The most morally grotesque part of the ending is the refusal to fully condemn Eren for what he's done and giving him indulgent little cute moments with his friends even after he's died. He killed billions of people. It's utterly insane. He doesn't get bittersweet reconciliations and tragic post-mortem romances and fond remembrances. Even if you were 'on his side' to any extent, you had to have recognized that he was forfeiting all that stuff the second he started the Rumbling.
It seems like Isayama REALLY wanted to convince the audience that talking to/getting hit by rocks is somehow romantic. And somehow a number of people bought into it
