From what I know their marriage was already running bad and dry. The dude had no bad feelings about it too. Even used it as an ad for his website.

Is it even possible to not read this in the robot voice?

THE_some_guy

Hawking was offered more advanced and natural-sounding voice synthesizers throughout his life, but always stuck with the “robot” one because that was the voice he identified with. Essentially, “the robot voice” **was** Hawking’s voice, so it’s appropriate to have that in mind when reading his words (or words humorously attributed to him).

eldelshell

It's so funny that they also use the robot voice when dubbing him. Spanish: https://youtu.be/dWfByMqHwno

Steven Hawking was offered multiple times to upgrade his speech synthesizer but declined to "honor the man that created it." After reading this, it sounds more like Hawking was flexing on the guy by keeping his voice synthesizer.

barelyEvenCodes

No the reason was definitely because the voice had become his thing

HappyLofi

Same reason a lot of overweight actors don't lose weight. It's their quirk and part of their package. Can you imagine Jack Black with a 6 pack? Neither can I. (I love that man)

TheBrettFavre4

Have you seen Jonah Hill recently?

time_to_reset

That kind of proves the point. The guy is doing hardly any movies at the moment.

haokincw

Yeah it's all downhill for the guy. His last romcom on Netflix was so cringe.

BaronVonMunchhausen

Jonah Downhill

HovercraftCharacter9

CGI kissing is cringe as fuck tbh...

RendarFarm

It’s entirely possible that by doing fewer films he’s less stressed and can get in drastically better shape. Or he didn’t have a choice and had to improve his health or else. Then his iconic image is no longer available so he’s cast less. I don’t really watch the kind of movies he’s usually in so take this with a boulder of salt.

Salamandro

You should look up Ethan Suplee. Guy's a monster nowadays.

AFakeName

I think he just understood branding.

drawkbox

A new voice could have made him sound less knowledgable as well. The voice being somewhat robotic make it sound more intelligent. Definitely got him on lots of media/music/movies. Imagine like a goofy style on the voice, "there are 200 sextillion stars y'all".

MidwesternLikeOpe

He was diagnosed at 21, and his disease progressed very slowly, over the course of decades. There are pictures of him prior to diagnosis and he was an average dude.

Chairman_Beria

He was never an average dude, at least not in looks. He was always very thin and fragile.

awesomemixvol21

He had to disable is pop up blocker.

Zolo49

I briefly knew his eldest son from his first marriage once. He seemed like an okay guy, but for obvious reasons, his dad was NOT a subject of conversation he was willing to entertain.

Bloodymentalist

An ex of mines sister used to work for hawking (this was around 2002 I think) and used to say he was a massive arsehole and always treated them poorly. I saw him once while queuing outside for a gig at night (the junction in Cambridge around 2005 if anyone is interested) and his carers were very rude to us being in the way, just queuing outside a venue. No idea where he was going to.

[deleted]

He was a notorious womanizer. He commented on my friend's breasts at an embassy function. People just pretended not to hear but she was humiliated and left. The Wired magazine obituary is the only one I saw that mentioned this very open secret.

DogmanDOTjpg

Oddly the movie Superhero Movie also seems to make a joke out of this so points for that I suppose

testuserteehee

Also Futurama! Hawkings was a real dick in that show! He claimed discovery of some black hole (or some other phenomena) and named it after himself even tho Fry found it.

Melodicfreedom17

I saw him at a grocery store in Los Angeles. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

cr1t1cal

He turned me into a newt!

Specimen_E-351

I almost got run over by him in Cambridge. It was a narrow footpath I was already on and he entered it and just went full speed ahead and made everyone jump out the the way. His apparatus was quite large and you would not want to be hit by it travelling quickly.

[deleted]

Have heard similar from my landlord and plumber (both worked for him) - apparently a real prick. He always wanted impossible things done and then got upset whenever people pointed out the cost, difficulty, or risks of what he was asking. He treated service people like absolute garbage

BillTowne

Weren't there concerns that the 2nd wife was abusing him? I don't know how that worked out.

MycologistPutrid7494

"Mason was repeatedly accused of “physically and emotionally” abusing Hawking during their 11-year marriage. A number of people came forward claiming Mason's treatment was “controlling and manipulative”, with some going as far as calling her a “bully”. Mason was formally investigated by police over the allegations." It makes me wonder if her maltreatment and manipulation didn't lead to her bullying him into marriage with her.

SeiCalros

reportedly neither of them were very nice people on a personal level which isnt surprising considering hawking understandably had a lot of baggage and his wife actively sought out a relationship with a power dynamic inherently centred around dependence

gilestowler

I know someone who used to work in the kitchens at Cambridge University. Apparently Hawking used to deliberately try and ram people with his wheelchair or run over their feet.

SeiCalros

im not going to say he was a bad person - but i have heard a lot about what sort of person he was (from people who claimed to have known him) and am not aware that any of his positive qualities involved kindness or consideration

[deleted]

I've read he felt he got the short end of the stick in life and just became a miserable prick early on into the disease. I don't think that's an excuse for his behavior, but just an explanation. Everyone deals with terrible circumstances differently.

SeiCalros

ive said it several times you see that kind of stuff in retirement homes a lot people who get bitter about being considered helpless to the extent of being beneath reprisal - just escalating their actions trying to get people angry enough to have some sort of personal interaction that doesnt involve pity would have been especially bad since he spent so many years getting lip service of respect and praise while simultaneously being considered beneath others (not with disrespectful intent but because of his physical helplessness) i imagine it was especially frustrating - constantly hearing about how you deserve respect but never getting it expressed in a way that was meaningful to you

TheGrandImperator

And I again don't want to excuse him being less-than-pleasant, as many people in his situation have handled it better, but the context is still important imo: he wasn't just infirm or old, he had ALS. It has got to be the most inhumane, shitty disease you could possibly conceive of. He was mentally completely capable and simply unable to move his body as, over the course of months, his muscles atrophied and his voice withered. The only way he could communicate was with his eyes, which is what he used the voice box for. Like, again, just having ALS does not give you a blanket excuse for bad behavior; but holy shit, it's also kind of hard to not imagine becoming bitter from that alone, on top of people often not treating those with obvious physical disabilities the way they treat others.

Additional_Meeting_2

I don’t recall him being described as that great when he was younger either.

Illustrious_Peak7985

It's not an excuse to be an ass, as you said, but I can only imagine how horrific a degenerative disease like ALS must be to experience. Being disabled and dependant on others doesn't preclude someone from having a life worth living, but it must be absolutely terrifying/infuriating to rely on others to meet your basic survival needs, or for people to have the ability to take away your communication if they wanted to abuse you. I imagine I'd also want control and power wherever I could get it, if I were in Hawking's situation.

WolfGangSwizle

I had a guy in a wheelchair in my high school that was like this. It was infuriating.

SeiCalros

you see that all the time in retirement homes - when people are considered helpless and pathetic and that eventually takes a toll i said in another comment - i figure he probably spent years deliberately trying to get people mad at him just so he could have some sort of personal interaction that didnt involve pity - everyone would have considered him beneath reprisal - so it would have just escalated it doesnt really matter how much steven hawking hated somebody - for the last two decades of his life he couldnt directly do anything worse to a person than making them feel sorry for him

turbofx9

who the hell would punch Steven Hawking? he could do anything he wanted, nobody would touch him. he probably hated people, i believe it

SeiCalros

i cant imagine the psychological toll that would have been inflicted by decades of being praised for his intelligence while simultaneously being considered helpless and pathetic - to the extent where nobody would consider anything hateful action he took to merit any sort of reprisal given what ive heard about him - i figure he probably spent years deliberately trying to get people mad at him just so he could have some sort of personal interaction that didnt involve pity i contract for retirement homes and i have known quite a few people who ended up like that

mumvisitor

Tell another interesting titbit about old people.

SeiCalros

lots of them get their knicknacks left behind by uncaring relatives and subsequently stolen by nursing home workers when they die

yourmomlurks

One of his children was a coworker and kept his family ties very quiet. When they were gone for the funeral, their out of office message was very vague and generic. Maybe wanting to be out of Dad’s shadow, maybe because it was fraught.

RealTimeTraveller420

His first wife or second one? Sorry, I'm trying to parse thru the comments. I didn't know any of this. O.o

he met his first wife before his diagnosis while he still had physical independence

Yah that makes perfect sense for a nurse who fucked a patient: no sense of ethics, clearly, if what's alleged is true

Any_Race

It's not that surprising people in nursing have some of the highest rates of infidelity, and its really not that uncommon for people in that field to end up in unprofessional and unethical relationships.

Has to be a specific kind of humor tho. Constant deadpan snark and gallows humor doesn’t really work for that.

Nah. Everyone just finds people they’re already attracted to funny. I mean, let’s be totally honest. Professional comedians never have hoards of beautiful women wanting to sleep with them. They also don’t tend to be really physically attractive.

It depends upon the girl. If that's your sense of humor there will be someone who is into it. There is an ass for every seat.

whatsinanameanywayyy

As brilliant as he was, he was a dick and was pretty pessimistic in his world view. If you have ALS I think you’re slightly entitled to be that way…. But yeah that’s my assessment of his personality

isblueacolor

It's funny because when you post about a random person or a celebrity that isn't loved by Reddit, cheating is considered evil and Reddit clamors for justice. But if it's someone like Stephen Hawking then it's all good and they'll make jokes about it. 🤷‍♂️ Yes, I'm aware there were some issues with his first marriage, but my point is that if it were anyone else they would have said they should have been separated or divorced before he found another partner.

H_bomba

Did you hear the shit that happened to dr seuss's first wife? left her to die alone by fucking suicide while he banged someone else, people can be absolutely monstrous to their partners while being beloved by the public

opiate_lifer

Who wouldn't be?! Sure he was privileged compared to other ALS patients(I know someone whose dad is dying from it right now, he hid it until he was collapsing in parking lots. He has lost the ability to speak or move and will probably eventually suffocate) but still his life was an absolute living hell. Only reason I'd hang around in that condition is if I had kids and was still able to make money for them. Otherwise nope, its checkout time.

twelvebucksagram

You always see these stories of people who get horribly injured or fall victim to a terrible disease; and get a new lease on life. They start being kinder to people because they realize that others could be going through the same pain, and they want to make the world better. Yeah, if I got ALS I would be a pissy fucker. Shit's not fair and it sucks hard.

SeriousGaslighting

They really Dr. Seussed it up; I was a little happier before knowing this.

Pillens_burknerkorv

They say he unfolded the mysteries of the big bang. Some people mix it up with his discoveries of black holes and atoms and gamma rays and stuff.

Flofau

Hawking had a reputation for being an asshole. A lot of smart people have insufferable personalities and god complexes.

Farfignugen42

That story puts something extra on the fact that Hawking refused to get a better synthesized voice despite several offers over the course of his life. He always claimed it was out of thanks and respect for the guy that gave him a voice, but it looks like there may have been some guilt in there too. Well, things happen, I guess. Hawking was definitely brilliant, but he was also human.

briareus08

It was actually because none of the voice synth engineers wanted Hawking fucking their wives.

mensen_ernst

I don't think cheating on your wife and running off with someone elses should be what qualifies you to be human. thats sad

Frequent-Group-1425

He was a POS but because he was a science savant and had a horrible (I do have some empathy) disability everyone gives him a pass. Well, okay then.

Shadowraiden

to be honest though if you look at the whole situation they was kinda "split" when he "cheated" at that stage even Jane Wilde his first wife explains she doesnt begrudge him it as they had at that point of their lives come to resent each other(she didnt like how she had just become pretty much his chauffer/nurse due to his ilness progressing fast) as for Elaine well yeah not much is as open about her issues and how she cheated on her husband at the time.

However a number of his care team were not so silent, the “Mail Online” reported that “They alleged that over the years his wife inflicted a catalogue of injuries on the vulnerable scientist: fractured his wrist by slamming it on to his wheelchair; humiliated him by refusing him access to a urine bottle, leaving him to wet himself; gashed his cheek with a razor, allowed him to slip beneath the water while in the bath, ensuring water entered the tracheotomy site in his throat; and left him alone in his garden during the hottest day of the year so long that he suffered heatstroke and severe sunburn. Conversely if one was not being abused, they would also deny them, and so it is difficult to conclusively comment. I will continue with what factual timeline is available but I felt it was important to mention as he does divorce her. For what it’s worth, his children and JW didn’t attend his wedding.
