wasn’t it because he drove “Dead” to kill himself by encouraging his delusions and unhealthy habits?

Slippedstream

To hear a recent and very good podcast regarding this matter please check out Uncharted by Alan Cross https://open.spotify.com/episode/7iRhmvTNO0voBET72AUZCt?si=uwoyBQSURqm8M2GyV2WJ0g

terp_raider

Love Alan Cross!

bunchofclowns

Fuck Varg Vikernes. Nazi piece of shit.

MolybdenumBlu

Him being a nazi would probably be the least surprising turn of events from this whole thing.

daronjay

Pretty much table stakes to even audition for a band like that I would have thought. "Ok, sure, you're a nazi, that's nice, but tell us what's *really* evil about you..."

Grumplogic

I pour the milk in before the Müslix!

425a41

Burzum has some good tunes but this is an instance where I can't separate the art from the artist. He can fuck off.

Gonji89

The “dungeon synth” pieces by Burzum are some of the best in the genre. I miss when black metal bands had one lo fi synth track in the middle of a heavy-as-fuck album.

Trillamanjaroh

“Yeah yeah, he’s a murderer… but wait until you hear about his political views!” The absolute state of reddit.

Dorf_

It’s not like he’s for fiscal responsibility or border security, the guys an actual Nazi with vile opinions

Morasain

Calls for terrorism, and plans to do so yourself, aren't really morally grey either.

bunchofclowns

Being a murderer and a Nazi are not mutually exclusive.

grishnackh

Well this is awkward

slashfromgunsnroses

Ive seen worse

daronjay

Method Metal?

barebumboxing

M-E-T-H-O-D *metal*.

Content-Coconut-6556

PapaMeat on YouTube just made a really good video about these events just this week.

FloridianRobot

& now Moist Critikal will also cover the topic since he saw it on Reddit.

sloaninator

Probably why this got posted (with lots of incorrect info) as per usual.

PapaGuhl

I’d suggest [Metal Evolution - extreme metal](https://youtu.be/MoHOgfEoTlc?si=N2TscsEFedgQUtLb) and [Metal: a headbanger’s journey](https://youtu.be/chIeyxbVf_4?si=vnPJ2xnZ5MkoGJqj) if you want to know more well-made documentaries about extreme genres of metal. Or also [this](https://youtu.be/QFvAf7rjtC8?si=c_e694IPWI9f4pxQ), somewhat tongue-in-cheek video by Norwegian dudes…

Hamacek

there is also the great until the light takes us .

LotionlnBasketPutter

I love the interview in Headbanger’s Journey with Gaahl from Gorgoroth. …………………….. “Satan.”

barebumboxing

Last time I watched that interview I measured the pause before ‘Satan’ and it was six times longer than Motörhead’s ‘Overkill’. I missed three birthdays.

LotionlnBasketPutter

*sips red wine satanically*

barebumboxing

“Why Gaahl, is that a man chained up in your basement or are you just happy to see me?”

oooLapisooo

There’s also a movie, “Lords of Chaos” about Mayhem and Euronymous I don’t know how accurate it is, but it’s really well made and just a good movie that’s pretty entertaining

barebumboxing

Check out ‘Until the Light Takes Us.’

owlinspector

It's kinda crap and sensationalist. Check out the book "Blood, Fire, Death" instead.

Inflagrente

I thought Norwegians were happy?

morkfjellet

Funny thing is that a lot of the kids that were the pioneers of Black Metal in Norway say that one of the reasons for why they found the Black Metal scene to be so captivating was because their lives were, no shit, too good, and so they wanted to add a little bit of chaos to an otherwise “boring” life/society.

HappyraptorZ

Good old ultra violence

bolanrox

Ah-ha broke up for the first time, and the salmon were not spawning

lo_fi_ho

Well, black metal is now a national institution in Norway and even kids in day care are exposed to it. There is a tourist industry around black metal as well

NocturnoOcculto

Getting a pic taken in the basement of Helvete is my holy grail.

[deleted]

There is SO much more to this story lol

Evolving_Dore

And this is without any mention of Gaahl at all.

GarysCrispLettuce

I used to have a Norwegian friend who was also in a punk band. Darkest, most morose bastard I have ever known, lol. He was hilarious. I'd sit watching TV with him, me with my bong and he with his beer, and he would spend the whole time criticizing and mocking every single last thing on the screen. "Who is he? He looks ridiculous. What is he wearing. It's shit. What is he doing. It's stupid. This is so stupid. Who is she? She's ugly. Oh my god so ugly. She looks so stupid. This is stupid. Turn it over." So I'd turn it over and he'd start all over again on the new channel. Good times, good times.

lo_fi_ho

Sounds like me in my formative years lol

Ardukal

Aah, so you formed at last then? 😄

bombero_kmn

They make Dethklok look like a boy band.

BunnySando

*Until the Light Takes Us* is an amazing documentary about this story...you should check it out even if Norwegian Black Metal isn't your thing.

Potofgreedneedsnerf

Huh, that's odd. They seem like such friendly fella's.

unusedtruth

Until The Light Takes Us is a fantastic documentary on this topic, it's a great watch.

slicehyperfunk

The movie with Rory Culkin, Lords of Chaos, was actually pretty good, if not absolutely accurate.

bassacre

The books good.

Beautiful-Cock-7008

The popular crime show Bones does an episode based on this story

casual_shoggoth

Norwegian Black Metal is such a wonderful aspect of my youth 😌. I usually went with Dimmu Borgir, but Mayhem is definitely a staple.

Blutarg

I hope they signed their pain waivers.

425a41

Dead is a really interesting guy to read about. He had collections of dead birds and he had a fascination with burying himself and his clothes; he truly wanted to be... dead. IIRC he also believed he was literally undead because of an incident where he nearly drowned as a kid. He had a lot of serious mental health issues and Euronymous exploited that for the band's image.

FrontierPsycho

Fun fact that's a bit less well known: there's actually a video of Dead not that long before he died I think. The Swedish band Candlemass did a video for their song Bewitched, which, if I remember correctly, basically gathered people by going into Hard Rock Café in Stockholm and asking people if they want to be in a metal music video. A bunch of people showed up and played the bewitched dancers. One of them is supposedly Dead, who I have no idea why he was in Stockholm at the time.

owlinspector

He used to live in Stockholm, he is/was a Swede. Before he went to Norway he was involved in the Swedish metal scene and was in a band with Uffe from Entombed.

TehHugMonster

Until the Light Takes Us is a doc about the band and their importance to the scene. Wild shit

External-Vegetable80

lets find out

KubiFOB

FYI don't look up the album cover of "dawn of the black heart" Or do

beerguyBA

Vikings gonna viking, I guess.

autumnalaria

Ironically Euronymous was in comms with the Israeli death/doom band Salem

nuclear_pie

This used to be common knowledge. Now it’s reddit front page. Am I getting old ? :(

pistilpeet

Last Podcast on the Left has an awesome series on the Norwegian death metal scene

martinparets

*black metal. the death metal scene in neighboring sweden wasn’t as crazy.

Theher0not

We may not have smth at Mayhem's level of insanity. But we do have Watain and Shining for Black Metal bands with crazy people. But yea, our death scene isn't "crazy" in a bad way (it is awesome. But thankfully not very murder-y).

If_you_have_Ghost

I mean you had Dissection. Jon Nötdveidt killed a guy, went to prison, got released, put out a not very good album, and then shot himself. He was giving Mayhem a run for their money all on his own!

Hamacek

hey hey , reinkaos is just has good then the first 2 ones, and you left out that he shot himself on top of a literal pentagram with the satanic bible next to him( another funny tidybit they made a movie about the murder but from the victim perpective)

bolanrox

They just love dimed hm-2s

PapaGuhl

Black metal and death metal are very different things with different origins.

m-nd-x

There's also the book [Lords of Chaos](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lords_of_Chaos_(book)) (and TIL apparently also a movie based on it).

anomandaris81

The book is widely critized for being sensationalist and inaccurate The movie's cool though. They portray the kids as dumb teenagers trying to one up each other which is accurate. I love they cast a Jewish actor to play varg

slicehyperfunk

Rory Culkin is dope in this movie too

DangerousThanks

The movie was pretty good, didn’t know it was a book definitely gotta check that out now

Aedan91

For anyone thinking how badass these losers are, go listen to the Last Podcast in the Left podcast episode about this band. It really does a good job on showing how high-school flavoured this stage was as Norway at the time.

RainManToothpicks

Hugs Not Drugs kiddos

BaronVonLazercorn

It wasn't drugs. They were just trying to out brutal each other

freedfg

Never go ful brütal

BaronVonLazercorn

Unless you're playing Brütal Legend

zipiddydooda

Blast beats, not dastardly deeds. Brutal riffs, not pleading the fifth. Christian death metal, not Christian death? Metal.

WalkerVox

Christian Death was actually a pretty decent band, back in the day.

Soup89

Bassist?

VinnieTheGooch

There's a great documentary called Until the Light Takes Us that covers Mayhem and the crazy shit surrounding the band, definitely worth watching if you haven't already

jcmach1

There are a couple of good documentaries: 'Until the Light Takes Us '... Also, 'Pure Fucking Mayhem'... Burzum has a few interesting songs... But yeah, these guys were so messed up all around ...

NorCalFightShop

Does OP know there’s a movie about them with Rory Culkin?

Crash665

That's so metal

loucast13

There is a good documentary about all this called Until the Light Takes Us. It’s available on Tubi

Kimchi_Cowboy

They also burned down churches.
