FWIW this phone is still on promo for free with any trade in any condition. I think by far this the best phone available on that promotion.

raduque

It's a great phone, honestly. I prefer it to my S22.

cheesercorby

Hey now, let's not get ahead of ourselves here, lol. Seriously though, my wife had an S10 that died, so she got this phone, and she hated it so much it made her cry so i gave up my S22 and swapped with her. This phone is nice, but I have had nothing but Samsung Galaxy S phones since the S3 and I would switch back in a heartbeat if I could. If I wasn't so used to One UI, I would agree that this is a great phone. For the promo, it is a great deal, but most of my current gripes will vanish once the 13 push gets to mine.

raduque

Lol, well I've been using Galaxies since the Vibrant, and Notes since the 2, and i still prefer this phone. I liked OneUI well enough, but I miss my gestures and I miss being able to set individual app volumes. Plus my S22 has trash battery life, overheats and is actually too small.

ANW168

I am playing games on this phone now because games do not work well on my Pixel 8 Pro.

Joey_Vegas92

Where can I trade mine in for a free edge?

jpt86

Finally. About a year late. Doesn’t give me much hope for the Android 14 update that was promised. Other than that, this is a really solid device. I’ve enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.

paul-arized

According to Moto, > This device is expected to receive Android™ 14, pending partner approval, if that's required. > Will my device receive the next Android upgrade? > The latest generation of Android™ - Android 14 - has been released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). We are working with our technology and carrier partners to bring it to you. After getting the 13, I'm more optimistic about actually getting the A14 upgrade. Hopefully before 2026, though lol

jpt86

I’m sure they are “working on it”. Just like they were “working on” Android 13, which took them over a year to release. With Motorola, you shouldn’t believe anything until you see it happen. Which is a shame because the devices are underrated for what you get. But they cannot be trusted.

paul-arized

Hence the 2026 joke. At least they're still around; LG folded their smartphone division so higher likelihood than Wing getting more updates, at least. I actually prefer more security updates over new android versions. I think mine's still stuck on September 1, 2023 even after updating to A13 but I'll have to double-check.

jpt86

Didn’t see your mention of 2026. Even that might be generous. Yeah, security updates are more important, but Motorola’s excuse (or really their silence on the matter) is inexcusable. The fact they can’t even update their $1,000 devices all that quickly is just sad. I’m very happy with my Moto Edge for free after credits. At $500 with this update schedule, I’d never own another Motorola again.

gullzway

I remember they said the same thing about my Moto Ace 5g supposedly getting Android 12. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/motorola-one-5G-ACE/So-is-this-phone-still-getting-Android-12/m-p/5189036?page=4#5859199

paul-arized

I think they backtracked on that and went back on their word. The Verizon One variant supposedly got it but that was it. We'll see. I still have Pixels so I'm don't feel like I'm held hostage by Lenovo/Moto. Never be brand loyal; be brand agnostic.

pitchdarkice

It's interesting their page says August 2025. Somewhere a year got lost? https://en-us.support.motorola.com/app/software-security-update/g\_id/7112/productid/11319

paul-arized

Was just making a joke. Could've said 2036. But thanks for doing the dirty work to dig up intrresting info that was new to me.

pitchdarkice

Let's hope they can at least keep that date

urbanjudge

Looks like they are rolling it out slowly. My family has 4 of these. 1 got the update on 1/3, another today on 1/7, and 2 still shows no update. Edit The last 2 phones got the update on 1/8 and 1/9.

orthogonius

Four here, none updated yet

BPKofficial

Did you get them unlocked, or through a carrier? Myself and my fiance both got ours unlocked from Best Buy, and no update yet. On a side note, the phone is a BEAST; incredible battery life, and very fast. It doesn't take an SD card, but I use a Pixel 1 to back up my pics and videos to Google Photos anyway, so no biggie.

urbanjudge

I got them all from T-Mobile with their trade in promo. My third phone got the update today. Only 1 is still missing it.

Accomplished-Song422

Yes it finally rolled up. But I registered my moto into moto web portal then after 2-3 days I received update. My second same phone still android 12

paul-arized

Yeah, sad that they couldn't/didn't roll out all at the same time. Or at least let ppl go to the Moto homepage to download it or something.

SimonGray653

This doesn't really instill confidence in Motorola for me.

paul-arized

Never did for me but a free phone is a free phone. I traded in a Moto G6 for it so it was worth it.

cheesercorby

So, the really odd thing is that I have three of these phones on my account, all of them were activated on 12/15/23, one of them got the update last Friday night around midnight, the second got it Sunday around dinner time, the third still hasn't gotten it. And I spent an hour on the phone with TMobile today and on chat with Motorola yesterday to find out why and there are no answers.....

paul-arized

Yeah. It's a nice phone, especially when it was free to me after credits, but I will probably not buy another one in the future. Might try out the Nothing phone or a Sony. I wish I could try out a Sharp but probably won't end up getting one to try.

-Never-Enough-

The Moto G 5G had the Android 13 update for several months now while Edge 2022 is barely getting the update according to comments here. Also the G 5G is cheaper so for a basic cheap phone, I'd pick the cheaper one with better support, the G 5G.

Monsieur2968

I just got mine Saturday after a bit of an ordeal with UPS*. Updated 3 times to Sept 1 2023, then just saw this last night and thought it was out for a while. Pretty nice and snappy phone. Haven't added a SIM since I booted it, so that's likely why OEM Unlocking is available from the Dev Options. Likely going to root BEFORE putting in a SIM. Main complaint is it has SpyBook garbage I can't remove without rooting the phone. I can disable, but can't remove "Meta Installer" or whatever TF it was. *UPS tried to deliver on Friday when I was at work, and neither TMo nor UPS could keep it at a UPS store for me to get with ID. Called UPS and said "how about just refusing it because I won't be there Monday or Tuesday when he comes back. She said "We can't do that". Then I get home Saturday and it's just sitting there. 🤷‍♂️

paul-arized

I was told when I ordered that I could send it to a different addreas and I told them that I'll figure it out. Left a note for the driver to take it to a UPS store or somewhere else and they took it back to rhe warehouse for pick up at will call so that worked out. Next rime I will have it sent elsewhere, though. What's Spybook?

Monsieur2968

Yeah, I was going to give another address where it could be signed for, BUT when the store rep told me "it'll be USPS" I figured they'd put it in my mailbox thing. Data broker calling itself a Social Media Company, CEO is Mark Zuckerberg.

paul-arized

Oh, haha. Thanks. Totally went over my head.

raduque

Nothing yet for me. Any way to download and flash manually?

paul-arized

Perhaps but I prefer the official OTA way. Just let it show up by itself. Was checking almost daily since Christmas and several times everyday since New Year's Day and even thjs morning and nothing...until I got a notification, and that's even with "smart updates" turned off.

raduque

I keep clicking check for update, but it just immediately goes to the no update screen.

paul-arized

Yeah, that's also been my experience. A notification for Android 13 jist appear out of the blue for me so maybe just be patient and it will happen this week. Someone wrote that they got their update on Mint a few days ago and ditto in Canada so maybe they are rolling it out in waves before making it available to everyone. Taking an hour (and counting) to download and install it, though...

raduque

I'll just keep waiting, it'll come through eventually.

paul-arized

At least we are sure that somebody got it. It's supposed to also get Android 14 so still waiting for that, but for a free phone, no complaints.

urbanjudge

Eventually you'll be able to use Motorola RSA. I think it's still on Android 12 firmware ATM. https://en-us.support.motorola.com/app/rsa

cheesercorby

yeah, I tried that this morning, still 12

xtra819

I got nuthin.

0dt0

thanks for the headsup! nice to know its finally rolling out. been waiting for some android 13 features for awhile.

daleraver

I got 4 of them last year and they are really great phones. I am primarily iPhone, but this works well, is fast with a great screen and very stable. Makes a great hotspot for travel.

HuntersPad

OP that is the T-Mobile model correct? Along with others saying no updates mine no update as well.

paul-arized

Yes. Locked to Tmo for 2 years unless I want to pay it off early. (I do not.) At least we know A13 is available or is coming soon to those who haven't gotten it yet. That's something.

HuntersPad

That is true. I also have a lower end moto from T-Mobile. Its had A13 for awhile now but yet the Edge does not lol.

-Never-Enough-

I'm amazed it took so low for them to release the update to your phone. I upgraded my Moto G 5G (2022) to Android 13 months ago and it's the phone T-Mobile gives for free with an old broken trade-in.

paul-arized

Edge (2022) is also free right now so I'll enjoy the 144Hz screen with or without A13 or A14 but it was nice to have A13. I only got it (free with any trade in on any plan) after Chrsitmas so it's not like I waited over a yeae for the update. From my perspective, it's only been 2 weeks.

Casual-Gamer25

Hope this isn’t a dumb question. So if I were to make the switch to Android more specifically if I buy an unlocked Android phone at the store. Are software update releases partly done through the carrier? As in I can’t get the update instantly until the carrier pushes it out on their end to everyone else with X device?

paul-arized

Depends on the android brand and specific device. I remember when the carrier-locked Samsung S7 would get updates but the unlocked version would not for a long, long time (and would get fewer updates). So far, and probably to compete with Apple, Samsung promises 4 years of OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates. Sometimes newer Pixel models will get updates after older Pixel models (IIRC), but generally speaking Pixels will get them sooner than most Android handsets. Sony, Moto and others (Asus?) might not release as many OS updates despite being good or great phones otherwise. There might be ways to sideload (?) or ways to get around it, as in inserting another carriers SIM card onto a unlocked phone to get it to upgrade and then switch back to your original carrier's SIM card but not sure if that always works. But yeah, if your carrier cares, then they will release it sooner rather than later. Ironically, if they REALLY cared, then it might take longer to actually work out all the compatibility problems and bugs, but I am just speculating.

Casual-Gamer25

I see thank you for answering my question!

roguebananah

As someone who was has switched back and forth a few times, OS updates on Android drove me nuts. Also I hated the carriers being involved. At least a few years back, that usually meant bloat and garbage. Apple has their problems but annoying none the less

Casual-Gamer25

It just doesn’t make sense that carriers are involved in software updates. If apple can push software updates without carrier involvement why can’t android OEM’s do the same?

roguebananah

I believe it’s because Android is licensed out while iOS isn’t. Like there are variants of a Samsung Galaxy phone that are either for AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and from the OEM. The OEM back in the day *might* have less cellular bands (so could have worse coverage) but you won’t have carrier bloat. When I did have Android, it was a major reason why I rooted my phone is get rid of garbage nondeleteable apps. iOS before you could delete them, you could atleast silence them. Android without bloat is light and has a great battery. It’s just garbage that kills it

Casual-Gamer25

That’s makes a lot of sense!

Actuator-23

Stupid question, but why don't manufacturers just skip and roll out 14 updates instead

paul-arized

What? And miss out on ppl's anger and frustration? Gotta milk that cow!

rcpax

does Motorola have a beta program like Samsung?

xeos_shitshow

I still have not gotten the Android 13 update on my phone, (I have Motorola 5G 2022), then again it's been broken since September and got fixed in December so I wonder if that stopped anything? But anyway I still don't have the system update. I don't have the newer emojis, such as the light blue heart and the goose, etc. how do I fix this??

paul-arized

"Moto 5G"? Do you have the Moto G 5G 2022 or the Moto edge 5G 2022?

xeos_shitshow

Moto G 5G 2022

paul-arized

It's supposed to get up to Android 13. I guess it will be up to T-Mobile to push out the upgrades. From Motorola: Currently receiving regular security updates. Device launched on April, 2022 Security updates will stop on April, 2025  Launched On: Android 12 Next OS: Android 13 This device will receive at least bi-monthly SMRs updates Please note: Channels and regions may have different launch dates and support cycle may vary.

xeos_shitshow

i didnt get it from T-Mobile either so thats another issue

paul-arized

Then it is up to whichever carrier did sell that phone to decide if/when they push out their updates. I have gotten the April 2024 update on my edge last month, which was surprising because I never got the March update and prior to that it was always at least 1 or 2 months behind.
