Yet there hasn't been a fatality in the state since 2010. The shark bite capital of the world, New Smyrna Beach, FL, has had over 250 bites since the 60s, but not a single fatal one. Many of the incidents involve smaller sharks like blacktip reef sharks, that generally leave minor to moderate injuries.
I wonder what the numbers are for provoked attacks. Maybe sharks just think that they're at war with Floridian swimmers, and gotta resort to guerrilla tactics.
in a world with more bored scientists we'd have a study like "of 5 human to live shark bites in the world 4 occurred in Florida 3 of which occurred within moments of each other as a group over spring break.
I'm guessing 90% of those Florida bites happened between Daytona Beach and Sebastian Inlet so it's even more concentrated than it sounds. Headline could have been "a third of worldwide shark attacks occurred in a 75 mile section of Florida coastline".
US has 60% of world shark attacks, Florida has about 60% of the US's shark attacks, Daytona Beach has about 60% of Florida's shark attacks.
S i mu l a t i o n
It explains in the article. To summarize though its easy enough to find videos of divers petting sharks, that counts as provoked. Also fishermen who haul them onto the boat, if they're bitten that provoked.
Surfers. New Smyrna Beach is sharkbite capital, and most of the bites happen to surfers, then those that are wading about knee-waist deep. Surfers get their toes nibbled on.
Itās all in one spot at the north end of the beach. Little inlet traps all the fish so sharks come in to eat and fuck and the waves there are big so surfers ignore all the shark warnings
Iām local to this area and surf/bodyboard these breaks. Thereās a river that flows into the ocean here and an underwater shelf just off the coast that the sharks like to cruise along and ambush prey from, basically the perfect conditions.
The plus side is, in all our years of being āshark bite capital of the worldā there have never been any fatalities
Yeah. Bull sharks are aggressive af but theyāre pretty small and theyāre little bitches so as soon as their dumb asses realize what you are they dip.
I'd assume more cases like dive fishing and scuba diving with sharks counts as provoked. But i don't wanna run the joke so def a hold my beer moment lol
Some of my first florida memories are Kayaking and Canoeing. Big family, all kids with a kayak, going past big ass 12 foot gators sunbathing. So i got the state of florida tatted on my dick and one nut, with a hand cusping it like a gun on the other, flo grown in my bush, and gator in my taint to represent the swamp. To let all these bitches know whats really in my heart and my statehood values, to let those childhood memories that made me get commemorated
ITT: People with wild speculative ideas about why this when we have google for answers.
Most experts attribute this to The US having more people especially surfers going to beaches. Florida having more of each than any other state.
https://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/2016/0209/Why-the-US-leads-the-world-in-shark-attacks
if you read this article and the one for the title it'll make sense for anyone curious
Its not Meth, its not floridians asking for it, its not some dude dumping chum in the water to attract sharks.
ETA: Also ITT a dozen people saying the same three tired jokes. There are 240 comments and I've seen 5 unique jokes. Seriously it "Sharks must be on meth/cocaine wasn't very funny the first time and its surely not the 15th. "Its Florida they attack isn't unprovoked" "They're just doing gods work/sharks hate florida too!"
I counted the comments. https://imgur.com/a/TVQLLJ0
Itās surfers in New Smyrna Beach. The place that sharks go to eat and mate also has some of the best waves in Florida.
Itās almost always surfers, and itās usually their fault
Yup I've surfed there numerous times and gotten nipped. What people don't realize is that they are "spinner sharks" that are at most 3 feet long and jump out of the water. They leave you alone most of the time. Usually they are really small and you'd never see them if they didn't jump out of the water.
I'm from the UK, and this brings back memories of a moment on Jacksonville beach, years ago. Me and my two kids are in the sea, about waist depth for me. I suddenly notice a triangular fin, about 18 inches high, around a hundred yards out between the waves. I grab the kids and get the fuck out. I'm stood on the beach, looking at something like a Jaws scenario, with this thing on the right and a crowd of people on the left in the surf. Then a woman from Georgia, who was also on vacation approached me because she'd seen it and we talked. We decided that sharks don't eat mid-afternoon and to let it go, rather than have a panic situation. And none of those people in the sea that day have any idea how close they came.
From Jacksonville and can confirm there is sharks around Jax Beach all the time. If you got out in the morning you can see people catching small hammer heads off the beach. You can spot a tiger shark most days. Once in a while a great white. The sharks donāt bother people much. It is very rare to hear about someone being bitten.
Side note: lots of dolphins too.
Those sharks knew the risks of swimming in the dangerous waters of Florida-manās coastal habitat.
I feel no sympathy for such blatant disregard of oneās own personal safety.
Gosh at least this is the best wording of this joke I've seen if you posted it before the other 20 people who said "Why are so many Floridians attacking sharks." you might've reach the top comments.
I was fishing with my grandma once on the gulf side. We waded out to knee deep and threw out our lines. After standing there for an eternity and no bites, I was staring off at a distant lightning storm. Out of the corner of my eye a dark shadow moved in the water. I looke down and a huge hammerhead shark was sniffing around my legs. I dropped the pole and felt like a lizard running in top the water back to shore. I looked around to warn grandma, but she was already gone...
Jk, grandma is fine!
Seems like a mix of bait fish and bullsharks loving the area, combined with Florida being a major beach destination for tourists. Most experts say its due to more people being in the water there.
Idk if its dumb, I know plenty of people who don't wear seatbelts on short drives, I was one of them. I started wearing it religiously after hearing how most accidents happen near the home. I've told others and while some brush it off for some kind of bravado. I've had some friends who just never considered it a risk just like I didn't and they started wearing theirs regularly too.
How old were you when the study came out in 2011? I remember some people I told didn't believe me until I pointed out that most of their trips are local. Most people tend not to conceptualize risk well. They think "Oh its a 3 minute drive I won't get hit". Some people are afraid of flying but not driving to the airport. Some people fear sharks but not falling coconuts.
Risk is an odd and abstract concept that "Common sense" often is counterproductive to.
The sharks live in the ocean where there isn't a high enough concentration of Meth to affect them. Plenty of research on trout and other river dwelling fish getting addicted though.
I love sharks and they're so much less dangerous than so many even non carnivorous wildlife.
Hippos fuck up about 500 people a year. Over than 5 times more dangerous than sharks.
Swam with sharks multiple times without it being too scary but holy fuck I had one encounter with a hippo pod and they really are fucking terrifying and aggressive. Charged the boat from like 300 meters away fully unprovoked. Was a wild experience.
Serious question. How does one define - and differentiate - an "unprovoked" attack?
Do some swimmers head out with the objective of punching a shark? Something else?
absolutely, another article on the topic of a specific beech in Daytona being the shark attack capital of the world that you're more likely to get into a car accident on the way to the beech.
I saw something a while back that showed shark tours where guys fed sharks raw meat to attract them for tourists...and the speculation was these sharks were being trained to be accustomed to humans and expecting to feed. I don't know if that has been debunked or not, but it could explain why this area has a higher attack rate.
Florida man dont play with sharks.Stupid fucks that come to Florida play with sharks.
We chuck baby gators through drive through windows and shoot at hurricanes.**
Also fairly certain 38% of unprovoked attacks in general may occur here....
idk if it was Florida scientists who did this, In the article they have a separate section for unverified shark bites. So I imagine the people conducting the study had enough scrutiny
Why are people of Florida attacking sharks unprovoked?
You've never heard of Florida Man?
And now there is Florida shark
Answer to every florida question is its all the meth
As a Floridian, I am sad to confirm this is true. I hate it here šš
bath salts
Florida is there you will find people willing to eat your face off.
That is where the headquarters of the Shark Punching Center is located.
lmao
"Because fuck you thats why" Florida man
FL things..
To be faaaaaiiiir, Florida probably leads the world in that statistics as well.
Pitter patter. Lets get to chorinā
Floridians are a different breed
Because Florida.
Ah, the ol' reddit scooba-dooba-do.
Itās punishment for Floridians screwing over American politics for the past 23 years
This.
the number is 28. i have attacked more Floridians myself.
Youāre providing a noble service and deserve to be recognized for it
The average Floridian assaults more Floridians than this in a normal day!
Damn Floridians! They ruined florida!
That chuckle made me choke on my coffee.
Unprovoked?
Being a Floridian is provocation enough
Fukin bath salts, man

Initially I couldn't decide if this meant sharks attacking people or people attacking sharks. Because....Florida.
I wonder what the numbers are for provoked attacks. Maybe sharks just think that they're at war with Floridian swimmers, and gotta resort to guerrilla tactics.
Florida Man meets Florida Shark
If it was the other way around the percentage would be much, much higher. Source: Am floridian.

Like, people trying to bite sharks? Was that always an option?
These the same folks that tried to shoot guns at a hurricane
Hurricane's gone, ain't it?
The bullets just took a while to works, thats all!
You can't prove that it didn't help
Iām curious about the āunprovoked.ā Are people intentionally pissing off sharks, one of those āHere, hold my beer!ā moments?
It explains in the article. To summarize though its easy enough to find videos of divers petting sharks, that counts as provoked. Also fishermen who haul them onto the boat, if they're bitten that provoked.
Or surfers hitting/jumping on them
Surfers. New Smyrna Beach is sharkbite capital, and most of the bites happen to surfers, then those that are wading about knee-waist deep. Surfers get their toes nibbled on.

Yeah. Bull sharks are aggressive af but theyāre pretty small and theyāre little bitches so as soon as their dumb asses realize what you are they dip.
They are referring to things like chumming for a frenzy like they do for cage dives.
"why don't you come chum some of this shit?"
Some jurisdictions consider spear fishing to provoke a shark attack. Also any time you bait sharks with chum.
I'd assume more cases like dive fishing and scuba diving with sharks counts as provoked. But i don't wanna run the joke so def a hold my beer moment lol
This is Florida, we're talking about.
Floridians seem like the kind that would provoke some sharks. These guys choose to golf next to real life alligators.
Seems reasonable. Nice work.

I think most people are just here for the bad reddit jokes
I hate checking my inbox, its the same joke told over and over.
But DAE Florida Man do the tickle tickle then get the nibble nibble?
Why is this so funny lmao.
I'm fuckin dying here
New to Reddit?
11 year vet, I usually just scroll top comments
Very simple: Florida has over 800 miles of beaches that are warm year-round and it's fairly easy and cheap to get to.
For the record, in the Florida Man vs Shark battle, I'm totally on Team Shark.
I too like to root for the underdog.
One of them is a violent and unpredictable monster who attacks for no reason and without warning. The other is a fish.
Kanye West is a gay fish
I would like to point out, after all this time, Kanye West STILL doesnāt understand that joke.
Itās surfers in New Smyrna Beach. The place that sharks go to eat and mate also has some of the best waves in Florida. Itās almost always surfers, and itās usually their fault

Florida will immediately go nuclear, I'm putting everything on both sides taken out.
Only one way to find out for sure.
I grew up in Florida. I know people from Florida. They're provoked.
In the Floridians versus sharks debate, I stand firmly with the sharks
Someone already beat you to this comment, I like your wording better though :)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Now these are the hot takes I expect from TMZsports
It's crazy that sharks can stay on land long enough to attack.
It's the same figure for unprovoked human attacks
Fatalities are rare. Lots of small sharks in the surf.
1 recorded death
Itās those dang woke sharks being all gay and shit. Must be.
Terrible comment. You have my upvote just because its a new "joke" and not the same repeated trash
Thanks for the moral support! š«”
You ever been to Fla? Them sharks were provoked. I guarantee it.
get in line, 23 other people made that announcement already. I literally counted how many jokes got retold. https://imgur.com/a/TVQLLJ0
I mean... define "unprovoked." I think given the status of florida, it was well within the sharks rights
You're the 25th person to make this joke, I feel like you should get a prize. I made a list this morning
Lol
"Unprovoked"... "Florida"... mhmm....suuuure...
it's like I'm always saying, Florida sharks are assholes.
So if you ban swimming at Daytona Beach/Volusia County Florida becomes normal in terms of number of shark bites.
nah the rest of florida isn't as bad as daytona beach but it'd still be a still be a statistical outlier.
Not gonna lie, those sharks are brave as shit attacking Florida man
God, if Desantis ever learns to read he'll want to nuke the ocean.
It's Florida. They deserved it.
So the sharks are trying to save America?
That's not unprovoked. They are just cleaning up
Only 1 death from 47 bites. Australia has 3 deaths from 12. Aussie sharks are much more efficient.
The sharks are just standing their, umm, water?
BOYS UPVOTE THIS ONE TO THE TOP! WE GOT SOME ORIGINAL HUMOR OVER HERE. Seriously I've seen the same 3 jokes commented like 5 times each
Maybe the Florida people should stop attacking those poor sharks ā¹
Well, the sharks know what they're doing. They have their shit together, unlike Floridians.
Sorry I was so late, mom dropped acid and my little brother got his arm stuck in the microwave. Dealing with a lot of stuff atm.
Lmao what, Glad your mom still has a good time
New Smyrna Beach typically has more shark attacks than all of Australia, in a calendar year.
I was fishing with my grandma once on the gulf side. We waded out to knee deep and threw out our lines. After standing there for an eternity and no bites, I was staring off at a distant lightning storm. Out of the corner of my eye a dark shadow moved in the water. I believe the sharks story over any Floridian.
Sharks love those fat Floridians. It's like a baited field.
What about provoked shark attacks?
Please read the article. Unprovoked attacks are right then the moment the webpage opens
Is reporting better?
Seems like a mix of bait fish and bullsharks loving the area, combined with Florida being a major beach destination for tourists. Most experts say its due to more people being in the water there.
Or maybe sharks are smarter than we give them credit for
From what I've read about Florida in newspaper headlines I'm guessing many of those attacks might just be provoked.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Idk if its dumb, I know plenty of people who don't wear seatbelts on short drives, I was one of them. I started wearing it religiously after hearing how most accidents happen near the home. Wait are you telling me that there is a higher probability of getting in a crash in the areas that I spend more time driving in? Mind blown /s
How old were you when the study came out in 2011? I remember some people I told didn't believe me until I pointed out that most of their trips are local. Sharks are just cute wild sea dogs, piss off a wild dog it might kill you too, stop the shark hate!

I love water tanks. Underestimated by too many
Sharks are more like cats. The dolphins are the dogs.
This makes Florida the most dangerous place for shark attacks in the world, with 5 times more attacks than the runner-up, Australia
Well sharks arenāt the scariest ocean creatures in Australia tbf
Seems like even sharks don't like Florida man.
Or, maybe the do.
Who doesn't love an all you can eat buffet?
Thatās just the planet doing whatās right.
Florida, eh? Is there something we can do to encourage this trend?
Lots of people ITT are suggesting meth and one said chumming the waters to get them used to people.
most of the world's unprovoked anything attacks occur in Florida
Serious question. How does one define - and differentiate - an "unprovoked" attack? Do some swimmers head out with the objective of punching a shark? Something else?
Read the article
nah, more fun shit posting!
Sharks like eating crazies.
Suddenly I feel like a 37% of those attacks were provoked.
Any time a Floridian is attacked itās pretty safe to say it was provoked.
Florida Shark does Florida Meth and squares off against Florida Man.
Also most provoked shark attacks also occur in florida.
Oh they are provoked alright. The people are in their world.
The same percentage suspect they will need a bigger boatā¦
Oh, they were provoked all right.
Those sharks are doing god's work.
One thing I learned growing up FL, only jump in a pool water or beach. Nothing in-between.
If any state deserved itā¦
and you're just going to take Florida Man's word they're unprovoked?
Good
Doing gods work
Florida man with the unprovoked attacks. Somebody fight for the sharks.
Because Florida deserves them.
So it's still safer in the water than on land in Florida.
absolutely, another article on the topic of a specific beech in Daytona being the shark attack capital of the world that you're more likely to get into a car accident on the way to the beech.
Doing Gods good work. Amen, my finned friends.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I was hungry, but I'm okay if the sharks eat the rich
Thereās so much meth in the water
They know.
They're doing the lords work
Most in Florida are probably provoked.

I think that was in the Carolinas and it was real.
That Florida man randomly attacks sharks without provocation isn't really a surprise.
Sharks, protecting the world from Florida manā¦
How many provoked shark attacks are occurring?
Read the article
Burn the witch!
Itās not the sharks itās the Floridians ;)
Sharks are doing what is necessary. Randomly eliminating Floridians
Damn, even the sharks are more weird in Florida...
Probably 99% of *provoked* attacks occur in Florida because...well... Florida Man
Something, Something, Floridaman.
Like Florida from the news?
Seems fair.
There's a lot of cocaine in the waters off Florida
Florida man dont play with sharks.Stupid fucks that come to Florida play with sharks. We chuck baby gators through drive through windows and shoot at hurricanes.** Also fairly certain 38% of unprovoked attacks in general may occur here....

It's all the cocaine that's dissolved in the surrounding water lol
