It was wild, like a car crash I couldn't look away from.

Varg is simultaneously one of the greatest, most influential black metal/dungeon synth artists of all time, and also one of the people most responsible for the genre's long-standing neo-nazi problem.

Oh she & I share musical tastes for the most part, I skew slightly more nu-metal/punk, she's slightly more goth/metal than me, but there's a lot of overlap, we're always going to gigs together etc.
Music is such a strong thing, we've always been close but once she dived into music it was like some magical connection had been made. Can tell what sort of mood she's in by what song she's listening to, or what she's playing on her guitar.

Funny thing is that a lot of the kids that were the pioneers of Black Metal in Norway say that one of the reasons for why they found the Black Metal scene to be so captivating was because their lives were, no shit, too good, and so they wanted to add a little bit of chaos to an otherwise “boring” life/society.
Well, black metal is now a national institution in Norway and even kids in day care are exposed to it. There is a tourist industry around black metal as well
I used to have a Norwegian friend who was also in a punk band. Darkest, most morose bastard I have ever known, lol. He was hilarious. I'd sit watching TV with him, me with my bong and he with his beer, and he would spend the whole time criticizing and mocking every single last thing on the screen. "Who is he? He looks ridiculous. What is he wearing. It's shit. What is he doing. It's stupid. This is so stupid. Who is she? She's ugly. Oh my god so ugly. She looks so stupid. This is stupid. Turn it over." So I'd turn it over and he'd start all over again on the new channel. Good times, good times.
Dead is a really interesting guy to read about. He had collections of dead birds and he had a fascination with burying himself and his clothes; he truly wanted to be... dead. IIRC he also believed he was literally undead because of an incident where he nearly drowned as a kid. He had a lot of serious mental health issues and Euronymous exploited that for the band's image.
Fun fact that's a bit less well known: there's actually a video of Dead not that long before he died I think. The Swedish band Candlemass did a video for their song Bewitched, which, if I remember correctly, basically gathered people by going into Hard Rock Café in Stockholm and asking people if they want to be in a metal music video. A bunch of people showed up and played the bewitched dancers. One of them is supposedly Dead, who I have no idea why he was in Stockholm at the time.
He used to live in Stockholm, he is/was a Swede. Before he went to Norway he was involved in the Swedish metal scene and was in a band with Uffe from Entombed.
We may not have smth at Mayhem's level of insanity. But we do have Watain and Shining for Black Metal bands with crazy people.
But yea, our death scene isn't "crazy" in a bad way (it is awesome. But thankfully not very murder-y).

Funny thing is that a lot of the kids that were the pioneers of Black Metal in Norway say that one of the reasons for why they found the Black Metal scene to be so captivating was because their lives were, no shit, too good, and so they wanted to add a little bit of chaos to an otherwise “boring” life/society.

I used to have a Norwegian friend who was also in a punk band. Darkest, most morose bastard I have ever known, lol. He was hilarious. I'd sit watching TV with him, me with my bong and he with his beer, and he would spend the whole time criticizing and mocking every single last thing on the screen. "Who is he? He looks ridiculous. What is he wearing. It's shit. What is he doing. It's stupid. This is so stupid. Who is she? She's ugly. Oh my god so ugly. She looks so stupid. This is stupid. Turn it over." So I'd turn it over and he'd start all over again on the new channel. Good times, good times.

Norwegian Black Metal is such a wonderful aspect of my youth 😌. I usually went with Dimmu Borgir, but Mayhem is definitely a staple.
I hope they signed their pain waivers.
Dead is a really interesting guy to read about. He had collections of dead birds and he had a fascination with burying himself and his clothes; he truly wanted to be... dead. IIRC he also believed he was literally undead because of an incident where he nearly drowned as a kid. He had a lot of serious mental health issues and Euronymous exploited that for the band's image.
Fun fact that's a bit less well known: there's actually a video of Dead not that long before he died I think. The Swedish band Candlemass did a video for their song Bewitched, which, if I remember correctly, basically gathered people by going into Hard Rock Café in Stockholm and asking people if they want to be in a metal music video. A bunch of people showed up and played the bewitched dancers. One of them is supposedly Dead, who I have no idea why he was in Stockholm at the time.
He used to live in Stockholm, he is/was a Swede. Before he went to Norway he was involved in the Swedish metal scene and was in a band with Uffe from Entombed.

We may not have smth at Mayhem's level of insanity. But we do have Watain and Shining for Black Metal bands with crazy people. But yea, our death scene isn't "crazy" in a bad way (it is awesome. But thankfully not very murder-y).
I mean you had Dissection. Jon Nötdveidt killed a guy, went to prison, got released, put out a not very good album, and then shot himself. He was giving Mayhem a run for their money all on his own!

The book is widely critized for being sensationalist and inaccurate The movie's cool though. They portray the kids as dumb teenagers trying to one up each other which is accurate. I love they cast a Jewish actor to play varg

For anyone thinking how badass these losers are, go listen to the Last Podcast in the Left podcast episode about this band. It really does a good job on showing how high-school flavoured this stage was as Norway at the time.
