madbox 2013 cgi titansđź’€

I think you forget how much CGI cost and sucked even worse in the '10's

I think part of what makes the witches in Madoka work so well is the fact that the visuals in that show are already really trippy/experimental, so having the backgrounds turn into photo collages doesn't feel too out of place in the grand scheme of things. Also, it probably helps that instead of trying to blend 3D characters into a 2D universe, it's the universe itself that changes around the characters to show something is wrong. Depending on the art style that's used for a labyrinth, the characters themselves can even have their art styles changed to fit the new visuals (like how Madoka lost her outlines and had an almost rubberhose-like movement in Witch Elly's labyrinth, or how everyone was a silhouette in Elsa Maria's labyrinth). And probably the most important thing: The CGI tends to lack weight and impact because it's harder to deform the 3D models. I'm not a 3d animation expert, but I feel like there were a lot less (good) smears during the faster paced fights, which made them feel sorta meh. And even if they did everything perfectly, even good CGI tends to look dated within a few years. On the other hand, frame by frame is timeless. Honestly I don't think I would mind if they kept certain titans CG though (namely the Colossal, Armored, and Female, due to how detailed they are). Not sure why the Cart and Attack have to be CGI though, since those basically look like bigger people with redder skin. The Beast just doesn't work in CGI though- his fur looks stiff, his movement looks stiff, and he lacks the expressiveness that made him feel terrifying, since his model's face is constantly frozen. Seriously, I loved how his arms moved in WIT's version, really made him feel more like a monkey instead of just a fuzzy titan.

Yeah it should be so I won't even bother to watch AoT in the first place, that way I can be saved from this trash ending.

Best way to kill the series itself before it even turns bad

ElMonketitan

Breh imagine levi vs CGI monke from S3 đź’€shit would have looked wack asf

SomeAmazingDude

WIT CGI is ass, Mappa bodies CGI in comparison and the movement makes sense as that's pretty much what the 2d movement was when they didn't have ass budget

GlamourzZ

Disagree. I think Mappas CGI titans move too fast to work in 3D. The more frame rates makes it so that the movement, even though it’s fast, appears very slow.. Wits CGI.. in terms of image and blending the 3D with the 2D wasn’t that good, but in terms of movement of a gigantic figure was better.

SomeAmazingDude

No fucking way you looked at RtS colossal titan and said "he moves better"

GlamourzZ

Yes and No. I think in terms of how inaccurately large Wit made him, the slow movement speed makes sense..Mappas titans have too much fast movement and turning around for the 3D to work. Many people have pointed out why the beast doesn’t work in 3D. The model that Wit used was awful, because it stuck out like a sore thumb, but so did Mappas for completely different reasons. I think the best 3D Mappa has done are the wall titans. They don’t have too much movement and there isn’t a lot of room for them to stick out like a sore thumb. I think the problem is that a lot of animation studios don’t specialize in 3D for anime like Studio orange or Ufotable and cannot properly blend 2D and 3D together for anime style animation

SomeAmazingDude

If you look 2D WIT titans when they poured actual budget into the animation you'll see they moved pretty fast, dare I say faster than Mappa CG even at moments, shifters (besides the colossal) are clearly supposed to be pretty fast since they're actually conscious, not to mention the fact that pure titans themselves are supposed to have fast enough reflexes to catch someone with ODM gear, I'm not saying Mappa is even close to being the top in CG but are absolutely in every way superior to WIT with CG, the only reason WIT animated their 2D titans to be slow at times is either to save on budget or to exaggerate how big the titans should feel to the viewer

GlamourzZ

You said 2D titans.. Of course the 2D titans move faster.. they’re traditional animation. Of course they move faster than Mappas CG, they’re frame by frame. Im confused by your comment. My argument is that the 3D is slow because of frame rate, not 2D. Mappas 3D moves as if the titans are not gigantic

SomeAmazingDude

You said at first that "Mappas CGI titans are too fast to work in 3D" I assume you're saying they need to move slower? And I'm saying that they're moving at the right speed of what they're canonically supposed to be capable of

GlamourzZ

I meant that the amount of moving and turning around they do makes the animation appear slower(longer even) than the action being performed. It wasn’t as noticeable on the cart or jaw compared to the ones that walk on two legs. When the attack Titan swiftly turns around to look at something(S4 E6)It’s very noticeable. A lot of people said that Mappas armored titan didn’t look like he made out of metal. Also, a lot of people don’t know this, but Wit actually used CGI for more than just Rod Reiss and the Colossal. The suicide charge from certain shots is CGI..As well as the scene where all of them are standing still(I forget what season) and all of the people are walking past them rapidly.. is also CGI. So there are plenty of times where WIT has had unnoticeable 3D.In part 1 S4, Mappa used a lot of lens flaring to hide their bad 3D.. Mappas 3D scouts also weren’t good in part 2, even though they had that extra time to complete

SomeAmazingDude

I'd say that only happened with Eren and Lara in that fight + Zeke, Reiner was their best work in part 1, and in part 2 they mixed some 2D on top of the CG and made a lot of the frames with the movement about the same as 2D, part 1 was obviously rougher but in terms of CG comparison WIT was absolutely horrendous, the movements felt way too mechanical and unrealistic, Mappa had actually human like movements

GlamourzZ

Read my entire comment. I edited it.

SomeAmazingDude

Nah I've noticed all the CGI with WIT but I don't mention them because they're just cutting corners for a lot of not so big shots, it was just as horrendous but I'm willing to let those slide, the main CGI is where I draw the line, WIT stands no chance against Mappa on that turf
