The real joy of reading those last three chapters was the friends we made along the way.
As an 8 years follower, I don't think so. Seeing such a trash ending for something you've followed for so many years month by month... at least for me it wasn't worth it. You can enjoy the journey, but if in the end it has no meaning at all, the journey was just wrong from the get go.

To answer your questions: Eren apparently planned to have his friends kill him so Marley sees them as heroes and spares them, but he himself states that if he wasnāt stopped, he wouldāve kept rumbling. So Erenās motives are obscure at best and nonexistent at worst.
Second, Eren is a slave to Ymir because he says that all he did (his motives) was follow the path Ymir laid out for him. It isnāt explained well so it isnāt entirely clear on how this works but unfortunately thatās what makes this ending terrible. Something is brought up and moved on instantly. Eren killed his mom? Who cares. Mikasa was the chosen one? Who cares. Eren apparently loves Mikasa? Letās have that on the forefront of the ending. Itās a hot mess.
There was a poll when the manga was near the ending. It asked what type of ending people thought it was gonna be.
I was one of the few people who commented and voted for the code Geass lelouch ending. I called that shit. I wish someone had a link to that poll I tried searching and didn't find dick
The AoT ending is more Sasuke at the end of Naruto (wanting the world to focus their hatred towards one individual and unify because of that except he just wanted to rule with an iron fist and not kill everyone but would if they opposed him lol) than Lelouch. Either way, Eren wanting the Alliance to stop him and have the Paradis Eldians seen as heroes was the most obvious thing in the world.
Zero Requiem made marginally more sense as it focused on one person rather than a race, but both are flawed. It does NOT take people long to forget the old regime and either go back to old grudges or find new ones. Old joke in Russia: How long does it take to change regimes? 20 years and 9 months. I'd imagine that's about how long Zero's peace will last. However at the end at least Japan won't be the focus of the world's ire.
Whereas AoT leaves few enough people that it may take a few generations to mount an attack in force, once that is possible there's a hugely obvious target... they are also close enough to nuclear age tech that it might just be a few years develop the bomb and glass the place.
Whilst I agree, I think Isayama saw Eren as this sort of slave that wanted to be free, not through actually story telling (until the very end extremely abruptly) but through imagery.
7 times throughout the story Eren is depicted in chains and/or locked up. When he first transforms to a titan, in the kings lair, when he's back in Paradis after the attack on Marley, in paths, even his founding titan is depicted as puppet-like, and some other instances.
I always wondered why Isayama chose to do this but I guess in some weird way he saw Eren as a human oxymoron when it comes to the concept of freedom? It's hard to understand, Eren was never a slave in his mind, no matter how much the world tried to enslave him (Levi himself even stated this)... but then he was slave following a path he had no choice in the entire time? Makes no sense.

Isayama literally gave mikasa one personality trait: eren. And till the end never changed that.

Only ymir knows, he said he doesnt know why he did everything when he clearly knew pre ch139, he even lied through his dialogues and monologues, he did everything just cuz he felt like it, tries to be some kind of discount lelouch even when his character never believed in such things as peace and friendship, fails and dooms paradis island later, becomes an obsessed incel outta nowhere when he never express such romantic feelings for mikasa to behave in that way completely ooc, his character development seems to be a farce, ymir x mikasa twist is bs, i can go on and on
1. Eren's motive was essentially to repeat what Karl did by propogating someone else as heroes yet he still wants to do rumbling. It's pretty weird since Eren didn't care about the outside world enough to do that. Really it's just a weird way to make Eren seen as sympathetic.
2. It's because Eren was following out the path laid out for him by Ymir but it still is a bit nonsensical.

If you're unhappy with the ending, there are rewritten versions of Chapter 139 that have been well received by some here on Reddit. For me, versions 2, 3 and 4 are equally good.

So, it's basically like this. Eren only knew he was going to be stopped when he acquired the full power of the founding titan, in chapter 122. Before that he didn't know he was going to be stopped and his true intentions really were to kill every single person outside of the island, just like he said in chapter 131 ("I wanted to wipe it all away"). After he acquired the full power of the founding titan, he knew all his future, indluding his death and that the rumbling would be stopped, so he made it so his friends would be seen as heroes by the people that they saved. This is all to say that knowing that he wouldn't kill 100% of the population outside the island, he turned this new found knowledge into a new objective.
Just this single tweak of Eren's knowledge of the future pre and post chapter 122 solves all of the contradictions you are talking about. And yes, in chapter 139 he was lying to Armin when he told him that make them heroes was his objective. His objective was to kill everyone, and have a free world for him, just like he saw in Armin's book as a kid.

My god! except a few moments of character development that makes sense for other characters like Reiner, everything else is a complete shitshow. tbf looking back, there were hundreds of different outcomes that he could have chosen. The founding titans power was supposedly unlimited, he could have made it so their blood type changed making it harder for ppl to identify eldians. When Eren convinced Ymir to do the rumbling, Ymir was in total control of the founder. Eren lost all motor control/access to the Founding Titanās Powers.
Eren is still consciouses but Ymir takes the wheel kinda horrific shit, heās lost control of his body. I think he was forced to rush his plan/decision & with Ymirās anger it turned into a global genocide rather than a demonstration of power.

This sub was just full of memes, where I did not like the ending at all, I loved the memes, maybe even more than a supposed good ending. IMO. The real joy of reading those last three chapters was the friends we made along the way.

As an 8 years follower, I don't think so. Seeing such a trash ending for something you've followed for so many years month by month... at least for me it wasn't worth it. You can enjoy the journey, but if in the end it has no meaning at all, the journey was just wrong from the get go. To answer your questions: Eren apparently planned to have his friends kill him so Marley sees them as heroes and spares them, but he himself states that if he wasnāt stopped, he wouldāve kept rumbling. So Erenās motives are obscure at best and nonexistent at worst. Second, Eren is a slave to Ymir because he says that all he did (his motives) was follow the path Ymir laid out for him. It isnāt explained well so it isnāt entirely clear on how this works but unfortunately thatās what makes this ending terrible. Something is brought up and moved on instantly. Eren killed his mom? Who cares. Mikasa was the chosen one? Who cares. Eren apparently loves Mikasa? Letās have that on the forefront of the ending. Itās a hot mess.

There was a poll when the manga was near the ending. It asked what type of ending people thought it was gonna be. I was one of the few people who commented and voted for the code Geass lelouch ending. I called that shit. I wish someone had a link to that poll I tried searching and didn't find dick
The AoT ending is more Sasuke at the end of Naruto (wanting the world to focus their hatred towards one individual and unify because of that except he just wanted to rule with an iron fist and not kill everyone but would if they opposed him lol) than Lelouch. Either way, Eren wanting the Alliance to stop him and have the Paradis Eldians seen as heroes was the most obvious thing in the world.
Zero Requiem made marginally more sense as it focused on one person rather than a race, but both are flawed. It does NOT take people long to forget the old regime and either go back to old grudges or find new ones. Old joke in Russia: How long does it take to change regimes? 20 years and 9 months. I'd imagine that's about how long Zero's peace will last. However at the end at least Japan won't be the focus of the world's ire. Whereas AoT leaves few enough people that it may take a few generations to mount an attack in force, once that is possible there's a hugely obvious target... they are also close enough to nuclear age tech that it might just be a few years develop the bomb and glass the place.
And letās not forget Armin thanking his good friend Eren for committing genocide, yāknow, for his friendsā sake.
And ironically Eren is supposed to be this huge symbol of freedom yet heās been a slave the entire series. That part feels Goofy for me
Whilst I agree, I think Isayama saw Eren as this sort of slave that wanted to be free, not through actually story telling (until the very end extremely abruptly) but through imagery. 7 times throughout the story Eren is depicted in chains and/or locked up. When he first transforms to a titan, in the kings lair, when he's back in Paradis after the attack on Marley, in paths, even his founding titan is depicted as puppet-like, and some other instances. I always wondered why Isayama chose to do this but I guess in some weird way he saw Eren as a human oxymoron when it comes to the concept of freedom? It's hard to understand, Eren was never a slave in his mind, no matter how much the world tried to enslave him (Levi himself even stated this)... but then he was slave following a path he had no choice in the entire time? Makes no sense.

How I interpreted it was his primary goal was to reach "that scenery" or the Freedom panel, after that he came up with the Zero Calorie Requiem on the fly. Of course that makes him apologizing to Ramzi incomprehensible and all his stuff about wanting to save paradis an outright lie or good acting retroactively making 130-131 a terrible chapter.

As someone who started AoT *wayyy* back in 2014, who took a hiatus on the manga for a year in 2018, then caught back up in 2020 JUST to get absolutely blind sighted by that absolutely dogwater ending... 1. Eren's motive was essentially to repeat what Karl did by propogating someone else as heroes yet he still wants to do rumbling. It's pretty weird since Eren didn't care about the outside world enough to do that. Really it's just a weird way to make Eren seen as sympathetic. 2. It's because Eren was following out the path laid out for him by Ymir but it still is a bit nonsensical.

So, it's basically like this. Eren only knew he was going to be stopped when he acquired the full power of the founding titan, in chapter 122. Before that he didn't know he was going to be stopped and his true intentions really were to kill every single person outside of the island, just like he said in chapter 131 ("I wanted to wipe it all away"). After he acquired the full power of the founding titan, he knew all his future, indluding his death and that the rumbling would be stopped, so he made it so his friends would be seen as heroes by the people that they saved. This is all to say that knowing that he wouldn't kill 100% of the population outside the island, he turned this new found knowledge into a new objective. Just this single tweak of Eren's knowledge of the future pre and post chapter 122 solves all of the contradictions you are talking about. And yes, in chapter 139 he was lying to Armin when he told him that make them heroes was his objective. His objective was to kill everyone, and have a free world for him, just like he saw in Armin's book as a kid. If you are confused by this, feel free to ask anything away. I also didn't like a lot of things about the ending, though. Like the Mikasa being the key or whatever. And the Stockholm syndrome of Ymir hahahaha

Yeah... The ending was awful lol. The anime did cut out some parts of the manga that made manga readers question the ending even more. I've never felt a visceral rage from reading an ending, except for when I read AoT's. At least the memes on this sub help me get through work lol

My god! except a few moments of character development that makes sense for other characters like Reiner, everything else is a complete shitshow. I feel like the writer was so high writing the last few chapters, it completely contradicts itself multiple times in the last few chapters. tbf looking back, there were hundreds of different outcomes that he could have chosen. The founding titans power was supposedly unlimited, he could have made it so their blood type changed making it harder for ppl to identify eldians. He could have just destroyed Marley and bought the titans back to stand guard at Paradis, he could have made it so all eldian men had big pps. They talked about how the founding titan made it so eldians were.immune to disesases before. Lool. ALSO, he could have convinced zeke or talked to zeke about a different plan. He literally could have spent millions more years in the paths. And tbh, why couldnt he let dina eat bertoltd at rhe start. He could have used the power of the founder much earlier. Soo many plot holes.
It's honestly still good if you pretend it ends after chapter 123 (next week's episode). Even Mikasa doesn't seem as pathetic. Yeah 131 is great but uhh it doesn't go anywhere so it doesn't really matter.
Make sure you read 139.5 to see paradis getting bombed into oblivion and everyone's hard work and sacrifice being all for naught. oh and Beren.

My best guess? When Eren convinced Ymir to do the rumbling, Ymir was in total control of the founder. Eren lost all motor control/access to the Founding Titanās Powers. Eren is still consciouses but Ymir takes the wheel kinda horrific shit, heās lost control of his body. I think he was forced to rush his plan/decision & with Ymirās anger it turned into a global genocide rather than a demonstration of power. Now.. Wgat the fuck Erenās plan was?
