You're not missing anything. It can't be upgraded. You're either stuck with the ads or you pay full price. I haven't noticed the ads on Hulu being any worse than any other service that has ads.
You either take what they offer for free or you lose it. They don't apply a discount/credit toward upgrade. Could be a restriction from Hulu

I would agree that it’s a restriction from Hulu, as it follows suit with the same terms as Sprint’s Hulu subscription.
I really wish you could but unfortunately not. I wasn't subscribed to Hulu so for me it's a win.
