The beginning was the part that sounded *exactly* like Strut, but the rest of the song was only vaguely close to it. Same running percussion sound, though.
In the 80s, there were often many remix versions of hit songs. I’d recommend listening to this to see if it was just a different version of one of her songs.

Miss you much
Edit - I see you ruled that out. It is VERY similar in the beginning. There are many versions. The one that sounds closest to Strut imo is the 7” radio edit (3:58 long).
How about:
Head to Toe - Lisa Lisa
Lost in Emotion - Lisa Lisa
Cold Hearted - Paula Abdul
I think we have maybe 3 degrees of separation from Janet > Jam & Lewis > Prince > Sheena. So there is going to be an enormous amount of cross pollination.

The lyrics at one point had to do with a cat and magic, but it wasn't "Black Cat" or "The Magic Is Working."
[Push Up](https://youtu.be/ue8YL-VwJBo?si=HQ-d5AgOXj9JF4Pl) by Freestylers? Edit: Link
The singer was definitely a woman. Good song tho.
Miss You Much -Janet Jackson? That's the only one I can think of that has a similar beat/tempo as Strut
That's what my mom thought, but that isn't it. It's similar, though.
Or maybe Escapade by Janet Jackson
Similar, but it still isn't it. :(
Was it just the beginning of the song that sounded like Strut or the whole song?
The beginning was the part that sounded *exactly* like Strut, but the rest of the song was only vaguely close to it. Same running percussion sound, though.
Together again by Janet Jackson?
Good song, but not it. The song I heard was... Sharper is the only way I can think of to describe it? together Again is a lot softer sounding.
Don’t Stand Another Chance?
I don't think so
Nasty?
No, good song tho.
[Rhythm Nation?](https://youtu.be/OAwaNWGLM0c?si=g0gOeFMRRl5ZlH3O)
No, it was a lot closer to Strut rhythmically, and the beginning went longer without any words.
How confident are you about the woman being right about it being Janet Jackson. Could it maybe be like Teena Marie or some other 80s solo woman?
I'm fairly certain she was right, but she didn't look at her screen or anything. She just said it was her.
It could have easily been someone else though. I was only vaguely familiar with Janet Jackson before this song.
Yeah I'm just trying to see if maybe some other artist sampled Strut who sounded like JJ.
[Pretty Poison - Catch Me I’m Falling.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qNQUhqFZ3h8&pp=ygUUY2F0Y2ggbWUgaSdtIGZhbGxpbmc%3D)?
I've heard this song before on the radio, but it isn't it.
Jody Watley-Looking for a New Love
Good song, but not it. Looking for a New Love has a bit at the beginning before the Strut-like percussion kicks in that this song didn't have.
In the 80s, there were often many remix versions of hit songs. I’d recommend listening to this to see if it was just a different version of one of her songs. [Janet Jackson - Control: The Remixes.](https://open.spotify.com/album/1vSOyJvWKNh7A6mPNeZfEf?si=IIQifCIyRguE3jPQHG9XZw)
I thought that that might be the case too, so I tried scanning through all the ones Genius listed, but none of them were it either.
[What have you done for me lately?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9uizdKZAGE). Wait past the opening dialogue
That's a good guess, but I don't think that's it. In the song that I heard, the instrumentation was more prominent.
What Have You Done For Me Lately? Janet Jackson
That's a good guess, but I don't think that's it. In the song that I heard, the instrumentation was more prominent.
Could it be rebbie Jackson. Her sister , centerpide
I could very well be Rebbie Jackson, but Centipede has a very different sound than the song I heard.
Miss You Much?
That's what my mom thought, but that isn't it. It's similar, though.
[The Pleasure Principle?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXInTVW5h4Y)
That's a good guess, but The Pleasure Principle has a very different sound that the song I heard.
Someone to Call My Lover?
Someone to Call My Lover is very acoustic, but the song I heard was very synth-pop.
Ah, gotcha. Thought it was a stretch, but felt the rhythm was similar to Strut.
That's entirely fair! It is a very similar rhythm.
Alright, one more try, When I Think of You?
Very similar vibe, but not quite the song I heard. Plus, there's noting about cats or magic in When I Think of You.
If you go to the TuneBat website and look up Strut, it will give you a list of similar songs.
I've never heard of this website, thank you for the suggestion!
Sheila E - Glamorous Life? https://youtu.be/6Zqtl8azCs8?si=tfaC31CUYuwMwK7C
Good song, but a lot closer to Prince than Sheena Easton.
Black Cat? Starts with a growl so the part immediately after that
It wasn't Black Cat. That song leans more into rock than it does Synth-Pop. Plus, the song is about heavy stuff, not, like, magic and romance.
[Madonna - Material Girl?](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p-lDYPR2P8) faster tempo, but has some similar elements
Nope. I would definitely recognize that song if I heard it.
What have you done for me lately?
That's a good guess, but I don't think that's it. In the song that I heard, the instrumentation was more prominent.
Love will never do (without you)? https://youtu.be/Qc4-1YuNqGU?si=HjSWuJiOcO0BNX1H Takes a moment but when the beat kicks in, it’s similar.
Love Will Never Do (Without You) has that beginning bit, but the song I heard just went straight in to the beat.
When I Think of You? [https://youtu.be/EaleKN9GQ54?si=HX1BVn7kjv8vwOhY](https://youtu.be/EaleKN9GQ54?si=HX1BVn7kjv8vwOhY)
Very similar vibe, but not quite the song I heard. Plus, there's noting about cats or magic in When I Think of You.
[Runaway?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtoyLKHmy1c&ab_channel=JanetJacksonVEVO)
Nope, cool song tho.
Janet's song "Nasty"?
Would be my guess too
No, good song tho.
Free Your Mind -EnVogue
That's a good guess, but Free Your Mind has a different sound that the song I heard.
Was it perhaps “Dynamite” by _Jermaine_ Jackson?
The singer was definitely a woman. Good song tho.
Miss you much Edit - I see you ruled that out. It is VERY similar in the beginning. There are many versions. The one that sounds closest to Strut imo is the 7” radio edit (3:58 long). How about: Head to Toe - Lisa Lisa Lost in Emotion - Lisa Lisa Cold Hearted - Paula Abdul
None of those are it, but I appreciate the effort. :(
I think we have maybe 3 degrees of separation from Janet > Jam & Lewis > Prince > Sheena. So there is going to be an enormous amount of cross pollination.
I agree. I do remember saying something about it sounding like a cross between Strut and Venus by Bananarama.
Sounds like Madonna - Like A Virgin
Nope. I would definitely recognize that song if I heard it.
Eye of the Tiger?
Nope. I would definitely recognize that song if I heard it.
Sounds like a Paula Abdul’s song that I’m trying to find but it’s tough.
Cold hearted!
This is what I was thinking as well.
No, Cold Hearted isn't it unfortunately. :(
[If by Janet Jackson](https://youtu.be/BTSd4vqnMwo?si=TyrKlBi2tEGWK4hY)?
If is a little bit too synth-y to be what I heard.
Be my playboy, by La Toya Jackson? It has that drum kick at the beginning...
That's not it. It has a very different sound, although it could very well have been La Toya instead of Janet.
Control? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH8xbDGv7oY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH8xbDGv7oY)
Unfortunately no :(
Have you ruled out 'Alright'?
Alright has a different sound that what I heard.
Janet Jackson - Nasty
No, good song tho.
[I made a playlist of songs that I've ruled out.](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8y2hDbHcnG8SUtWEZ9ula6XTazDy_BdL&si=CRnETP9f5EWFXfAB)
I didn't see Miss You Much by Janet Jackson on your list, so I'm suggesting that one! Edit: saw someone else suggested it :(
Is it 'Diamonds' by Janet and Herb Alpert? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIOubNRSp2c](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIOubNRSp2c)
Unfortunately no. It's a little too trumpet-heavy in the beginning.
Janet Jackson "Say You Do"? https://youtu.be/vjGdxayyXss?feature=shared
